  • Optimize MySQL query (ngrams, COUNT(), GROUP BY, ORDER BY)

    I have a database with thousands of companies and their locations. I have implemented n-grams to optimize search. I am making one query to retrieve all the companies that match with the search query and another one to get a list with their locations and the number of companies in each location. The query I am trying to optimize is the latter. Maybe the problem is this: Every company ('anunciante') has a field ('estado') to make logical deletes. So, if 'estado' equals 1, the company should be retrieved. When I run the EXPLAIN command, it shows that it goes through almost 40k rows, when the actual result (the reality matching companies) are 80. How can I optimize this?   • Advantages/disadvantages of Python and Ruby

    I know this is going to seem a little like all the other python vs ruby question out there, but I'm not looking specifically to pick one over the other all the time. My question is, essentially, why would you use one language over the other when you are starting a new project? What features does ruby have that python doesn't that would make you decide on it for a given project? What about python over ruby? I was just recently thinking about the differentiation between the two languages because of Jamis Buck's "There is no magic, only awesome" series of articles (4 parts, available here) when I realized I really don't know enough about the two languages to know when to choose one over the other. I'm hoping to get objective answers from people who have experience with both languages, rather than just "python is better, ruby sucks" kind of responses. If you know of a feature in one language that doesn't exist in the other and is great in a certain situation, feel free to chime in and say why you think it's awesome. If you have another language comparable to these that you'd like to suggest pros/cons for, like groovy for example, that would be appreciated too.   • GWT-RPC vs HTTP Call - which is better??

My appln services are hosted as Java servlets and I am currently using HTTPProxy connections to fetch data from them.   • Free (as in beer) Reverse Image Search API/Library/Service

    TinEye provides a great way to "reverse" search by image (i.e. upload/transload an image and have multiple possible sources of that image returned as results.) Since screen-scraping is messy and unreliable, I'm looking for a free API/library/web-service that could offer the same (or similar) reverse-image search function. At present, TinEye offers a commercial API, but since I'll only be using the service for small personal projects, it's hard to justify the cost of the service (the lowest being 1,000 searches for $70 USD). Is anyone aware of such a free service? Or is there a simpler way to approach this (programmatic solution; any language)? I understand that this is a tall order, and submitting the question is really only a last resort in the hope that there is some solution.   • Limiting use of filesharing services

    I live in an apartment with 3 other roommates, and we share the internet connection though a wireless router (Level One WBR-3406TX). One of the roommates is always running utorrent, and it is slowing down everybody's connection way too much. Unfortunately, he feels like he shouldn't have to give up on downloading stuff, and is refusing to stop hogging the bandwidth. I was wondering if there's something I can do to the router configuration that would disrupt his use of utorrent just enough to to make the internet usable for the rest of us, and still have it work well enough for him so that he doesn't start poking around looking for answers.

  • Problem with an application in USB

    I have an application on a pen drive, which executes some flash files on the same USB flash drive. when i run the application with in the drive, the application just keeps running in the back ground without running the flash files. When i copy the application on desktop, it runs the flash files in the USB. Also i programmed the app to write log file, when i run the application with in USB, the app is running but the log file is not getting written, when i remove the pen drive, the file gets written. What might be the problem, I am using VC++ , VS 2008 to build the application.

  • 550 5.7.1 our Bulk Email Senders Guidelines

    Hello, I moved to a new server with integrated merak mail. since I forgot merak(used before), i missed to configure security options. So before I realize the issue, my smtp server was used by spammers for 2 days, hundreds times I configured security settings as what it should be (at least i hope) then i realize, i can't send e-mail to gmail or hotmail. gmail says "550 5.7.1 see our Bulk Email Senders Guidelines" yes, I saw its guidelines. first, I creat SPF records via msn senderID wizard. it completed very well. then as gmail says, I created DKIM dns records. (in Merak mail, there is option to create DKIM, i created it and save it to DNS as TXT record) it's been 2 days after doing the fixes above. but still i can't send mail gmail or hotmail. (P.S, some of my domain in merak is forwarded to my gmail account i mean when a mail arrives to [email protected] it will forward to my gmail. and the surprise it, merak mail can forward them very vell :S but can't still send mail from outlook etc.)

