  • Types in Bytecode

    Hey everyone, I've been working for some time on (Java) Bytecode, however, it had never occurred to me to ask why are some instructions typed? I understand that in an ADD operation, we need to distinguish between an integer addition and a FP addition (that's why we have IADD and FADD). However, why do we need to distinguish between ISTORE and FSTORE? They both involve the exact same operation, which is moving 32 bits from the stack to a local variable position? The only answer I can think of is for type-safety, to prevent this: (ILOAD, ILOAD, FADD). However, I believe that type-safety is already enforced at the Java language level. OK, the Class file format is not directly coupled with Java, so is this a way to enforce type-safety for languages that do not support it? Any thought? Thank you.

  • MVVM Light toolkit - maintained? Here today - gone tomorrow? ...

    Hi there, I have been taking a look at mvvm light toolkit, i must admit i haven't got a lot of experience with it but i live what i see.. I did use the mvvm toolkit (microsoft) but currently use vs 2010 and no templates are available as yet. I was looking for some insight into mvvm light toolkit... Is it always maintained ? i..e its not going to be gone tomorrow... Or shoudl i be looking elsewhere?? I would really appreciate any feedback... I also saw some info on how it is blendable which the mvvm toolkit (microsoft) didn't seem to have.. Prism also seems to be also a likely candidate but from what i understand its not a MVVM framework / toolkit i would be using it with wpf Any help really appreciated Thank you

  • Does SetThreadPriority cause thread reschedulling?

    Consider following situation, assuming single CPU system: thread A is running with a priority THREAD_PRIORITY_NORMAL, signals event E thread B with a priority THREAD_PRIORITY_LOWEST is waiting for an event E (Note: at this point the thread is not scheduled because it is runnable, but A is higher priority and runnable as well) thread A calls SetThreadPriority(B, THREAD_PRIORITY_ABOVE_NORMAL) Is thread B re-scheduled immediately to run, or is thread A allowed to continue until current time-slice is over, and B is scheduled only once a new time-slice has begun? I would be interested to know the answer for WinXP, Vista and Win7, if possible. Note: the scenario above is simplified from my real world code, where multiple threads are running on multiple cores, but the main object of the question stays: does SetThreadPriority cause thread scheduling to happen?

  • xen debian: domU can't get out side

  • Large svn external

    I have a project which uses a large library residing in its own repository. Using: Tortoise-SVN, the server is running an enterprise edition of VisualSVN The project itself has the "standard" structure: trunk tags branches In each branch, tag, and trunk is the library, set as an external (svn:external property). If I get the entire tree, I get the library several times, which is just getting too ridiculously repetitive. Is there a recommended structure for this? Or perhaps a way not to get all externals (because other externals are much smaller, easier to manipulate)?

  • How to line-wrap console output in NetBeans 6.8?

    Is there a way to make the console output text wrap based on the actual width of the window? I have limited screen height real estate on my laptop, and so want to have the console window docked on the right rather than the bottom of the window. An option or a plugin is fine, I'm using NetBeans 6.8. If this exists in a newer version of NetBeans, please say so, but I can't install a dev build.

  • Address extraction from emails in Java

    I'm looking for an Java open-source library which is able to extract address information from a (German) email (signature). The library should find name street city, city code/postal code email tel/fax address-parser.com is an commercial product, but an free (albeit simple) library would be great. stackoverflow.com/questions/16413/parse-usable-street-address-city-state-zip-from-a-string is asking for something similar, but my problem is broader because the address information is hidden in a complete email. And there isn't a solution either... Any ideas?

  • Any good lightweight date/time picker for web with good UI ?

    Few wishes, If it is jQuery based, best. If it focus easy UI then eye candy, better. If it is date and time picker both, good. Edit: I should have mentioned , I already looked most options available that I can found using google. Problem is not a single date+time picker is part of official jquery-ui project so some are for old jquery version. some have ugly UI choices. One which have somewhat good UI seems buggy.

