  • Can't create add a SQL Server user: The login already has an account under a different user name.

    - by Zian Choy
Environment: SQL Server 2005 Express Windows 7 When I installed SQL Server, I followed the instructions at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa905868.aspx to set my computer's admin account as the SQL Server admin. However, when I try to access a database on my computer through Visual Studio 2008, I get the following error message: --------------------------- Microsoft Visual Studio --------------------------- The database 'Parkinsons' does not exist or you do not have permission to see it. Would you like to attempt to create it? --------------------------- Yes No --------------------------- Then, if I go to SQL Server and add a user to that database, I get the following error message: TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express ------------------------------ Create failed for User 'zian'. • Write stderror to a file using PowerShell

    - by Zian Choy
How do I capture error messages from a PowerShell-launched command in a text file? I searched the Internet for a while and found that supposedly, I should be able to do something like cmd /c "big blob of text >C:\output.txt 2>c:\errors.txt" to direct the output to output.txt and the errors to errors.txt but when I try to run the command, I get the following error: cmd.exe : The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. At C:\Users\Zian\Desktop\Untitled1.ps1:27 char:4 + cmd <<<< /c $command + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (The filename, d...x is incorrect.:String) [], RemoteException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : NativeCommandError Furthermore, if I try to run the command without everything starting at "2", then the command executes correctly and output.txt catches the right output. I looked at Redirect stderr to variable in powershell but it wasn't helpful because the answer to that question suggests capturing the entire output and filtering it in memory. In my case, I am backing up every database on a computer and since the databases won't fit in my laptop's RAM, I cannot use the question's solution. I also found tantalizing suggestions about using $err = @(command goes here) but with no information on what to do other than simply inserting that line of text. I tried to utilize the search function on Serverfault with the string "@()", but it did not return any results. What can I do to get the error messages into errors.txt?

  • The Jack LaLanne School of Sysadmins

    - by rickramsey
Two of my childhood heroes were Tarzan and Jack LaLanne. Tarzan was an obvious choice: what boy wouldn't want to spend his days bungee jumping through the jungle with his own pack of gorillas? Jack Lalanne had a disturbing habit of wearing stretch pants, but he was so damn fit for an old guy that you couldn't help but be impressed. Especially back then, when nobody knew what a dumb bell was, much less Cross-Fit. Here's what he did to celebrate his 70th birthday. Sooner or later we all face a choice in our careers: surrender to the life of a has-been like Bruce Sprinsteen's baseball player or become an unstoppable sysadmin like Jack Lalanne. If you'd rather keep on fighting like Jack, give these resources a look. Brian Bream's blog provides specific suggestions for keeping your skills up to date. The video interviews describe the types of technologies that are challenging what you used to know. Blog: The Old School Sysadmin - A Dying Breed? by Brian Bream "The sysadmin role has been far too dependent on performing repetitive tasks and working in a reactionary mode ... the sysadmin must grow a much larger skill set to be successful. Don’t grow vertically in one technology, grow horizontally amongst many technologies." Just one of the suggestions Brian Bream provides in this excellent blog post. Video: Freeing the Sysadmin From Repetitive Tasks Interview with Marshall Choy Marshall Choy, Director of Optimized Solutions at Oracle was once a sysadmin. And a Solaris engineer. He explains what optimized solutions are, how they are developed and tested, how they handle patching, and how these vertically integrated systems impact the job and duties of a sysadmin. Video: The Oracle Database Appliance Interview with Bob Thome Bob Thome, Senior Director of Product Management, explains what makes the Database Appliance simple, reliable, and affordable, and how it could change the economies and processes of the data center. Video: Why Pinellas County Chose Oracle Exalytics Interview with Gautham Gautham (pronounced like Batman's Gotham) recently led an effort to refresh the Pinellas County hardware systems. He'll explain what they were looking for, why they chose Oracle Exalytics, how they became convinced it was the right decision, and how it changed the way they managed their data center. Video: DTrace for System Administrators Interview with Brendan Gregg This video interview will give you an idea of some of the value-add tasks you can perform when you are freed from the reactive mode that Brian Bream describes in his blog. • chkdsk, SeaTools, and "does not have enough space to replace bad clusters"

    - by Zian Choy
When I tried to do a Windows Vista Complete PC Backup, I received an error message that blathered about bad sectors. Then, when I ran chkdsk /r on the destination drive, this is what I got: C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk /R E: The type of the file system is NTFS. Volume label is Desktop Backup. CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 5)... 822016 file records processed. File verification completed. 1 large file records processed. 0 bad file records processed. 0 EA records processed. 0 reparse records processed. An unspecified error occurred.f 822000 files processed) Yet, when I ran the SeaTools short & long generic tests on the Seagate disk, I didn't receive any errors. I know that I could reformat the disk and try running chkdsk /r again but I'd prefer to avoid waiting 4 hours in the hope that the problem was magically fixed. On the other hand, if I RmA the drive to Seagate, I have no SeaTools error number to use and they may claim that the drive is just fine. What should I try to do next? Side frustration: There is plenty of free hard drive space. The E: partition has 182 GB free.

