• Virtualmin & git integration

  I've installed virtualmin on my VPS to manage my websites. It's working perfect and as expected nearly a year now. Recently I wanted to add some features to one of my sites, and I need git integration. I've correctly installed git & gitweb on my server, and I can create repositories and watch them under http://sub.domain.com/git/gitweb.cgi Here is the current relevant directory tree: /home/user/domains/sub.domain.com/public_html/git/ drwxr-sr-x user user . drwxr-x--- user user .. -rw-r--r-- user user git-favicon.png -rw-r--r-- user user git-logo.png -rwxr-xr-x user user gitweb.cgi -rw-r--r-- user user gitweb.css drwxrwx--- apache user reponame.git /home/user/domains/sub.domain.com/public_html/git/reponame.git/ drwxrwx--- apache user . drwxr-sr-x user user .. drwxrwx--- apache user branches -rwxrwx--- apache user config -rwxrwx--- user user description -rwxrwx--- apache user HEAD drwxrwx--- apache user hooks drwxrwx--- apache user info drwxrwx--- apache user objects drwxrwx--- apache user refs But I have some questions: When I'm visiting http://sub.domain.com/git/gitweb.cgi, the owner is listed as 'Apache'. why? how can I change that? Usually, to create a new git repository, I'll do something like: $ mkdir proj $ cd proj $ git init Initialized empty Git repository in /home/user/proj/.git/ // here I'm creating the files or copy them from somewhere else $ git add *.php $ git add README $ git commit -m 'initial version' But after creating the repository in virtualmin, I can find a new dir named 'reponame.git' but not the '.git' dir. When I'm trying to run any git command (e.g. git status) I'm receiving "fatal: This operation must be run in a work tree". How can I work with that repository? Currently I need to explicitly grant access for users to be able to view the repositories via gitweb. How can I make certain repositories public?

• flash h264 mp4 playback pixelation

  Working with converting/playing h264 mp4 videos in flash. I'm converting the video from various source file formats (mostly .mov & .mp4), to h264 mp4 using ffmpeg server side. All seems to be working just fine, except I'm getting a few reports of pixelation of the video when being viewed on windows machines. I've testing just about every browser I can think of on (XP/Vista/7) and could not reproduce. Here's a screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/IK5RV.jpg (sorry for the resolution, was in an email from the client, as I'm unable to reproduce.) Anyone else ever run into this issue? At this point it could be anything in my mind. It seems like an odd bug, and probably a codec issue, or somehow a 32/64-bit issue?

• Windows 7 automatically install usb driver

  I have tried to install usb driver for Samsung arndale on Windows 7. Now it has two entries in Device Manager. I can not uninstall the one with question mark. If I uninstall both of them, when I plug in the hardware, Windows 7 will automatically install both of the entries when the circuit pulg in. I don't get the chance to choose the right driver. When I try to update the wrong driver, it says found the driver but can not install it.

• Need help creating a batch file to replace "." with "-"

  Like the title says, I need help creating a batch file to replace "." with "-", however I need to perserve the file extensions and it needs to work through the subfolders. I found another post on here that got the effect I wanted but it also swapped the . in my file extensions. I am a completely ignorant regarding shell script so please be detailed in your response. I have no idea what any of the switches mean or even how to specify the path for that matter. Thanks!

• LVM snapshot size

  I currently have 2 volume's: [root@compute4 /]# lvscan ACTIVE '/dev/vps/vm108_img' [30.00 GB] inherit ACTIVE '/dev/vps/vm109_img' [90.00 GB] inherit Now, I use the LVM snapshot function to create backups. My quesion is, what size does the snapshot needs to be? Atleast the same as the volume in question or can it be a lot smaller and will only the changes be saved into it?

• How can I make a persistent ssh tunnel?

