• DHCPD Offering ip address on wrong subnet

  I just recently added a new subnet for our wireless network to our DHCP configuration for the 192.168.254.0 subnet. Most of the time when wireless clients connect it works just fine. However, sometimes on seemingly random occasions the DHCP server will send out a DHCPOFFER with an IP address on the wrong subnet. Example: dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from MACADDRESS (ThinkBook2) via 192.168.254.1 dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 192.168.22.236 to MACADDRESS (ThinkBook2) via 192.168.254.1 Here is the subnet configuration in dhcpd.conf: subnet 192.168.254.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { option routers 192.168.254.1; range 192.168.254.34 192.168.254.254; default-lease-time 14400; authoritative; } How can I make sure the server always sends out an IP address on the right subnet?

• tar gzip slowing down server

  I have a backup script that: compress some files generate md5 copy the compressed file to another server. the other server finishes comparing MD5 (to find copy errors). Here it's the core script: nice -n 15 tar -czvf $BKP $PATH_BKP/*.* \ | xargs -I '{}' sh -c "test -f '{}' && md5sum '{}'" \ | tee $MD5 scp -l 80000 $BKP $SCP_BKP scp $MD5 $SCP_BKP This routine got CPU at 90% at gzip routine, slowing down the production server. I tried to add a nice -n 15 but server still hangs. I've already read 1 but the conversation didn't help me. What is the best approach to solve this issue ? I am open to new architectures/solutions :)

• Configure Web app for external access (IIS7), allowing only certain users via AD group. All users need internal access

  We have a Web app running in IIS7 (Server 2008 R2). I now need to allow external access with an SSL certificate, so certain users (e.g. the owner of the company) can use it remotely without VPN. They want to roll out the external access only to those specific users at first (thinking: a Windows credential prompt), BUT everyone will still need access internally (HTTP), without the prompt. I have the SSL cert installed on the server and public DNS configured. I've been trying to figure out how to work the authentication/authorization. I was thinking I need to disable Anonymous authn and set Windows authn, then I keep coming back to 'URL Authorization' in my research for the group setting; however, when I tried URL authz, (removed allow all, added allow rule for the special group), it broke the site internally (403.2 Forbidden, I believe it was). I thought maybe setting up a second site in IIS pointing to the same program would work, but the exact same thing happened (and again with a new app pool, just for kicks). So I guess my question is, how would you do this: allow external access, limited to users in a specific AD group, while still allowing internal access without a credentials prompt? How do I separate the external HTTPS and internal HTTP authorization requirements? Will I need to just copy the entire contents of the app in Windows Explorer to a new folder and create my external site from that? Is Windows authentication the correct option for this? I did come across this, which refers to creating a custom module.   My server performance is poor. At times SSH, top, and other features or commands are very slow to respond, taking several seconds or more. A query that normally takes 5 minutes can sometimes take 30 minutes. The database is mostly being used to do a spatial query (grid and summarize) on approximately 500GB of stored data spread between 4 tables. Restarting the server works as a temporary fix, but cannot be used as a long term solution. Any suggestions for how to diagnose and solve my performance issues? • How to debug high memory usage by registry?

  I have a windows 2008 r2 server running ADFS2 and some web apps that is having issues with low memory. Digging around I found that the 5.5 GB were being used under Kernel Memory (paged). Further digging with Poolmon, I discovered that the majority of that (5GB+) was being used by CM - configuration manager. Also known as the registry. I'm really now sure how to tell why the registry is using so much memory however, or how to release it? Looking at the physical registry files they don't appear that large. • Cage nuts - which way to insert them?

  Cage nuts can be inserted (in square holes) either with the flaps horizontal or vertical. I've seen and used both methods, but am still not sure which is best. Is there a recommended way of inserting them? If so, why is it the best way? From my own experience, the horizontal way (on the left) seems slightly better for no other reason than making it easier to insert or pry out the cage nut in a full rack (with the units above and below being populated), for example when replacing cage nuts with a snap-in rail. • Timesync on HyperV with CentOS 6.2

  I've got a CentOS VM (release 6.2) running under HyperV. I have integration services installed (part of base now), and CentOS shows the current clocksource is hyperv_clocksource, however my time in the VM is about 10 minutes fast after a week of uptime. My understanding of the new IC and plugable clocksource is that this shouldn't happen any more. Is there any additional configuration necessary to get the plugable clocksource to "work?" I know there are plenty of links about setting kernel options to PIT and various stuff like that, but those all seem to pre-date the integrated clocksource support, and as I understand it shouldn't be needed anylonger. Nor should ntpd nor adjtimex.

