  • Is it possible to "intercept" a 3rd party library's "WriteFile" operation

    - by stout
    This is likely a long shot, but I thought I'd ask anyway. I'm using a document management system's API. They provide a "WriteFile" method to save a given document to disk. However, the library does not have a way to simply read a document into memory. My only option, it seems, is to write to disk, then read it back in again. I'm wondering if there is a better way to work around this obvious limitation. Thanks in advance!

  • Managed .NET Equivalent to CreateFile & WriteFile from WinBase (kernel32.dll)

    - by StevenH
    I am working with a legacy file format. The file is created using unmanaged C++ that utilizes the WinBase.h CreateFile() & WriteFile() functions (found in the kernel32.dll). I have been using P/Invoke interop to access these native functions like so: [DllImport("kernel32.dll")] public static extern bool WriteFile( IntPtr hFile, byte[] lpBuffer, uint nNumberOfBytesToWrite, out uint lpNumberOfBytesWritten, [In] ref NativeOverlapped lpOverlapped); [DllImport("kernel32.dll", SetLastError = true)] public static extern bool WriteFileEx( IntPtr hFile, byte[] lpBuffer, uint nNumberOfBytesToWrite, [In] ref NativeOverlapped lpOverlapped, WriteFileCompletionDelegate lpCompletionRoutine); [DllImport("kernel32.dll", SetLastError = true)] public static extern IntPtr CreateFile( string lpFileName, uint dwDesiredAccess, uint dwShareMode, IntPtr lpSecurityAttributes, uint dwCreationDisposition, uint dwFlagsAndAttributes, IntPtr hTemplateFile); [DllImport("kernel32.dll", SetLastError = true)] public static extern bool CloseHandle(IntPtr hObject); public delegate void WriteFileCompletionDelegate( UInt32 dwErrorCode, UInt32 dwNumberOfBytesTransfered, ref NativeOverlapped lpOverlapped); The issue with this is when I call WriteFile(), the file is always overwritten by the proceeding call. I need to find a compatible .NET equivalent that would allow me to produce the exact same format of output. Thanks.

  • Saving CSV in cocoa

    - by happyCoding25
    Hello, I need to make a cvs file in cocoa. To see how to set it up I created one in Numbers and opened it with text edit it looked like this: Results,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,, A,10,,,,,,,,,,, B,10,,,,,,,,,,, C,10,,,,,,,,,,, D,10,,,,,,,,,,, E,10,,,,,,,,,,, So to replicate this in cocoa I used: NSString *CVSData = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"Results\n,,,,,,,,,,,,\nA,%@,,,,,,,,,,,\nB,%@,,,,,,,,,,,\nC,%@,,,,,,,,,,,\nD,%@,,,,,,,,,,,\nE,%@,,,,,,,,,,,",[dataA stringValue], [dataB stringValue], [dataC stringValue], [dataD stringValue], [dataE stringValue]]; Then [CVSData writeToFile:[savePanel filename] atomically:YES]; But when I try to open the saved file with Numbers I get the error “Untitled.cvs” could not be handled because Numbers cannot open files in the “Numbers Document” format. Could this be something with the way cocoa is encoding the file? Thanks for any help

