• Windows 8 with LiveID login authenticates as Guest to remote SQl Server

  I have a network where several users are using Office Accounting 2009 in multi-user client/server mode. OA is built on SQL Server. One PC acts as the 'server' and has the SQl Server instance, the others have only the application installed and no SQL instance, all of the apps connect remotely to the SQL instance on the 'server'. I'm using the term 'server' loosely here, it is just a normal workstation that happens to be designated as the server and runs the SQL instance. There is no NT domain, all user accounts are local accounts. The way that OA works in multi-user mode is that each user is required to have a local account with the same username and password on both the client and 'server' PCs. This has been working well, no along comes Windows 8. I use my 'Microsoft Account' aka LiveID to log into Windows 8. Office Accounting runs fine and attempts to connect to the database, but fails, 'you do not have permission to perform this operation'. In the SQL logs, I get this error: 2012-10-28 17:54:01.32 Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. 2012-10-28 17:54:01.32 Logon Login failed for user 'SERVER\Guest'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure SERVER is the hostname of the server. So it seems to be authenticating as 'Guest'?? To verify this, I enabled the Guest account on the 'server' PC and then added Guest as an allowed user within Office Accounting (this simply creates the user in SQL and gives it an appropriate database role). Sure enough, My Windows 8 PC was then able to connect to the database when using Office Accounting. Clearly, having users authenticate as 'Guest' stinks from a security and auditing standpoint. So what I need are some ideas for how to work around this. I've tried switching the Windows 8 PC to a 'local account' and that works too, but requires giving up significant functionality on the Windows 8 PC. What I really need is a way to force the Windows 8 PC to use a specific set of credentials when connecting to the remote SQL instance. Office Accounting takes the logged in username, which is my LiveID and doesn't correspond to any Windows user name. Anyone solved this issue?

• booting FreeBSD 9 from USB stick: boot error

  I am trying to boot FreeBSD 9 from a USB stick that I created following the official guidelines: dd if=FreeBSD-9.0-RELEASE-i386-memstick.img of=/dev/da0 bs=64k Booting fails with a simple 'boot error'. I have used this USB stick for quite a while for the very purpose of booting / installing new OSs, but I tried a different one anyway - same problem. I have also reproduced the issue on a different machine. I've acquired to image file over torrent which AFAIK has an md5 check built in, but I downloaded it again anyway directly from a FreeBSD mirror. Same result. Does anyone have any success with this ? I did not find anything related online which seems to suggest this is not a well-known problem. Does anyone have a thought where else to search for the cause of the problem ?

• javac compiler throwing error in CentOS 5.7

  I'm trying to install Red5 on a vps running CentOS 5.7 in MediaTemple using this how-to (dv):Install Red5 Media Server but on step 7 I get this error: BUILD FAILED /usr/local/red5/build.xml:217: The following error occurred while executing this line: /usr/local/red5/build.xml:238: Error running /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0.x86_64/bin/javac compiler Any idea how to fix it? Already Google and several users have had this same issue but none posted the solution or they never solved. • How can I forward an application with X11 in grayscale

  I am trying to run a graphical application at home and display it on a it on a laptop which is located about six routing hops away. The problem is that the connection is so slow (or rather there is so much GOOEY being transfered) that the mouse is unresponsive and it takes a "long time" to redraw the window even at a resolution of 800x600 pixels. The connection speeds are 10MBit up at home and about 1MBit down on the laptop, which I think should be sufficient for looking at some GUI in (almost) real time. Since this traffic is sent over over a secure shell, I have enabled Compression with highest CompressionLevel along with Ciphers set to blowfish-cbc. This has substantially improved the responsiveness of the application, making it nearly usable. However, my goal is to improve the performance even further by sacrificing colors and even frame rate. The application to be displayed a Qemu SDL window with a graphically-oriented OS in it. This is not strictly relevant, but perhaps there are options to tweak the SDL output which I am not aware of. A possible workaround would be to run the application in a "hidden" X server and enabling TigerVNC on that X server. This would automatically give me the benefits of an optimized VNC viewport, but the goal is to do without (reduce complexity). The question I'm asking is what are my options for reducing the data-rate generated on the server in order to make the graphical application more usable on the client. As mentioned, colors are not important and I could probably work with 5-16 fps. • Different routing rules for a particular user using firewall mark and ip rule

