How to always turn off hi-line-mode, i.e., globally

Hi -

I use Cocoa Emacs 23.1.91 and I want to always have hl-line-mode turned off as I don't like using it. I can turn it off per buffer via M-x hl-line-mode, but that is tedious. Any help is appreciated!