  • reading a random access file

    - by user1067332
    The file I create has text in it, but when i try to read it, the output is null. here is the file the creates the text file, it creates the file and puts it in the right postion import java.util.*; import java.io.*; public class CreateCustomerFile { public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException { int pos; RandomAccessFile it = new RandomAccessFile("CustomerFile.txt", "rw"); Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in); int id; String name; int zip; final int RECORDSIZE = 100; final int NUMRECORDS = 1000; final int STOP = 99; try { for(int x = 0; x < NUMRECORDS; ++x) { it.writeInt(0); it.writeUTF(""); it.writeInt(0); } } catch(IOException e) { System.out.println("Error: " + e.getMessage()); } finally { it.close(); } it = new RandomAccessFile("CustomerFile.txt","rw"); try { System.out.print("Enter ID number" + " or " + STOP + " to quit "); id = input.nextInt(); while(id != STOP) { input.nextLine(); System.out.print("Enter last name"); name = input.nextLine(); System.out.print("Enter zipcode "); zip = input.nextInt(); pos = id - 1; it.seek(pos * RECORDSIZE); it.writeInt(id); it.writeUTF(name); it.writeInt(zip); System.out.print("Enter ID number" + " or " + STOP + " to quit "); id = input.nextInt(); } } catch(IOException e) { System.out.println("Error: " + e.getMessage()); } finally { it.close(); } } } Here is the file to read, the pos is correct but ouput always goes to the error: null. import javax.swing.*; import java.io.*; public class CustomerItemOrder { public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException { int pos; RandomAccessFile it = new RandomAccessFile("CustomerFile.txt","rw"); String inputString; int id, zip; String name; final int RECORDSIZE = 100; final int STOP = 99; inputString = JOptionPane.showInputDialog(null, "Enter id or "+ STOP + " to quit"); id = Integer.parseInt(inputString); try { while(id != STOP) { pos = id -1 ; it.seek(pos * RECORDSIZE ); id = it.readInt(); name = it.readLine(); zip = it.readInt(); JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "ID:" + id + " last name is " + name + " and zipcode is " + zip); inputString = JOptionPane.showInputDialog(null, "Enter id or " + STOP + " to quit"); id = Integer.parseInt(inputString); } } catch(IOException e) { System.out.println("Error: " + e.getMessage()); } finally { it.close(); } } }

  • A Basic Thread

    - by Joe Mayo
    Most of the programs written are single-threaded, meaning that they run on the main execution thread. For various reasons such as performance, scalability, and/or responsiveness additional threads can be useful. .NET has extensive threading support, from the basic threads introduced in v1.0 to the Task Parallel Library (TPL) introduced in v4.0. To get started with threads, it's helpful to begin with the basics; starting a Thread. Why Do I Care? The scenario I'll use for needing to use a thread is writing to a file.  Sometimes, writing to a file takes a while and you don't want your user interface to lock up until the file write is done. In other words, you want the application to be responsive to the user. How Would I Go About It? The solution is to launch a new thread that performs the file write, allowing the main thread to return to the user right away.  Whenever the file writing thread completes, it will let the user know.  In the meantime, the user is free to interact with the program for other tasks. The following examples demonstrate how to do this. Show Me the Code? The code we'll use to work with threads is in the System.Threading namespace, so you'll need the following using directive at the top of the file: using System.Threading; When you run code on a thread, the code is specified via a method.  Here's the code that will execute on the thread: private static void WriteFile() { Thread.Sleep(1000); Console.WriteLine("File Written."); } The call to Thread.Sleep(1000) delays thread execution. The parameter is specified in milliseconds, and 1000 means that this will cause the program to sleep for approximately 1 second.  This method happens to be static, but that's just part of this example, which you'll see is launched from the static Main method.  A thread could be instance or static.  Notice that the method does not have parameters and does not have a return type. As you know, the way to refer to a method is via a delegate.  There is a delegate named ThreadStart in System.Threading that refers to a method without parameters or return type, shown below: ThreadStart fileWriterHandlerDelegate = new ThreadStart(WriteFile); I'll show you the whole program below, but the ThreadStart instance above goes in the Main method. The thread uses the ThreadStart instance, fileWriterHandlerDelegate, to specify the method to execute on the thread: Thread fileWriter = new Thread(fileWriterHandlerDelegate); As shown above, the argument type for the Thread constructor is the ThreadStart delegate type. The fileWriterHandlerDelegate argument is an instance of the ThreadStart delegate type. This creates an instance of a thread and what code will execute, but the new thread instance, fileWriter, isn't running yet. You have to explicitly start it, like this: fileWriter.Start(); Now, the code in the WriteFile method is executing on a separate thread. Meanwhile, the main thread that started the fileWriter thread continues on it's own.  You have two threads running at the same time. Okay, I'm Starting to Get Glassy Eyed. How Does it All Fit Together? The example below is the whole program, pulling all the previous bits together. It's followed by its output and an explanation. using System; using System.Threading; namespace BasicThread { class Program { static void Main() { ThreadStart fileWriterHandlerDelegate = new ThreadStart(WriteFile); Thread fileWriter = new Thread(fileWriterHandlerDelegate); Console.WriteLine("Starting FileWriter"); fileWriter.Start(); Console.WriteLine("Called FileWriter"); Console.ReadKey(); } private static void WriteFile() { Thread.Sleep(1000); Console.WriteLine("File Written"); } } } And here's the output: Starting FileWriter Called FileWriter File Written So, Why are the Printouts Backwards? The output above corresponds to Console.Writeline statements in the program, with the second and third seemingly reversed. In a single-threaded program, "File Written" would print before "Called FileWriter". However, this is a multi-threaded (2 or more threads) program.  In multi-threading, you can't make any assumptions about when a given thread will run.  In this case, I added the Sleep statement to the WriteFile method to greatly increase the chances that the message from the main thread will print first. Without the Thread.Sleep, you could run this on a system with multiple cores and/or multiple processors and potentially get different results each time. Interesting Tangent but What Should I Get Out of All This? Going back to the main point, launching the WriteFile method on a separate thread made the program more responsive.  The file writing logic ran for a while, but the main thread returned to the user, as demonstrated by the print out of "Called FileWriter".  When the file write finished, it let the user know via another print statement. This was a very efficient use of CPU resources that made for a more pleasant user experience. Joe

