• my.ini optimization on Windows 2008 R2 VPS

  I have a vmware VPS running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise that has performance issues with MySQL. Every few minutes, MySQL stall for few seconds then responed to queries. I'm sure that my.ini need to be optimized, but unfortunately, I don't have any idea of my.ini configuration. • HP ACU shows parity initialization failed (with screenshot)

  I put in a new drive due to a hard drive failure. When the rebuild got to 100%, the controller fails and I need to reboot the server to bring it online. I had to do this about three times and it eventually finished rebuilding. But I found that it says parity initialization status failed. I've left it for a few hours but it didn't seem to reinitialize. Then I ran the insight online diagnostic tools and it reported the disk that I put in reached read/write error threshold. So I'm beginning to think that the brand new disk I put in is faulty. Before I put in the disk, the parity initialization was at a finished state. Should I replace the new disk I put in? I'm very worried as I think the parity is broken. Or is there a way to kick start the initialization process?

• Blocking IP address with port forwarding

  I have a website setup behind a router, so the router has the external facing address and it will forward requests to the webserver inside the network. If there are X number of invalid login attempts, that IP address will be blocked from logging in. The problem is that because the site is being accessed through port forwarding, all requests show up as though they are coming from the router address, and thus the router address becomes the blocked IP. I'm not sure if this is a limitation of the router (linksys wrt160n) or if this a more general issue. Is there a way to handle this?

• LVM2 volume group lost

• Extracting a line section of mysql backup using sed

  I occasionally need to extract a single record from a mysqlbackup To do this, I first extract the single table I want from the backup... sed -n -e '/CREATE TABLE.*usertext/,/CREATE TABLE/p' 20120930_backup.sql > table.sql In table.sql, the records are batched using extended inserts (with maybe 100 records per insert before it creates a new line starting with INSERT INTO), so they look like... INSERT INTO usertext VALUES (1, field2 etc), (2, field2 etc), INSERT INTO usertext VALUES (101, field2 etc), (102, field2 etc), ... Im trying to extract record 239560 from this, using... sed -n -e '/(239560.*/,/)/p' table.sql > record.sql Ie.. start streaming when it finds 239560, and stop when it hits the closing bracket But this isnt working as I hoped, it just results in the full insert batch being output. Please can someone give me some pointers as to where Im going wrong? Would I be better off using awk for extracting segments of lines, and use sed for extracting lines within a file?

• Backup script to FTP with timed subfolders

  I want to make a backup script, that makes a .tar.gz of a folder I define, say fx /root/tekkit/world This .tar.gz file should then be uploaded to a FTP server, named by the time it was uploaded, for example: 07-10-2012-13-00.tar.gz How should such backup script be written? I already figured out the .tar.gz part - just need the naming and the uploading to FTP. I know that FTP is not the most secure way to do it, but as it is non-sensitive data, and FTP is the only option I have, it will do. • Ngingx max worker_connections and access log

  I'm troubleshoot an issue with my site. I'm seeing in the ngingx-error.log that the max worker_connection limit has been reached when the site went down. I'm not seeing an increase of requests during that time in the ngingx-access.log. Does that mean the mysql database had a bottleneck at that time that caused the requests to queue up? Or would it not log any requests that where made after the max worker_connection limit has been reached?

• Rsync over ssh: "ERROR: module is read only" suddenly appeared

  I've used from some time rsync/ssh to backup my shared host contents to my personal Synology NAS (212j for that matter), and it worked quite well. For information, I use a password-less ssh connection. 3 days ago, I updated my NAS software and since (or at least I believe it's since that), the backup won't work anymore. I get the following error on the host: rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes to socket [sender]: Broken pipe (32) ERROR: module is read only ..which I do not understand. beside that nothing changed that I know of in both source and destination that can be related to rsync or ssh, I did check a few things and all seems to be alright: I can still connect through ssh from the host to my NAS with the good user, so ssh stuff like keys haven't changed. I also have the correct file permissions on the NAS (I checked, and also tried to create files, directories, .. with the user used by rsync through ssh). I read here and there that the error means that I have to ensure that my rsyncd.conf have the right read only = no in it, but as far as I know, I never used rsyncd as well as I never configured anything for it and until now it worked like a charm.. I use the following command to do the backup: rsync -ab --recursive \ --files-from="$FILES_FROM" \ --backup-dir=backup_$SUFFIX \ --delete \ --filter='protect backup_*' \ $WDIRECTORY/ \ remote_backup:$REMOTE_BACKUP/ So I'm stuck and really can't figure out what happened. Edit: As suggested in comments, I also tried passing commands to ssh (but not from inside a ssh session), that worked as expected, and also tried a single rsync command, which didnt worked, failing just like the complete backup command. • Issues in Fedora detecting on board NIC card