  I have a Mac laptop and would like to have a persistent ssh tunnel so I can always log in from outside the local network. I'm looking for something that will work when the server can't be reached initially (e.g. if I don't have an Internet connection when I boot it), and will automatically start the tunnel when possible. I've tried putting an @reboot autossh line in my crontab, but I've found that sessions started with autossh disconnect every so often, and autossh quits if the first attempt fails. My current workaround is a small script and a cronjob: # crontab /home/blackl/bin/script &! # script #!/bin/sh while true; do ssh -Ngn -R $some_port:localhost:22 $server; sleep 30; done; Is there a better way to do this, or will I just have to be happy with this for now?

• Xorg input devices fail without udev

  What I am trying to do: Launch Xorg server without udev device manager. What I have tried to do: Make sure that /dev/ has all required nodes, such as /dev/input/*. Make sure that all required kernel modules are loaded. Launch Xorg. What happens: Xorg starts up as excepted. Xorg loads correct GPU driver and sets right screen resolution. Xorg blocks all input devices (keyboard, mouse), Alt+F[1-12] does not work (can't go back to tty1). Unraw'ing keyboard to take its control from X removes blocking and after unraw I can Alt+F1 back to tty1. Xorg still does not handle any input. Why I think that it should work: Same configuration works well if udev is loaded. Loading udev does not add or modify /dev/ contents, all nodes stays same. My main question is: How to make Xorg input devices work without udev? Any additional information about how Xorg really uses/detects/grabs keyboard would be helpful. And any additional information about what udev really does (other than populating /dev/) would also be helpful.

• I have bought a custom domain and am using it with Gmail. All My mail is being sent as spam. What can I do?

  A while ago, I purchased my own custom domains for my websites. Before I moved them to Gmail, I just created the e-mails in my CPanel at Bluehost.com and worked from there. When the setup was like that, I could send and receive e-mail fine, and it wouldn't be marked as spam. Now I have moved these custom domains to send and receive e-mails at Gmail using Google apps. I have done everything. I have marked the domains as "Authorized" and I believe that should be enough for the mail I send with these custom e-mails is not send as spam. If it matters, I have configured my iPhone to use these custom domains with it and I'm sending all the e-mail from it. What can I do? I started doing all this today but apparently the DNS changes have already taken place. Is there something I have to do, or is it a matter of waiting 48 hours for my mail to not be marked as spam by other providers yet? EDIT: If I send mail via Gmail itself, the mail is delivered fine. If I use my iPhone however, it gets marked as spam.

• Terminal is not letting me make commands unless I hit enter a bunch of times

  Whenever I open terminal it normally allows me to immediately begin making commands. Only earlier today I did the setup for github here https://help.github.com/articles/set-up-git And then all of a sudden the thing where I give terminal commands won't allow me to give it commands unless I hit enter a few times. This is what it looks like: Last login: Fri Nov 9 11:43:28 on ttys001 mysql.save: Permission denied mysql.save: Permission denied /Users/Nick/.zshrc:32: command not found:  . ~ git: ? ~ git: ? ~ git: ? See the big space? That's because it simply will never show the ~ git: thing unless I hit enter 3-4 times. Also, it never used to say ~ git: before I did the git setup. I'm not sure what I changed. I've checked the zshrc file and commented everything out to find the line causing the problem. • Count the Number of Characters in a Full FIle Path?

  I need to be able to count the number of characters in a full path to a file in windows. How I am currently accomplishing this task is as follows: Open a command prompt cd to the directory in question (for example c:\CruiseControl\ProjectArtifacts\ProjectName) type the following command dir /s /b output.csv Open the resulting output.csv file in excel. use the =LEN() function in excel to count the number of characters per row as listed in the output.csv file. Does anyone know of an explorer shell extension, or some 3rd party tool that could preform this function without me having to manipulate the output from dir in excel? Is there some easier way to go about doing this? The root of the issue I am having is the ~260 character file path limit in Windows. I am trying to analyze which paths are approx ~260 characters so I can shorten them to avoid getting this error.