  • Writing to CSV issue in Spyder

    - by 0003
    I am doing the Kaggle Titanic beginner contest. I generally work in Spyder IDE, but I came across a weird issue. The expected output is supposed to be 418 rows. When I run the script from terminal the output I get is 418 rows (as expected). When I run it in Spyder IDE the output is 408 rows not 418. When I re-run it in the current python process, it outputs the expected 418 rows. I posted a redacted portion of the code that has all of the relevant bits. Any ideas? import csv import numpy as np csvFile = open("/train.csv","ra") csvFile = csv.reader(csvFile) header = csvFile.next() testFile = open("/test.csv","ra") testFile = csv.reader(testFile) testHeader = testFile.next() writeFile = open("/gendermodelDebug.csv", "wb") writeFile = csv.writer(writeFile) count = 0 for row in testFile: if row[3] == 'male': do something to row writeFile.writerow(row) count += 1 elif row[3] == 'female': do something to row writeFile.writerow(row) count += 1 else: raise ValueError("Did not find a male or female in %s" % row)

  • How to OCR a specific region of a MODI.Document?

    - by Mark Kadlec
    I need to OCR a specific region of a scanned document and I am using MODI (Microsoft's Document Imaging COM object). My code currently OCR's the entire page (quite accurately!), but I would like to target a specific region of the page where the text is always static (order number). How can I do this? Here is my code for the page: MODI.Document md = new MODI.Document(); md.Create("c:\\temp\\mpk.tiff"); md.OCR(MODI.MiLANGUAGES.miLANG_ENGLISH, true, true); MODI.Image image = (MODI.Image)md.Images[0]; FileStream createFile = new FileStream("c:\\temp\\mpk.txt", FileMode.CreateNew); StreamWriter writeFile = new StreamWriter(createFile); writeFile.Write(image.Layout.Text); writeFile.Close(); md.Close(); Can I somehow specify the region of the image? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • How can I fix "[Error 6] The handle is invalid." with PySerial

    I'm trying to connect to my phone from my Windows 7 PC using PySerial with the following code: import wmi import serial c = wmi.WMI() modem = c.query("SELECT * FROM Win32_POTSModem").pop() ser = serial.Serial(modem.AttachedTo, modem.MaxBaudRateToSerialPort) try: ser.write('at \r\n') print ser.readline() finally: ser.close() But get the following error on the write call: Traceback (most recent call last): File "D:\Alasdair\Documents\Python Scripts\Phone Interface\test.py", line 14, in <module> ser.write('at \r\n') File "C:\Python26\Lib\site-packages\serial\serialwin32.py", line 255, in write raise SerialException("WriteFile failed (%s)" % ctypes.WinError()) SerialException: WriteFile failed ([Error 6] The handle is invalid.) I've tried connecting with TeraTerm and that works fine, so it's not a problem with the connection to the phone itself. I've been searching around for ages trying to find a solution but haven't come up with anything that works. Any ideas?

