  • What Can I Do To One Of My Team Number (Good Friend As Well) Who Lost His Passion.

    It seems this question is not program related, but there are lot of similar questions. So please bear with me! By the way, I am programmer and my team is also charging a software project. And SO is the only place which solved me lot of thorny troubles!THANK YOU GUYS! I joined my company with him years ago. At that time he was quite passionate on his job which is a front-end development. He gave us lot of useful suggestions concerning his work like design. And I believed he was a smart guy. I believe he still is smart too by the way. One years later, however, he seemed lost his passion and fooling around every day, did not care about his work any more and produced poorwork. Even worse he literally stopped learning new skills and honing his work related skills. For me it is horrible, we got to keep abreast with new technology development, otherwise we will be throw out. Since we were just coworkers, I did not care about it too much except mentioned my thoughts several times. But last month, we resembled a new group and assigned very important project. And I am the team leader, sadly! My boss gave me lot of support and expectation as well. I did a pretty good job before and I am very optimism to our future. But as a team, if my team does not work hard, we will be doomed to failure no matter how hard I work and push. In order to revitalize his passion, I tried couple of ways like talking to him about my concern and my boss's angry. I offered his new task which is quite new to him. I even persuaded my boss to give him new incentive package. But all of them knocked wall. His reaction was just he did not care. Even worse he did not want to talk about his situation. I want to be hard on him, but since we are friends and coworkers, I really can not see it will work. Even it works, I can not so quickly change my self from friend and coworker into manager. As a novice in management, I am really overwhelmed! I do not want get him fired, we are friends and I do not see him fired as my team number. What can I do? Thank you guys!

  • Value Comparison with a multivalued column in SQL Database Table

    Hi All, Suppose there is a table A which has a column AccessRights which is multivalued( Eg of values in it in this format STOLI,HELP,BRANCH(comma separated string) Now a stored procedure is written against this table to fetch records based on a AccessRight parameter sent to the SP. Let that parameter be @AccessRights, this is also a comma separated string which may have a value like STOLI,BRANCH,HELPLINE etc Now I want to compare individual values from the parameter @AccessRights with the column AccessRights. Current Approach is I split the Comma Separated string(@AccessRights) using a User Defined Function Split. And I get Individual values in a Table variable(Contains only one column "accessGroup"), the individual values are in a Table variable under the column name accessGroup and I use following code in the SP for comparison Where AccessRights like '%'+accessGroup+'%' Now if the user passes the parameter (HELP, OLI) instead of( HELP,STOLI) the SP will give the output. What should be done for comparison so that that subststring OLI does not give the output for STOLI

    I understand that the new ‘dynamic’ keyword in C# 4.0 facilitates interaction with dynamic .NET languages, and can help to cut code by using it instead of reflection. So usage is for very specific situations. However, what I would like to know is if it will give C# all the dynamic benefits that one would get in other dynamic languages such is the IronXXX languages? In other words, will it be possible to write a entire application in C# in a dynamic language style? And if it is possible, would it be recommended or not. And why, or why not respectively? Will I get all the benefits of a dynamic language without switching to another language?

  • WCF - remote service without using IIS - base address?

    I'm trying to get my head around the addressing of WCF services. We have a client-server setup where the server occasionally (maybe once a day) needs to push data to each client. I want to have a lightweight WCF listener service on each client hosted in an NT service to receive that data. We already have such an NT service setup hosting some local WCF services for other tasks so the overhead of this is minimal. Because of existing legacy code on the server I believe the service needs to be exposed as ASMX and use basicHttpBinding to allow it to connect. Each client is registered on the server by the user (they need to configure them individually) so discovery is not the issue. My question is, how does the addressing work? I imagine the user entering the client's address on the server in the form http://0.0.0.0/MyService or even http://hostname/MyService If so, how do I configure the client service in its App.config? Do I use localhost? If not then what is the reccommended way of exposing the service to the server? Note: I don't want to host in IIS as that adds extra requirements to the hardware required for the client. The clients will be almost certainly located on LANs, not over the public internet

  • Setting the Timezone with an automated script

    I'm writing scripts to automate setting up new slicehost installations. In a perfect world, after I started the script, it would just run, with no attention from me. I have succeeded, with one exception. How do I set the timezone, in a permanent (survive reboot) and sane (adjust for standard and daylight savings time, so no just forcing the date) ... manner that doesn't require input from me? Currently, I'm using dpkg-reconfigure tzdata This doesn't seem to have any way to force parameters into it. It demands user input. EDIT: I'm editing here, rather than commenting, since comments don't seem to allow code blocks. Here's the actual code I ended up with, based on Rudedog's comment below. I also noticed that this doesn't update /etc/timezone. I'm not certain who uses that, but in case anybody does, I'm setting that too.   • Destructor - does it get called if the app crashes

    Does a destructor get called if the app crashes? If it's an unhandled exception I'm guessing it does, but what about more serious errors, or something like a user killing the application process? And a few more potentially dumb questions: what happens to all the objects in an app when the app exits and all finalizers have been executed - do the objects get garbage collected or are they somehow all "unloaded" with the process or appdomain? is the garbage collector part of each application (runs in the same process) or is it independent?

  • What is an Ontology (Database?) ?

    I was just reading this article and it mentions that some organization had an Ontology as(?) their database(?) layer, and that the decision to do this was bad. Problem is I hadn't heard about this before, so I can't understand why it's bad. So I tried googling about databases and ontology, and came about quite a few pdfs from 2006 that we're full of incomprehensible content (for my mind). I read a few of these and at this point still have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. My current impression is that it was some crazy fad of 2006 that some academics were trying to sell us, but failed miserably due to the wording of their ideas. But I'm still curious if anyone actually knows what this is actually all about.

    It's become apparent to me that in Software Development it's not uncommon to have more than 1 monitor. We've been pushing for multiple monitors here (currently I have 1 19") but it's difficult to get the point across to the 'deciders' that there would be a benefit. They're only concerned with saving cents. So I thought I'd ask around and see what software developers with multiple monitors thought? What are the benefits? What are the costs?   • Issues with cross-domain uploading

    I'm using a django plugin called django-filebrowser which utilizes uploadify. The issue I'm having is that I'm hosting uploadify.swf on a remote static media server, whereas my admin area is on my django server. At first, the browse button wouldn't invoke my browser's upload. I fixed this by modifying the sameScriptAccess to always instead of sameDomain. Now the progress bar doesn't move at all, I probably have to enable some server setting for cross domain file uploading, or most likely actually host a separate upload script on my media server.   • sharp architecture question - no strongly typed views

    Hi, I am trying to get my head around the sharp architecture and used the visual studio template as described on the web: http://wiki.sharparchitecture.net/VSTemplatesAndCodeGen.ashx This is all cool. Unfortunately, I cannot add a strongly typed view as easily as I am used to ‘under’ asp.net mvc. What can I do to ‘enable’ this in VS 2008 Prof?
