• How to find optimal path visit every node with parallel workers complicated by dynamic edge costs?

  Say you have an acyclic directed graph with weighted edges and create N workers. My goal is to calculate the optimal way those workers can traverse the entire graph in parralel. However, edge costs may change along the way. Example: A -1-> B A -2-> C B -3-> C (if A has already been visited) B -5-> C (if A has not already been visited) Does what I describe lend itself to a standard algorithmic approach, or alternately can someone suggest if I'm looking at this in an inherently flawed way (i have an intuition I might be)?

• Vocabulary: Should I call this apply or map?

  So, I'm tasked with organizing the code and building a library with all the common code among our products. One thing that seems to happen all the time and I wanted to abstract is posted below in pseudocode, and I don't know how to call it (different products have different domain specific implementations and names for it) list function idk_what_to_name_it ( list list_of_callbacks, value common_parameter ): list list_of_results = new list for_each(callback in list_of_callbacks) list_of_results.push(callback(common_parameter)) end for_each return list_of_results end function Would you call this specific construct a list ListOfCallbacks.Map( value value_to_map) method or would it better be value Value.apply(list list_of_callbacks) I'm really curious about this kind of thing. Is there a standard guide for this stuff?

• Why make the login page to a single page application a separate page?

  I am wondering why it seems to be popular to have the login page of a SPA be a separate page that is not page of the SPA (as in loaded and send data through ajax requests)? I only thing I can think of is security but I can't think a specific security reason. I mean the only thing that come to mind is that if your login page in part of the SPA, it sends the username/password through ajax which can be seen by such tools like firebug or web inspector however even if you send it as a normal POST request, there are other tools that can easily capture this data (like fiddler, httpscoop, etc...). Is there something I am missing?

• Contract / Project / Line-Item hierarchy design considerations

  We currently have an application that allows users to create a Contract. A contract can have 1 or more Project. A project can have 0 or more sub-projects (which can have their own sub-projects, and so on) as well as 1 or more Line. Lines can have any number of sub-lines (which can have their own sub-lines, and so on). Currently, our design contains circular references, and I'd like to get away from that. Currently, it looks a bit like this: public class Contract { public List<Project> Projects { get; set; } } public class Project { public Contract OwningContract { get; set; } public Project ParentProject { get; set; } public List<Project> SubProjects { get; set; } public List<Line> Lines { get; set; } } public class Line { public Project OwningProject { get; set; } public List ParentLine { get; set; } public List<Line> SubLines { get; set; } } We're using the M-V-VM "pattern" and use these Models (and their associated view models) to populate a large "edit" screen where users can modify their contracts and the properties on all of the objects. Where things start to get confusing for me is when we add, for example, a Cost property to the Line. The issue is reflecting at the highest level (the contract) changes made to the lowest level. Looking for some thoughts as to how to change this design to remove the circular references. One thought I had was that the contract would have a Dictionary<Guid, Project> which would contain ALL projects (regardless of their level in hierarchy). The Project would then have a Guid property called "Parent" which could be used to search the contract's dictionary for the parent object. THe same logic could be applied at the Line level. Thanks! Tunneling refers to any abuse of HTTP that masks or misrepresents a message’s intent and undermines the protocol’s transparency. A REST API must not compromise its design by misusing HTTP’s request methods in an effort to accommodate clients with limited HTTP vocabulary. Always make proper use of the HTTP methods as specified by the rules in this section. [highlights by me] But then a lot of frameworks use tunneling to expose REST interfaces via HTML forms, since <form> knows only about GET and POST. My most recent example is a MethodRewriteMiddleware for flask (submitted by the author of the framework): http://flask.pocoo.org/snippets/38/. Any ways to comply to the "Rule" without hacks or add-ons in web frameworks?

• To use Dart, the Java programmer has to work with 2 languages? [closed]

  When deciding on a technology to use for web apps, it's become a difficult choice between GWT and Dart and I am looking for guidance in deciding. GWT is a java programmer's dream because they don't have to learn a new language or have to worry about a separate IDE or extra plugin etc. GWT was sold using this value proposition - one didn't need to program in Javascript. But are Google making a U-turn and saying "go through the hassle of learning a new language" afterall? Or is it intended for there to be a Java to Dart compiler so that Java developers do not have to learn a new language? (this is not a rant, so I don't know why you are down-voting the question) Note: "the syntax is very similar" is not a justification. You could say why bother with GWT and just work with Java + Javascript directly.