• Windows 8 Activation - Product ID: Not available

  The situation: I downloaded Windows 8 RTM from MSDN (I have a subscription). Naturally, I downloaded the product key as well. Windows 8 installed like a dream: lightning fast with no problems. I accepted the product key at the beginning of the install. Next, I thought I would download Updates, but they failed, so I checked the system's activation in Control Panel System. Problem: It returned "Product ID: Not available." There's nothing under "Windows activation" that I can click on, no blue links. I had a 'Chat' with MSDN, who introduced me to SLUI.exe. On Windows 8 it did nothing. (On Windows 7 it is supposed to bring up the Activation Menu). I phoned the Microsoft Activation number, they told me to contact MSDN. MSDN left the 'chat' by telling me to contact Microsoft! Hmm... I wonder if anyone at SuperUser can help?

• Extract and view Outlook contacts attachment sent to Gmail

  A friend forwarded a contact list to my gmail account from Outlook (2007 or 2010, not sure which). I can see there is an attachment in gmail but when I save it to my local drive it's just a plain text file containing the text This attachment is a MAPI 1.0 embedded message and is not supported by this mail system.   Let's assume we have a small Word document containing: First Title On Level A Lorem ipsum .. Title On Level B Lorem ipsum .. Second Title On Level A Lorem ipsum .. What I would like to achive is the following: 1. First Title On Level A Lorem ipsum .. 1.1 Title On Level B Lorem ipsum .. 2. Second Title On Level A Lorem ipsum .. I can't set this up by simply adding numbering to the title styles, because that only adds one number to the title without support for the x.y number format.

  MySQL Connector/Net 6.6, a new version of the all-managed .NET driver for MySQL has been released.  This is the GA intended to introduce users to the new features in the release.  This release is feature complete. It is recommended for use in production environments.    Devoxx, the biggest Java conference in Europe, is  only a couple of days away. From November 12th to  16th, over 3,400 developers from all over Europe  are descending on Antwerp, Belgium for a week  focused on Java.  At the Oracle booth, Java experts will be available  to answer your  questions and demo the new  features of the Java Platform, including Java  Embedded,  JavaFX, JavaSE and Java EE.  Beer bash at the booth Tuesday from 17:30-19:30 and Wednesday/Thursday from 18:00 to 20:00. • How Social Is Your Contact Center?

  More than 75% of consumers have complained on a social site after a poor customer experience. Yet, 70% of companies have little understanding of the social media conversations about their brand. To deliver upon your brand promise, retain customers, and increase their lifetime value, you must deliver great customer experiences across social, mobile, phone, and chat channels. Siloed channels produce poor customer experiences. Social channels must integrate with the people, processes, technology, and traditional channels used to satisfy customers. The more effective a company’s social marketing, the greater the demand for effective social service. However, service is not a job for social marketers. It is a job for service specialists, focused on KPIs such as response time, first contact resolution, satisfaction, churn, retention, and customer lifetime value. Most social-enabled contact centers are at the early adopter stage, attempting to “bolt on” social media as a side process. Many are experiencing inconsistent customer experiences, higher costs, and negligible return on investments. • Powerful Lessons in Data from the Presidential Election

