  • How to line up columns using paste(1)? or how to make an aligned table merging lines in the shell?

    Hi, I want to merge lines such that the merged lines are aligned on the same boundary. UNIX paste(1) does this nicely when lines all meet at the same tab boundary, but when lines differ in size (in the file that lines are being merged into), the text comes out awkward. Example of paste(1) that has the desired effect: $ echo -e "a\nb\nccc\nd" | paste - - a b ccc d Example of paste(1) with undesired effect: $ echo -e "a\nb\ncccccccccccc\nd" | paste - - a b cccccccccccc d Note how the 2nd column doesn't line up. I want 'b' to line up with 'd', which requires an additional tab. Unfortunately I believe this is the limit for the paste utility, so if anyone has any idea of how to get the desired effect above, I'd love to hear it.

  • How to mask DLL in .NET ?

    Let's say I have a DLL that provides math calculus functions. To use it, I include the using Colhq.Math.Basic; namespace. How could I use it by adding a statement like using Blala.Functions.Math; ? So how could I use everything (methods, enums, etc.) from a DLL by using a different namespace ? Is there a one-shot way to wrap or mask a DLL ?

  • Volatile keyword

    Say I have two threads and an object. One thread assigns the object: public void assign(MyObject o) { myObject = o; } Another thread uses the object: public void use() { myObject.use(); } Does the variable myObject have to be declared as volatile? I am trying to understand when to use volatile and when not, and this is puzzling me. Is it possible that the second thread keeps a reference to an old object in its local memory cache? If not, why not? Thanks a lot.

    Hey guys, while surfing through the web and through stackoverflow.com i found many posts in forums, etc. where this message occures in IE but not in the other browsers. the thing is, the resolutions vary widely and it's not clear for me what's the best way to avoid this problem. I need to update this piece of code so that it will ignore any URLs that are already inside an tag.

    Okay, so I'm trying to set cookies using Ruby. I'm in a Rack environment. response[name]=value will add an HTTP header into the HTTP headers hash rack has. I know that it works.   • How to prevent ADO.NET from altering double values when it reads from Excel files

    I have the following rows in my Excel input file: Column1 Column2 0-5 3.040 6 2.957 7 2.876 and the following code which uses ADO.NET to read it: string fileName = "input.xls"; var connectionString = string.Format("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; data source={0}; Extended Properties=Excel 8.0;", fileName); var dbConnection = new OleDbConnection(connectionString); dbConnection.Open(); try { var dbCommand = new OleDbCommand("SELECT * FROM [Sheet1$]", dbConnection); var dbReader = dbCommand.ExecuteReader (); while (dbReader.Read()) { string col1 = dbReader.GetValue(0).ToString(); string col2 = dbReader.GetValue(1).ToString(); } } finally { dbConnection.Close(); } The results are very disturbing. Here's why: The values of each column in the first time through the loop: col1 is empty (blank) col2 is 3.04016411633586 Second time: col1 is 6 col2 is 2.95722928448829 Third time: col1 is 7 col2 is 2.8763272933077 The first problem happens with col1 in the first iteration. I expect 0-5. The second problem happens at every iteration with col2 where ADO.NET obviously alters the values as it reads them. How to stop this mal-behavior?

  • DOM manipulation

    Hello everyone, Im trying to use the DOM in PHP to do a pretty specific job and Ive got no luck so far, the objective is to take a string of HTML from a Wordpress blog post (from the DB, this is a wordpress plugin). And then out of that HTML replace <div id="do_not_edit">old content</div>" with <div id="do_not_edit">new content</div>" in its place. Saving anything above and below that div in its structure. Then save the HTML back into the DB, should be simple really, I have read that a regex wouldnt be the right way to go here so Ive turned to the DOM instead. The problem is I just cant get it to work, cant extract the div or anything. Help me!!   • Why wasn't C# designed with 'const' for variables and methods?

    I suspect const was simplified for the C# spec for general language simplicity. Was there a specific reason we can't declare variable references or methods as const like we can with C++? e.g.: const MyObject o = new MyObject(); // Want const cast referenece of MyObject o.SomeMethod(); // Theoretically legal because SomeMethod is const o.ChangeStuff(); // Theoretically illegal because ChangeStuff is not const class MyObject { public int val = 0; public void SomeMethod() const { // Do stuff, but can't mutate due to const declaration. } public void ChangeStuff() { // Code mutates this instance.   • Why is RSpec so slow under Rails?

    Whenever I run rspec tests for my Rails application it takes forever and a day of overhead before it actually starts running tests. Why is rspec so slow? Is there a way to speed up Rails' initial load or single out the part of my Rails app I need (e.g. ActiveRecord stuff only) so it doesn't load absolutely everything to run a few tests?

  • How to write a regular expression for "everything between X and Y" for use with preg_replace

    I want to take a variable called $encoded_str and and remove cd1, CD1 and anything between the first 'l' and the last blank space. So for example "lp6 id4 STRINGcd1" would return "STRING". I'm using PHP 4 for now so I can't use str_ireplace, I have this: $encoded_str=str_replace('CD1','',$encoded_str); $encoded_str=str_replace('cd1','',$encoded_str); $encoded_str=preg_replace('X','',$encoded_str); I've RTFM for preg_replace but am a bit confused. What should I replace the X with and can you suggest a decent introductory primer for writing regular expressions?

  • Java: Calculate distance between a large number of locations and performance

    I'm creating an application that will tell a user how far away a large number of points are from their current position. Each point has a longitude and latitude. I've read over this article http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/latlong.html and seen this post http://stackoverflow.com/questions/837872/calculate-distance-in-meters-when-you-know-longitude-and-latitude-in-java There are a number of calculations (50-200) that need carried about. If speed is more important than the accuracy of these calculations, which one is best?

