• Windows Server 2008 scheduled tasks cannot create files

  We have a series of tasks which, when run interactively over the command line run fine creating temporary files and (importantly) logs and backups. When we schedule the task with Administrator privileges to run at the highest priority, however, no logs or temporary files are created! All the directories have read/write privileges as administrator. Has anyone else experienced this?? We are running Windows 2008 Server & the job is configured for 'Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008'. Any help would be much appreciated! OK - so we installed Z-Cron and it works perfectly.... Still a really really strange error from Windows 2008 Task Scheduler, but a solution is perhaps not quite so urgent now we have Z-Cron working!

• mod_jk problem: Tomcat is probably not started or is listening on the wrong port

  Hi, I am running some application on Tomcat 6.0.26. There is Apache in front of web server talking to it over mod_jk. Every few hours when I try to access application browser simply spins, and no content is retrieved. • Installing IIS on MS Windows Server 2003

  I have a Windows Server 2003 and asp.net website running on localhost. I have to install php and mysql, but php installation doesn't work for whatever reason. I was wondering if I could install package such as xampp on windows server to save time and hassle installing in manually (I could not find a tutorial for this). I was wondering though, if it is safe, i.e. what will happen if I go to http://localhost/ - will I get the php or asp website? In general, is it safe to install xampp on windows server 2003? All advice greatly appreciated

• Cisco Unifed Communication integration for Microsoft Lync crashes on Remote Desktop services 2008 R2!

  a friend of mine asked me to re-install his Asus F5Z notebook with Windows XP. I installed succcessfully all drivers from assus driver download site. Everything is working fine but ethernet driver. The installation of Lan Driver for WIN XP finishes with strange message "Please shutdown & plug Realtech PCI-e card to complete the installation. Not sure if it matters but OnChip SATA is in 'Native IDE' mode . The original one with Vista was 'IDE - AHCI mode'. Any idea how I can make the LAN adapter to work under Windows XP?

• Windows 7 Locks Up or Blue Screens after installing additional hard drive

  I've had my home theater pc for over a year now and it's been running with no problems what so ever. I got myself a new Seagate 2 TB hard drive for the holidays and ever since installing it the pc now randomly locks up or blue screens either upon putting it to sleep or waking it from sleep. The only thing I've tried so far is updating the firmware on the hard drive. I do have my minidump file saved off on my home theater pc however right now I'm at work and don't have access to it. Please help! Thank you!

• Windows 7 SSH file server

  Hello all- I have looked at the other posts, but have not quite found an answer I have a question about windows file sharing over SSH. I have copssh installed and it is working for Remote desktop connections. I have port 22 forwarded on my router etc. I connect from a Mac or Putty with this address: ssh -l copsshusername 3391:localhost:3389 [external ip] That works fine. I would like to configure Windows 7 to allow my ssh account that I use to login, access to certain shared folders. I have documents and videos and things that I would like to be able to download externally. I have done this before on Linux and a long time ago on XP, but I cannot figure out what I am missing on Windows 7. There is a designated SSH user that copssh uses to run the service and that I use to to login as. I have googled and googled and have not found a solution that does everything I need that is why I am turning here for ideas. I hope I am explaining this correctly. • Use all 5.1 speakers with a 2.1 audio source

  Hi! I just bought a 5.1 surround sound speaker set for my computer in my bedroom. The rear speakers are next to me in bed while the front speakers are at the other end of the bed at my feet. While I enjoy the surround sound during movies that support 5.1 sound, I would like to have my rear speakers working when listening to podcasts, or other 2.1 channel sound. How can I do this? When I enable "Speaker Fill" in the Realtek Hd Audio manager the sound only comes out of the front and center speakers with a few background noises that come out the rear ones. But since my ears are closer to the rear speakers, I'd rather have the sound come out of them. Let me know of any ideas! Hmm seems like the only option is to set the rear speakers to "Front Speakers" and change it to stereo in the Realtek HD audio. But still that take alot of steps and it doesnt not use the center speaker Thanks

• Songbird very slow, freezes

  I've read on few places that Songbird is no good with more than some thousands of library items because it starts getting quite slow. Well, in my case (which is a clean install) I've imported 17k items (which I know is not that much) and instead of becoming just too slow it frequently gets to not responding for several minutes until getting back to its senses again. That's for whichever random operation such as deleting 1 item from library. I've also read on few more places that gives very little hope on fixing this issue, but I wonder... Is there any way to tweak it and make it work as fast as expected? Am I missing something or is the software just not intended for libraries with more than 10 thousand thingies?

  My company has recently switched to an Agile WoW and as a part of it we've started using SCRUM. While I'm very comfortable with it and feel that this WoW is superior to a traditional one, some of my teammates don't share the same opinion. In fact they are very skeptical about "all that agile stuff", and don't take it seriously. As an example, one of the teammates is always late on the meetings, and doesn't really care about it. The management IMO tries not to notice this (maybe because it's a new Wow, and it takes time for the people to get used to it). Everything worked fine, however I can't seem to manage to create unicode databases: -- This doesn't work createdb test1 --encoding UNICODE -- This works createdb test2 The error message "createdb: database creation failed: ERROR: new encoding (UTF8) is incompatible with the encoding of the template database (SQL_ASCII)" is a bit puzzling because (afaik) I don't use a template for creating the new db, or is it implicitely referring to the default "postgres" database for some reason ? Or maybe I'm missing a setting in a .conf file ?

