• Fans running very fast on MacBook Pro 8.1

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on Macbook Pro 8.1 and one of the first things I noticed was that the fans were starting to spin very fast every few minutes for 10-30 sec and then going back to normal. That was happening even without any processor load, when completely idle. The fans were usually spinning at 4000 RPM and made much noise. The computer was not getting hotter than usual. When running OSX Lion there was no noise at all, fans almost all the time at 2000 RPM. I spent some time on it and found out that Precise uses a deamon to control the temperature, called macfanctld. You can use /etc/macfanctld.conf to set the configuration. I found out that the high fan speed is not due to the fact that the temperature is getting hot, but because there are two sensors which indicate wrong numbers (you can check that using 'sensors' command ): TW0P: +129.0°C TCTD: +256.0°C TCFC: +0.0°C TMBS: +0.0°C or setting the macfanctld log level to 2: Speed: 4992, *AVG: 56.9C, TC0P: 50.2C, TG0P: 51.5C, Sensors: TB0T:34 TB1T:34 TB2T:33 TC0C:58 TC0D:56 TC0E:59 TC0F:60 TC0P:50 TC1C:58 TC2C:58 TC3C:58 TC4C:57 TCFC:0 TCGC:57 TCSA:53 TCTD:256 TG0D:52 TG0P:52 THSP:42 TM0S:64 TMBS:0 TP0P:54 TPCD:60 TW0P:129 Th1H:51 Th2H:48 Tm0P:40 Ts0P:32 Ts0S:43 Moreover, TCTD was randomly jumping from temperatures of 0 to 256, so this may be the reason for unjustified random fan speeds. macfanctld is taking an average of the sensors including the values above, so the actual AVG temp used to control the fans is wrong, usually biased up, hence high RPM and noise. The workaround solution is to use an option in the macfanctld.conf which allows to ignore the malfunctioning sensors: exclude: 13 16 21 24 After reboot the reported temperatures are usually normal and the fans are working at reasonable speeds. I tested the response of the fans to heavy processor load by asking MATLAB to invert 10000x10000 matrix and the AVG temperature jumped to 63deg, and the fan to max 6200 RPM and then got it back to normal temperature. So I think it is safe so far. There is a expired bug about the failing sensor readings: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/955538 which may be good to open again. My question would be: does anyone know what the failing sensors do and if there is any danger in excluding them? Maybe some better solution to this problem?

• Can I benefit from links to pages on my site which have a `noindex` meta tag?

  I'm trying to understand if/how I can benefit from people linking to pages on my site which are with pages that have a noindex meta tag. 2 actions I'm considering to perform: Remove the robots.txt disallow to these pages, to make sure inner links get the propagated link juice. Adding a canonical tag to the most similar page that doesn't have a noindex meta tag Are these valid approaches that might help? Any others I should consider?

• Upgraded to new Google Admob, now cannot resubmit Google Adsense application

  I tried to apply for a google adsense account some time ago, but it was rejected due to some policy issues. Then I started using Legacy Admob account for the same email id. It was working fine. But now Google has deprecated the Legacy Admob so I upgraded to the new Google Admob. But now I want to resubmit my application for Adsense but whenever I go to the link https://www.google.com/adsense/ it takes to my homepage, where it shows older message that My account was not approved. It does not show the option to resubmit the application. Second way it shows to go to My Ads tab and then Under “Add AdSense for content", click Apply now. Complete the AdSense application form, then click Submit my application." But I cannot see Submit My Application or Add Adsense for content option in my My Ads Tab. Please can anybody tell me what should I do? Thanks.

• Wha is an acceptable level of FPS in browser workslow editor?

We all know such levels for action games (which is 60fps minimum), 25fps for videostreaming. Can anyone give me some information reagarding minimal FPS level for drawing web apps? What tools would you recomend to test my app?

• Redirect from domain to other one

  I deal with the following problem. I am customer of one domain reseller, which has fair prices, fine administration, and I have all my domains registered by it. Recently I've created a new webpage using a free web service (those sites where you can create a simple webpages with some template after few clicks). This new web page has default address in the following form: "pagename.provider.cz", but I want to use my own domain "pagename.cz". And that is the problem, because the provider would assign domain name to my presentation only if I registered mentioned domain by him. That wouldn't be a problem, but he is three times more expensive then my favorite one. So I am thinking about registering domain "pagename.cz" under my favorite registrator and then making 301 PHP redirect from it to "pagename.provider.cz". Shall this affect (negatively) my domain ranking? Are there any catches which I shoud care about?

• How to run WordPress and Java web app running on Tomcat on the same server?