  Now that we’ve had a few days to recover from the U.S. presidential election, it’s a good time to take a step back from politics and look for the customer experience lessons that we can take away. The most powerful lesson is that when you know more about your base, you will have an advantage over your competition. That advantage will translate into you winning and your competition losing. Michael Scherer of TIME was given access to Obama’s data analysts two days before the election. His account is documented in Inside the Secret World of the Data Crunchers Who Helped Obama Win. What we learned from Scherer’s inside view is how well Obama’s team did in getting the right data, analyzing it, and acting on it. This data team recognized how critical it was to break down data silos within the campaign. As Scherer noted, they created “a single system that merged information from pollsters, fundraisers, field workers, consumer databases, and social-media and mobile contacts with the main Democratic voter files in the swing states.” The Obama analysis was so meticulous that they knew which celebrity and which type of celebrity event would help them maximize campaign contributions. With a single system, their data models became more precise. They determined which messages were more successful with specific demographic groups and that who made the calls mattered. Data analysis also led to many other changes in Obama’s campaign including a new ad buying strategy, using social media and applications to tap into supporters’ friends, and using new social news sites. While we did not have that same inside view into Romney’s campaign, much of the post-mortem coverage indicates that Romney’s team did not have the right analysis. As Peter Hamby of CNN wrote in Analysis: Why Romney Lost, “Romney officials had modeled an electorate that looked something like a mix of 2004 and 2008….” That historical data did not account for the changing demographics in the U.S. Does your organization approach data like the Obama or Romney team? Do you really know your base? How well can you predict what is going to happen in your business? If you haven’t already put together a strategy and plan to know more, this week’s civics lesson is a powerful reason to do it sooner rather than later. Your competitors are probably thinking the same thing that you are!

• Evaluating Solutions to Manage Product Compliance? Don't Wait Much Longer

  Depending on severity, product compliance issues can cause all sorts of problems from run-away budgets to business closures. But effective policies and safeguards can create a strong foundation for innovation, productivity, market penetration and competitive advantage. If you’ve been putting off a systematic approach to product compliance, it is time to reconsider that decision, or indecision. Why now?  No matter what industry, companies face a litany of worldwide and regional regulations that require proof of product compliance and environmental friendliness for market access.  For example, Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) is a regulation that restricts the use of six dangerous materials used in the manufacture of electronic and electrical equipment.  ROHS was originally adopted by the European Union in 2003 for implementation in 2006, and it has evolved over time through various regional versions for North America, China, Japan, Korea, Norway and Turkey.  In addition, the RoHS directive allowed for material exemptions used in Medical Devices, but that exemption ends in 2014.   Additional regulations worth watching are the Battery Directive, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), and Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) directives.  Additional evolving regulations are coming from governing bodies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Corporate sustainability initiatives are also gaining urgency and influencing product design. In a survey of 405 corporations in the Global 500 by Carbon Disclosure Project, co-written by PwC (CDP Global 500 Climate Change Report 2012 entitled Business Resilience in an Uncertain, Resource-Constrained World), 48% of the respondents indicated they saw potential to create new products and business services as a response to climate change. Just 21% reported a dedicated budget for the research. However, the report goes on to explain that those few companies are winning over new customers and driving additional profits by exploiting their abilities to adapt to environmental needs. The article cites Dell as an example – Dell has invested in research to develop new products designed to reduce its customers’ emissions by more than 10 million metric tons of CO2e per year. This reduction in emissions should save Dell’s customers over $1billion per year as a result! Over time we expect to see many additional companies prove that eco-design provides marketplace benefits through differentiation and direct customer value. How do you meet compliance requirements and also successfully invest in eco-friendly designs? No doubt companies struggle to answer this question. After all, the journey to get there may involve transforming business models, go-to-market strategies, supply networks, quality assurance policies and compliance processes per the rapidly evolving global and regional directives. There may be limited executive focus on the initiative, inability to quantify noncompliance, or not enough resources to justify investment. To make things even more difficult to address, compliance responsibility can be a passionate topic within an organization, making the prospect of change on an enterprise scale problematic and time-consuming. Without a single source of truth for product data and without proper processes in place, ensuring product compliance burgeons into a crushing task that is cost-prohibitive and overwhelming to an organization. With all the overhead, certain markets or demographics become simply inaccessible. Therefore, the risk to consumer goodwill and satisfaction, revenue, business continuity, and market potential is too great not to solve the compliance challenge. Companies are beginning to adapt and even thrive in today’s highly regulated and transparent environment by implementing systematic approaches to product compliance that are more than functional bandages but revenue-generating engines.