  • Do I have to do anything for file ACLs to work both before and after I reformat a computer?

    - by Zian Choy
Let's say that I have a computer running Windows Vista with 2 users: Alice and Bob. Alice is the admin and Bob is a normal user. They each have files in their respective My Documents folders and Bob is not allowed to view Alice's files and Alice has to jump through a UAC elevation to view Bob's. If Alice copies all the files on the computer to an external NTFS-formatted hard drive with the following 2 commands: robocopy "E:\Bob's Files" "C:\Users\Bob\My Documents" /MIR robocopy "E:\Alice's Files" "C:\Users\Alice\My Documents" /MIR And then reformats the hard drive, installs a fresh copy of Windows, and creates 2 users named Alice and Bob on the computer, then will everything in the first paragraph be true after Alice copies the files back onto the internal hard drive? Assume that when the files are copied back over, she logs in as Bob and then copies Bob's files and likewise with her own files. Possibly relevant: Alice and Bob also have passwords on their user accounts and they create new passwords after the computer is reformatted. The main post has been tweaked slightly to make the question clearer. Answers that predate April 2011 are referring to an earlier version of this post.

  • Virtual Machines and Automatic Software Updates

    - by Zian Choy
It's obvious that one's main computer should always be have all the latest security patches and most people don't blink an eye when Microsoft Update installs non-security updates. In the land of virtual machines, I've run into 2 problems with automatic updates: The virtual machines are only run when needed. Only Windows virtual machines seem to patch themselves. To elaborate on #1, I generally make a virtual machine with a purpose in mind. For example, when I needed an old copy of Internet Explorer to reproduce a bug in RSS Bandit, I had a Virtual PC named RSS Bandit. The machine only stayed running for a few minutes at a time. Consequently, there is no downtime for the machine to download updates at 3 AM. To elaborate on #2, I've noticed that if I haven't run a Windows virtual machine in a while, then the moment I log in, the computer frantically downloads updates and within seconds, if I click the Start button, there is a little orange shield next to the "Shutdown" button. However, I ran a freshly created Ubuntu VM for several hours today with hundreds of updates pending and it seemed to never download any of them or install any of them. Is there any reason to be concerned about running VMs with dozens of security holes? If I should be concerned, then is there any way to get Ubuntu to download and install updates rather than just advertising a long list of updates to download next century? I've already tried telling Ubuntu to automatically download and install updates.

  • Monitor-Specific Color Profile Results In Yellow Grayscale Images

    - by Zian Choy
I recently purchased a new Acer S201hl monitor. Many lay reviews compliment its color accuracy with people noting only a bit of a blueish tinge. After a little time, Windows found, and I installed, the Acer drivers via Microsoft Update. During the installation process, the software installed an ICC profile for the monitor from Acer. I recently noticed that when I view photos using Windows Live Photo Gallery, the colors are wrong. For example, grayscale document scans appear with yellow backgrounds instead of white backgrounds. This happens with both my external monitors and my ThinkPad's built-in screen. When I removed the monitor-specific profile from the list of profiles associated with a monitor (for example, removing the Acer profile from the Acer monitor), the problem went away for that screen. I checked with Microsoft KB939395 and though it says "an incorrect color profile [...] is used for the monitor," the profile associated with my ThinkPad's screen seemed to be correct, based on its name.

  • Windows Color Calibrator Does Not Retain Color Settings

    - by Zian Choy
When I try to calibrate the monitor using Windows 7's color calibrator, the monitor rejects changes to the color settings. For example, one of my monitors has a blueish tinge. If I click my mouse to tone down the blue and then let go of my mouse the monitor will go back to being blueish. At the moment, I am getting around the problem by using the color controls in the monitor's on screen displays. How can I get the color calibrator to work? Update: I tried checking the color settings in the ATI Radeon Catalyst Control Center and noticed that I can't do anything. The "Reactivate ATI color controls" button keeps flashing and any changes I try to make are discarded instantly.

  • Killing Self-resurrecting Files

    - by Zian Choy
Local computer: Dell desktop Windows XP Named "5" Server: Windows Server 2008 Named "W" Whenever I delete a file, log out, and log in, the file reappears. The files all supposedly live on the server (e.g. "\W\Home$\zchoy\Desktop") but even when the files are deleted from the server and the local computer, they come back. I've already tried resetting the offline files cache. I tried deleting a file and then synchronizing with the server. The file didn't come back. However, as mentioned earlier, the file comes back once I log out and log in.