  I have to run a WordPress site served via Apache2 & Java-based webapp using Tomcat on the same server. When users come to example.com or example.com/public-pages they need to served from WordPress but when they come to example.com/private-pages they need to be served from the Tomcat. I have asked this question on serverfault where they suggested using different port, different IP & sub-domain. I want to go for different port solution since it will mean I need to buy only one SSL certificate. I tried doing the reverse proxy method by having the following in my default-ssl.conf <VirtualHost _default_:443> ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost ServerName localhost:443 DocumentRoot /var/www <Directory /var/www> #For Wordpress Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride All </Directory> <Proxy *> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Proxy> ProxyRequests Off ProxyPass /private-pages ajp://localhost:8009/ ProxyPassReverse /private-pages ajp://localhost:8009/ SSLEngine on SSLProxyEngine On SSLCertificateFile /etc/apache2/ssl/apache.crt SSLCertificateKeyFile /etc/apache2/ssl/apache.key </VirtualHost> As you have noticed I am using mod_proxy_ajp in Apache2 for this. And that my Tomcat is listening to port 8009 and then serving content. So now when I go to example.com/private-pages I am seeing the content from my Tomcat. But 2 issues are happening. All my static resources are getting 404-ed, so none of my images, CSS, js are getting loaded. I see that the browser is requesting for the resources using URL example.com/css/* This will clearly not work because it translates to example.com:80/css/* instead of example.com:8009/css/* & there are no such resources in the WordPress directory. If I go to example.com/private-pages/abcd I am somehow kicked to the WordPress site (which obviously displays a 404 page). I can understand why #1 is happening but have no clue why the #2 is happening. Regardless, if there is another clean solution for resolving this, I would appreciate y'alls help.

• Should I register the domain name that has not popular top level domain name

  Lets say for example you want to register domain name assembly.com or assembly.net and find out that they are already registered(not available). Would you go with the domain name assemb.ly in such case? By having .ly the domain name represent word assembly but I think .ly domain is not so friendly for search engines? What do you think? Do you see any advantage of asemb.ly over assembly.com or assembly.net except it is shorter?

• How to Program AWS Spot Instances to Strategically Bid So the Auction is Never Lost Until a Competitor Beats the Maximum I'm Willing to Pay?

  I believe I'm in the right section of stack exchange to ask this. If not, let me know. I only use Amazon Web Services for temporary type hosting services, so the spot instances are quite valuable to me. I would also just make an instance and start and stop it - but - that doesn't necessarily fit my bootstrapped budget sadly. Anyways, it really kills me when someone outbids me on a spot instance I have (I tend to go for the larger ones which there are fewer of available) and I get randomly kicked off. I know or at least I believe there is a way to program in something somehow to dynamically change your bidding price to beat a potential competitor's if their's is higher than yours. Now, I previously believed Amazon would just charge me for the highest price right above the next lowest competitor automatically (eliminating the need for this) - so if I bid too high, then I only pay what I would of needed to in order to win and keep the auction. Essentially, I thought my bid price was my max bid price. Apparently, according to my bills and several experiments I've done - this is not the case. They charge me for whatever I bid even when I know there is no one else around to counter bid me. I needed to clarify that, but let me get back to the main point: Let's say I'm bidding $0.50, competitor comes in and bids 0.55 cents. I get kicked off. I want to have it to where I'd set a maximum I'm willing to pay (let's say $1.00 here), and then when competitor comes in and tries to bid $.55, my bid is dynamically adjusted to beat his at $0.56 up until he breaks my $1.00 threshold. I've been reading the guides and although they are more or less straightforward, I feel like they leave a few holes in them that end up confusing me. Like, for instance, where do I input said command or when do I do it? Maybe I'm just tech illiterate and need help deciphering these guides. • Multiple weapons for android game

  I am trying to make a 3D game for android using the Rajawali engine to render the 3D graphics and blender for designing my models(exporting as .md2), and I want my character to be able to change weapons, armor, helm, etc. Rendering every possible animation would be too much: if I had 10 different weapons, 10 armor and 10 helm, I would have to create 1000 animations with every possible equipment and if I add boots to list it would be even worse. I read somewhere you can use bones for this; but in Android, I only get the object itself to work with. Does anyone has an idea how i can solve this? If I make the weapon a different object how do I parent it to my models in my game?

• How can i get almost pixel perfect collision detection in a multiplayer game?

  I'm currently working on a multiplayer game for iPhone. The problem i have, as with all multiplayer games, is that the other user will always see everything at a non-constant delay. The game I'm making need to have a almost pixel perfect collision detection, but 1 or 2 pixels off is not that big of a deal. How can I possibly get this working? I guess I could just set local player to also be at X ms delay. However this will probably just be worse and feel sloppy when the user input. I know this problem is probably something network programmers deal with everyday and I would be glad if someone could give me a possible solution for this.