  Basically I have two NIC cards (on-board + Added in PCI slot) on my Linux machine running Fedora 12.By default the OS detects the NIC card in the PCI slot but it fails to detect the on board network card.Following are few details of the same Linux Vivek 2.6.32.26-175.fc12.i686.PAE #1 SMP Wed Dec 1 21:45:50 UTC 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux ifconfig -a doesen't show the on board NIC card.Any thoughts for it please? • OpenAFS on Fedora/CentOS

  I am trying to see if OpenAFS fits my needs as a distributed filesystem and is a bit stuck. There are docs but they're all quite hard to understand, so asking for some expert advice here. My questions: which version to install? I need windows client support so I need 1.5 - right? But it is not stable.. Or is it? And don't see any pre-built rpms for it, so compiling from sources? tried to compile and it worked but it created a non-"mp" kernel module while my kernel needs an mp one - how to workaround that? do I really need a new fresh partition to start with or I can re-use an existing one and just make it available via afp? any nice HOWTOs around?

• Raid-3 like software backup tool

  I have a lot of data (about 7 TB), stored across multiple hard-drives with varying sizes. I would like to have a backup of that data to be safe against drive failure. A RAID is not a good option for me, as I want to keep my cost low and be able to easily extend the storage capacity of my setup by buying an additional HD. I remember seeing a piece of software that generates parity data over all drives and stores that on an extra drive. That solution protects the setup from hard drive failure and works with varying drive sizes (as long as the parity drive is the biggest one). But I can’t seem to find that software again. Does anybody now what I’m talking about or have any other solution for my situation?

• Corrupted NTFS Drive showing multiple unallocated partitions

  My external hdd with a single NTFS partition was accidentaly plugged out (kids!)... and is now corrupted. Iv tried running ntfsfix - with no luck - output below.. When I look at the disk under disk management in Windows 7 it shows up as having 5 partitions 2 of which are unallocated - none have drive letters and it is not possible to set any (that option and most others are greyed out) - so I can't run chkdsk /f Iv tried using Minitool partition wizard which was mentioned as a solution to another similar question here. It showed the whole drive as one partition, but as unallocated, and the option -- "Check File System" was greyout. Is there anything else I could try ? • Windows refuses to believe printer is online unless I delete and re-add it

  I have a Canon MP560. It is online, in the sense that (a) I can connect to its internal web server; and (b) if I delete the printer in windows (windows 7), and reinstall it, windows will recognise that the printer is online, and talk to it. In all other cases, the windows and mac computers (purchased last week, running whatever is the latest and greatest mac os) in my household will simply not recognise that the printer is online. The printer is statically configured to use the same IP address, so that's not an issue. Because the printer works just fine with windows after delete and re-add, I assume that the issue with the mac is that I haven't installed whatever drivers Macs need to talk to Canon printers over a network.

• Win7 not detecting external HDD but Ubuntu is detecting. Why?

  I have a 500GB Toshiba external HDD. Since yesterday Windows 7 stopped detecting it, however I do see it listed on the "Safely remove hardware and eject media" icon on the taskbar. Then I tried the same external HDD on my Ubuntu and it detected it just fine. Ubuntu and Windows 7 are on the same laptop. I have dual boot. Can someone tell me why is it happening? Am I missing a driver in Windows 7? Additional info: 1. This drive has worked perfectly fine in the past. 2. I did not format this drive ever. 3. It just stopped working yesterday in windows.

• Why is process not being displayed by TOP

  I am running a Mathematica script (this question probably doesn't fit in Mathematica.SE however) and I know that it generally takes up a lot of RAM and loads up my cores. • p7zip installs, but doesn't install? (7za: command not found)

However, when trying to use 7za, it's constantly telling me 'command not found'. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Some else I also have to do?

• Is there a keyboard shortcut to open a mounted TrueCrypt container?