  • ASP.NET - Missing #includes cause compilation errors: Failed to map the path '...'

    I have an ASP.NET application which features some server-side includes. For example: <!--#include virtual="/scripts.inc" --> These files are not present in my ASP.NET website project because my website starts in a virtual directory: /path-to-my-application When I choose Build Web Site, I get this error: Failed to map the path '/scripts.inc' Visual Studio cannot resolve these include files that are defined at the root directory level. They are not visible in the website project. Aside from manually commenting out the #include references, is there any way I can get the website to build? Can I force Visual Studio to ignore those errors and compile the site? Once the website is pushed out to IIS, there is no problem, because all the #include files are in place. NOTE - Web Controls are not an option for this application. Please assume #include files are a requirement. Also, I cannot move the include files since they are used by other applications.

  • Are there good reasons not to use an ORM?

    During my apprenticeship, I have used NHibernate for some smaller projects which I mostly coded and designed on my own. Now, before starting some bigger project, the discussion arose how to design data access and whether or not to use an ORM layer. As I am still in my apprenticeship and still consider myself a beginner in enterprise programming, I did not really try to push in my opinion, which is that using an object relational mapper to the database can ease development quite a lot. The other coders in the development team are much more experienced than me, so I think I will just do what they say. :-) However, I do not completely understand two of the main reasons for not using NHibernate or a similar project: One can just build one’s own data access objects with SQL queries and copy those queries out of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. Debugging an ORM can be hard. So, of course I could just build my data access layer with a lot of SELECTs etc, but here I miss the advantage of automatic joins, lazy-loading proxy classes and a lower maintenance effort if a table gets a new column or a column gets renamed. (Updating numerous SELECT, INSERT and UPDATE queries vs. updating the mapping config and possibly refactoring the business classes and DTOs.) Also, using NHibernate you can run into unforeseen problems if you do not know the framework very well. That could be, for example, trusting the Table.hbm.xml where you set a string’s length to be automatically validated. However, I can also imagine similar bugs in a “simple” SqlConnection query based data access layer. Finally, are those arguments mentioned above really a good reason not to utilise an ORM for a non-trivial database based enterprise application? Are there probably other arguments they/I might have missed? (I should probably add that I think this is like the first “big” .NET/C# based application which will require teamwork. Good practices, which are seen as pretty normal on Stack Overflow, such as unit testing or continuous integration, are non-existing here up to now.)

    Hi. I have a tabbed setup on the page and I want to automatically make corresponding menu tab highlighted as well as corresponding content div show depending on # hash. But content div does not change.   • Can redirection of screen output to file change the result of a C++ code?

    I am having this very weird behaviour with a C++ code: It gives me different results when running with and without redirecting the screen output to a file (reproducible in cygwin and linux). I mean, if I get the same executable and run it like ./run or run it like ./run >out.log, I get different results! I use std::cout to output to screen, all lines ending with endl; I use ifstream for the input file; I use ofstream for output, all lines ending with endl. I am using g++ 4. Any idea what is going on? UPDATE: I have hard-coded the input data, so 'ifstream' is not used, and problem persists. UPDATE 2: That's getting interesting. I have probed three variables that are computed initially, and that's what I get when using with and without redirecting the output to file redirected to file: 0 -0.02 0 direct to screen: 0 -0.02 1.04083e-17 So there's a round-off difference in the code variables with and without redirecting the output! Now, why redirecting would interefere with an internal computation of the code? UPDATE 3: If I redirect to /dev/null, I get the sam behaviour as outputing direct to screen, instead of redirecting to file.

    In our network, some users cannot connect to either Exchange Server 2007 or Outlook Web Access while others are able to connect to both. On one computer, the error occurred after the user ran the AVG anti-virus update. Some computers return this error message "Task 'Microsoft Exchange Server' reported error (0x800401 ID): The server is not available." Thanks, in advance, for your help!

  • Forcing the from address when postfix relays over smtp

    I'm trying to get email reports from our AWS EC2 instances. We're using Exchange Online (part of Microsoft Online Services). I've setup a user account specifically for SMTP relaying, and I've setup Postfix to meet all the requirements to relay messages through this server. However, Exchange Online's SMTP server will reject messages unless the From address exactly matches the authentication address (the error message is 550 5.7.1 Client does not have permissions to send as this sender). With careful configuration, I can setup my services to send as this user. But I'm not a huge fan of being careful - I'd rather have postfix force the issue. Is there a way to do this?

  • synchronous network audio

    I'd like to have an audio transmission shared among computers on a LAN. Although there are various systems to do this -- shoutcast/icecast, pulseaudio, etc. -- I'm not aware of any that provide synchronization. I'd like to have different computers in the house playing the same audio, and have the same sample playing at the same time. Is there a system which can do this?

  • How to install Windows 7 on Acer Aspire iDea 500?

    I've got a Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit from MSDN Subscriber Downloads. The downloaded ISO boots fine from both a USB pen drive and a DVD on other computers. On the Acer it doesn't boot. The Acer iDea 500 can boot, and install, Windows XP Mediacenter from a DVD with slipstreamed SATA drives on it. Also, all kinds of Linux distros works perfectly fine on the iDea 500. I wouldn't mind using Mythbuntu instead of Windows 7 Ultimate, but it doesn't work very well.

  • Fastest possible way to render 480 x 320 background as iPhone OpenGL ES textures

    I need to display 480 x 320 background image in OpenGL ES. The thing is I experienced a bit of a slow down in iPhone when I use 512 x 512 texture size. So I am finding an optimum case for rendering iPhone resolution size background in OpenGL ES. How should I slice the background in this case to obtain the best possible performance? My main concern is speed. Should I go for 256 x 256 or other texture sizes here?
