  • Shortcut To Full Screen App In Lion

    - by omghai2u
I postponed getting OSX Lion for as long as I possibly could. Now that I have it, I'm having lots of difficulties getting it to perform how I want. On Snow Leopard my typical setup for working was 4 spaces. I'd keep a Windows VM open on Space #4 full-screened, a Linux open on space #3, and I'd do other stuff on spaces #1 and #2. My keyboard shortcut allowed me to switch between my Windows work (Command + 4) to my Linux work (Command + 3) very quickly, and without the need for my hands to leave the keyboard (or effectively to even quit typing). Productivity was good. I see that on Lion a full-screened VM (and yes, they need to be full screened, Fusion's Unity won't cut it for what I need to do) is its own separate Desktop. I have set up 4 desktops and made my keyboard shortcuts to move between them Command + # just as before. But how do I get my full-screened VM to be one of those already existing desktops? Or, rather, how do I make a short-cut for the full-screened app?

  • Netgear WNDR3700 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi are segregated

    - by Tim Sullivan
I have a Netgear WNDR3700 with both the 2.4GHz (B/G/N) and 5GHz (A/N) broadcasting. I'd assumed that devices connecting on either channel would work together without issues, but there are some devices (such as my iPhone 4 or HP wireless printer) that will only connect at 2.4GHz, and some that connect at 5GHz. However, it seems that they're segregated on the network, so a computer at 5GHz can't print to the printer, but the iPhone can. This is causing issues not just with printing, but with AppleTV and so on. Is there a way to have the router let these devices all talk to each other?

  • Is it possible to change the look and feel of remote X applications running under Xming?

    - by Rasive
I am running Eclipse remotely right now, in Xming on my Windows pc, through an ssh tunnel from my laptop running Ubuntu 11.10. As seen below, it doesn't look that bad, but it seems that my applications defaults to the standard theme when it cannot find any others for GTK+ applications. Is there anything I can do about this? Also it would be nice if I could do something about the font settings to make it more easily readable.

  • Why does Windows 7 have three system partitions?

    - by Ben
I am using Windows 7, and I wanted to make a System image (using Windows 7), but Windows 7 checked three partitions as System (100 MB + C (install partition) + D (my partition for my files, all programs are installed at C)). I don't want to backup my D partition, but that is not really the point. I don't want Windows messing with my other partitions and making them system. Is there a way to limit Windows 7 just to partition C (install partition)? If there is no way to stop Windows from making other partitions system, can I at least delete the files that make partition D system? PS: All these three partitions are on one physical disk, partitions from other disks aren't treated as System. FACTS: desktop PC, no OEM partitions, I personally have installed Windows 7 (many times) on the C partition. Why is my D partition checked as System partition when I try to create a System Image (using Windows 7 Ultimate built in tool), even though Windows (and all the software) are installed on the C partition? Is there a way to make D "normal" or non-system partition? Here is a picture of how it looks like if I try to create a system image. Once again, why is D also a system partition?

  • Convert a cassette tape recording to digital format

    - by Electric Automation
Has anyone been successful with transferring audio cassette tape recordings to a digital format? I would like to preserve old cassette tape recordings of my grandparents to some digital format: MP3, WAV, etc... The quality of the tapes are mediocre. I think I can handle the quality restoration but getting the audio from tape to digital is my question. Below is a list of the hardware that I can work with: Cassette Deck: I have a Technics stereo cassette deck model RS-B12. It has separate left and right IN and OUT RCA type jacks on the back. In the front it has a headphone phono jack, plus left and right mic input phono jacks. On the computer side: -I have a Windows Vista PC with no additional software other than what came with the machine from Costco. No sound editing software that I can see. There is no sound card on the PC. On the front panel there is a mini-phono mic input jack and there are several different types of in/out mini-phono jacks on the back. In addition, USB and Firewire. I also have access to a new (2009) iMac with a mini-phono input jack for a powered mic or other audio source and GarageBand that has come with the computer. In addition, USB and Firewire. What are my options for getting these cassette recordings into a digital format? Whats the best format? What sort of wires would I need and will I want to utilize the USB or Firewire or can I simply use the audio inputs on the PC (or Mac) to receive the audio stream?

  • SQL SERVER – FIX ERROR – Cannot connect to . Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452)

    - by pinaldave
Just a day ago, I was doing small attempting to connect to my local SQL Server using IP 127.0.0.1. The IP is of my local machine and SQL Server is installed on the local box as well. However, whenever I try to connect to the server it gave me following strange error. Cannot connect to 127.0.0.1. Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452) The reason was indeed strange as I was trying to connect from local box to local box and it said my login was from an untrusted domain. As my system is not part of any domain, this was really confusing to me. Another thing was that I have been always able to connect always using 127.0.0.1 to SQL Server and this was a bit strange to me. I started to think what did I change since it  last time I connected to SQL Server. Suddenly I remembered that I had modified my computer’s host file for some other purpose. Solution: I opened my host file and immediately added entry like 127.0.0.1 localhost. Once I added it I was able to reconnect to SQL Server as usual. The location of the host file is C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. You will find file with the name hosts in it, make sure to open it with notepad. If you are part of a domain and your organization is using active directory, make sure that your account is added properly to active directory as well have proper security permissions to execute the task. • The Evolution of Oracle Direct EMEA by John McGann

