  • Compressing with RAR vs ZIP

    A lot of people are compressing files with RAR, sending compressed files with RAR and so on. ZIP is more standard and works on all platforms. Windows users have ZIP included and linux users have no trouble with that file format. The tests I did sometime ago showed me that RAR compress better (some KyloBytes, no more) but not enough to use a non-free software when ZIP works on almost all the computers for free. Why do some people use RAR rather than ZIP for compressing?

  • Twitter status id conundrum

    I have an interest, a slightly perverse one some might say, in using online services and trying to figure out what the underlying (logical) data model is and in this day and age Twitter is one that lends itself very well to scrutiny. Consider this recent tweet of mine: The URL that enables you to see that tweet is http://twitter.com/jamiet/status/12154647354. We can interpret that URL to mean "a tweet by jamiet with an id of 12154647354" and hence we might further assume that the unique identifier for the tweet is {jamiet,12154647354}. However, its well-known that Twitter gives each status a unique ID regardless of who tweeted it so we might expect we could reach that tweet just by using a URL of http://twitter.com/status/12154647354 however (at the time of writing) that only redirects to Twitter's homepage. That seems strange to me especially given that we can use Twitter's API to access information about that tweet using only the id of the status. Witness http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/show/12154647354.xml: [We can also access a JSON version of that information using http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/show/12154647354.json] I'm puzzled as to why a tweet can't be accessed using on the main twitter website using the id alone.   • Select parameter not working on SqlDataSource.

    I am using the stored procedure below for the select command of a SqlDataSource, and I'm trying to pass a query string parameter, but I get this error: Procedure or function 'ActivationCampaignGetById' expects parameter '@campaignId', which was not supplied.   • Symfony form values missing

    Hi, I was writing a simple login form, everything works fine (validation etc.) but I can't get the values, there's my code: public function executeIndex(sfWebRequest $request) { $this->getUser()->clearCredentials(); $this->getUser()->setAuthenticated(false); $this->form = new LoginForm(); if ($request->isMethod('post') && $request->hasParameter('login')) { $this->form->bind($request->getParameter('login')); if ($this->form->isValid()) { $this->getUser()->setAuthenticated(true); $this->getUser()->addCredential('user'); $this->login = $this->form->getValue('login'); } } } $this-login is NULL. Now I checked almost everything, the form is valid, isBound() is true, count() returns 3, I can see the values in my request: parameterHolder: action: index login: { login: foo, password: foo, _csrf_token: 53ebddee1883d7e3d6575d6fb1707a15 } module: login BUT getValues() returns NULL, getValue('login') etc. returns NULL as well. How can it be? And no, I don't want to use sfGuard-Plugins ;)

  • Authlogic, logout, credential capture and security

    Ok this is something weird. I got authlogic-oid installed in my rails app today. Everything works perfectly fine but for one small nuisance. This is what i did: I first register with my google openid. Successful login, redirection and my email, along with my correct openid is stored in my database. I am happy that everything worked fine! Now when i logout, my rails app as usual destroys the session and redirects me back to my root url where i can login again. Now if i try to login it still remembers my last login id. Not a big issue as i can always "Sign in as a different user" but i am wondering if there is anyway to not only logout from my app but also logout from google. I noticed the same with stack overflow's openid authentication system. Why am i so bothered about this, you may ask. But is it not a bad idea if your web apps end user, who happens to be in a cyber cafe, thinks he has logged out from your app and hence from his google account only to realize later that his google account had got hacked by some unworthy loser who just happened to notice that the one before him had not logged out from google and say.. changed his password!! Should i be paranoid? Isn't this a major security lapse while implementing the openid spec? Probably today someone can give me a workaround for this issue and the question is solved for me. But what about the others who have implemented openid in their apps and not implemented a workaround?

  • mysql count, distinct, join? COnfusion

    hello i have 2 tables: tblItems ID | orderID | productID 1 1 2 2 1 2 3 2 1 4 3 2 tblProducts productID | productName 1 ABC 2 DEF im attempting to find the most popular Product based on whats in "tblItems", and display the product Name and the number of times it appears in the tblItems table. i can get mysql to count up the total like: $sql="SELECT COUNT(productID) AS CountProductID FROM tblItems"; but i can't figure out how to join the products table on..if i try LEFT JOIN the query goes horribly wrong hopefully thats not too confusing..thankss

  • Jquery AJAX and figuring out how NOT to nest callbacks for multiple reloads.