  • Referring to mailmerge fields in an if statement

    - by Zian Choy
Context: Windows 7 Microsoft Office Word 2007 I have a mailmerge field named "On_FB". Current code: { IF { On_FB } = "Y" "You're on Facebook." "You're not on Facebok."} The moment I get out of code-editing view, the code goes haywire. When I flip back to code-editing view, I see that the code has magically turned into: { IF " Y" = "Y" "You're on Facebook." "You're not on Facebok."} Needless to say, this is a complete bust because it will always say that the person is not on Facebook. I tried putting { On_FB } on its own and that works fine. What can I do to make the If statement work? (By the way, all the { and } were inserted via CTRL+F9.)

The files were not downloaded from the Internet; they are sitting right on my department's network drive. There's nothing to unblock if I look at the Properties window for the project file. Any tips for squashing this bug will be appreciated.

  • How does Outlook handle old recurring reminders?

    - by Zian Choy
Context: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit edition Microsoft Office 2007 Outlook Steps to Reproduce: Make an event that recurs once a week. Wait a week. See that it pops up OK. Wait a month. Notice that it doesn't say that it is a month overdue. Expected Result: The usual note that the reminder is [x] weeks overdue. Actual Result: Something like "6 days overdue". Possible Excaberating Issue: I have many overdue reminders. For the ones that aren't time critical (and all other things being equal), I work by category and age. For example, I do health-related reminders when I'm doing health stuff; if I have 2 health-related reminders, I do the older one first. Big Question: How is Outlook supposed to handle this sort of overdue recurring reminder? Is there any way to get Outlook to act the way I expect it to?

  • Printer offline until spooler service is restarted multiple times

    - by Zian Choy
When I try to print from my ThinkPad to a printer shared through a Windows 7 Homegroup hosted by a desktop computer, I often have to restart the Print Spooler service several times before the job will go through. In particular, this problem occurs when the desktop is in sleep mode when the print job is started and then brought out of sleep mode after the print job has been kicked off. Both computers are running Windows 7 32-bit edition with the latest patches. I have tried the following with no improvement: SNMP registry hack (see MS KB for details) Following the instructions in a blog post entitled "Sharing Printers on Vista 64-bit" Looking at Printer offline until spooler service is restarted

The computer knows that the time has passed because it will make my monitors display solid black screens. I already tried installing the latest mouse drivers from Microsoft and the problem persists. I also can't find any rhyme or reason to when the problem will happen. The problem happens even when Windows Media Player isn't running.

  • Receiving "May not have permission to edit" warning, even though I have permissions

    - by Choy
I'm using Panic Transmit as an FTP client connecting to an Ubuntu 12.x server. When I try to edit and upload a file using it, I receive the warning that tells me to check my permissions as I may not have permissions to edit a file. I'm not setting the permissions on upload and I do have permission to edit files. After clearing the warning and checking the file on the server, may changes go through. The files I'm trying to edit are set to 775 and are part of the www-data group which my user is part of as well. Any idea why I would be getting such a prompt? This only happens on some files, not all.

  • Use shared 404 page for virtual hosts in Nginx

    - by Choy
I'd like to have a shared 404 page to use across my virtual hosts. The following is my setup. Two sites, each with their own config file in /sites-available/ and /sites-enabled/ www.foo.com bar.foo.com The www directory is set up as: www/ foo.com/ foo.com/index.html bar.foo.com/ bar.foo.com/index.html shared/ shared/404.html Both config files in /sites-available are the same except for the root and server name: root /var/www/bar.foo.com; index index.html index.htm index.php; server_name bar.foo.com; location / { try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php; } error_page 404 /404.html; location = /404.html { root /var/www/shared; } I've tried the above code and also tried setting error_page 404 /var/www/shared/404.html (without the following location block). I've also double checked to make sure my permissions are set to 775 for all folders and files in www. When I try to access a non-existent page, Nginx serves the respective index.php of the virtual host I'm trying to access. Can anyone point out what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

  • Remove trailing slash using redirect directive in vhost

    - by Choy
I have an issue where urls that end in a "/" after a file name causes css/js to break. I.e., http://www.mysite.com/index.php/ <-- breaks http://www.mysite.com/ <-- OK, only breaks for file names To fix, I tried adding a Redirect 301 directive in the vhost file as such where I'm checking to see if there's an extension with a slash after it: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName mysite.com Redirect 301 ^(.*?\..+)/$ http://mysite.com/$1 </VirtualHost> The redirect appears to do nothing. Is this an issue with my implementation or is what I'm trying to accomplish not possible with a Redirect 301 in the vhost file?
