  • tftpd starts randomly

    - by Mutant
A few days ago my Little Snitch filter starts popping up tftpd. I'd never seen this before, so I immediately start freaking out thinking my Mac has been compromised. I can't find anything unusual on the system. The process usually dies before I can trace it (little snitch never allowed the connection just left the popup up). I finally caught it once, and found this: [10:32]: sudo lsof -nlP | fgrep tftp Password: tftpd 1924 18446744 cwd DIR 1,3 1326 2 / tftpd 1924 18446744 txt REG 1,3 29856 163979456 /usr/libexec/tftpd tftpd 1924 18446744 txt REG 1,3 600576 163686622 /usr/lib/dyld tftpd 1924 18446744 txt REG 1,3 303300608 189014898 /private/var/db/dyld/dyld_shared_cache_x86_64 tftpd 1924 18446744 0u IPv4 0x34a76100fcbb06e3 0t0 UDP *:55818 tftpd 1924 18446744 2u IPv4 0x34a76100f1113c53 0t0 UDP *:69 [10:32]: ps ax | fgrep 1924 1924 ?? S 0:00.00 /usr/libexec/tftpd -i /private/tftpboot 1949 s000 S+ 0:00.00 fgrep 1924 For the life of me I can't figure out what is starting this. Nothing in cron, launchdaemons, etc. Google searches haven't yielded much either. The connection IP is different each time. So my question is: Has anyone seen anything like this before?

  • tftpd-hpa service must be restarted before working after fresh boot

    - by Steve
I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 inside a VirtualBox VM. I've installed tftpd-hpa so I can boot an embedded Linux device via tftp. My problem is that after a fresh boot of the VM, tftpd doesn't seem to work until I restart the service, after which is works great until the system is rebooted. The transcript below should explain the situation. EDIT: After the fresh boot, I execute netstat -a | grep tftp and find nothing. After restarting the service, the same command returns udp 0 0 *:tftp *:* (whitespace removed). I think this might be the key to the problem, I'm just not sure how to resolve it. I don't think it's related to this specific issue, but I had another problem with tftpd that was asked and answered in this question. steve@steve-VirtualBox:~$ cat /etc/default/tftpd-hpa # /etc/default/tftpd-hpa TFTP_USERNAME="tftp" TFTP_DIRECTORY="/var/lib/tftpboot" TFTP_ADDRESS="0.0.0.0:69" TFTP_OPTIONS="--secure" steve@steve-VirtualBox:~$ ls -l /var/lib/tftpboot total 8204 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 34352 May 28 08:22 am335x-boneblack.dtb -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 33206 May 28 08:22 am335x-bone.dtb -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 41564 May 28 08:22 am335x-evm.dtb -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 38048 May 28 08:22 am335x-evmsk.dtb -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4117904 May 20 09:39 zImage -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4117616 May 28 08:22 zImage-am335x-evm.bin steve@steve-VirtualBox:~$ tftp localhost tftp> get zImage Transfer timed out. tftp> quit steve@steve-VirtualBox:~$ sudo service tftpd-hpa restart [sudo] password for steve: tftpd-hpa stop/waiting tftpd-hpa start/running, process 2106 steve@steve-VirtualBox:~$ tftp localhost tftp> get zImage Received 4143798 bytes in 1.4 seconds tftp> quit steve@steve-VirtualBox:~$

  • How to make working TFTP server on CentOS 6.2

    - by Dima
I'm trying to setup TFTP server on CentOS 6.2. The /etc/xinet.d/tftp configuration file is the following: service tftp { disable = no socket_type = dgram protocol = udp wait = yes user = root server = /usr/sbin/in.tftpd server_args = -s /tftpboot -vvv per_source = 11 cps = 100 2 flags = IPv4 } The selinux and firewall are disabled. The /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny files are empty. When I'm trying to get a file from the TFTP server, the file transfer always failed and I see the following errors into /var/log/messages Jul 11 03:16:53 localhost xinetd[4155]: xinetd Version 2.3.14 started with libwrap loadavg labeled-networking options compiled in. Jul 11 03:16:53 localhost xinetd[4155]: Started working: 1 available service Jul 11 03:17:00 localhost xinetd[4155]: START: tftp pid=4157 from=192.168.10.3 Jul 11 03:17:00 localhost in.tftpd[4158]: RRQ from 192.168.10.3 filename 1 Jul 11 03:17:00 localhost in.tftpd[4158]: sending NAK (0, Permission denied) to 192.168.10.3 Jul 11 03:17:01 localhost in.tftpd[4159]: RRQ from 192.168.10.3 filename 1 Jul 11 03:17:01 localhost in.tftpd[4159]: sending NAK (0, Permission denied) to 192.168.10.3 Jul 11 03:17:03 localhost in.tftpd[4160]: RRQ from 192.168.10.3 filename 1 The tftpboot directory permissions are (output of the ls -l command): drw-rw-rw-. 3 root root 4096 Jul 11 03:32 tftpboot I also see that the tftpboot directory is shown (by ls -l) with green background (unlike other files/directories) (Why? As I know the green background is for sticky bit only). What I did wrong? How can I make TFTP server working?