• Snort [PFSense] is configured but not blocking or generating alerts!

  I've got PFSense V 2.0-RC1 (i386) and I've got the latest version of Snort installed I've loaded up a bunch of rules from Oinkmaster, I've enabled all of the preprocessors, and I've ensured the service is started. When I let it sit for a while and then check my Alerts and Block list, there are no entries. Even when I test it by logging into Skype (skype is listed as a Rule from P2P), I don't get any entries in the logs. If you need any further information, please let me know... I simply can't figure this one out.

• changing the default port no of tomcat in ubuntu

  Hii all i am trying to change the port no of my tomcat server installed in ubuntu. for this i have changed the file server.xml and made a change there as: <Connector port="8081" protocol="HTTP/1.1" connectionTimeout="20000" URIEncoding="UTF-8" redirectPort="8443" /> But the problem is that whenever i try to open the localhost:8081 it is working fine but when i tried to open localhost:8080 then it is still accessible. So please explain this why this is happening. Secondly when i made the default port to 80 then localhost:80 or localhost then it was not accessible. So please explain this why this is happening. • FastCGI and Apache 500 error intermittently

  I have a FastCGI (mod_fastcgi)problem. It happens every once in a while, and does not casue a complete server meltdown, just 500 errors. Here are a couple things. First I am using APC so PHP is in control of it's own processes, not FastCGI. • Is it better to use a crowded 2.4GHz Wi-Fi channel 1, 6, 11 or "unused" 3, 4, 8, or 9?

  I understand that 2.4GHz Wi-Fi channels overlap, and that the only non-overlapping channels in the US are 1, 6, and 11. Generally, my signal strength on channels 1, 6, and 11 are much stronger than my neighbors' on the same channel. However, several of the channels may have 4 or 5 others on that same channel. In this scenario, is it better to use 3, 4, 8, or 9? Or is it better to use the crowded channels 1, 6, and 11? As a secondary question, does it even matter that my signal strength is much higher than theirs? Related: Why use wifi channels other than 1, 6 or 11?

• Windows 8 permissions (CHMOD) with XAMPP

  While I know that CHMOD is impossible in Windows, I do have a problem with permissions. I'm running XAMPP on Windows 8 Release Preview and I'm trying to install ModenaCam. However, I get an error message which tells me that two files are not writable (they are 666) and they need to be 777. The permissions for the files are correct (full control for everyone, owner is everyone), but I can't get this thing to work! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  One of my associates sent an email to me that was also sent to a client. The client's email address appears to be mangled, however. He says he sent it twice---the first one bounced and the second did not. The email address he sent it to was: [email protected] My searches on Google indicate that the MAILTO could be a bad protocol but I didn't know how the email address would be interpreted by exchange server. What email address was the email sent to, how did IMCEMAILTO get there, and does it have any change of getting delivered?

• Creating sharable sub-folders from PC to an iMac

  A client has two PCs and an iMac with shared folders. I managed to get the folders shared so that each PC can see them. I also was able to create a text file from each PC on the iMac. However, if PC #1 creates a new folder on the iMac, PC #2 can't see it. It appears the iMac does not automatically share it. Clicking "share" on the "get info" for the folder does not work. Is there some type of setting so that if a PC creates a folder that it is created with the owner of the iMac? Is there a way to automatically share new sub-folders on a share folder that is already shared?

• "Error encountered while BER decoding" in Adobe Acrobat Pro X when applying timestamp

  I have a tedious problem with Acrobat Pro X 10.1.3.23: when I want to apply a timestamp to a document I always get that error. I have configured VeriSign TSA server http://timestamp.verisign.com/scripts/timstamp.dll and it returns that error. I have tried Comodo CA http://timestamp.comodoca.com/authenticode and Aruba https://servizi.arubapec.it/tsa/ngrequest.php but all three returned the same exact error. My PDFs are now signed without a certified timestamp and this is a problem for me. I'm obliged to sign documents and apply a certified timestamp at the same time. This seems to be a common error in Acrobat, but I found no solution to it. Can somebody help me?

