  • Is there a unified way to know if a node is visible or not?

    Hello guys, I'd like to be able to know if a node is visible and rendered on screen. As far as I know, there are at least 3 standard and easy ways of making HTML nodes not visible: Setting opacity: 0; Setting display: none; Setting visibility: hidden. I could check for just these three, but I'm afraid people can get creative when it comes to ways of hiding contents: Sending the element offscreen using negative margins; Using a width or height of 0 and hiding overflow; many more I trust people to have developed. So I was wondering if there is a standard way of determining if a node is rendered to the screen. I'm pretty sure all major browsers determine it for themselves to accelerate drawing, so maybe it's somehow exposed.

  • .net 3.5 to 4.0 Migration

    Currently we are doing a payroll application in Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (.Net 3.5) using some of the latest features like WCF, WF and the development for the same has almost completed. However, clients have shown their interest in migrating the developed payroll application in Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (.Net 3.5) to Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 (.Net 4.0). I don't have an idea about the expected challenges in the migration or if its just going to be very smooth. Any thoughts or comments?

    Is there still an injection risk when using prepared statements and mysqli_stmt_bind_param? For example: $malicious_input = 'bob"; drop table users'; mysqli_stmt_bind_param($stmt, 's', $malicious_input); Behind the scenes does mysqli_stmt_bind_param pass this query string to mysql: SET @username = "bob"; drop table users"; Or does it perform the SET command through the API, or use some type of protection to keep this from happening?

  • Having trouble with post-commit hook

    I am following this tutorial that is like the hello world for post-commit I am using unbuntu 10.04. I installed svnnotify and ran $ which svnnotify which output: /usr/bin/svnnotify so I changed the path in the turorial from /usr/local/bin/svnnotify to /usr/bin/svnnotify I also tried changing the line: #!/bin/sh to #!/bin/bash since bash is the login shell in ubuntu 10.04. I tried to run it the way the tutorial originally had it, with my changes, and combinations of the two. Everytime the commit is successful but I get Warning: post-commit hook failed (exit code 1) with no output. The original way had output not found I am very new to linux and shell scripting and have exhausted everything I can think of. What am I doing wrong?

  • Java API Method Run Times

    Is there a good resource to get run times for standard API functions? It's somewhat confusing when trying to optimize your program. I know Java isn't made to be particularly speedy but I can't seem to find much info on this at all. Example Problem: If I am looking for a certain token in a file is it faster to scan each line using string.contains(...) or to bring in say 100 or so lines putting them to a local string them performing contains on that chunk.

    In Cocoa, if I want to loop through an NSMutableArray and remove multiple objects that fit a certain criteria, what's the best way to do this without restarting the loop each time I remove an object? Thanks, Edit: Just to clarify - I was looking for the best way, e.g. something more elegant than manually updating the index I'm at.   • Why should I use a container div in HTML?

    I am currently learning html/css, and have noticed a common technique is to place a generic container div in the root of the body tag: <html> <head> ... </head> <body> <div id="container"> ... </div> </body> </html> Is there a valid reason for doing this? Why can't the css just reference the body tag?

  • Use LINQ to count the number of combinations existing in two lists

    I'm trying to create a LINQ query (or queries) that count the total number of occurences of a combinations of items in one list that exist in a different list. For example, take the following lists: CartItems DiscountItems ========= ============= AAA AAA AAA BBB AAA BBB BBB CCC CCC DDD The result of the query operation should be 2 since I can find two combinations of AAA and BBB (from DiscountItems) within the contents of CartItems. My thinking in approaching the query is to join the lists together to shorten CartItems to only include items from DiscountItems. The solution would be to find the CartItem in the resulting query that occurs the least amount of times, thus indicating how many combinations of items exist in CartItems. How can this be done? Here's the query I already have, but it's not working. query results in an enumeration with 100 items, far more than I expected.   • How to speed-up python nested loop?

    I'm performing a nested loop in python that is included below. This serves as a basic way of searching through existing financial time series and looking for periods in the time series that match certain characteristics. In this case there are two separate, equally sized, arrays representing the 'close' (i.e. the price of an asset) and the 'volume' (i.e. the amount of the asset that was exchanged over the period). For each period in time I would like to look forward at all future intervals with lengths between 1 and INTERVAL_LENGTH and see if any of those intervals have characteristics that match my search (in this case the ratio of the close values is greater than 1.0001 and less than 1.5 and the summed volume is greater than 100). My understanding is that one of the major reasons for the speedup when using NumPy is that the interpreter doesn't need to type-check the operands each time it evaluates something so long as you're operating on the array as a whole (e.g. numpy_array * 2), but obviously the code below is not taking advantage of that. Is there a way to replace the internal loop with some kind of window function which could result in a speedup, or any other way using numpy/scipy to speed this up substantially in native python? Alternatively, is there a better way to do this in general (e.g. will it be much faster to write this loop in C++ and use weave)?   • Subclassing an NSTextField