  • How do I get a Mac to request a new IP address from another DHCP server running in parallel while Ne

    - by huyqt
Hello, I have an interesting situation. I'm trying to us a Linux based machine to allow Mac's to Netboot (similiar to PXE boot) by running a DHCP service in parallel with the "global" DHCP server. The local DHCP server hands out IPs in a private subnet, e.g., 10.168.0.10-10.168.254-254, while the "global" DHCP server hands out IPs from the IP range 10.0.0.1 - 10.0.1.254. The local DHCP range is only supposed to be used in Preboot Execution Environment and Netboot. The local DHCP server is something I have control over, but I do not have access to the global DHCP server. I have a filter to only allow members with the vendor strings "AAPLBSDPC/i386" and "PXEClient". PXE works fine, but Netboot has a quirk. The Apple systems that haven't been connected to the network yet can Netboot fine. But once it grabs a "real" IP address from the global DHCP server, it will "save" it and request it the next time we want it to netboot (which the local dhcp server won't give it). This is what I want: Mar 30 10:52:28 dev01 dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 34:15:xx:xx:xx:xx via eth1 Mar 30 10:52:29 dev01 dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 10.168.222.46 to 34:15:xx:xx:xx:xx via eth1 Mar 30 10:52:31 dev01 dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 10.168.222.46 (10.168.0.1) from 34:15:xx:xx:xx:xx via eth1 Mar 30 10:52:31 dev01 dhcpd: DHCPACK on 10.168.222.46 to 34:15:xx:xx:xx:xx via eth1 Mar 30 10:52:32 dev01 in.tftpd[5890]: tftp: client does not accept options Mar 30 10:52:53 dev01 in.tftpd[5891]: tftp: client does not accept options Mar 30 10:52:53 dev01 in.tftpd[5893]: tftp: client does not accept options Mar 30 10:52:54 dev01 in.tftpd[5895]: tftp: client does not accept options This is what I get when it already has a "stored" IP: Mar 30 10:51:29 dev01 dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:25:xx:xx:xx:xx via eth1 Mar 30 10:51:30 dev01 dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 10.168.222.45 to 00:25:xx:xx:xx:xx via eth1 Mar 30 10:51:31 dev01 dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 10.0.0.61 (10.0.0.1) from 00:25:xx:xx:xx:xx via eth1: ignored (not authoritative). Do you have any suggestions? It would be much appreciated.

  • TFTP uploads failing

    - by dunxd
I am running TFTPD via xinetd on a Centos 5.4 server. I am able to access files via tftp fine, so I know the service is running ok. However, whenever I try and upload a file I get a 0 Permission denied message. I have already created the file in /tftpboot and set the permissions to 666. My tftpd config has verbose logging (-vvvv), but all I see in my /var/log/messages is: START: tftp pid=20383 from=192.168.77.4 I have seen some mention that SELinux can prevent TFTPD uploads, but I'd expect to see something in the logs. I have SELinux set in permissive mode. Any ideas?

  • Linux Mint 10 LXDE computer to act as LTSP Server without luck

    - by Rautamiekka
So I've tried to make our screen-broken HP laptop to also serve as LTSP Server in addition to various other tasks, without luck, which may be cuz I'm running LM10 LXDE while the instructions are for Ubuntu. • How do I create a file?

    - by Shira
Hi, I'm following instructions about Installing and setting TFTPD in Ubuntu. It asks to Create /etc/xinetd.d/tftp and put this entry: service tftp { protocol = udp port = 69 socket_type = dgram wait = yes user = nobody server = /usr/sbin/in.tftpd server_args = /tftpboot disable = no } What does it mean to create? Is there any command I need to type? And "put this entry" - it means to type in one line all the lines above? I don't know Linux & I need your help please.

