Since I seldom use the built-in cd-rom, but usually carelessly press open door button which is on the side of laptop. Is there any way to power off cd-rom so the button won't work. Better not to open the back lid and unplug power cable.

So, I have a Tyan Opteron board with a very old BIOS version. I realize Opteron's aren't exactly common like Athlons, Phenoms, Intel CPUs, etc. but my question revolves around updating the BIOS, however I don't have a floppy drive and there's no option to boot off of a USB key.

I'm trying to have a dual boot Debian / Mac OS X on my Macbook Pro.
I boot on the Debian install CD, the first steps are fine until "Detect and mount CD-ROM". It seems that the installer cannot find the cdrom device.
I ls-ed /dev and there is no "cdrom" in it.
Does anyone know about this problem ?

I have a Windows XP machine that I want to reinstall.
However, the CDROM isn't working now. (always reading and reading but never starts) and I have no floppy disk drive.
How do I reinstall Windows then?

I seem to be having some problem with suspend mode. Every time I try to suspend my laptop, it just locks the screen. Or maybe it successfully suspends just to resume only an instant after. What could cause such a behaviour?