  • web.config inheritance problem

    Hello everyone, I am having an issue when I try and prevent inhertiance from a parent web.config down to a child specifically related to the node. My parent web.config contains about a dozen appSettings values while my child web.config contains none. Now, I originally began wrapping around only my system.net, web, etc nodes however when I ran my child application I recieved the following error: The configuration section 'appSettings' cannot be read because it is missing a section declaration I really wasn't sure what this meant and a google search didn't yield me any decent results so I attempted to move the location node to also encompass the field in my parent web.config but to no avail. My child web.config is pretty vanilla so I am not sure what the problem is. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.   • Image creation performance / image caching

    Hello, I'm writing an application that has a scrollable image (used to display a map). The map background consists of several tiles (premade from a big JPG file), that I draw on a Graphics object. I also use a cache (Hashtable), to prevent from having to create every image when I need it. I don't keep everything in memory, because that would be too much. The problem is that when I'm scrolling through the map, and I need an image that wasn't cached, it takes about 60-80 ms to create it. Depending on screen resolution, tile size and scroll direction, this can occur multiple times in one scroll operation (for different tiles). In my case, it often happens that this needs to be done 4 times, which introduces a delay of more than 300 ms, which is extremely noticeable. The easiest thing for me would be that there's some way to speed up the creation of Images, but I guess that's just wishful thinking... Besides that, I suppose the most obvious thing to do is to load the tiles predictively (e.g. when scrolling to the right, precache the tiles to the right), but then I'm faced with the rather difficult task of thinking up a halfway decent algorithm for this. My actual question then is: how can I best do this predictive loading? Maybe I could offload the creation of images to a separate thread? Other things to consider? Thanks in advance.

  • How do I Store / Access Translations Efficiently?

    I am trying to translate some of the phrases of my website into various languages. so, in my database, I have a table with rows of ID//text//dest_language//text_in_dest_language At the moment, I retreive each translation one by one: get text_in_dest_language where text="Hello World" and dest_languge="zh" This results in 40-50 db calls per page, which, on the app engine, is rather slow. What can I do to mitigate this slowdown?

  • ASP.NET Creating a Rich Repeater, DataBind wiping out custom added controls...

    So...I had this clever idea that I'd create my own Repeater control that implements paging and sorting by inheriting from Repeater and extending it's capabilities. I found some information and bits and pieces on how to go about this and everything seemed ok... I created a WebControlLibrary to house my custom controls. Along with the enriched repeater, I created a composite control that would act as the "pager bar", having forward, back and page selection. My pager bar works 100% on it's own, properly firing a paged changed event when the user interacts with it. The rich repeater databinds without issue, but when the databind fires (when I call base.databind()), the control collection is cleared out and my pager bars are removed. This screws up the viewstate for the pager bars making them unable to fire their events properly or maintain their state. I've tried adding the controls back to the collection after base.databind() fires, but that doesn't solve the issue. I start to get very strange results including problems with altering the hierarchy of the control tree (resolved by adding [ViewStateModeById]). Before I go back to the drawing board and create a second composite control which contains a repeater and the pager bars (so that the repeater isn't responsible for the pager bars viewstate) are there any thoughts about how to resolve the issue? In the interest of share and share alike, the code for the repeater itself is below, the pagerbars aren't as significant as the issue is really the maintaining of state for any additional child controls.   • Multiple Broadcast Messages with Less Data or Less Broadcast Messages with More Data?

    Hi, I am developing an application which is communicating with the server. Tha application can perform log-in and get different parameters from server. The application consists of a RESTful client (custom class for making requests), Communication Service (the service which runs in the background) and the main activity. For now I created multiple broadcast messages and multiple broadcast receivers in the main activity so when the application performs login operation a receiver (loginBroadcastReceiver) in the main activity receives a message and when another parameter is received from the server different message is broadcasted and another receiver handles the message. This way however the application performance is poor but I am not sure whether it is due to multiple broadcast receivers. Does anyone know what is the best way to exchange data between service and main activity - is it better to create a single broadcast receiver and retrieve all parameters from message or is it better to initialize multiple broadcast receivers for multiple parameters? I would appreciate if you could provide any useful resource about the topic because I'm writing the thesis and it would be good if the solution could be explained.
