  • how to debug when xinetd says : got signal 17 (child exited)

    - by Faizan Shaik
    I am trying to start services vsftpd and sshd using xinetd. my config files are as follows. /etc/xinetd.conf defaults { instances = 60 log_type = FILE /var/log/xinetdlog log_on_success = HOST PID log_on_failure = HOST cps = 25 30 only_from = localhost } includedir /etc/xinetd.d /etc/xinetd.d/ftp service ftp { disable = no server = /usr/sbin/vsftpd server_args = -l user = root socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no instances = 4 flags = REUSE nice = 10 log_on_success += DURATION HOST USERID only_from = 127.0.0.1 10.0.0.0/24 } /etc/xinetd.d/ssh service ssh { disable = no log_on_failure += USERID server = /usr/sbin/sshd user = root socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no instances = 20 flags = REUSE only_from = 127.0.0.1 10.0.0.0/24 } Even though i've included only_from attribute, vsftp server as well as ssh server are refusing connection from localhost. while vsftp and ssh servers are working fine individually when i check with "service vsftpd start" and "service ssh start". when i did debug using "xinetd -d" throug terminal i got the output as 13/10/20@00:06:08: DEBUG: 3592 {cnf_start_services} Started service: ftp 13/10/20@00:06:08: DEBUG: 3592 {cnf_start_services} Started service: ssh 13/10/20@00:06:08: DEBUG: 3592 {cnf_start_services} mask_max = 8, services_started = 2 13/10/20@00:06:08: NOTICE: 3592 {main} xinetd Version 2.3.14 started with libwrap loadavg options compiled in. 13/10/20@00:06:08: NOTICE: 3592 {main} Started working: 2 available services 13/10/20@00:06:08: DEBUG: 3592 {main_loop} active_services = 2 13/10/20@00:06:16: DEBUG: 3592 {main_loop} select returned 1 13/10/20@00:06:16: DEBUG: 3592 {server_start} Starting service ftp 13/10/20@00:06:16: DEBUG: 3592 {main_loop} active_services = 2 13/10/20@00:06:16: DEBUG: 3607 {exec_server} duping 9 13/10/20@00:06:16: DEBUG: 3592 {main_loop} active_services = 2 13/10/20@00:06:16: DEBUG: 3592 {main_loop} select returned 1 13/10/20@00:06:16: DEBUG: 3592 {check_pipe} Got signal 17 (Child exited) 13/10/20@00:06:16: DEBUG: 3592 {child_exit} waitpid returned = 3607 13/10/20@00:06:16: DEBUG: 3592 {server_end} ftp server 3607 exited 13/10/20@00:06:16: DEBUG: 3592 {svc_postmortem} Checking log size of ftp service 13/10/20@00:06:16: INFO: 3592 {conn_free} freeing connection 13/10/20@00:06:16: DEBUG: 3592 {child_exit} waitpid returned = -1 both services are getting started but neither of them is working. after banging for 3-4 hours i still don't have any clue about this error. • xinetd 'connection reset by peer'

I'm using percona-clustercheck (which comes with Percona's XtraDB Cluster packages) with xinetd and I'm getting an error when trying to curl the clustercheck service. /usr/bin/clustercheck: #!/bin/bash # # Script to make a proxy (ie HAProxy) capable of monitoring Percona XtraDB Cluster nodes properly # # Author: Olaf van Zandwijk <[email protected]> # Documentation and download: https://github.com/olafz/percona-clustercheck # # Based on the original script from Unai Rodriguez # MYSQL_USERNAME="clustercheckuser" MYSQL_PASSWORD="clustercheckpassword!" How can I get clustercheck to exit gracefully in a manner that curl doesn't see a connection failure?