  • Force download menu for remote files

    - by o-logn
    Hey, I would like users to upload links on my site. When another user clicks on the link (e.g. PDF file), then I would like the download popup to show instead of actually displaying the PDF in browser. I know I can use Response.AddHeader/Response.WriteFile to achieve this, but the WriteFile method required a virtual path. However, the links uploaded by the user will be pointing to external servers. Can I still force the download popup to show and, if so, what would be the most efficient way of doing it? Thanks for any advice

  • WinXP: Error 1167 -- Device (LPT1) not connected

    - by Thomas Matthews
    I am writing a program that opens LPT1 and writes a value to it. The WriteFile function is returning an error code of 1167, "The device is not connected". The Device Manager shows that LPT1 is present. I have a cable connected between a development board and the PC. The cable converts JTAG pin signals to signals on the parallel port. Power is applied and the cable is connected between the development board and the PC. The development board is powered on. I am using: Windows XP MS Visual Studio 2008, C language, console application, debug environment. Here is the relevant code fragments: HANDLE parallel_port_handle; void initializePort(void) { TCHAR * port_name = TEXT("LPT1:"); parallel_port_handle = CreateFile( port_name, GENERIC_READ | GENERIC_WRITE, 0, // must be opened with exclusive-access NULL, // default security attributes OPEN_EXISTING, // must use OPEN_EXISTING 0, // not overlapped I/O NULL // hTemplate must be NULL for comm devices ); if (parallel_port_handle == INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE) { // Handle the error. printf ("CreateFile failed with error %d.\n", GetLastError()); Pause(); exit(1); } return; } void writePort( unsigned char a_ucPins, unsigned char a_ucValue ) { DWORD dwResult; if ( a_ucValue ) { g_siIspPins = (unsigned char) (a_ucPins | g_siIspPins); } else { g_siIspPins = (unsigned char) (~a_ucPins & g_siIspPins); } /* This is a sample code for Windows/DOS without Windows Driver. */ // _outp( g_usOutPort, g_siIspPins ); //---------------------------------------------------------------------- // For Windows XP and later //---------------------------------------------------------------------- if(!WriteFile (parallel_port_handle, &g_siIspPins, 1, &dwResult, NULL)) { printf("Could not write to LPT1 (error %d)\n", GetLastError()); Pause(); return; } } If you believe this should be posted on Stack Overflow, please migrate it over (thanks).

  • can't write to physical drive in win 7??

    - by matt
    I wrote a disk utility that allowed you to erase whole physical drives. it uses the windows file api, calling : destFile = CreateFile("\\.\PhysicalDrive1", GENERIC_WRITE, FILE_SHARE_READ | FILE_SHARE_WRITE, NULL, OPEN_EXISTING,createflags, NULL); and then just calling WriteFile, and making sure you write in multiples of sectors, i.e. 512 bytes. this worked fine in the past, on XP, and even on the Win7 RC, all you have to do is make sure you are running it as an administrator. but now I have retail Win7 professional, it doesn't work anymore! the drives still open fine for writing, but calling WriteFile on the successfully opened Drive now fails! does anyone know why this might be? could it have something to do with opening it with shared flags? this is always what I have done before, and its worked. could it be that something is now sharing the drive? blocking the writes? is there some way to properly "unmount" A drive, or atleast the partitions on it so that I would have exclusive access to it? some other tools that used to work don't any more either, but some do, like the WD Diagnostic's erase functionality. and after it has erased the drive, my tool then works on it too! leading me to belive there is some "unmount" process I need to be doing to the drive first, to free up permission to write to it. Any ideas?

  • change custom mapping - sharp architecture/ fluent nhibernate

This is not picked up during the sql schema generation. I also tried: mapping.Map(x = x.text, "text").Length(100000); Any ideas? Thanks. Christian

  • Directly accessing the modem in Windows Mobile

    - by kigurai
    For some reasons I need to be able to access the internal modem of a Windows Mobile smartphone (a HTC s740 with WM version 6.1). What I want is to be able to access it like it was a serial port in order to give AT-commands. I have code that uses the TAPI Line interface and lineGetID() to get a "handle" on which I shuld be able to do ReadFile()/WriteFile(). Sadly I have not gotten it to work. What I do currently is: Initialize TAPI with lineInitializeEx() Open the Line with lineOpen() Iterate through each available device and get info. Currently I am selecting the "UNIMODEM"/"Hayes compatible on COM1" device. But maybe I should choose the "TAPI cellular service"/"Cellular Line" instead? I have tried the "Cellular Line" device with the same result. Use lineGetID() on the selected device to get a handle. Do WriteFile("AT\r") and then directly do a ReadFile(), which should give me a "OK" back if it really was the modem I accessed. Realize that it doesn't work and get annoyed... But this has so far been a no-go. Does anyone have any idea on how to do it? I am doing this in Native WIN32 C++ on Windows Mobile 6 SDK. UPDATE: I have so far managed to get a data connection between two phones using RIL, which gives me a serial port handle to write and read from. BUT, I still would like to be able to interact directly with the modem to send AT-commands. So, the bounty I am starting only concerns getting direct access to the modem in order to give AT-commands. My investigations so far indicates that this was possible in previous versions of Windows Mobile (by opening COM2 and/or COM9 and slaying RIL, or something like that) but I have not yet seen code which works on WM6.