• Approach for developing software that will need to be ported to multiple mobile platforms in the future

  I am currently doing the preliminary design for a new product my company will be pushing out soon. We will start on Android, but then we will need to quickly develop the IPhone, IPad.... and then the Windows 8 ports of the application. Basically the only code that wouldn't be reusable is the view specific code and the multimedia functions. This will be an SIP client (of course the user of the app will not know this) with several bells and whistles for our own business specific purposes. My initial thought is to develop all of the engine in C and provide a nice API for the C library since JAVA and .NET will allow native invoking, and I should just be able to directly link to the C lib in objective-C. Is there a better approach for vast code reuse which also remains close to the native platform? I.e. I don't want dependencies such as Mono-droid and the like or complicated interpreter/translator schemes. I don't mind re-coding the view(s) for each platform, but I do not want to have multiple versions of the main engine. Also, if I want to have some good abstraction mechanisms (like I would in say, C++) is this possible? I have read that C++ is not allowed for the IPad and Iphone devices. I would love to handle the media decoding in the C library, but I assume that this will be platform dependent so that probably will not be an option either. Any ideas here?

• MVC or Extract Service Layer

  we have an application that is built with .Net MVC. We are now tasked with exposing API's to third parties. Members on our team want to just continue down our current path and just use more controllers so we can reuse the backend of our current application. Logic tells me we need to create a seperate service layer when more clients are going to be accessing it, but .Net MVC seems to take care of all of this. Is it really acceptable architecture to use controllers in a stand alone application to expose API's and what would be the potential gains of extracting the service layer out?

  Is it dangerous to substitute unit tests for user testing? A co-worker believes we can reduce the manual user testing we need to do by adding more unit tests. Is this dangerous? Unit tests seem to have a very different purpose than user testing. Aren't unit tests to inform design and allow breaking changes to be caught early? Isn't that fundamentally different than determining if an aspect of the system is correct as a whole of the system? Is this a case of substituting apples for oranges?

• Ubuntu 12.10, mouse double click by itself

  I updated ubuntu 11.10 some time ago and I had a problem with my mouse. When I click somewhere it would double click by itself. It was pretty anoying as I would start 2x my application almost each time. Then, some update came and the mouse was better. But now, I updated to 12.10 and it does the same thing again. I'm using an Logitech MX Revolution. I don't know what I can do to resolve this problem? Thanks

• dropbox configuration

  I've dropbox v1.4.17 installed and I want to change the path from (...)/Dropbox to (...)/dropbox. I think until v1.2 this was done by changing dropbox_path field in the sqlite file ~/.dropbox/config.db. Now, this field is hidden inside the encrypted ~/.dropbox/config.dbx (security reasons [1], I guess). Anyone has a solution to this? • Sudo apt-get update -f does not work?

  I am a bit of a noob with Linux. Several months ago I updated to Ubuntu 12.04, then stopped using Ubuntu for a while for a variety of reasons. Now I would like to go back to it, but I have a couple of problems. For one thing, the Software Center will simply not load. I click on the icon, the program comes up, but it never loads, and when I close it I get a "window not responding" message. • Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Purple Screen Error. FIX

"test" is a directory with the following files ... bob@bob-laptop:~/test$ ls exclude exclude1 exclude2 include1 include2 from the command line, if I want to exclude some of the files, I can do ... bob@bob-laptop:~/test$ echo !(exclude*) include1 include2 but, if I put that command in a script (named exclude) ... bob@bob-laptop:~/test$ cat exclude echo !(exclude*) when I execute it, I get an error ... bob@bob-laptop:~/test$ ./exclude ./exclude: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token (' ./exclude: line 1:echo !(exclude*)' I've tried every (I think) variation of escaping some, all or none of the special characters and I still get an error. What am I missing here? If I can't do this, would someone please be so kind as to explain why?