  Problem I would like to open a mounted TrueCrypt container with a keyboard shortcut. Currently, I'm opening it by double-clicking the volume. See screenshot above. Instead of using the mouse, I'd like to use the keyboard. But there seems to be no way. Versions TrueCrypt 7.1.a Windows 7 64bit Failed attempts When you right-click on the volume, there is a "Open" command in the context menu. So, I've tried to open the context menu with the context menu key on the Windows keyboard. But strangely enough that does not open the context menu. I've also tried Shift+F10 to open the context menu, but that does not work either. There is no "Open" command in the menues (Volume, System, Favorites, Tools, Settings, Help), so I can't press for instance Alt+V to open a menu and go from there. I tried to use AutoHotKey to send a double-click command, but that does not work because the double-click is sent to the current mouse position and not the current selection, which would my selected TrueCrypt volume. There would be a HotKeys dialog in menu Settings Hot Keys... But there seems to be no way, to add or configure a hotkey for "Open". Workaround My current workaround is to tick "Open Explorer window for successfully mounted volume" in the menu Settings Preferences...

• How can I disable automatic send / receive for Outlook 2010 for Mac?

  There are lots of answers to disable automatic send / receive for Outlook for Windows, but not for Mac. Does anyone know how to do this for Outlook 2010 for Mac? The options offer no obvious capability, I've disabled all my 'Schedules' and defined it to 'Send All' and 'Send & Receive All' manually... but nothing stops emails from going in and out of my inbox at their will! You can see my screenshot... I've tried this both enabled and disabled. Thanks! Adam

• Hyperlinks on images in PDF from Word 2010

  I've got a Word 2010 document that I'm trying to convert to a PDF with "Save As...", preserving hyperlinks. Something odd is going on: Hyperlinks on inline text, or images that are inline, work fine. Hyperlinks on images with layout "in front of" text don't work in the PDF, same for hyperlinked drawing shapes. What I'm trying to do is make a "clickmap" image by putting an image on the page and overlaying parts of it with transparent shapes that hyperlink to different URLs. This isn't working, and the transparency has nothing to do with it - hyperlinks in the PDF seem only to work on "in line with text" elements. Am I missing something, or is there a better way to do this?

• How to take a copy of wubi ubuntu system as it is?

  I have installed ubuntu (as a dual boot) using wubi (Windows-based UBuntu Installer) installer for windows, and have been working in linux since then. Now that I have many projects with many dependencies, I'd want to install the same ubuntu to other machines, so that I don't need to install Ubuntu first, and then each and every project and it's dependencies. There is a folder called ubuntu in my windows drive, which was created by wubi and which contains all the ubuntu stuff. Other machines have only windows 7 installed and have the same configuration. Is there any way to install the save ubuntu I am using to the other machines ?

• Disable default Gnome Shell Super Key Mapping

  Gnome Shell by default uses the Super (Windows) key to display the activities overview. But I'd prefer to use the Super key to invoke Synapse. Right now I have to press Super+Super+Spacebar in order to invoke Synapse which is annoying (Super+Spacebar is the binding to invoke Synapse). Is there any way to remove the default Gnome Shell mapping? In the keyboard shortcuts system settings, only the Alt+F1 binding appears for the activities overview action.

• Is it possible to use different keyboards for different applications?

  What I would like is this: I would have two keyboards. One of them is "connected" to Matlab, the other is "connected" to my text editor of choice. This way, I could edit some script and still test some commands in Matlab without having to constantly switch between the applications. Basically, I would want to have an additional keyboard attached to my computer that solely controlled Matlab. That would be awesome! Is there any way to do this? Preferably with OSX, but it would be fun on Windows or Linux, too.

• Android Layout Preview for NetBeans IDE

  More often than not, the reason that Eclipse has more plugins than NetBeans IDE is because Eclipse has far less features out of the box. For example, thanks to its out of the box support, NetBeans IDE doesn't need a Maven plugin and it doesn't need a Java EE plugin, which are two of the most popular plugins for Eclipse. However, what would be great for NetBeans IDE to have is support for Android. It's existed for a while, thanks to the community-driven NBAndroid project, but without much desired GUI functionality. Today, the project announced a leap forward, that is, early results in providing a layout preview: Looking forward to more GUI functionality for this project!