  • Search a string in a file and write the matched lines to another file in Java

    - by Geeta
    For searching a string in a file and writing the lines with matched string to another file it takes 15 - 20 mins for a single zip file of 70MB(compressed state). Is there any ways to minimise it. my source code: getting Zip file entries zipFile = new ZipFile(source_file_name); entries = zipFile.entries(); while (entries.hasMoreElements()) { ZipEntry entry = (ZipEntry)entries.nextElement(); if (entry.isDirectory()) { continue; } searchString(Thread.currentThread(),entry.getName(), new BufferedInputStream (zipFile.getInputStream(entry)), Out_File, search_string, stats); } zipFile.close(); Searching String public void searchString(Thread CThread, String Source_File, BufferedInputStream in, File outfile, String search, String stats) throws IOException { int count = 0; int countw = 0; int countl = 0; String s; String[] str; BufferedReader br2 = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in)); System.out.println(CThread.currentThread()); while ((s = br2.readLine()) != null) { str = s.split(search); count = str.length - 1; countw += count; //word count if (s.contains(search)) { countl++; //line count WriteFile(CThread,s, outfile.toString(), search); } } br2.close(); in.close(); } -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- public void WriteFile(Thread CThread,String line, String out, String search) throws IOException { BufferedWriter bufferedWriter = null; System.out.println("writre thread"+CThread.currentThread()); bufferedWriter = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(out, true)); bufferedWriter.write(line); bufferedWriter.newLine(); bufferedWriter.flush(); } Please help me. Its really taking 40 mins for 10 files using threads and 15 - 20 mins for a single file of 70MB after being compressed. Any ways to minimise the time.

  • How to backup using backup API's in c++

    - by user1603185
    I am writing an application that used to backup some specified file, therefore using the backup API calls i.e CreateFile BackupRead and WriteFile API's. getting errors Access violation reading location. I have attached code below. #include <windows.h> int main() { HANDLE hInput, hOutput; //m_filename is a variable holding the file path to read from hInput = CreateFile(L"C:\\Key.txt", GENERIC_READ, 0, NULL, OPEN_EXISTING, FILE_FLAG_BACKUP_SEMANTICS, NULL); //strLocation contains the path of the file I want to create. hOutput= CreateFile(L"C:\\tmp\\", GENERIC_WRITE, NULL, NULL, CREATE_ALWAYS, NULL, NULL); DWORD dwBytesToRead = 1024 * 1024 * 10; BYTE *buffer; buffer = new BYTE[dwBytesToRead]; BOOL bReadSuccess = false,bWriteSuccess = false; DWORD dwBytesRead,dwBytesWritten; LPVOID lpContext; //Now comes the important bit: do { bReadSuccess = BackupRead(hInput, buffer, sizeof(BYTE) *dwBytesToRead, &dwBytesRead, false, true, &lpContext); bWriteSuccess= WriteFile(hOutput, buffer, sizeof(BYTE) *dwBytesRead, &dwBytesWritten, NULL); }while(dwBytesRead == dwBytesToRead); return 0; } Any one suggest me how to use these API's? Thanks.