  • Xinetd , vncserver memory requirement

    - by JP19
Hi, I am installing the following on a low memory system: vnc4server xinetd xterm openbox obconf I will only occasionally be logging into the vncs for some admin work. My question is: 1) Does xinetd take memory / cpu even when vncserver is not running? If so, can I "run" xinetd on demand (how)? And if no, any idea how much memory it will take when vncserver is not running? 2) Does vncserver take substantial memory when no clients are connected? 3) Do openbox/obconf take memory when vncserver is running but no client are connected? 4) Do openbox/obconf take memory when no vncserver is running? thanks JP

  • Weird vps server issue

    - by anon-user0
I have an unmanaged linux vps Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot). I have LNMP installed. Also php-fpm php-apc, varnish, memcache. I have (or rather had) several live sites on it. under normal load the server uses ~700 mb memory. But since last night its using only 20mb~ memory and a lot of the services seems to be down (according to htop) I only see nginx working and mysql starts up and goes does every few minutes on a loop. Here are some information on the server that might help you help me: root@server:~# uname -a Linux server 2.6.18-308.el5.028stab099.3 #1 SMP Wed Mar 7 15:56:00 MSK 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux - root@server:~# ifconfig -a lo Link encap:Local Loopback LOOPBACK MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) venet0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 inet addr:127.0.0.2 P-t-P:127.0.0.2 Bcast:0.0.0.0 Mask:255.255.255.255 UP BROADCAST POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:12515 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:9541 errors:0 dropped:1 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:7191214 (7.1 MB) TX bytes:536726 (536.7 KB) venet0:0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 inet addr:176.31.158.78 P-t-P:176.31.158.78 Bcast:0.0.0.0 Mask:255.255.255.255 UP BROADCAST POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MTU:1500 Metric:1 - root@server:~# netstat -l Active Internet connections (only servers) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State tcp 0 0 *:http-alt *:* LISTEN tcp 0 0 *:ssh *:* LISTEN tcp6 0 0 [::]:http-alt [::]:* LISTEN tcp6 0 0 [::]:ssh [::]:* LISTEN Active UNIX domain sockets (only servers) Proto RefCnt Flags Type State I-Node Path unix 2 [ ACC ] STREAM LISTENING 9307368 @/com/ubuntu/upstart - htop: http://i.stack.imgur.com/NHKYX.png EDIT: Stressed. mind was not working adding log: root@server:~# less /var/log/syslog Jun 27 05:27:42 server syslogd 1.5.0#6ubuntu1: restart. • Xvnc4 started from xinetd only displays empty gray X screen

    - by Scott Thomason
Hi. I'm attempting to setup an Ubuntu 10.10 box so that anyone can connect to port 5900 and be greeted by the gdm login manager. To do so, I added a vnc entry in /etc/services and I am starting Xvnc4 using this xinetd config file: service vnc { protocol = tcp socket_type = stream wait = no user = nobody server = /usr/bin/Xvnc server_args = -geometry 1000x700 -depth 24 -broadcast -inetd -once -securitytypes None } This kind of works...I can start multiple sessions all to port 5900, and I get an X screen. The problem is that I only get an empty, gray X screen with no applications started. I know when you run vncserver from the command line it will look to your ~/.vnc/ directory for your passwd and xstartup files, and I think what I want to do is put "gnome-session" into the xstart file. However, which xstartup file? The running user is "nobody" who obviously doesn't have a ~/.vnc/ directory. I tried a /root/.vnc/xstartup file and a ~scott/.vnc/xstartup file and it doesn't look like they were even read. I changed the xinetd vnc service so that it would "strace" Xvnc4. I looked thru all the "open" lines and didn't get a clue as to what file it was trying to read for xstart. Can anyone help? I just want a terminal server where the user is presented with a gdm login screen.

  • inetd / xinetd not working under cygwin

    - by Zimmy-DUB-Zongy-Zong-DUBBY
I am trying to use xinetd (or inetd) with netcat to act as a TCP proxy. This setup works on Linux without issue. Under Cygwin, either as a service or from the a Cygwin command line, the (x)inetd fails to open netcat, with the error "no such file or directory". I have tried specifying /usr/bin/nc, /usr/bin/nc.exe, /cygdrive/d/cygwin/usr/bin/nc.exe, d:\cygwin\bin\nc.exe, and a TON of other combinations of forward flashes, backslashes, Windows paths and Cygwin paths. No matter what, I get errno 2, no such file or dir. Any ideas? I need this working ASAP. Edit: I thought it may have to do with it being in d:\cygwin (lame hardcoding?) but I tested it on a machine with cygwin on C:\, problem exists there too.