• How to implement a simple bullet trajectory

  I searched and searched and although it's a fair simple question, I don't find the proper answer but general ideas (which I already have). I have a top-down game and I want to implement a gun which shoots bullets that follow a simple path (no physics nor change of trajectory, just go from A to B thing). a: vector of the position of the gun/player. b: vector of the mouse position (cross-hair). w: the vector of the bullet's trajectory. So, w=b-a. And the position of the bullet = [x=x0+speed*time*normalized w.x , y=y0+speed*time * normalized w.y]. Also, is it possible that Gdx.input.getX() gives me non-precise position? Because when I draw the cross-hair it also draws off the cursor position. To my understanding, both describe the parts of a program in which a variable/object/method/function will be accessible. Are there other differences? • Java Out of memory - Out of heap size

  I downloaded the sample program , for file transfer between the client and server. When I try running the program with 1 GB file , I get the Exception in thread "main" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space at Client.main(Client.java:31). • calling and killing a parent function with onmouseover and onmouseout events

  I want to call the function upon the onmouseover="ParentFunction();" then kill it onmouseout="killParent();". Note: in my code the parent function is called initiate(); and the killer function is called reset(); which lies outside the parent function at the bottom of the script. • A MongoDB find() that matches when all $and conditions match the same sub-document?

  If I have a set of MongoDB documents like the following, what can I do to get a find() result that only returns the families who have 2 pets who all like liver? Here is what I expected to work: db.delegation.find({pets:2, $and: [{'foods.liver': true}, {'foods.allLike': true}] }) Here is the document collection: { "_id" : ObjectId("5384888e380efca06276cf5e"), "family": "smiths", "pets": 2, "foods" : [ { "name" : "chicken", "allLike" : true, }, { "name" : "liver", "allLike" : false, } ] }, { "_id" : ObjectId("4384888e380efca06276cf50"), "family": "jones", "pets": 2, "foods" : [ { "name" : "chicken", "allLike" : true, }, { "name" : "liver", "allLike" : true, } ] } What I end up getting is both families because they both have at least one food marked as true for allLike. It seems that the two conditions in the $and are true if any foods sub-document matches, but what I want is the two conditions to match for the conditions as a pair. As is, I get the Jones family back (as I want) but also Smith (which I don't). Smith gets returned because the chicken sub-doc has allLike set to true and the liver sub-doc has a name of 'liver'. The conditions are matching across separate foods sub-docs. I want them to match as a pair on a foods document. This code is not the real use case, obviously. I have one, but I've simplified it to protect the innocent...

• C headers: compiler specific vs library specific?

  Is there some clear-cut distinction between standard C *.h header files that are provided by the C compiler, as oppossed to those which are provided by a standard C library? Is there some list, or some standard locations? Motivation: int this answer I got a while ago, regarding a missing unistd.h in the latest TinyC compiler, the author argued that unistd.h (contrarily to sys/unistd.h) should not be provided by the compiler but by your C library. I could not make much sense of that response (for one thing shouldn't that also apply to, say, stdio.h?) but I'm still wondering about it. Is that correct? Where is some authoritative reference for this? Looking in other compilers, I see that other "self contained" POSIX C compilers that are hosted in Windows (like the GCC toolchain that comes with MinGW, in several incarnations; or Digital Mars compiler), include all header files. And in a standard Linux distribution (say, Centos 5.10) I see that the gcc package provides a few header files (eg, stdbool.h, syslimits.h) in /usr/lib/gcc/i386-redhat-linux/4.1.1/include/, and the glibc-headers package provides the majority of the headers in /usr/include/ (including stdio.h, /usr/include/unistd.h and /usr/include/sys/unistd.h). So, in neither case I see support for the above claim.

• Powershell 4 compatibility with Windows 2008 r2

  In my environment I have a single server that has access to pretty much my entire network. That server is running Windows 2008 r2, and I have upgraded Powershell to version 4.0. The question I have is this... Can I run cmdlets from that machine on other machines that are version 4 specific? For instance, when I am using Powershell, even though it is version 4, it doesn't give me an intellisense autocomplete for "Get-Volume" like it would on a 2012 r2 machine. I understand that it won't run on that machine because the infrastructure won't allow for it, but what about a 2012 r2 machine remotely? I am looking to run batch scripts from there for various purposes.

• Neglect empty cells while refreshing

  I have an excel macro which refreshes the worksheet. However, if the file (in .csv format) with which the worksheet is being refreshed has empty cells, it's shifting the data from other columns and placing the data in wrong columns. However,if I manually refresh the sheet, it's working fine. I don't know how I can fix this. I just want my whole .csv file including empty cells to appear as it is in the worksheet. Any suggestions would be greatly helpful. The following is the Macro code.