  I received this bit of advice about the meta description tag recently: Meta descriptions are used by Google probably 80% of the time for the snippet. They don’t help with rankings but you should probably use them. You could just auto generate them from the first part of the question. The description tag exists in the header, like so: <meta name="Description" content="A brief summary of the content on the page."> I'm not sure why we would need this field, as Google seems perfectly capable of showing the relevant search terms in context in the search result pages, like so (I searched for c# list performance): In other words, where would a meta description summary improve these results? We want the page to show context around the actual search hits, not a random summary we inserted! Google Webmaster Central has this advice: For some sites, like news media sources, generating an accurate and unique description for each page is easy: since each article is hand-written, it takes minimal effort to also add a one-sentence description. For larger database-driven sites, like product aggregators, hand-written descriptions are more difficult. In the latter case, though, programmatic generation of the descriptions can be appropriate and is encouraged -- just make sure that your descriptions are not "spammy." Good descriptions are human-readable and diverse, as we talked about in the first point above. The page-specific data we mentioned in the second point is a good candidate for programmatic generation. I'm struggling to think of any scenario when I would want the Google-generated summary, that is, actual context from the page for the search terms, to be replaced by a hard-coded meta description summary of the question itself.

• Moving from a static site to a CMS with new URLs and meta-data for pages

  Hi I am in the process of rebuilding a site from static pages to a CMS which will be using mod_rewrite to generate new page URLs. In this process our marketing people and myself have decided to tidy up the descriptions, keywords and titles. Eg: a page which who's URL is currently "website-name/about_us.html" and has a title of "website-name - something not quite page specific" will change to "website-name/about-us/" and title: "about us - website-name" and may have a few keywords and the description changed. Our goal with updating the meta data is to improve our page rankings and try to keep in line with some best practices for SEO. Though our current page rankings are quite good in many aspects, there is room for improvement. All of the pages will also have content changes (like rearranging heading tags, new menu on all pages, new content in footer, extra pieces of dynamic content relating to other pages). In this new site process I plan to use 301 redirects for all the old URLs pointing to the new URLs. My question is what can I expect to happen to the page rankings in Google, in the sort term and long term? Will this be like kicking off a new site which will have to build up trust over time or will the original page rankings have affect?

I am aware of Alexa's, Compete and Quantcast inaccuracies and/or limited system/range of sites to get their stats. I also know about websitegrader perhaps being a little more accurate (although not sure if that's the data I am after). And read Seomoz tools are reliable. I am yet though looking for a free solution, a 'reliable' Alexa. And not a place depending on a toolbar installation, an easy to trick place, or one with stats way too off, or of a very limited range of sites. I am almost sure there's nothing new, but I wanted to be sure.

Cygwin version is CYGWIN_NT-6.1-WOW64 1.7.7(0.230/5/3) 2010-08-31 09:58 i686 Cygwin In my makefile used to build the source, when i say VERBOSE=yes, i still do not see detailed commands and options used to compile,link the code. So basically VEROBSE=yes behaviour seems to be same as VERBOSE=no. Pls. note that the compiler (sparc-elf-gcc) which the make command invokes, is configured with --verbose option. I verified that by checking sparc-elf-gcc -v . Is this switch removed/deprecated for this particular gnumake/cygwin versions or any pointers on how I can see details of the make/compile/link commands. thank you. -AD.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to bend the compiler to my will. An admittedly contrived example of what I have in mind: // generate a timing function val myTimer = mkTimer('myTimer) // see how the timing function returns the right type depending on the // type of the function it is passed to it val act = actor { loop { receive { case 'Int => val calc = myTimer { (1 to 100000).sum } val result = calc + 10 // calc must be Int self reply (result) case 'String => val calc = myTimer { (1 to 100000).mkString } val result = calc + " String" // calc must be String self reply (result) } Now, this is the farthest I got: trait Timing { def time[T <: Any](name: Symbol)(op: => T) :T = { val start = System.nanoTime val result = op val elapsed = System.nanoTime - start println(name + ": " + elapsed) result } def mkTimer[T <: Any](name: Symbol) : (() => T) => () => T = { type c = () => T time(name)(_ : c) } } Using the time function directly works and the compiler correctly uses the return type of the anonymous function to type the 'time' function: val bigString = time('timerBigString) { (1 to 100000).mkString("-") } println (bigString) Great as it seems, this pattern has a number of shortcomings: forces the user to reuse the same symbol at each invocation makes it more difficult to do more advanced stuff like predefined project-level timers does not allow the library to initialize once a data structure for 'timerBigString So here it comes mkTimer, that would allow me to partially apply the time function and reuse it. I use mkTimer like this: val myTimer = mkTimer('aTimer) val myString= myTimer { (1 to 100000).mkString("-") } println (myString) But I get a compiler error: error: type mismatch; found : String required: () => Nothing (1 to 100000).mkString("-") I get the same error if I inline the currying: val timerBigString = time('timerBigString) _ val bigString = timerBigString { (1 to 100000).mkString("-") } println (bigString) This works if I do val timerBigString = time('timerBigString) (_: String), but this is not what I want. I'd like to defer typing of the partially applied function until application. I conclude that the compiler is deciding the return type of the partial function when I first create it, chosing "Nothing" because it can't make a better informed choice. So I guess what I'm looking for is a sort of late-binding of the partially applied function. Is there any way to do this? Or maybe is there a completely different path I could follow? • how to order string logically

  Q: I have the following case : set of letters (grades) A,A+,A-,B,B+,B- stored as strings in the database i wanna to order these grades logically from the small one to the big one ,, but this not what happen in real.. because these are strings the order is: A,A+,A- i wanna ASC A-,A,A+ DESC A+,A,A- i bind those grades in drop down list and i wanna these grades with this logical order in it.. is there any idea how to do something like this..
