Does iPhone mail fetch frequency affect battery life?

I know that the Settings menu says that less frequent fetches improve battery life, but is the increase significant, esp. on a device with lots of batty like the iPad? What is the difference between 1-hour fetch, 15 minute fetch, and manual in terms of battery life?