    I have a site with a few containers that need to load content dynamically via AJAX. Most of the links inside of the containers actually load new data in that same container. I.E: $("#navmenu_item1").click(function() { $("#navmenu").load(blah); }); When I click on a link, lets say "logout," and the menu reloads with the updated login status, none of the links now work because I would need to add a new .click into the callback code. Now with repeated clicks and AJAX requests I am not sure how to move forward from here, as I am sure nested callbacks are not optimal. What would be the best way to do this? Do I include the .click event inside the actual AJAX file being pulled from the server, instead of within index.php? Or can I somehow reload the DOM? Thanks for the help!

    hi, 1) if I create items in a for loop, is correct to add a new eventListener for each item ? Or should I add only 1 eventListener to the parent ? and call the event through ID ? 2) if I want to scale my item, (a LinkButton with icon image), I noticed that the icon is sometimes resized with delay, so I have a bit of flickering when I trigger the event. Should I not use icons, and set the image in another way ? How can I fix this ? thanks

  • How can I create personalized menus in WPF?

    I'm working on an XmlEditor (similar to XmlNotepad, but using WPF) in which I want to implement personalized menus. I.e. only show the most popular MenuItems on first open, and show all MenuItems when the user explicitly asks for it, either by clicking on the double arrow at the bottom or waiting for a certain amount of time.   • Submitting GET data with no input field?

    I've never really thought about this, but it helps with some security of something I'm currently working on. Is it possible to submit GET data without an actual input field, and instead just getting it from the URL? If so, how would I go about doing this? It kind of makes sense that it should be possible, but at the same time it makes no sense at all. Perhaps I've been awake too long and need some rest. But I'd like to finish this project a bit more first, so any help you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks

  • UIViewController presentModalViewController: animated: doing nothing?

    Hi, I recently started a project, using Apple's Utility Application example project. In the example project, there's an info button that shows an instance of FlipSideView. If you know the Weather.app, you know what the button acts like. I then changed the MainWindow.xib to contain a scrollview in the middle of the window and a page-control view at the bottom of the window (again, like the Weather.app). The scrollview gets filled with instances of MainView. When I then clicked the info button, the FlipSideView would show, but only in the area that was previously filled by the MainView instance – this means that the page-control view on the bottom of the page still showed when the FlipSideView instance got loaded. So, I thought that I would simply add a UIViewController for the top-most window, which is the one declared inside the AppDelegate created along side with the project. So, I created a subclass of UIViewController, put an instance of it inside MainWindow.xib and connected it's view outlet to the UIWindow declared as window inside the app delegate. I also changed the button's action, so that it know sends a message to the MainWindowController instance. The message does get sent (I checked with NSLog() statements), but the FlipSideView doesn't get shown. Here's the relevant (?) code: FlipsideViewController *controller = [[FlipsideViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"FlipsideView" bundle:nil]; controller.delegate = self; controller.modalTransitionStyle = UIModalTransitionStyleFlipHorizontal; [self presentModalViewController:controller animated:YES]; [controller release]; Why's this not working?   • What can cause legit MySql INSERT INTO command to fail?

    I can't figure out what's causing my INSERT INTO's to fail to certain table in MySql. I can manage them to other tables. The table looks like: CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `Match` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `match_no` int(11) NOT NULL, `season` int(11) NOT NULL, `hometeam` int(11) NOT NULL, `awayteam` int(11) NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`), KEY `match_no` (`match_no`), KEY `season` (`season`), KEY `hometeam` (`hometeam`), KEY `awayteam` (`awayteam`) ) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=1 ; And the command is INSERT INTO Match (`match_no`, `season`, `hometeam`, `awaytem`) VALUES (1, 1, 2, 3) All I get is: 1064 - You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'Match (match_no, season, hometeam, awaytem) VALUES (1, 1, 2, 3)' at line 1 I have checked the manual and half-a-dozen examples from the web and whatnought and tried all sorts of changes to the syntax in case there is some MySql specific oddity, but nothing seems to work.

  • Vim syntax highlighting not working

It only highlights the comments and a few variables - nothing like the picture. http://concisionandconcinnity.blogspot.com/2009/07/vim-part-i-improved-python-syntax.html Is there some other setting I am forgetting?