  • How to run inetd daemon on Cygwin?

    - by WilliamKF
I want to get inetd daemon working on a machine running Cygwin. I know how to do this on Centos 4, but on Cygwin it does not seem to work. Commands I tried are: cygrunsrv -I xinetd -d "Cygwin Xinetd" -p /usr/sbin/xinetd -e CYGWIN=ntsec cygrunsrv -S xinetd /etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd start On Linux, I would just do: /sbin/service xinetd restart After editing my configuration file: /etc/xinetd.d/<myAppHere> I've created this file on Cygwin, but can't seem to figure out how to start the service.

  • vPopmail / xinetd.

    - by Lorren Biffin
I'm attempting to setup vpopmail on my CentOS server (Media Temple). Everything is working like a charm, with the exception that I cannot login to the server from any pop3 client. Upon trying to login I get the following error: Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server mail.(mydomain).com responded: Login failed. I'm running qmail (of course) with xinetd (not tcpserver). I've placed a file called pop3 into the folder /etc/xinetd.d with the content: service pop3 { disable = no socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no user = root server = /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup server_args = mail.(mydomain).com /home/vpopmail/bin/vchkpw /var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d Maildir log_type = FILE /var/log/xinetd.log log_on_success = HOST log_on_failure = HOST RECORD } Can anybody offer any guidance here? I've been unsuccessfully trying to make this happen for over a week.

  • How to start vnc server on-demand (not on boot)

    - by QRohlf
I have a vps which has the basic xfce environment & tightvncserver installed. I would like to have tightvncserver automatically start whenever I initiate a connection to the port it runs on (in my case, 5901). I've seen posts about using inetd or xinetd to do this, but I've also seen lots of posts saying that (x)inetd is not included in Ubuntu for a reason, and that it's a bad idea to use it. Anyways, I'm looking for a way to auto-start tightvncserver whenever there's an incoming connection to port 5901, preferably with as few dependencies as possible

  • Auto Start of Proftpd on OpenSuse Linux

    - by a_ak
I´m trying to activate the Ftpservice on my Root Server, i have OpenSuse installed, and I´m using the xinetd method .. i added this to my xineted.conf: service ftp { flags = REUSE socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no user = root server = /usr/sbin/in.proftpd disable = no } I´m not sure about this "server = /usr/sbin/in.proftpd" .. i added the code directly in the xinetd.config and not in a seperate file.. and to my proftpd.conf as the documentation of profdtp ( was already setted) : ServerType inetd Then I restarted the xineted service .. and no errors to see, but the proftpd ist still not statrting/launching .. I searched alot on google, but everywhere they say to do what i did abouve, nothing more.. did i miss something ?

  • Forward public port to localhost

    - by Dan
I have a process running on my Ubuntu 12.04 server that insists on binding to a public IP address. I only want it accessible from localhost, and NOT the outside world. I've been trying to work out a way to forward 1.2.3.4:8888 to 127.0.0.1:8888. I saw something about iptables not wanting to forward connections to loopback, and I haven't been able to make it work with xinetd either. It's also important that the connection not only be available on localhost, but be inaccessible on the interface it's trying to run on. Is this even possible?

  • xinet vs iptables for port forwarding performance

    - by jamie.mccrindle
I have a requirement to run a Java based web server on port 80. The options are: Web proxy (apache, nginx etc.) xinet iptables setuid The baseline would be running the app using setuid but I'd prefer not to for security reasons. Apache is too slow and nginx doesn't support keep-alives so new connections are made for every proxied request. xinet is easy to set up but creates a new process for every request which I've seen cause problems in a high performance environment. The last option is port forwarding with iptables but I have no experience of how fast it is. Of course, the ideal solution would be to do this on a dedicated hardware firewall / load balancer but that's not an option at present.