  I'm trying to install ubunutu 12.04 on my 2005 PowerMac G5. I've burnt ubuntu-12.04-desktop-powerpc.iso. I try to boot from the live cd. I hit 'enter' to load the live environment. The kernel seems to be fine but then I get this: kernel panic - not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0) Then it says rebooting in 180........ and hangs. I can't do anything. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

• Dell XPS 15 with Ubuntu 12.10 and HDMI working on hybrid graphics

  So there is a lot of buzz about hybrid graphics being shitty and having a weak support. I'm currently considering buying a new laptop. Dell XPS 15 caught my eye. I will use it for work as well so I will need a large monitor for it connected by HDMI. The question is: has someone got a Dell XPS 15 and can confirm that hybrid graphics support is working fine on 12.10 with no issues on the HDMI. I ask this because all the buzz about the subject stops on 12.04 - does this mean that it's all ok now :) ?

• Fan very loud in Ubuntu 12.10

  I recently installed 12.10 on my Desktop PC, moving away from Windows 7. For some reason, the fan in my computer is making an enormous amount of noise (it is running at full speed constantly). Under Windows 7, the fan would slow itself down and run at an acceptable noise level. Now, it is nearly unbearable. Checked the processes, and none are taking up a huge load on the CPU. Please help as I really can't endure this noise, and I do not want to go back to Windows 7 on this box. Some specs: - Intel 2.26 duo core - ATI 4870 - 4GB - 650W power supply

• eGalax Touchscreen not working Jolicloud 1.2

  I have an eGalax touchscreen on an Acer Aspire One running Jolicloud 1.2 I have had success getting this touchscreen to work correctly on ubuntu 10.04NBR, 11.04 and Kubuntu 12.04 and Puppy Linux, so I am pretty happy with how it SHOULD be done. However, I cannot get it to calibrate correctly or remember calibration settings. I have installed the eGalax utility (all available versions) and it does not recognize the screen. Xinput_calibrator works but the config cannot be made permanent. Problems I have identified: -Joli doesn't have an xorg.conf file and does not use xorg.conf.d for evdev configuration -Setting configs through Hal doesn't work anymore The best I can get is a poorly adjusted touchscreen with a reversed Y axis. Any help greatly appreciated

• ubuntu-overlay-scrollbars set to false shows no arrows in several cases

  I'm running 12.04, and prefer the more conservative style "normal" scrollbars over the overlay scrollbars. I have set them to false in the terminal: gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface ubuntu-overlay-scrollbars false However after doing so, with some apps (e.g. Nautilus, Document Viewer) my scrollbars only view a vertical bar, but no arrows on the top and bottom to scroll up and down. With some programs these are shown though, for instance Gummi and Texmaker. It would make a big difference (for instance when having to scroll pdf documents containing several hundreds of pages) to have those arrows reinstated. Is there any way to make this work?

  Somehow I messed up and accidentally made my usb stick into a read only file system. I have tried a bunch of things to delete the files, including the basic (rm -f myfile) and attempting to allow writing (sudo chmod +w myfile) and then deleting, but none of this seems to work. Any ideas on what I can do. I don't have anything on the usb stick that I need, but I don't want to throw away an otherwise perfectly good piece of equipment. How can I make it work? Am I going about this completely the wrong way?

• Yelp Like Adjective Rating System

  I am building a website that has users list their outdoor adventures (skydiving, surfing, base jumping, etc) and the other people can comment on them. I want to have a rating system like Yelp which has "Useful, Funny, or Cool" but with different adjectives. I have thought of a few such as Daring, Adventurous, and Unique but I wanted to get some feedback on what a few other good adjectives would be. Also does anyone have experience with other such systems or advice for better systems? Primarily I just want the user to have somewhat more descriptive voting options than u and down or 1 though 5.

• Dotted subdomain name or new domain?

  I have a company website hosted at www.BRAND.com (where BRAND is a generic name). The company want to develop a "micro website" for one of their campaigns, named "Inspired By BRAND". I have two directions: inspired.by.BRAND.com - which I personally don't like too much. I don't know why but I don't recall any web address similar to this one subdomain.subdomain.domain.com. inspired.BRAND.com - which I this is best suited for it. Fewer dots and similar to "more friendly" addresses subdomain.domain.com. Any hints, guidelines, any thoughts is well appreciated. Thanks in advance

• when the page scroll to certain point, how to make a second fixed header appear

  I have a page that will be responsive and I also want to add a header that appears once the visitor scrolls for a bit. The header will supplant the main header in order to be visible as the user travels down the page. I think this was a convention that people have used, and I need some help, as i can't really code it from scratch. Has anyone seen examples or tutorials on this. I've looked but can't come up with it.
