No GUI after upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04.1

Yesterday I upgraded Ubuntu version from 12.04 to 14.04 from update manager. After upgrading it, my system got automatically restarted and now I am not able to switch to GUI mode.

Its showing me command prompt mode only. I have tried

ctrl + alt + f7 & sudo apt-get install Ubuntu-desktop

And all but its not responding.

I am newbie in Ubuntu so I don't have much idea that what's going wrong with it.

How can I switch to GUI mode now.
