I want to copy data from an old drive to a new drive. The laptop has a connection for only one drive. I see a number of splitters advertised for SATA drives, but have no idea what I need.

Let's assume you've got a box like one of these with space for 24 SATA disks.
What are the best bits of advice for deploying this?
For instance, should you be greedy and go for the 1.5 or 2tb disks or are they just not reliable enough to be used in an array like this and you should stick with 640gb…

My MacBook Pro runs slower the longer it's on. I am getting kernel warnings.
The resets correlate with AC power connects and disconnects. I don't know if the warnings do. (How do I tell?)
Are these bus CRC errors? Or something else?
Can this damage the drive or corrupt data? What is it seeing…
