Why does Mac OS X auto-mount the (disabled) home folder?

I've just bought a MacBook Pro. Now I'm trying to build up a filesystem (just some path) that looks like my Ubuntu server.

By doing so, I can reuse a lot of the scripts I've written before.

I found that Mac OS X auto mounts home with map auto_home, which prevents me from even making a symbolic link. I managed to solve this problem from the solution here.

It mentioned that Time Machine will auto-exclude the home folder. But I'm wondering why, this is confusing.