  • Backgroundworker haults in between

    I am starting a process lets say abc.exe in a background worker. In the begining everything works fine but in between the newly created process i.e. abc.exe haults. Although I am starting abc.exe as hidden window but I come to know about its hang as it stopes doing log writing. When I close my UI form then again abc.exe starts working. Can anybody tell me what could be the possible cause for this? I am not able to debug the issue as it can happen at any time, I can not replicate it. Please tell me as it is very urgent for me. If some more info is required then please revert back.

  • sd card folder is not being created in DDMS

    hi everyone , I am new to android. I intend to make video player which can play video from file as well as web URL. But the problem is that when my emulator runs , a sd card folder should be created in "File Explorer" tab of DDMS perspective in eclipse , which is not happening . That's why I am unable to push any file in the sd card and hence video is not being played.   • Seeting up MySQL database

    I do have single database and near about 11 tables. while my web page is opening informations from these 11 tables will be accessed same time. according to my current settings what I did now is for each table database is opening and closing. say I had given username and password to open databse for each table and close after retrieving information from that table. Is this the right way to do it?? I feel because of this the database is opeing and closing 11 times!!!! Am I right?? is this the right way to do that?? THanks Mathew

  • Is this a tableView issue or a CoreData Issue

    I have a CoreData-driven navigation app and I'm trying to figure out why It's crashing. I've got a hierarchy which is 3 view Controllers deep, all related by coredata relatioships, like this. TableViewA =relationship= TableViewB =relationship= TableViewC I'm honestly a novice at core data and I think my problem lies in the fetched results controller. I have one in TableViewA and another in TableViewB, and no matter how deep I go, the console always cites TableViewB's fetched results controller methods after a crash. Is this the problem? What's happening specifically is if I launch my app and drill down into the hierarchy of one record, let's call it Record1, I can delete sub records to my hearts content. Gone! no problem! But the second I go back to TableViewA and drill down into a different record, let's call that one Record2, and try to delete it's subrecords my app crashes, with the console citing this code from TableViewB as the problem. - (void)controllerWillChangeContent:(NSFetchedResultsController *)controller { // The fetch controller is about to start sending change notifications, so prepare the table view for updates. [self.tableView beginUpdates]; } When I go into the debugger, the specific method it always has a problem with is: if (![x.managedObjectContext save:&error]) { NSLog(@"Unresolved error %@, %@", error, [error userInfo]); abort(); } Just a confirmation of my idiocy with CoreData is all I'm looking for I think. Oh and how many ManagedObjectContexts should I have in an app of this type. I've been told I should have separate ones for adding content, which then should re-integrate into the main one.   • Load dll's from Environment Variable Path from a service

    We install Matlab Runtime on a machine, then we restart a .net windows service that invokes methods from the Matlab Runtime. The problem is that we receive TypeInitializationException errors until we restart windows. We think this happens because Environment Variables are not changed on services until restart and Matlab uses the %Path% variable to reference it's core DLL's. My question is, do you think I can change the %Path% variable so that Matlab will use it when referencing the core dll's for it's engine? Or is it possible to add a directory to the runtime DLL loading mechanism of .NET so that those Matlab core dll's would be referenced correctly without restarting the machine?   • browser cookie issue

    Hello everyone, In my previous understanding, for a web site, only login user of a web site (no matter what login/authentication approach is used) could have cookie as persistent identifier, so that if the user close the browser, open browser again to go to the same web site, the web site could remember the user. But I learned recently that it seems for non-login user, there could still be a cookie associated with the user (after the user close browser, and then open the browser again to go to the same web site, the web site could remember the user), and it is called browser cookie? Is that true? If it is true, who is responsible to set the browser cookie? i.e. need some coding/config at web server side, client browser configuration (without coding from server side), or both? How could web server access such cookie? Appreciate if any code samples. thanks in advance, George