  Running Ubuntu 12.10 on amd64. I'm trying to set up different routing rules for a particular user. I understand that the right way to do this is to create a firewall rule that marks the packets for that user, and add a routing rule for that mark. Just to get testing going, I've added a rule that discards all packets as unreachable: # ip rule 0: from all lookup local 32765: from all fwmark 0x1 unreachable 32766: from all lookup main 32767: from all lookup default With this rule in place and all firewall chains in all tables empty and policy ACCEPT, I can still ping remote hosts just fine as any user. If I then add a rule to mark all packets and try to ping Google, it fails as expected # iptables -t mangle -F OUTPUT # iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -j MARK --set-mark 0x01 # ping www.google.com ping: unknown host www.google.com If I restrict this rule to the VPN user, it seems to have no effect. # iptables -t mangle -F OUTPUT # iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -j MARK --set-mark 0x01 -m owner --uid-owner vpn # sudo -u vpn ping www.google.com PING www.google.com (173.194.78.103) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from wg-in-f103.1e100.net (173.194.78.103): icmp_req=1 ttl=50 time=36.6 ms But it appears that the mark is being set, because if I add a rule to drop these packets in the firewall, it works: # iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -j DROP -m mark --mark 0x01 # sudo -u vpn ping www.google.com ping: unknown host www.google.com What am I missing? • Are HDMI to VGA Adapters Really Device-Specific?

  There are a lot of devices on the market right now (especially mobile devices) with a Micro-HDMI or Mini-HDMI port and no VGA or D-Sub output. Most manufacturers of said devices sell a cable that looks something like this: I have yet to find a cable like this that claims to work on a wide array of devices. In general, these cables claim to work with one specific device only. The way these cables work, I think, is that analog VGA signals are sent from the HDMI port on the device. This should work for devices that have special hardware on the motherboard/GPU capable of driving this. Is it the case that these cables have to be custom designed for each device? Or, is it rather that any device which possesses this special "signaling of analog VGA over the HDMI port" can be made to work with a cable that is physically compatible (i.e. the HDMI end plugs into the device and the VGA end accepts a VGA monitor cable)? Note that I am not looking for a product recommendation, just a conceptual clarification on what exactly these devices are doing. Also, a few remarks: The cables like the one depicted here are not digital to analog converters. I know about these: they are expensive, and they are the ONLY solution if your device only outputs a digital signal and is incapable of driving analog VGA over the HDMI port. The cables like the one depicted here are not straight crossover cables from VGA to HDMI, either. The crossover cables are designed to send a digital HDMI signal over the VGA port's wires; that is, the wire protocol is HDMI (digital) but the physical pinout is the same as VGA, even though nothing analog is happening. Once again, this is not the behavior that, I believe, the devices which I'm talking about in this question are doing. The cabling and devices that this question is about transmit the analog VGA data over the HDMI port (the HDMI port is in the device outputting the data, and the VGA side is the monitor/projector).

• How to use AND/OR Building Block content in a Word 2007 template

  I am creating a Schedule of Work template and am successfully using Developer Tab and Quick Parts to allow user to choose content on an "either/or" basis: either A; OR B; OR C; etc., essentially choose one option from many. One Building Block control, one paragraph, nice and clean. Now what I need to do but cannot seem to figure out, is how to allow user to choose content on an "and/or" basis: either A AND B; A OR B AND C; B AND D AND E OR F; etc., essentially choose several options from many on a variable basis. One Building Block control, maybe one paragraph, maybe three or more paragraphs. Not so clean. I thought of building choice options for all possible paragraph combinations, but I can have as many as 7 or 8 different paragraphs, and that solution quickly becomes unworkable. Multiple controls--some of which will be left unused doesn't work either, since I cannot find an easy way to have a "Choose or Delete" control that actually deletes if "Delete" is chosen. Recommendations are most welcome.

  I am a 6th year medical student and I'm working on my thesis. I have no experience with programming whatsoever, a friend recommended me to post my question here. I am strugling with the following problem: I have data of 400 patients, stored in 400 different excel files. Each file contains 34 columns in a specific order, let's say A to Z. The order is the same in each of these 400 files. Now I need to a make a new excel document that contains the first column of each patient. So I need all the first columns of my 400 different excel files, lined up next to each other in a new document. Preferebally in the form of a automatic script. After that I want to do the exact same thing but for the second column, then the third and so on. This is probably a problem that has already been solved. Otherwise could someone help me out? You have my thanks!

