Will I have any bad consequences if I root my phone (HTC Incredible on Verizon)?

Specifically wondering about updates from Verizon, HTC, etc?

I'd like to to this to gain full access to the hardware (LED flashlight, etc), because there isn't a good solution (that doesn't require a full reboot of phone afterward).
