  • How to set minimum SQL Server resource allocation for a database?

    - by Jeff Widmer
Over the past Christmas holiday week, when the website I work on was experiencing very low traffic, we saw several Request timed out exceptions (one on each day 12/26, 12/28, 12/29, and 12/30) on several pages that require user authentication. We rarely saw Request timed out exceptions prior to this very low traffic week. We believe the timeouts were due to the database that it uses being "spun down" on the SQL Server and taking longer to spin up when a request came in. There are 2 databases on the SQL Server (SQL Server 2005), one which is specifically for this application and the other for the public facing website and for authentication; so in the case where users were not logged into the application (which definitely could have been for several hours at a time over Christmas week) the application database probably received no requests. We think at this point SQL Server reallocated resources to the other database and then when a request came in, extra time was needed to spin up the application database and the timeout occurred. Is there a way to tell SQL Server to give a minimum amount of resources to a database at all times?

  • Laptop HDMI out to monitor DVI in

    - by Roy Rico
I have a laptop that i'm trying to fix, and it has HDMI out. I have a cable i bought for my HTPC which does DVI out to HDMI in, which worked fine. Was hoping to be able to use this same cable for HDMI out to DVI in, is it possible? UPDATE: Point of clarification, The laptop's display doesn't work (it was dropped) and I'm trying to figure out what's working and what isn't. in addition to HDMI out, it has VGA out, but that seems to have a short in it, and doesn't display properly (sometimes it works, sometimes, it shows stuff in 256 colors in 800x640). I can tell the LCD screen works (comes on) so i think it's whatever is carrying the data to it that doesn't work. I know more often than know, the display is what breaks... The cable i'm using is a standard HDMI to DVI cable, there are no audio connections or anything. Thanks!

  • Event Capturing vs Event Bubbling

    - by Rajat
I just wanted to get the general consensus on which is a better mode of event delegation in JS between bubbling and capturing. Now I understand that depending on a particular use-case, one might want to use capturing phase over bubbling or vice versa but I want to understand what delegation mode is preferred for most general cases and why (to me it seems bubbling mode). Or to put it in other words, is there a reason behind W3C addEventListener implementation to favor the bubbling mode. [capturing is initiated only when you specify the 3rd parameter and its true. However, you can forget that 3rd param and bubbling mode is kicked in] I looked up the JQuery's bind function to get an answer to my question and it seems it doesn't even support events in capture phase (it seems to me because of IE not support capturing mode). So looks like bubbling mode is the default choice but why?

  • What is the standard convention for defining nested view:viewmodel mapping in MVVM Light

    - by firoso
so in classic MVVM examples ive seen DataTemplate definitions are used to map up View Models to Views, what is the standard way to do this in MVVM Light framework, and where should the mappings be located? Following are examples of what I'm doing now and what I'm talking about, blendability is important to me! Main Window: <Window xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" x:Class="STS2Editor.MainWindow" Title="{Binding ApplicationTitle, Mode=OneWay}" DataContext="{Binding RootViewModel, Source={StaticResource Locator}}"> <Window.Resources> <ResourceDictionary> <ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries> <ResourceDictionary Source="Skins/ApplicationSkin.xaml" /> <ResourceDictionary Source="Resources/ViewMappings.xaml" /> </ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries> </ResourceDictionary> </Window.Resources> <Grid> <ContentControl Content="{Binding ApplicationManagementViewModel}" HorizontalAlignment="Left" VerticalAlignment="Top"/> </Grid> </Window> In the above code, my RootViewModel class has an instance of the class ApplicationManagementViewModel with the same property name: public ApplicationManagementViewModel ApplicationManagementViewModel {get {...} set {...} } I reference the ResourceDictionary "ViewMappings.xaml" to specify how my view model is represented as a view. <ResourceDictionary xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:local="clr-namespace:STS2Editor.ViewModel"> <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type local:ApplicationManagementViewModel}"> <local:ApplicationManagementView/> </DataTemplate> </ResourceDictionary> should I be doing things like this using ViewModelLocator? what about collections of view models?