  • Screen capture code produces black bitmap

    - by wadetandy
    I need to add the ability to take a screenshot of the entire screen, not just the current window. The following code produces a bmp file with the correct dimensions, but the image is completely black. What am I doing wrong? void CaptureScreen(LPCTSTR lpszFilePathName) { BITMAPFILEHEADER bmfHeader; BITMAPINFO *pbminfo; HBITMAP hBmp; FILE *oFile; HDC screen; HDC memDC; int sHeight; int sWidth; LPBYTE pBuff; BITMAP bmp; WORD cClrBits; RECT rcClient; screen = GetDC(0); memDC = CreateCompatibleDC(screen); sHeight = GetDeviceCaps(screen, VERTRES); sWidth = GetDeviceCaps(screen, HORZRES); //GetObject(screen, sizeof(BITMAP), &bmp); hBmp = CreateCompatibleBitmap ( screen, sWidth, sHeight ); // Retrieve the bitmap color format, width, and height. GetObject(hBmp, sizeof(BITMAP), (LPSTR)&bmp) ; // Convert the color format to a count of bits. cClrBits = (WORD)(bmp.bmPlanes * bmp.bmBitsPixel); if (cClrBits == 1) cClrBits = 1; else if (cClrBits bmiHeader.biSize = sizeof(BITMAPINFOHEADER); pbminfo-bmiHeader.biWidth = bmp.bmWidth; pbminfo-bmiHeader.biHeight = bmp.bmHeight; pbminfo-bmiHeader.biPlanes = bmp.bmPlanes; pbminfo-bmiHeader.biBitCount = bmp.bmBitsPixel; if (cClrBits bmiHeader.biClrUsed = (1bmiHeader.biCompression = BI_RGB; // Compute the number of bytes in the array of color // indices and store the result in biSizeImage. // The width must be DWORD aligned unless the bitmap is RLE // compressed. pbminfo-bmiHeader.biSizeImage = ((pbminfo-bmiHeader.biWidth * cClrBits +31) & ~31) /8 * pbminfo-bmiHeader.biHeight; // Set biClrImportant to 0, indicating that all of the // device colors are important. pbminfo-bmiHeader.biClrImportant = 0; CreateBMPFile(lpszFilePathName, pbminfo, hBmp, memDC); } void CreateBMPFile(LPTSTR pszFile, PBITMAPINFO pbi, HBITMAP hBMP, HDC hDC) { HANDLE hf; // file handle BITMAPFILEHEADER hdr; // bitmap file-header PBITMAPINFOHEADER pbih; // bitmap info-header LPBYTE lpBits; // memory pointer DWORD dwTotal; // total count of bytes DWORD cb; // incremental count of bytes BYTE *hp; // byte pointer DWORD dwTmp; int lines; pbih = (PBITMAPINFOHEADER) pbi; lpBits = (LPBYTE) GlobalAlloc(GMEM_FIXED, pbih-biSizeImage); // Retrieve the color table (RGBQUAD array) and the bits // (array of palette indices) from the DIB. lines = GetDIBits(hDC, hBMP, 0, (WORD) pbih-biHeight, lpBits, pbi, DIB_RGB_COLORS); // Create the .BMP file. hf = CreateFile(pszFile, GENERIC_READ | GENERIC_WRITE, (DWORD) 0, NULL, CREATE_ALWAYS, FILE_ATTRIBUTE_NORMAL, (HANDLE) NULL); hdr.bfType = 0x4d42; // 0x42 = "B" 0x4d = "M" // Compute the size of the entire file. hdr.bfSize = (DWORD) (sizeof(BITMAPFILEHEADER) + pbih-biSize + pbih-biClrUsed * sizeof(RGBQUAD) + pbih-biSizeImage); hdr.bfReserved1 = 0; hdr.bfReserved2 = 0; // Compute the offset to the array of color indices. hdr.bfOffBits = (DWORD) sizeof(BITMAPFILEHEADER) + pbih-biSize + pbih-biClrUsed * sizeof (RGBQUAD); // Copy the BITMAPFILEHEADER into the .BMP file. • C++: Implementing Named Pipes using the Win32 API