I am attempting to setup HAproxy in conjunction with Percona XtraDB Cluster on a series of 3 EC2 instances. I have found a few tutorials online dealing with this specific issue, but I am a bit stuck. Both the Percona servers and the HAproxy servers are running ubuntu 12.04. The HAProxy version is 1.4.18, When I start HAProxy I get the following error: Server pxc-back/db01 is DOWN, reason: Socket error, check duration: 2ms. I am not really sure what the issue could be. I have verified the following: EC2 security groups ports are open Poured over my config files looking for issues. I currently do not see any. Ensured that xinetd was installed Ensured that I am using the correct ip address of the mysql server. Any help with this is greatly appreciated. • CentOS tftp server is broken

    - by Mike Pennington
I'm trying to run tftpd from xinetd on CentOS 6; however, I can only tftp from localhost. I have a file in /opt/tftpboot/fw.test.conf that I can retrieve if I tftp to localhost: [mpenning@localhost ~]$ tftp localhost tftp> get fw.test.conf tftp> quit [mpenning@localhost ~]$ ls fw.test.conf [mpenning@localhost ~]$ However, I cannot receive this file if I tftp to eth1 on this server (the address on eth1 is 172.16.1.4). [mpenning@localhost ~]$ sudo tshark -i eth1 udp and host 172.16.1.5 Running as user "root" and group "root". This could be dangerous. I currently set up a script to restart my http servers + php5 fpm but can't get it to work. • How might I stop BACKSCATTER using Qmail?

    - by alecb
New to ServerFault , please pardon if my details are too much Linux box acting as Virtual Host for domain hosting. Runs CentOs. Runs Parallels Plesk 9.x Regardless of the following, the SPAM keeps flowing in at 1-3 / second. An explanation of the problem... "xinetd service listens for SMTP connections and forwards to qmail-smtpd. The qmail service only process the queue, but does not control messages coming into the queue...that's why stopping it has no effect. If you stop xinetd AND qmail, then kill any open qmail-smtpd processes, all mail flow comes to a stop SOMETIMES Problem is, qmail-smtpd is not smart enough to check for valid mailboxes on the localhost before accepting the mail. So, it accepts bad mail with a forged replyto address which gets processed in the queue by qmail. Qmail cannot deliver locally and bounces to the forged replyto address." We believe the fix is to patch the qmail-smtpd process to give it the intelligence to check for the existence of local mailboxes BEFORE accepting the message. The problem is when we try to compile the chkuser patch we run into failures due to Plesk Control Panel." Is anyone aware of something we could do differently or better?" Other things that have NOT worked thus far: -Turning off any and all mail processes (to check as an indicator that an individual account has been compromised. This has been verified as NOT the case.) -Turning off mail AND http server processes (in the case of a compromised formmail) -Running EXIM in lieu of Qmail( easy/quick install but xinetd forces exim to close and restarts qmail on its own) -Turned on SPF protection via Plesk GUI. Does not help. -Turned on Greylisting via Plesk GUI. Does not help. -Disabled Bounce notifications via command line That which MIGHT work but have complications: -Use POSTFIX instead of QMAIL (No knowledge of POSTIFX and don't want to bother with it unless anyone knows it has potential to handle backscatter WELL before investing time) -As mentioned above, compiling a chkusr patch, we believe will STOP this problem, along with qmail (because of plesk in the mix, the comile fails every time and Parallels Plesk support is unresponsive unless I cough up MONEY) If I don't clear out the SPAM from the outgoing mail queue nightly, then it clogs up with millions of SPAMs and will bring down the OUTGOING email services. Any and all help welcome and appreciated!

  • GDM login screen is not displayed with VNC

    - by niboshi
Hi, I set up VNC server with xinetd. Also configured GDM so that XDMCP is enabled. VNC connection seems okay, but GDM login screen is not shown. Instead I can only see old bare X screen (gray meshed background and X-shaped mouse pointer), which I can't do any interaction with it. What can I do to fix the problem? No log is written below /var/log/. Server distribution: Ubuntu marverick /etc/xinetd.d/vnc is like below: service vnc1024 { disable = no socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no user = nobody server = /usr/bin/Xvnc server_args = -inetd -query localhost -geometry 1024x768 -depth 24 -once securitytypes=none port = 12345 } /etc/gdm/custom.conf: [daemon] [security] DisallowTCP=false [xdmcp] Enable=true [gui] [greeter] [chooser] [debug] [servers] /etc/services is also configured. Thanks
