  • Any one like me who still believes in AspNet Web forms? Or has evryone switched to MVC

    After years mastering Aspnet webforms I recently decided to try out ASpnet MVC. Naturally my first action was to google 'Aspnet webforms vs Aspnet MVC'. I hoped to get an honest comparison of the two development techniques and guidelines on when to use which one. ..But I was completely turned off by the MVC proponents. In almost every post on the net comparing the two 'platforms' the MVC camp is simply bashing webform developers like me. They go on and on about how wrong and stupid using webforms is. As if what we have been doing the past decade has been pointless - all those websites built(& still running), all those clever controls, the mighty gridview..ALL POINTLESS ! Karl Seguin especially with his stupid webforms rant really turned me off. If his intention was to convert people like me he did the oposite and made me defensive. If anything I am now convinced that the webforms approach is better. consider the following All the critical shortcomings of aspnet webforms have now been Addressed in visual studio 2010 with Aspnet 4.0.- Cleaner html, cleaner control IDs, friendly urls, leaner viewstate etc Why would any one want to implement the mighty gridview and other wonderful controls from scratch ? In MVC you have to do this yourself because ABSTRACTION IS PLAIN STUPID- Instead of writing loops why not just code using 1s and 0s then? A stateless web is a WEAKNESS so why would anyone want to get rid of viewstate? Everyone would like a better implementation but getting rid of it is a step backwards not forward. Unit testing is great but not a critical requirement for most web projects. I thought inline codes were dead with asp. But now they are back and fashionable - Thanks to MVC. I dont know about you people but codebehind was REVOLUTIONARY. Ive had the Ajax Update panel do so many wonderful things without writing a line of code so why demonise it? Ive succesfully implemented a chat client, IM client and Status bar using nothing but the update panel and script manager.Ofcourse you cant use it for everything but most of the time its appropriate. And finally the last word from JQUERY - 'Write less do more !' - That's what webforms is all about ! So Am I the only who still believes in webforms(and it getting better as Aspnet 4.0 has shown) or will it be dead and gone a few years from now like asp? I mean if inline coding is 'the future' why not just switch to PHP !

  • Forcing CLLocationManager updates - does it help or hurt?

    I've been trying to find any way to optimize the performance of my location-based iPhone application and have seen some people mention that you can force location updates by starting and stopping your CLLocationManager. I need the best accuracy I can get, and the user in my case would probably like to see updates every few seconds (say, 10 seconds) as they walk around. I've set the filters accordingly, but I notice that sometimes I don't get any updates on the device for quite some time. I'm testing the following approach, which forces an update when a fixed time interval passes (I'm using 20 seconds). My gut tells me this really won't help me provide more accurate updates to the user, and that just leaving CLLocationManager running all the time is probably the best approach. - (void)forceLocationUpdate { [[LocationManager locationManager] stopUpdates]; [[LocationManager locationManager] startUpdates]; [self performSelector:@selector(forceLocationUpdate) withObject:nil afterDelay:20.0]; } My question is- does forcing updates from CLLocationManager actually improve core location performance?   • Sprintf equivalent in Mathematica?

    I don't know why Wikipedia lists Mathematica as a programming language with printf. I just couldn't find the equivalent in Mathematica. My specific task is to process a list of data files with padded numbers, which I used to do it in bash with fn=$(printf "filename_%05d" $n) The closest function I found in Mathematica is PaddedForm. And after some trial and error, I got it with "filename_" <> PaddedForm[ Round@#, 4, NumberPadding -> {"0", ""} ]& It is very odd that I have to use the number 4 to get the result similar to what I get from "%05d". I don't understand this behavior at all. Can someone explain it to me? And is it the best way to achieve what I used to in bash?

  • iPhone: NSHTTPCookie is not saved across app restarts

    In my iPhone app, I want to be able to reuse the same server-side session when my app restarts. A session on the server is identified by a cookie, which is sent on each request. When I restart the app, that cookie is gone and I can't use the same session anymore. What I noticed when I used the NSHTTPCookieStorage to look up the cookie I got from the server, is that [cookie isSessionOnly] returns YES. I get the impression that this is why cookies are not saved across restarts of my app. What would I have to do to make my cookie NOT session only? What HTTP headers do I have to send from the server?

  • Returning an error code in Erlang

UIViewController contain elements such as UITextView, UIImage, UIScrollView. Problem is i have been trying to make this application respond to iphone rotation e.g. when held in landscape, application should switch to landscape and vice versa, but nothing works so far.