    - by user769227
John is expanding his Dublin based team and is currently recruiting a Director with marketing and sales leadership experience: http://bit.ly/O8PyDF Should you wish to apply, please send your CV to [email protected] Hi, my name is John McGann and I am part of the Oracle Direct management team, based in Dublin.   Today I’m writing from the Oracle London City office, right in the heart of the financial district and up to very recently at the centre of a fantastic Olympic Games. The Olympics saw individuals and teams from across the globe competing to decide who is Citius, Altius, Fortius - “Faster, Higher, Stronger" There are lots of obvious parallels between the competitive world of the Olympics and the Business environments that many of us operate in, but there are also some interesting differences – especially in my area of responsibility within Oracle. We are of course constantly striving to be the best - the best solution on offer for our clients, bringing simplicity to their management, consumption and application of information technology, and the best provider when compared with our many niche competitors.   In Oracle and especially in Oracle Direct, a key aspect of how we achieve this is what sets us apart from the Olympians.  We have long ago eliminated geographic boundaries as a limitation to what we can achieve. We assemble the strongest individuals across multiple countries and bring them together in teams focussed on a single goal. One such team is the Oracle Direct Sales Programs team. In case you don’t know, Oracle Direct EMEA (Europe Middle East and Africa) is the inside sales division in Oracle and it is where I started my Oracle career.  I remember that my first role involved putting direct mail in envelopes.... things have moved on a bit since then – for me, for Oracle Direct and in how we interact with our customers. Today, the team of over 1000 people is located in the different Oracle Direct offices around Europe – the main ones are Malaga, Berlin, Prague and Dubai plus the headquarters in Dublin. We work in over 20 languages and are in constant contact with current and future Oracle customers, using the latest internet and telephone technologies to effectively communicate and collaborate with each other, our customers and prospects. One of my areas of responsibility within Oracle Direct is the Sales Programs team. This team of 25 people manages the planning and execution of demand generation, leading the process of finding new and incremental revenue within Oracle Direct. The Sales Programs Managers or ‘SPMs’ are embedded within each of the Oracle Direct sales teams, focussed on distinct geographies or product groups. The SPMs are virtual members of the regional sales management teams, and work closely with the sales and marketing teams to define and deliver demand generation activities. The customer contact elements of these activities are executed via the Oracle Direct Sales and Business Development/Lead Generation teams, to deliver the pipeline required to meet our revenue goals. Activities can range from pan-EMEA joint sales and marketing campaigns, to very localised niche campaigns. The campaigns might focus on particular segments of our existing customers, introducing elements of our evolving solution portfolio which customers may not be familiar with. The Sales Programs team also manages ‘Nurture’ activities to ensure that we develop potential business opportunities with contacts and organisations that do not have immediate requirements. Looking ahead, it is really important that we continue to evolve our ability to add value to our clients and reduce the physical limitations of our distance from them through the innovative application of technology. This enables us to enhance the customer buying experience and to enable the Inside Sales teams to manage ever more complex sales cycles from start to finish.  One of my expectations of my team is to actively drive innovation in how we leverage data to better understand our customers, and exploit emerging technologies to better communicate with them.   With the rate of innovation and acquisition within Oracle, we need to ensure that existing and potential customers are aware of all we have to offer that relates to their business goals.   We need to achieve this via a coherent communication and sales strategy to effectively target the right people using the most effective medium. This is another area where the Sales Programs team plays a key role.

  • The English Beat's Dave Wakeling Gets Philosophical

    - by Oracle OpenWorld Blog Team
by Karen Shamban We asked Oracle OpenWorld Music Festival performer Dave Wakeling of The English Beat to answer some of our burning questions about what it's like leading the life of a musician. Here are the questions ... and Dave's insightful answers.  Q. What do you like best about performing in front of a live audience?A. Being in the moment is the aim for all of life. Q. How do you use technology in creating and delivering your music?A.  We use it behind the art, not instead of it. Q. Do you prefer smaller, intimate venues or larger, louder ones?A. I enjoy 'em all, big and small. Q. What about your fans surprises you?A. Their diversity, decency, and open mindedness. Q. What about your live act surprises your fans?A. That we are as good or even better than they had heard! Q. There are going to be a lot of technical people (you could call them geeks) in the Oracle crowd - what are they going to love about your performance?A. Geeks all have an inner diva, sometimes suppressed until they start to dance at one of our shows! Q. What's new and different in the music you're making today, versus a year or two ago?A. No difference. Only connect, forget the rest! Q. Have you been on tour recently? If so, what do you like about touring, and what do you dislike?A. Touring Australia at the moment ... I love the 2 hours onstage and get bored by the rules and regulations of the other 22 hours. Q. Ever think about playing another kind of music? If so, what, and why?A. No, my music is only ever a reflection of my soul. Q. What are the top three things people should know about your music?A. Dance, think, then dance some more! Limbic is good for us! • Is 'Old-School' the Wrong Way to Describe Reliable Security?