  • pxe boot fails with message: no DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found

    - by spockaroo
I am trying to pxe-boot a machine (client), and in the process I am trying to setup a tftp server that this machine can boot off. On the server, which runs Ubuntu 10.10, I have setup dhcp, dns, nfs, and tftp-hpa servers. All the servers/deamons start fine. I tested the tftp server by using a tftp client and downloading a file that the server directory hosts. My /etc/xinet.d/tftp looks like this service tftp { disable = no socket_type = dgram wait = yes user = nobody server = /usr/sbin/in.tftpd server_args = -v -s /var/lib/tftpboot only_from = 10.1.0.0/24 interface = 10.1.0.1 } My /etc/default/tftpd-hpa looks like this RUN_DAEMON="yes" OPTIONS="-l -s /var/lib/tftpboot" TFTP_USERNAME="tftp" TFTP_DIRECTORY="/var/lib/tftpboot" TFTP_ADDRESS="0.0.0.0:69" TFTP_OPTIONS="--secure" My /var/lib/tftpboot/ directory looks like this initrd.img-2.6.35-25-generic-pae vmlinuz-2.6.35-25-generic-pae pxelinux.0 pxelinux.cfg -- default I did sudo chmod 644 /var/lib/tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/default chmod 755 /var/lib/tftpboot/initrd.img-2.6.35-25-generic-pae chmod 755 /var/lib/tftpboot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-25-generic-pae /var/lib/tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg has the following contents SERIAL 0 19200 0 LABEL linux KERNEL vmlinuz-2.6.35-25-generic-pae APPEND root=/dev/nfs initrd=initrd.img-2.6.35-25-generic-pae nfsroot=10.1.0.1:/nfsroot ip=dhcp console=ttyS0,19200n8 rw I copied /var/lib/tftpboot/pxelinux.0 from /usr/lib/syslinux/ after installing the package syslinux-common. Also just for completeness, /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf the following lines (relevant to this interface) subnet 10.1.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { range 10.1.0.100 10.1.0.240; option routers 10.1.0.1; option broadcast-address 10.1.0.255; option domain-name-servers 10.1.0.1; filename "pxelinux.0"; } When I boot the client machine, and watch the output over the serial port, I notice that the client requests an ip address from the server and gets it. Then I see TFTP being displayed - indicating that it is trying to connect to the TFTP server. This succeeds, and I see TFTP.|, which return immediately displaying the following message PXELINUX 4.01 debian-20100714 Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. • Ubuntu-installer fails preseed configuration file

    - by user76171
I try to install Ubuntu 12.04 over network unattended. I installed a DHCP server (Dnsmasq), a TFTP server (tftpd-hpa), I got the netboot.tar.gz archive with the pxelinux.0 file, the pxelinux.cfg directory, the linux kernel and the initrd.gz image and I put a preseed file into my web server. Dnsmasq, tftpd-hpa, pxelinux and Apache are all on the same machine. The PCs MB doesn’t support PXE, so I use iPXE and boot it from a CD. The PC gets an IP from the DHCP, then iPXE loads #pxelinux.cfg/default, which I edited like this: timeout 5 prompt 0 default install label install kernel ubuntu-installer/i386/linux append vga=normal locale=en_GB setup/layoutcode=sl_SI console-setup/layoutcode=sl_SI netcfg/choose_interface=auto initrd=ubuntu-installer/i386/initrd.gz netcfg/get_hostname=ubuntux preseed/url=#http://192.168.10.10/ins/preseed.cfg Then it loads the linux kernel and the initrd.gz image. Then I got a question: Detect keyboard layout? I desided to bother with this later. So I answer No, and then twice on Englishjust to get trough and then I get to the error: The installer failed to process the preconfiguration file from #http://192.168.10.10/ins/preseeed.cfg. The file may be corrupt. I created the file myself and copied the d-I commands into it. I also tried to get the preseed.cfg over a web browser and it works fine. So why is the installer failing?