• Remove USB device from command line

  I'm constructing a backup script for Windows 7, and the last action I want it to perform is to safely "remove" the USB drive that it is backing up to. I am under the impression that plugging the drive into the SAME USB port all the time will keep the same DEV_ID, correct me if I'm wrong. With a Command Line (or PowerShell), how can I tell Windows to safely remove the hardware automatically without user input? Just as a place holder, other OSes that may have a way to do this would be great to know as well

• Eclipse CDT wont recognize standard library

  I work primarily on my desktop, but I started working on my mac laptop and noticed a problem with eclipse CDT. The standard library was underlined yellow and cout wouldn't work (It wouldn't recognize/find it). I tried restarting the program and that didn't work. I then tried to see if xcode would work, found that the version of xcode was too old, and updated xcode. Eclipse still didn't work, but xcode did. I tried re-installing eclipse to the new version and re-installing cdt. It still wouldn't work. Restarting my computer wont work either. I'm not sure if this helps (or even matters/applies) but when I type g++ --version into terminal, it doesn't work. (I don't know if that matters but some tutorial told me to do that to check if the compiler was working). So, in review, I have: Re-installed eclipse Restarted my computer Re-installed xcode (which I think has all the compilers eclipse uses.) Updated Eclipse Typed g++ --version to test compiler.

• Obtaining a DHCP IP address if static address is not available

They also take the laptop off site where they also need internet. Is there a way to configure their computer so that it will obtain an IP address automatically when the configured static address is not available (without making the user go into network configuration and changing to obtain automatically)?

• Distributed website server redundancy

  Assume a website infrastructure is very complicated and is fully distributed (probably like most large web companies). Am I right in thinking that although there are all these extra web servers to handle multiple client requests, there is still a single "machine" whereby users must enter? I am guessing this machine will be the one physically associated to the IP address? I ask because I need to know whether, in places where distributed systems exist, there is still a single point of failure- usually the control node or, in this example, the machine connected to the public internet? Surely there cannot be two machines connected to the internet, as they would have to have different IP addresses? This "machine" may not be a server per se, but maybe it is a piece of cisco equipment. I just need to know whether, in the real world, these distributed systems still have a particular section where they depend on the integrity of one electronic device?

• CD-R suddenly unreadable?

  I have a CD-R which has worked fine for a good while. All of a sudden, Windows can no longer read its data. It's not scratched, it's clean and Windows can detect the disk and usage of space on it. But whenever I attempt to access the data stored: Explorer crashes Or after 5-10 mins of trying to read it, it opens up and just shows a desktop.ini file in Explorer. This happens on multiple machines. Any ideas? Is there a way to recover the data? For example - some sector by sector recovery software if any exist for CD's?

• How can I read a comma delimited text file in a Windows batch file?

  I can get it to read the text file until it becomes a comma delimited text file. I would like to read the two variables on each line and test each one with a If statement for another condition. Problem is I can't read the variables properly. Tried many things but here is what I will post. • Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H MB problems

  I installed a new system last week. I've some issues with it. The system consists of a: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H with F9 BIOS (latest) Intel Core i5 3570K proccesor Sapphire Radeon HD7850 2x 8GB Corsair 1600MHz memory OCZ Vertex 2 120G SSD Connected peripherals : 2 Samsung 940BF (1 via DVI on GFX card, 1 via an Displayport to DVI adapter) 1 Dell U2312HM monitor (displayport) Dell USB Hub (monitor) Wired mouse, wireless keyboard (logitech) Logitch G25 wheel Canon MP800 printer Okay, my issues are the following: if I plug in 1 or more monitor at DisplayPort during boot, most of the time it won't boot properly. I get an empty message screen of UEFI: only the header GIGABYTE DUEL BIOS appears. The system reboots itself, turns on for a few seconds (no video) and then reboots again. Now it starts all over again. This repeats until I remove all displayport monitors. Windows boots, and I can use them when I replug them. The graphics card has been running fine for a few weeks on an older system (intel Q6600). Another issue is; if I plug in my G25 steering wheel, the UEFI BIOS is inaccessible. It either gives the same empty UEFI screen, or the BIOS screen is rendering but crashes half way (so pieces of text and graphics are missing, and it has crashed). If I remove the G25, all is fine. To verify the graphics card is OK and the motherboard is causing these issues, I tried an NVIDIA 8800GT graphics card. This hasn't got Displayport, but it also cannot boot the BIOS with the G25 wheel plugged in. The PC also refuses to go into or out of standby. It just hangs when going into standby, and in other occasions (when it does succesfully do so) get out of standby. Power supply is OCZ StealthXStream 600W. Proccesor is 25 - 30C idle, ~55C stressed (Scythe Mugen 2). I am really puzzled what can be done to resolve this. I am not really waiting for an RMA request (otherwise I will return the MB for another type), because it will likely mean I have to wait very long before I get a replacement. Anyone else with a similar experience on this board/chipset or can help me troubleshoot this?
