  • How important is W3C XHTML/CSS validation when finalizing work?

    Even though I always strive for complete validation these days, I often wonder if it's a waste of time. If the code runs and it looks the same in all browsers (I use browsershots.org to verify) then do I need to take it any further or am I just being overly anal? What level do you hold your code to when you create it for: a) yourself b) your clients P.S. Jeff and company, why doesn't stack overflow validate? :) EDIT: Some good insights, I think that since I've been so valid-obsessed for so long I program knowing what will cause problems and what won't so I'm in a better position than people who create a site first and then "go back and fix the validation problems" I think I may post another question on stack overflow; "Do you validate as you go or do you finish and then go back and validate?" as that seems to be where this question is going

  • PHP Based session variable not retaining value. Works on localhost, but not on server.

    I've been trying to debug this problem for many hours, but to no avail. I've been using PHP for many years, and got back into it after long hiatus, so I'm still a bit rusty. Anyways, my $_SESSION vars are not retaining their value for some reason that I can't figure out. The site worked on localhost perfectly, but uploading it to the server seemed to break it. First thing I checked was the PHP.ini server settings. Everything seems fine. In fact, my login system is session based and it works perfectly. So now that I know $_SESSIONS are working properly and retaining their value for my login, I'm presuming the server is setup and the problem is in my script. Here's a stripped version of the code that's causing a problem. $type, $order and $style are not being retained after they are set via a GET variable. The user clicks a link, which sets a variable via GET, and this variable is retained for the remainder of their session.   • SQL Server Process Queue Race Condition

    I have an order queue that is accessed by multiple order processors through a stored procedure. Each processor passes in a unique ID which is used to lock the next 20 orders for its own use. The stored procedure then returns these records to the order processor to be acted upon. There are cases where multiple processors are able to retrieve the same 'OrderTable' record at which point they try to simultaneously operate on it. This ultimately results in errors being thrown later in the process. My next course of action is to allow each processor grab all available orders and just round robin the processors but I was hoping to simply make this section of code thread safe and allow the processors to grab records whenever they like. So Explicitly - Any idea why I am experiencing this race condition and how I can solve the problem. Is there any better solution available?

  • confluence experiences?

    We're considering moving from trac to Atlassian Confluence as our knowledge base solution. ("We" are a growing IT consulting company, so most users are somewhat technical.) There are many reasons we're looking for an alternative to trac: ACL, better wiki refactoring tools (Move/rename, Delete (retaining history), What links here, Attachments [change tracking], easier way to track changes (i.e. better "timeline" interface), etc.), "templates"/"macros", WYSIWYG/Word integration. Confluence looks to be very nice from the feature list POV. But toying with it for a little I had the impression that its interface may seem somewhat confusing to the new users (and I recently saw a comment to that effect on SO). I hope that can be fixed by installing/creating a simpler skin, though. If you've used Confluence, what are your thoughts on it? Do you agree it's not as easy to use as other software, can anything be done about it? What are its other shortcomings? Would you choose a different wiki if you had another chance?   • UISplitViewController in a TabBar?

    Hi all, I am in kind of situation that I need to start with a tab based application and in that I need a split view for one or more tabs. But it seems that split view controller object can not be added to the tabbarController. (Although tabbar object can be added to the splitviewcontroller). The problem can be seen otherways: I have a full screen in the left part I have a table view when any row is selected in the table a popover should come out pointing that row. I think I am clear in what I explained. So guys any ideas or work arounds? Please let me know if I am not clear in my question. Thanks, Madhup

  • Accidentally created a virus?

    I've seen it happen reasonabley often: I write an application in Delphi and when I compile it, the virus-scanner tells me that I've created a virus and thus immediately deletes the executable again. It's annoying but reasonable easy to fix by doing a full rebuild, deleting the *.dcu files first and sometimes by simply waiting. It happens with Delphi 6, 7, 2005 and 2007, as far as I know. And Symantec, Kaspersky, McAfee and NOD32 have all been guilty of reporting these false positives. I know it's because Delphi adds timestamps to its DCU files and these timestamps end up in the final executable and apparently appear to be part of some random virus signature. I don't want to disable the virus-scanner, not even for a single folder or file. And I'm not really for a solution, but am wondering about the following: Do these false positives also occur with other compilers? Does it also happen with .NET executables? Do others also notice similar problems with Delphi?

  • How useful is a 'pure' MVC implementation?

    I work at a company that provides custom made 'CRM'-like software. We are currently redesigning/redeveloping the software with the hopes that it will look more modern and be easier to develop and customize for future clients. Currently it takes a long time to customize each new application. There is a presumption that the reason it takes so long is because of the amount of business logic that is present in the 'view' layer. To some extent I can vouch for this being true, but symptoms don't always reliably point out a cause. There was a suggestion that if we just move the business logic to the controller layer and use pure view (we use java J2EE and struts) as in implementing struts tags instead of calling the bean layer and iterating objects right on the jsp - etc etc. Before I start advocating we go forward with this, I wanted to get a feeling for what other people thought. Does a "pure" implementation of the MVC (especially emphasis on decoupling the controller and the view) provide a cleaner, easier to develop and change code base?

  • Uploadify Flash Uploader and Random UPLOAD_ERR_CANT_WRITE errors

    I am using Uploadify to provide progress bar support for file uploads on a PHP app I built. It works perfectly for a few uploads,then every few uploads it fails and the data from the $_FILES array reveals an UPLOAD_ERR_CANT_WRITE error. (Error code 7). I ran Paros proxy between my browser and the server to see the difference between a passing and failing request. The only difference was the content separator for the multi-part post which changes every time. I would conclude this was fully a server error, except with a plain jane form, I cannot reproduce the error. I am not a server guy, so please let me know what information is needed to troubleshoot this and I will update the question with those details. I did place these lines in the .htaccess, but to know avail.   • How to format as FAT32 from Windows 7/Vista

    What is the best way to format a USB drive with FAT32 (for Mac compatibility) from within Windows 7/Vista? I ask because the Disk Management only lets you pick exFAT (because the disk is over 32GB I believe). Doing it from the command line with diskpart doesn't seem to work either.

    Hi, I have an application for which we use IzPack to create the installer. The installer is working fine in its current state, however, I need to add functionality that enables it to check whether an existing version of the software has been installed. I understand IzPack supports this out of the box using its CheckedHelloPanel, unfortunately that only works for Windows, as it appears to depend on the windows registry. Is there a way to configure IzPack such that it is able to detect existing installations? I need to be able to detect whether there is one and merely display a message notifying the user... Bonus points for how to give the user the option to trigger the uninstaller of the existing installation. Assume that the software will only be installed using the new installer IzPack only: please do not suggest alternatives, as we cannot change that now If you suggest using <validator>, please include a code sample of the validator class, because I have considered this, but don't know where to start