    - by rickramsey
source The Hotel Toronto apparently knows how to secure its environment. "Built directly into the bedrock in 1913, the vault features an incredible 4-foot thick steel door that weighs 40 tonnes, yet can nonetheless be moved with a single finger. During construction, the gargantuan door was hauled up Yonge Street from the harbour by a team of 18 horses. " 1913. Those were the days. Sysadmins had to be strong as bulls and willing to shovel horse maneur. At least nowadays you don't have to be that strong. And, if you happen to be trying to secure your Oracle Linux environment, you may be able to avoid the shoveling, as well. • Resources on learning to program in machine code?

    - by AceofSpades
I'm a student, fresh into programming and loving it, from Java to C++ and down to C. I moved backwards to the barebones and thought to go further down to Assembly. But, to my surprise, a lot of people said it's not as fast as C and there is no use. They suggested learning either how to program a kernel or writing a C compiler. My dream is to learn to program in binary (machine code) or maybe program bare metal (program micro-controller physically) or write bios or boot loaders or something of that nature. The only possible thing I heard after so much research is that a hex editor is the closest thing to machine language I could find in this age and era. Are there other things I'm unaware of? Are there any resources to learn to program in machine code? Preferably on a 8-bit micro-controller/microprocessor. This question is similar to mine, but I'm interested in practical learning first and then understanding the theory.

  • Code review versus pair programming

    - by mericano1
I was wondering what is the general idea about code review and pair programming. I do have my own opinion but I'd like to hear from somebody else as well. Here are a few questions, please give me your opinion even on some of the point First of all are you aware of way to measure the effectiveness of this practices? Do you think that if you pair program, code reviews are not necessary or it's still good to have them both? Do you think anybody can do code review or maybe is better done by seniors only? In terms of productivity do you think it suffers from pairing all the times or you will eventually get in back in the long run?

  • xorg-edgers PPA with llvmpipe breaks AMD APU system

    - by linux_RRT
I've read before where this had happened to another user with the same system... I was running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with Kernel 3.2.0.29 and decided to give xorg-edgers a try. I purged fglrx* and xorg* before beginning. I upgraded with sudo apt-get upgrade -d The system downloaded and installed 109MB worth of data to the system, including llvmpipe which I am very unfamiliar with, and Kernel 3.5.0.11. The system was then rebooted to finalize the upgrade. The system boots to a black screen and then tells me "The system is running in low-graphics mode". Did I miss a step in the install? Or do the newest open-source drivers just not work with my hardware? I realize this hardware (APU) is some of the newer development. I dropped to command via the fallback menu and attempted to boot lightdm as root, but the system hangs in 'Configuring kernel parameters' at Starting initializes zram swaping. ...and then it just sits there. The other thing that concerns me is the output at the top of the screen that says: could not write bytes: Broken pipe Does llvmpipe work for this type of system? To be clear the system is: MSI x370-206us Laptop Radeon HD 6320 AMD e450 APU 1.67ghz dual-core Any help would be much appreciated. Like I said, I'm pretty sure I followed the right order of operations for the install procedure, but I was curious if anyone with similar hardware had experienced anything similar.

  • Post Deploy MAAS cleanup

    - by David Buttrick
I have a mostly working MAAS cluster. I'm still learning juju, but while I'm doing that, I wanted to take this opportunity to do some clean-up tasks. Here are my goals: Configure ntp on the nodes. Set the video mode on the nodes. Set the timezone on the nodes. Are these juju tasks? Or is this better attacked by mounting the disk image on the MAAS host, and doing the configuration there? If I do it that way, how do I get the nodes to recognize that they have to re-install the image to pickup my changes? Thank you. David

  • How do I change the software center icon in the launcher?

    - by Andreas
I'm not a big fan of the Software Center icon (apparently I'm not the only one: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/09/software-centre-icon-proposal). Is there a way change it? The answers to this related question doesn't make it clear whether there is: How to change the Dash icon in the Unity Launcher? As far as I can see the Software Center icon isn't in nautilus /usr/share/unity/5/ so where could it be?

  • Repairing or recreating a bootloader on a multi-booting EFI GPT system

    - by Emre
Reinstalling Ubuntu messed up my boot loader so I I tried to fix it with boot repair. It detected my OSX installation and asked about removing the "separate boot/EFI". It also said my partition was full despite the fact that it wasn't and asked me to remove stuff. I declined both and proceeded. It's been stuck at the "purge and reinstall the GRUB" stage for half an hour. Is this typical, bearing in mind I have a fast SSD and CPU? Is there a better way to re-install grub on a multi-booting UEFI system? Does my pastebin provide any insight?