  • EFI pxe network boot error

    - by Lee
Asking this on both [serverfault][1] and [superuser][2]. When attempting to network boot RHEL 5.4 on an old ia64 machine I get the following error : ![alt text][3] So I've basically followed the tutorial here : [http://www-uxsup.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/doc/suse/sles9/adminguide-sles9/ch04s03.html][4] DHCPD,TFTPD etc are already setup and working with standard x86 PXE clients. I've unpacked the boot.img file into /tftpboot/ia64/ and passed the path to the elilo.efi file via DHCP with the filename ""; option. Changing this filename generates a PXE file not found error (see below). So I assume that PXE has found the file... ![alt text][5] The only thing wrong I can find in the logs is : Jan 6 19:49:31 dhcphost in.tftpd[31379]: tftp: client does not accept options Any ideas? I'm sure I hit a problem like this a few years ago but I can't remember the fix :) Thanks in advance! Thanks in advance! • TFTP Timing Out on Ubuntu VM

    - by valsidalv
I'm running a Windows 7 PC with VMware installed which has my Ubuntu (10.04 Lucid Lynx). I recently installed a DHCP server and TFTP (Xinet tftpd) using these instructions. I've mapped a network drive so that my Windows has access to all the files in my VM through a 192.x.x.x IP address. I'm trying to throw some custom firmware onto a router. The router has its own built-in TFTP utility that will download the image. It successfully manages to do everything but it is slow because it writes it to flash memory. There is another method that is much quicker because it writes to RAM directly but it must use the TFTP server in Ubuntu. The issue I'm facing is that the Ubuntu TFTP transfer seems to be timing out. The transfer starts but never goes past ~60%. Here's my /etc/xinetd.d/tftp file (similar to a known working config): service tftp { protocol = udp port = 69 socket_type = dgram wait = yes user = nobody server = /usr/sbin/in.tftpd server_args = -s /home/user/tftp/ disable = no cps = 300 2 per_source = 60 } I've done some searching but can't find any parameters for this file to control timeout time or number of retries. The last two arguments (cps, per_source) and completely alien to me (can anyone explain). I have a few possible solutions but the easiest would be to get this TFTP server working. Can anyone help? Either with a timeout configuration or maybe even recommend a different TFTP server? Thanks!

  • ubuntu 12.04 server and tftp access violation issue on put command

    - by SMYERS
I installed tftp as per this document: http://icesquare.com/wordpress/solvedtftp-error-code-2-access-violation/ I followed this to the letter 3 times and every time I put a file I get: root@CiscoCFG:~# tftp localhost tftp put test Error code 2: Access violation tftp root@CiscoCFG:~# tftp localhost tftp put test Error code 2: Access violation If I touch the file name chmod 777 the file then do a put it works perfectly fine. My config is as follows: service tftp { protocol = udp port = 69 socket_type = dgram wait = yes user = nobody server = /usr/sbin/in.tftpd server_args = -s /svr/tftp disable = no } the directory /svr/tftp permissions are 777: drwxrwxrwx 3 nobody nobody 4096 Nov 14 10:32 svr This thing should have full permissions as would anyone who wanted to write or read from that directory. I see nothing in the logs im really stumped on this. If the file is already in the directory I can read it all day long, I just cant make NEW files, can not put them, but I can do get's, I can only put to an existing file with permissions @777. Thanks

  • setup PXE (i.e. DHCP + TFTP) server on MacOSX

    - by Albert
What is the easiest way to setup an PXE server (i.e. a DHCP server + TFTP server) on MacOSX? Is there maybe some easy-to-use tool which just comes with both servers builtin? I have done that in the past but I remember that it took me several hours of editing some config files of tftpd (I think) and different versions of dhcpd, many trials and errors until I got it working (mostly). Now I have a fresh MacOSX installation and I want to avoid any complicated setup.

  • How do I PXE Boot Only when I want it to without user intervention?

    - by troz123
I would like to setup a PXE environment where I can re-image machines remotely without any user intervention. Only problem is when the re-imaging is completed it will do the re-imaging again and again and again. If I remove the MAC address file then I just get a error saying it can't find the MAC address file and the system stops. I also tried turning off the TFTP server and I get a error stating can't find TFTPD server. How can I make client machines only PXE boot once and after the re-imaging it will boot into Windows and everything is happy? And only PXE boot when I want it too... I'm using TFTPD32 to serve the files. I'm using a Windows 2003 DHCP server that points to pxelinux.0...

  • How to configure TFTPD32 to ignore non PXE DHCP requests?

    - by Ingmar Hupp
I want to give our Windows guy a way of easily PXE booting machines for deployment by plugging his laptop into one of our site networks. I've set up a TFTPD32 configuration which does just that, and our normal DHCP server ignores the PXE DHCP requests due to them having some magic flag, so this part works as desired. However I'm not sure how to configure TFTPD32 to only respond to PXE DHCP requests (the ones with the magic flag) and ignore all normal DHCP requests (so that the production machines don't get a non-routed address from the PXE server). How do I configured TFTPD32 to ignore these non-PXE DHCP requests? Or if it can't, is there another equally easy to use piece of software that he can run on his Windows laptop? Since the TFTPD part is working fine, a DHCP server with the ability to serve PXE only would do. Worst case I'll have to set up a virtual machine with all this, but I'd much prefer a small, simple solution. I'm not interested in solutions that involve using the existing DHCP servers or separating machines on the network for deployment, the whole point is to be simple and stand-alone.