• Master does not appear to be a git repository error

  I've inherited a position and instructions for creating a new git repository. Unfortunately I've run into problems and no one here knows what to do. Hoping someone can help me out. Here are the instructions I was left: Create a new repository: For these steps you need to be in the gitosis-admin repository, if you don't have it, in a suitable parent folder do: git clone [email protected]:gitosis-admin.git Edit gitosis.conf file - in gitosis-admin root, under [group base-repo] section, add the name of the new repo to the end of the "writable =" section. Commit change and push back to gitosis-admin master. For the next commands, my_new_project represents the name of your project mkdir my_new_project cd my_new_project git init Copy in any files you want to use to start the repo git commit -a -m "Initializing new repository" git remote add origin [email protected]:my_new_project.git git push master git push master:qa So I did 1 and 2, with no problem. It created a local folder on my machine called gitosis-admin. I edited the gitosis.conf file as indicated. But when I try to do step 3 (which I assume is git push gitosis-admin master) bash tells me that fatal: 'master' does not appear to be a git repository fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly What am I doing wrong?

• What software will tell me if I've already downloaded a video? [closed]

  (I use Linux KNOPPIX (distro 7.0.2, ver 3.3.7) on hard drive.) I download videos of TV programs from the 60s and 70s (mainly from youtube). I copy the youtube URL then paste it into www.keepvid.com to download it (usually .mp4 format). Having now got dozens of such video files (and growing) on my hard drive, I'd like to organise them. WHAT I'D LIKE TO DO IS: Say I find a new vid (of a TV prog) on youtube (or another site), and I'm about to download it. It's possible that I've WATCHED IT BEFORE but have forgotten. So is there software out there that I can run which will do the following: Check for me if I've ALREADY WATCHED the vid that I'm about to download. At the moment, once I've watched a vid on my hard drive, I move the file to another directory called "Watched". But this of course doesn't alert me in the immediate way that I want. . It would crudely suffice, if the software told me AFTER I've downloaded the vid, if I've ALREADY WATCHED it (ie if it's already in my "Watched" directory, or perhaps in a "watched" list). I sometimes alter the filename of the original video file on hard drive, so this might spoil a comparison. If the software alerts me to the fact that I've already watched the vid (preferably BEFORE I download it), then this will allow me to confidently download only new vids that I haven't watched before, and save me duplicating my effort. I'd be most grateful if anyone can suggest such a piece of software, or an alternative solution. I'll be honest, I avoid software that infringes your privacy and control - you know, software that automatically does things behind your back, like upgrades itself over the internet, puts things on your hard drive that you didn't ask for, or sends information from your hard drive to websites.

• How can I view and sort after the page count for multiple PDF files in a Windows file explorer?

  I unsuccessfully used the "pages" feature in Windows Explorer, as well as in Directory Opus 10 and Free Commander XT (which I installed just for that reason, to try it out) to display the page count of multiple PDFs in a folder. All my PDF's are free to edit, i.e. not write-protected. I don't understand why any PDF reader can display the (correct) page number, but none of the file explorers can? (In the "details" view of course.) The only documents whose page count is displayed are MS Word documents. Do I have to use Adobe Bridge? (I didn't try it.) On a side-note: Did that change in Windows 8? Initial research: Google search was unsuccessful, the only slightly related SE topic I found was "How to count pages in multiple PDF files?".

• Can't access unprotected .pst file in Outlook 2010

  My father has a Windows 7 x64 system with 32-bit Outlook 2010. He asked me to access his archived mail to get to some old mail. When going to open the file I'm asked for a password (he never applied one) and I get a message saying "password is incorrect. Re-Type password". Since he told me that he never set a password I tried opening the .pst with Nucleus, a tool that allows me to view the .pst's. Does anyone know what the deal is? With the free version of Nucleus we can't view the attachments.

• /srv/mm/Music (etc) Twonky won't scan here for media

  Is there something special about /srv/mm/ that Twonky server refuses to scan there? I previously had my system set up with all my Music, Video and Photo folders in /srv/mm shared by Samba, miniDLNA etc, with no problems. I came to install Twonky to replace miniDLNA and after two days of tearing my hair out, changing permissions and owners of the directories I ended up making a new directory at /multimedia and moved my Music, Video and Photo folders in there. Twonky then scanned them all straight away with no problems. I'm running Arch Linux (plugapps specifically) on a NAS. The solution is already implemented (moving the directory) I'm just wondering technically why Twonky might have refused to look for my media in the /srv/mm directories.

• svn client timeout on windows 7 64 bit

  I upgraded my PC to Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium - clean install. Since then I've tried to install the following SVN clients: Tortois 1.6.6 64bit and 32bit, Tortois 1.6.5 64bit, SlikSVN, SmartSVN, and a couple others. None of them will connect to ANY remote SVN repository. Note: Everything works correctly when I plug in my old Vista HD with Tortoise 1.6.6 client installed. Therefore, I do not suspect the network per se. I've seen some posts around with people running into similar issues on Windows 7 64bit but I've yet to see an actual answer/solution to the problem.