  • Looking for an elegant appwidget skin solution

    - by sam-henwood
I have an appwidget application and would like to enable users to create skins which can be applied at runtime. My preferred solution is to use apk files with nine patch png images that stretch to fit the ImageView's of widget, however its starting to look like I might have to use another packaging technique (e.g. zip files). What I've tried: Importing nine patch resources as Drawable with context.getResourcesForApplication(my.app).getResources..., converting them to bitmaps using a canvas and setting the bitmap to the RemoteView using setImageViewBitap. This didn't work because I needed to specify the size of the resulting view (myBitmap.setBounds(..,..)) during conversion and some of the widths/heights in my appwidget aren't fixed. Perhaps there is a way to get the heights etc that I missed. Importing resources directly to the RemoteView using setImageViewUri() This doesn't work because the function doesn't seem to read android.resource:// Uri's anymore (I poked around in the ImageView source and it only seems to read files paths and content:// Uri's) Importing resources directly to the RemoteView using setImageViewResource() which didn't work because the id retrieved from the external package obviously doesn't include a package reference. What I'm trying to avoid is hard coding all my appwidget width's and height's, or using a separate packaging scheme. Has anyone implemented appwidget skins nicely and want to share the knowledge? Alternately there might be a hole in my logic somewhere that can be pointed out. I can provide code if required though I don't have any here right now.

I implemented one service and it has several configuration item, such as data type, next node, blablabla. What I want to do is to deploy the service and configuration file into tomcat within one .aar. However, if I jar the service and configuration file into the aar. The service can't read the file though the file is there in the same directory. Even I put the file into tomcat_home\bin, the service fails to read the file. I know it should work. • Floating point conversion from Fixed point algorithm

    - by Viks
Hi, I have an application which is using 24 bit fixed point calculation.I am porting it to a hardware which does support floating point, so for speed optimization I need to convert all fixed point based calculation to floating point based calculation. For this code snippet, It is calculating mantissa for(i=0;i<8207;i++) { // Do n^8/7 calculation and store // it in mantissa and exponent, scaled to // fixed point precision. } So since this calculation, does convert an integer to mantissa and exponent scaled to fixed point precision(23 bit). When I tried converting it to float, by dividing the mantissa part by precision bits and subtracting the exponent part by precision bit, it really does' t work. Please help suggesting a better way of doing it.

  • Why the cucumber features keeps running even though it fails?