  • Deployment Workbench no longer available after PXE boot

    - by Patrick
Our build process revolves around windows Deployment Workbench. Unfortunately this was setup by someone who is no longer with the company, and no-one has ever dared/needed to make any changes. The other day it stopped working. It turns out that one of our build guys started thinking about changing some stuff in it, clicked something and now it no longer works (He is saying now that he right clicked on the 'LAB' entry in 'Deployment points' and hit 'Update', which took some time to run through apparently). The job has fallen on me to resolve and frankly I'm not sure what I'm doing. I was wondering if someone with more experience than me can provide some pointers as to troubleshooting cos I'm feeling quite a lot in the dark here. On the server I have Deployment Workbench up and running (MMC snapin) version 3.0. There is a WDS service that appears to be running ok, as does the tFTPd service. Nothing specific to this in event logs. From the client side; PXE boot works and gets you to the Win PE launch, and it has the correct company logo as the background (proving to me that its loading win PE from the network). WPEINIT runs, and asks for domain credentials, here the team simply put User/Pass/Domain in the boxes and click ok. Normally the build would kick off. Instead they get an error message saying that the \NATBLU01\Distribution$ share isn't available. Checking \NATBLU01\Distribution$ shows that its there and accessible over the network. Security/permissions seem ok, even 'ANONYMOUS LOGON' has read access to that share so I don't see that being a problem. Digging the trace files from C:\MININT\SMSOSD\OSDLOGS\ after an attempt to run the build I can see an error saying much the same - <![LOG[Validating connection to \\NATBLU01\Distribution$]LOG]!><time="16:42:14.000+000" date="03-15-2012" component="LiteTouch" context="" type="1" thread="" file="LiteTouch"> <![LOG[FindFile: The file OSDConnectToUNC.exe could not be found in any standard locations.]LOG]!><time="16:42:14.000+000" date="03-15-2012" component="LiteTouch" context="" type="1" thread="" file="LiteTouch"> <![LOG[The network location cannot be reached. For information about network troubleshooting, see Windows Help.]LOG]!><time="16:42:24.000+000" date="03-15-2012" component="LiteTouch" context="" type="3" thread="" file="LiteTouch"> <![LOG[ERROR - Unable to map a network drive to \\NATBLU01\Distribution$.]LOG]!><time="16:42:24.000+000" date="03-15-2012" component="LiteTouch" context="" type="3" thread="" file="LiteTouch"> BDD.LOG shows much the same. Full copies of the .LOG files can both files be found here : BDD.LOG LITETOUCH.LOG I can get to a command prompt from the Win PE that boots from PXE, however there isn't any network stuff there. IPCONFIG returns nothing so none of the tests I would usually run resolve anything. I'm at a loss frankly. I did wonder if I could perhaps start a new build process but if the change to the DeploymentWorkbench has knocked it offline I don't think I'm going to be able to create a new deployment. Failing that; we do have a deployment point labeled type 'Media' which appears to be a DVD ISO image of one of the builds, but its dated 2008, is it possible to export the network build to .ISO and build from DVD? We are looking at new hardware to run this from anyway (for the impending Windows 7 roll out) so a temporary work round isn't going to be too much of a problem. All assistance is appreciated! EDIT : OK. Got it working again. Solution was close to Newmanth's idea. The problem was that our PE image didn't appear to be connecting the network. I had an older copy of the PE boot.WIM on a stick that I had been using for other purposes. I booted that and correctly got a network connection. Showed a correct internal IP and could ping out etc etc. However I was still getting the same errors in all the logs and in when wpeinit was running. What I did seperately was to update the PE image that DeploymentWorkbench was pushing out to display a different back ground. I wanted to prove that I was working in the correct place. Turns out that I wasn't. I went and looked at the other deployment stuff we had on this machine, Windows Deployment Services was installed and although all the install images are off line the boot image was online, so I uploaded the copy from my stick to that. Booted straight off. And fixed. Working. Yay! For anyone stumbling across this in the future you may find that although your deployment images are located in the DeploymentWorkbench, the Win PE boot image you are launching from is located in the associated Windows Deployment Services images.
