I have centos 5.3 and I just installated memcached 1.4.2. I can telnet it fine and do stats, etc., but when I try to connect to it over php I get an error that it can't connect.

I have been trying to resolve my issue of spiking cpu caused by php-fpm processes. I've reduced the php-fpm config settings to:
pm = ondemand
pm.max_children = 12
pm.start_servers = 2
pm.min_spare_servers = 2
pm.max_spare_servers = 10
pm.max_requests = 500
php_admin_value[memory_limit] = 128M

I have chat engine which is based on the Memcached variables, putting them into arrays and reading them in other end via jquery,
which works fine 95% of the times, however when the server load is high memcached (presume its the memcached) the crash and browser gets stucks up.