    Given all the complex things I seem to cover every day, this appears to be a "what the heck am I doing wrong that seems to simple?" scenario! I would like to subclass an NSTextField to change the background color and text color. For simplicity sake (and to help anyone who hasn't ever subclassed anything before), here is the example of my (simplified) subclass MyNSTextFieldSubclass... Step 1: Create the subclass file: First the header file @interface MyTextFieldSubclass : NSTextField { } @end And the method file @implementation MyTextFieldSubclass -(NSColor *)backgroundColor { return [NSColor redColor]; } -(NSColor *)textColor { return [NSColor yellowColor]; } @end Step 2: Drag an NSTextField to a window in Interface Builder, select the Identity tab in the inspector and select the class MyTextFieldSubclass Step 3: Save the IB file, build and run the application Problem When I run the build, the text field does not reflect the color subclassing. However, I know the subclass is being called because if I add the following method, it gets called on text changes. -(void)textDidChange:(NSNotification *)notification { NSLog(@"My text changed"); } So why does the color change not occur on the text fields? I know that I can set the color in IB, but for anyone who has dealt with a lot of UI elements that all need the same styling, subclassing makes life way, way easier. Ironically, I have never had to subclass an NSTextField before and this one has me stumped. As usual, any and all help very much appreciated. I'm sure it will turn out to be a "Doh!" moment - just cant see the wood for the trees right now (plus I'm exhausted from watching too much World Cup Football early in the morning which never helps).

  • ASP.NET MVC2: Can you get ModelMetadata.ContainerType from within a collection?

    I'm trying to call DisplayFor and DisplayForModel to iterate an IEnumerable< with various element types from within a view. I have Templates defined for each element/Model type. What I would like to do is check the ViewData.ModelMetadata.ContainerType from within the Template so that Template can determine if it was called as part of a collection. From what I've read on Brad Wilson post and others it has to do with the use of IEnumerable and its being an interface. Is there a way to insure that the ContainerType is set? Perhaps by creating a ModelMetadataProviders? I looked into that breifly but it appears the ContainerType value is determined before and then passed to the Provider. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • How do you debug Silverlight applications with Chrome AND hit breakpoints?

    I am using Visual Studio 2010 to create a Silverlight 4 application. I set a breakpoint in my code-behind, start the debug session from Visual Studio, and unfortunately, my breakpoint never gets hit. So, I eventually I tried setting my default browser to Internet Explorer ... and lo and behold ... my breakpoint gets suddenly hit. Is Chrome a supported browser for debugging Silverlight applications? If so, what am I missing in order to get this to work? Or, is Internet Explorer the only supported browser when it comes to debugging?

  • Is the Internet Making us Smarter or Not?

    I’ve been reading recently about an exchange among some very bright folks, some who posit that the Internet with its instant-on, sometimes-right, big-statement-wins mentality is making people think in a more shallow way, teaching us to rely on others as experts and diluting our logical thought process. Others state that it broadens our perspective and extends our mental reach. Whenever I see this kind of exchange on two ends of a spectrum, I begin to wonder if both sides might be correct.   I can certainly say that I have changed my way of learning, reading, and social interactions because of the Internet. And my tolerance for reading long missives has indeed gone down. I tend to (mentally and literally) “bookmark” things I never seem to have time to get back to. But I also agree that I’ve been exposed to thoughts, ideas and people I never would have encountered any other way. So how to deal with this dichotomy?   Well, I’m going to go off and think about it. No, I’m really going to go off for a full week to a cabin I’ve rented in a National Forest in the Midwest. It has no indoor plumbing, phones, Internet connections or anything else – only a bed to sleep in and a place to cook a little. I’m taking one book, some paper, and a guitar with me and that’s it. I plan to spend my days walking, reading a little, playing a little on the guitar, but mostly just thinking. Those of you who know me might find this unusual. I’m an always-on, hyper-caffeinated, overly-busy, connected person. I haven’t taken a vacation in five years, at least for more than two or three days at a time. Even then, I keep us on the move constantly – our vacations aren’t cruises or anything like that. I check e-mail, post and all that. When I’m not on vacation, I live with and leverage lots of technology, and work with those that do the same. This, however, is a really “unplugged” event, and I’m hoping that it will let me unpack the things I’ve been stuffing in my head. I plan to spend a lot of time on a single subject, writing notes, thinking, and writing more notes.   So after I post tomorrow's “quote of the day” I’ll be “going dark” for a week. No twitter, FaceBook, LinkedIn, e-mail, chat, none of my five blogs will get updated, and I’ll have to turn in my two articles for InformIT.com early. I won’t have access to my college class portal, so my students will be without me for a week. I will really be offline. I’ll see you in a week – hopefully a little more educated.   • Do assembly strong names change when new versions of .Net are released?

    I'm trying to load an assembly that was installed as part of .Net 3.5 SP1 using Assembly.Load() by referencing its strong name. This works fine on my computer right now, but is it future proof? Will the strong name of core .Net assemblies change when patches are installed or new versions of the .Net framework are released? If so, how can I load an assembly from the GAC without using it's strong name?

    I'm having a problem with a class like this: class Sprite { ... bool checkCollision(Sprite &spr); ... }; So, if I have that clase, I can do this: ball.checkCollision(bar1); But if I change the class to this: class Sprite { ... bool checkCollision(Sprite* spr); ... }; I have to do this: ball.checkCollision(&bar1); So, what's the difference?? It's better a way instead other? Thank you.