    - by Mike Pateras
    I'm trying to implement named pipes in C++, but either my reader isn't reading anything, or my writer isn't writing anything (or both). Here's my reader: int main() { HANDLE pipe = CreateFile(GetPipeName(), GENERIC_READ, 0, NULL, OPEN_EXISTING, FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED, NULL); char data[1024]; DWORD numRead = 1; while (numRead >= 0) { ReadFile(pipe, data, 1024, &numRead, NULL); if (numRead > 0) cout << data; } return 0; } LPCWSTR GetPipeName() { return L"\\\\.\\pipe\\LogPipe"; } And here's my writer: int main() { HANDLE pipe = CreateFile(GetPipeName(), GENERIC_WRITE, 0, NULL, OPEN_EXISTING, FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED, NULL); string message = "Hi"; WriteFile(pipe, message.c_str(), message.length() + 1, NULL, NULL); return 0; } LPCWSTR GetPipeName() { return L"\\\\.\\pipe\\LogPipe"; } Does that look right? numRead in the reader is always 0, for some reason, and it reads nothing but 1024 -54's (some weird I character). Solution: Reader (Server): while (true) { HANDLE pipe = CreateNamedPipe(GetPipeName(), PIPE_ACCESS_INBOUND | PIPE_ACCESS_OUTBOUND , PIPE_WAIT, 1, 1024, 1024, 120 * 1000, NULL); if (pipe == INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE) { cout << "Error: " << GetLastError(); } char data[1024]; DWORD numRead; ConnectNamedPipe(pipe, NULL); ReadFile(pipe, data, 1024, &numRead, NULL); if (numRead > 0) cout << data << endl; CloseHandle(pipe); } Writer (client): HANDLE pipe = CreateFile(GetPipeName(), GENERIC_READ | GENERIC_WRITE, 0, NULL, OPEN_EXISTING, 0, NULL); if (pipe == INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE) { cout << "Error: " << GetLastError(); } string message = "Hi"; cout << message.length(); DWORD numWritten; WriteFile(pipe, message.c_str(), message.length(), &numWritten, NULL); return 0; The server blocks until it gets a connected client, reads what the client writes, and then sets itself up for a new connection, ad infinitum. Thanks for the help, all!

  • How to encrypt and save a binary stream after serialization and read it back?

    - by Anindya Chatterjee
    I am having some problems in using CryptoStream when I want to encrypt a binary stream after binary serialization and save it to a file. I am getting the following exception System.ArgumentException : Stream was not readable. Can anybody please show me how to encrypt a binary stream and save it to a file and deserialize it back correctly? The code is as follows: class Program { public static void Main(string[] args) { var b = new B {Name = "BB"}; WriteFile<B>(@"C:\test.bin", b, true); var bb = ReadFile<B>(@"C:\test.bin", true); Console.WriteLine(b.Name == bb.Name); Console.ReadLine(); } public static T ReadFile<T>(string file, bool decrypt) { T bObj = default(T); var _binaryFormatter = new BinaryFormatter(); Stream buffer = null; using (var stream = new FileStream(file, FileMode.OpenOrCreate)) { if(decrypt) { const string strEncrypt = "*#4$%^.++q~!cfr0(_!#$@$!&#&#*&@(7cy9rn8r265&$@&*E^184t44tq2cr9o3r6329"; byte[] dv = {0x12, 0x34, 0x56, 0x78, 0x90, 0xAB, 0xCD, 0xEF}; CryptoStream cs; DESCryptoServiceProvider des = null; var byKey = Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(strEncrypt.Substring(0, 8)); using (des = new DESCryptoServiceProvider()) { cs = new CryptoStream(stream, des.CreateEncryptor(byKey, dv), CryptoStreamMode.Read); } buffer = cs; } else buffer = stream; try { bObj = (T) _binaryFormatter.Deserialize(buffer); } catch(SerializationException ex) { Console.WriteLine(ex.Message); } } return bObj; } public static void WriteFile<T>(string file, T bObj, bool encrypt) { var _binaryFormatter = new BinaryFormatter(); Stream buffer; using (var stream = new FileStream(file, FileMode.Create)) { try { if(encrypt) { const string strEncrypt = "*#4$%^.++q~!cfr0(_!#$@$!&#&#*&@(7cy9rn8r265&$@&*E^184t44tq2cr9o3r6329"; byte[] dv = {0x12, 0x34, 0x56, 0x78, 0x90, 0xAB, 0xCD, 0xEF}; CryptoStream cs; DESCryptoServiceProvider des = null; var byKey = Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(strEncrypt.Substring(0, 8)); using (des = new DESCryptoServiceProvider()) { cs = new CryptoStream(stream, des.CreateEncryptor(byKey, dv), CryptoStreamMode.Write); buffer = cs; } } else buffer = stream; _binaryFormatter.Serialize(buffer, bObj); buffer.Flush(); } catch(SerializationException ex) { Console.WriteLine(ex.Message); } } } } [Serializable] public class B { public string Name {get; set;} } It throws the serialization exception as follows The input stream is not a valid binary format.
