How to connect to Sametime server from Empathy IM or Pidgin?

Does anyone know how to connect to a Sametime server from Empathy IM or Pidgin? If yes, could you describe the steps you took in order to connect?

I've tried creating an account in Empathy with the respective Sametime account and password information, but it continually fails to authenticate.