  • Simple PHP Regex question

    Hi all, I'd like to validate a field in a form to make sure it contains the proper formatting for a URL linking to a Vimeo video.   • Small change in MVVM Light Toolkit templates for Blend 4 RC

    Ah, the joy of new releases… You will find that the MVVM Light Toolkit works fine with Visual Studio 2010 RTM and Blend 4 RC except for a few adjustments: Blend templates The path to the Expression Blend 4 project templates changed. If you start Expression Blend 4 RC now, you will likely not see the MVVM Light templates in the New Project dialog.   New Project dialog with MVVM Light To restore the templates, follow the steps: Open Windows Explorer Navigate to C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Expression (or simply type My Documents in Windows Explorer and then open the Expression folder). Change the name of the “Blend 4 beta” folder into “Blend 4”. That’s it, you should now see the templates in the New Project dialog in Blend 4. Note that since the new name is “Blend 4”, I hope that I won’t need to do the same exercise when Blend 4 RTM is released! Windows Phone 7 templates Since the Windows Phone 7 tools are not ready yet for Visual Studio 2010 RTM and Blend 4 RC, the templates in the Silverlight for Windows Phone folders will not work. You will get an error if you try to create a new such project in the newly released environment. I hesitated to remove these templates from the current packages, but honestly that is a lot of trouble for a very short time before the tools for Windows Phone 7 are released (note: I don’t have any information as to when these tools will be released). In the mean time, just don’t create a WinPhone7 application. Reminder: If you want to write code for Windows Phone 7, you need to keep the Visual Studio 2010 RC as well as Expression Blend 4 beta. Updated package I uploaded an update to the Blend 4 templates.   • Dell Dimension 2400 problem

    I have a new problem with a Dell Dimension 2400 PC. Until yesterday or the day before, it was working fine, but today when I press the power button the light on the power button turns yellow instead of green, the fan behind the processor increases speed until it sounds like a jet engine, and the computer does not boot up. I cleaned out the dust in the computer so that is not the problem. Also, the fan was blowing cold air. Do any of you know what might be causing this and how I might be able to fix it?

  • How does file compression work?

    So, I realised today I take file compression for granted. The ability to bundle a few files together into one, and have it come out smaller than any of them, is something I just accept as a fact, but how does it actually work? I have a limited knowledge of it that includes something to do with replacing all the duplicate entries with pointers, to shrink that way, but beyond that I'm fairly clueless! As I'm always open to new knowledge, as I imagine most of us here are, I thought I'd ask. So, SuperUser, how does compression actually work?

  • Shortcut for enabling / disabling Greasemonkey (or specific script)

    talking about firefox here ... I don't use Greasemonkey on any other browser, but if you know, do add info for those as well I use Greasemonkey daily ... having some 20 scripts loaded all the time which save me a ton of grief. But, some of them I sometimes don't need ... few examples: - I use Google Image Status Reporter & Direct Images (links you directly to image file) ... but sometimes I want to go to the page where the image is ... - GReader Minimalist Style ... until I actually need to check the trends and some stuff it hides - there are other examples but these two first sprang to mind, since I just were thinking about that ... To put the long story short ... sometimes I would like a shortcut to disable Greasemonkey, so I don't have to go into the menubar and so on (which I also have half hidden for space) ... anyone knows of any, or how one could create one ?

  • Should I call release on these cocoa objective-c variables?

    In the code below I'm making a new NSString with alloc and initializing it with the contents of some file. Because I'm calling alloc I know it's my responsibility to call release on the string when I'm done. But what about the variables "lines" and "line"? Since the method "componentsSeparatedByString" does not start with the word "new" or "create" can I assume "lines" will be autoreleased? Same question for "line" since "objectAtIndex" also does not start with "new" or "create". NSString* buffer = [[NSString alloc] initWithData:[fileManager contentsAtPath:@"/foo"] encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]; NSArray* lines = [buffer componentsSeparatedByString:@"\n"]; NSString* line = [lines objectAtIndex:5]; // do something with line [buffer release]; So is the code above okay? Or should I be calling "release" on lines and line too? Thanks.

  • C++ Interpreter: How to emit error messages?

    I want to emit dynamic error messages like all interpreters do nowadays, for example: Name error: Undefined variable would be constant, however what I want to reach is: Name error: Undefined variable 'X', in line 1 Okay. The line number was really no problem: Every error message must have a line number, so I added it to the error emitter function: Error( ErrType type, string msg, int line ); So where is my problem? How do I get the 'X' into Undefined variable *? I can't use sprintf as it doesn't support strings yet I use them everywhere I can't simply use cout and connect everything as I want error messages to be supressable I'd like to get everything into one function like above, Error() How do I put together dynamic error messages? For example: Error( Name, sprintf("Undefined variable %s", myVariableName ), lineNum ); (But myVariableName is a string and sprintf will mess things up)

  • Checkout multiple revision of one file in CVS repository

    Hi, To checkout I use the following command CVSROOT="/home/projects/stuff/" cvs co mywork with the mywork directory I have text files as well as pictures, i.e., looks something like this - paper.tex - pic1.jpg - pic2.jpg etc. In particular, I am interested in checking out all the version of paper.tex over time. Is there a way how I can check all revisions of this file out at once? Or which command can I use to see when revision have been made to this particular file? many thanks for your help, Andrew