    - by Millisami
Its a rails 2.3.5 app. I'm using the rspec and cucumber for testing. When I run autospec, it runs correctly with the warning (Not running features. To run features in autotest, set AUTOFEATURE=true.) as below: [~/rails_apps/automation (campaign)?] ? autospec (Not running features. To run features in autotest, set AUTOFEATURE=true.) (Not running features. To run features in autotest, set AUTOFEATURE=true.) loading autotest/rails_rspec /home/millisami/.rvm/rubies/ree-1.8.7-2010.01/lib/ruby/1.8/pathname.rb:263: warning: `*' interpreted as argument prefix /home/millisami/.rvm/rubies/ree-1.8.7-2010.01/bin/ruby /home/millisami/.rvm/gems/ree-1.8.7-2010.01/gems/rspec-1.3.0/bin/spec --autospec /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/controllers/campaigns_controller_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/board_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/user_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/campaign_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/controllers/outlets_controller_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/controllers/boards_controller_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/outlet_type_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/vendor_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/controllers/brands_controller_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/controllers/vendors_controller_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/controllers/dashboard_controller_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/brand_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/helpers/dashboard_helper_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/outlet_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/client_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/controllers/clients_controller_spec.rb -O spec/spec.opts Now, as it suggests, when I run AUTOFEATURE=true autospec, the specs runs and the cuke features as well. But the problem is that it won't stop. It runs the features and runs them again and again in a loop. It doesn't stop after it fails. Is this due to the warning Warning: $KCODE is NONE as shown below?? [~/rails_apps/automation (campaign)?] ? AUTOFEATURE=true autospec loading autotest/cucumber_rails_rspec Warning: $KCODE is NONE. /home/millisami/.rvm/gems/ree-1.8.7-2010.01/gems/treetop-1.4.5/lib/treetop/ruby_extensions/string.rb:31: warning: method redefined; discarding old indent /home/millisami/.rvm/rubies/ree-1.8.7-2010.01/lib/ruby/1.8/pathname.rb:263: warning: `*' interpreted as argument prefix /home/millisami/.rvm/gems/ree-1.8.7-2010.01/gems/activesupport-2.3.5/lib/active_support/core_ext/object/blank.rb:49: warning: method redefined; discarding old blank? /home/millisami/.rvm/rubies/ree-1.8.7-2010.01/bin/ruby /home/millisami/.rvm/gems/ree-1.8.7-2010.01/gems/rspec-1.3.0/bin/spec --autospec /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/controllers/campaigns_controller_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/board_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/user_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/campaign_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/controllers/outlets_controller_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/controllers/boards_controller_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/outlet_type_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/vendor_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/controllers/brands_controller_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/controllers/vendors_controller_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/controllers/dashboard_controller_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/brand_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/helpers/dashboard_helper_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/outlet_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/models/client_spec.rb /home/millisami/rails_apps/automation/spec/controllers/clients_controller_spec.rb -O spec/spec.opts

  • How to implement "circular side-scrolling" in my game?

    - by Mr.Gando
I'm developing a game, a big part of this game, is about scrolling a "circular" background ( the right end of the Background Image can connect with the left start of the Background image ). Should be something like this: ( Entity moving and arrow to show where the background should start to repeat ) This happens in order to allow to have an Entity walking, and the background repeating itself over and over again. I'm not working with tile-maps, the background is a simple Texture (400x300 px). Could anyone point me to a link , or tell me the best way I could accomplish this ? Thanks a lot.

  • How do I make a jQuery POST function open the new page?

    - by ciclistadan
I know that a submit button in HTML can submit a form which opens the target page, but how do I cause a jQuery ajax call POST information to a new page and display the new page. I am submitting information that is gathered by clicking elements (which toggle a new class) and then all items with this new class are added to an array and POSTed to a new page. I can get it to POST the data but it seems to be working functioning in an ajax non-refreshing manner, not submitting the page and redirecting to the new page. how might I go about doing this? here's the script section: //onload function $(function() { //toggles items to mark them for purchase //add event handler for selecting items $(".line").click(function() { //get the lines item number var item = $(this).toggleClass("select").attr("name"); }); $('#process').click(function() { var items = []; //place selected numbers in a string $('.line.select').each(function(index){ items.push($(this).attr('name')); }); $.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: 'additem.php', data: 'items='+items, success: function(){ $('#menu').hide(function(){ $('#success').fadeIn(); }); } }); }); return false; }); any pointers would be great!! thanks

  • Errata for Java Language Specification 3rd Edition

    - by polygenelubricants
I use JLS extensively both as a learning and teaching resource, but I've noticed that there are some errors in it. There's the simple typos (e.g. JLS 5.1.4 "convesions"), but there's also some that I consider quite serious errors. For example, JLS 18.1 The Grammar of the Java Programming Language is supposed to be the authoritative reference for the grammar of the Java language, but it contains a production rule that never gets used! (e.g. MoreStatementExpressions). Surely this is a sign of more serious errors in other parts of the given grammar, right? So is there an errata for the 3rd edition? Will there ever be? Should we send errors we've found to Sun/Oracle? Will there ever be a 4th edition?

  • Change the install directory for an OSX Package

    - by Scott
It drives me nuts that every time I download a binary to run on OSX that it wants to install in system directories. ~/Applications is a perfectly fine place to install and doesn't require blindly authenticating somebody else's binary. Is there a way to change the install directory for packages? On a few I've been able to open the package and edit the plist to install it elsewhere, but that doesn't work universally. I install from source when I can, but it isn't always an option. Is there a good way to force the installer to use ~/Applications?

  • When and How is an image cached for an ASPX with ContentType = image/jpeg ?

    - by Aamir Hasan
In asp.net you can cache your page. You can vary the output cache by the followingThe query string in an initial request (HTTP GET).Control values passed on postback (HTTP POST values). The HTTP headers passed with a request. The major version number of the browser making the request.      A custom string in the page. In that case, you create custom code in the Global.asax file to specify the page's caching behavior.Link: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/xadzbzd6(VS.80).aspxyou can set the output caching for your GetImage.aspx, so that you dont have to requery the database every image request ,but you must use varybyParam , so that you have a cached version for every parameters arrangement:set the output cache for your page like this :At top of ASPX page: <%@ OutputCache Duration="600" VaryByParam="ID,Height,Width" %>VaryByParam  attribute allows you to vary the cached output depending on the query string.Adding this will make your images cached for 600 seconds, so that if the image request within this period ,the cahed version will be returned

  • Worthless Anti-Spam (What can we learn)

    - by smehaffie
I recently can across a site that had a “anti-spam” field at the bottom of the entry from.  The first issue I had with it was that at 1280X800 you could not read the value you were suppose to enter (see below).  You tell me, should you enter div, dlv, piv, or plv. But even worse than not being readable at high resolutions is the fact that the programmer who coded it really did not understand what this was used for.  An anti-spam (aka: catpcha) entry field should not be able to be read by looking at the HTML DOM object (so entry of value cannot be scripted).  In this case the value is simply a disabled text input filed that has the value you need to type.  So a hacker would simply need to search for text input field named “spam2” and then they could flood the site with spam. 1: <td> 2: <label> 3: <input name="spam1" type="text" class="small" id="spam1" size="6" maxlength="3" /> 4: <input name="spam2" type="text" class="small" id="spam2" value="plv" 5: disabled="disabled" size="6" maxlength="3" /> 6: * <span class="small">- Anti-SPAM key - please enter matching value</span> 7: </label> 8: </td>   There are some things to learn from this example: 1) Always make sure you understand why you are coding a feature/function for any program you write.  Just following the requirements without realizing the “why” will sooner or later come back to bite you.  I think the above example appears to be an example of this. 2) Always check how the screen appears in different resolutions.  In this case it was pretty much unreadable in 1280x800, but you could read it in 800X600 (but most people I know do not have their resolution set that low).  Lucky for me I could “View Source” and get the value I needed to enter.

  • Fun projects to do with an old 17" LCD Monitor

    - by Adam Haile
I've got an old 17" LCD that I've had for nearly 9 years now but still works pretty well. It's been my secondary monitor for a few years, but I just got a new 24" monitor, so my current main LCD (19") will become the new secondary screen. Any good suggestions of interesting (and preferably cheap/free) hacks, etc. I could do with this old monitor? I don't want to just throw it out. For example, is there an easy way to turn it into a touch screen or something? I'm open to suggestions

  • How do I assign selected WPF datagrid row columns to variables. (VB.NET)

    - by Peter
Hi, I have a datagrid with customer data such as ID, name, email, phone etc. When I select a row (with a button or selectionchanged) I want to store that row's columns in variables like dim email as string dim name as string email = dgCustomers.theselectedrow.theselectedcell name = dgCustomers.theselectedrow.theselectedcell If I have a datatable with only one row I know I can get column data with: dim email as string = CustomerDataTableInstance.rows(0).Item("Email") I don't know how to get the selected row number though when I have several rows and the user clicks one/uses the keyboard. The datagrid is bound to a datatable, not a class with object collections. Any help is appreciated!