  NASA has released a high-resolution self portrait of Curiosity. The photo, a composite of images snapped by the rover’s agile arm and MAHLI camera, shows Curiosity in front of Mount Sharp. From the NASA release: The mosaic shows the rover at “Rocknest,” the spot in Gale Crater where the mission’s first scoop sampling took place. Four scoop scars can be seen in the regolith in front of the rover. The base of Gale Crater’s 3-mile-high (5-kilometer) sedimentary mountain, Mount Sharp, rises on the right side of the frame. Mountains in the background to the left are the northern wall of Gale Crater. The Martian landscape appears inverted within the round, reflective ChemCam instrument at the top of the rover’s mast. Self-portraits like this one document the state of the rover and allow mission engineers to track changes over time, such as dust accumulation and wheel wear. Due to its location on the end of the robotic arm, only MAHLI (among the rover’s 17 cameras) is able to image some parts of the craft, including the port-side wheels. The default deployment of the Oracle Database Appliance is high redundancy for the +DATA and +RECO disk groups. While there is 12TB of raw shared storage available, the Database Backup Location and Disk Group Redundancy govern how much usable storage is presented after the initial deployment is completed. The Database Backup Location options are Local or External. When the Local Backup Option is selected, this means that 60% of the available shared storage will be allocated for the Fast Recovery Area that contains database backups and archive logs. The External Backup Option will allocate 20% of the available shared storage to the Fast Recovery Area. So, let’s look at an example of High Redundancy and External Backups. Disk Group Redundancy – High --> Triple Mirroring to provide ~4TB of available storage Database Backup Location – External --> 20% of available shared storage allocated to +RECO +DATA = 3.2TB of usable storage, +RECO = 0.8TB of usable storage What about Normal Redundancy with External Backups? Disk Group Redundancy – Normal --> Double Mirroring to provide ~6TB of available storage Database Backup Location – External --> 20% of available shared storage allocated to +RECO +DATA = 4.8TB of usable storage, +RECO = 1.2TB of usable storage As a best practice, we would recommend using Normal Redundancy for your test and/or development Oracle Database Appliances and High Redundancy for production.

• The Real Value Of Certification

  I read a quote recently by Rich Hein of CIO.com "Certifications are, like most things in life: The more you put into them, the more you will get out." This is what we tell candidates all the time. The real value in obtaining a certification is the time spent preparing for the exam. All the hours spent reading books, practicing in hands-on environments, asking questions and searching for answers is valuable. It's valuable preparation for the exam, but it's also valuable preparation for your future job role and for your career. If your goal is just to pass an exam, you've missed a very important part of the value of certification.We receive so many questions through different forms of social media on whether or not certification will help candidates get jobs or get better jobs. Surveys conducted by us and by independent entities all point to the job and salary benefits of certification. However, a key part of that equation is whether a candidate can actually perform successfully in a job role. If preparation time was used to practice and learn and master new skills rather than to memorize a brain dump, the candidate will probably perform successfully in their job role, and job opportunities and higher salary will likely follow. Candidates who do not show that initiative, will not likely reap the full benefits of certification.Keep this in mind as you approach your next certification exam. You are preparing for a career, not an exam. This may help you to be more appreciative of the long hours spent studying!

• Sprinkle Some Magik on that Java Virtual Machine

  GE Energy, through its Smallworld subsidiary, has been providing geospatial software solutions to the utility and telco markets for over 20 years.  One of the fundamental building blocks of their technology is a dynamically-typed object oriented programming language called Magik.  Like Java, Magik source code is compiled down to bytecodes that run on a virtual machine -- in this case the Magik Virtual Machine. Throughout the years, GE has invested considerable engineering talent in the support and maintenance of this virtual machine.  At the same time vast energy and resources have been invested in the Java Virtual Machine. The question for GE has been whether to continue to make that investment on its own or to leverage massive effort provided by the Java community? Utilizing the Java Virtual Machine instead of maintaining its own virtual machine would give GE more opportunity to focus on application solutions.   At last count, there are dozens, perhaps hundreds of examples of programming languages that have been hosted atop the Java Virtual Machine.  Prior to the release of Java 7, that effort, although certainly possible, was generally less than optimal for languages like Magik because of its dynamic nature.  Java, as a statically typed language had little use for this capability.  In the quest to be a more universal virtual machine, Java 7, via JSR-292, introduced a new bytecode called invokedynamic.  In short, invokedynamic affords a more flexible method call mechanism needed by dynamic languages like Magik. With this new capability GE Energy has succeeded in hosting their Magik environment on top of the Java Virtual Machine.  So you may ask, why would GE wish to do such a thing?  The benefits are many: Competitors to GE Energy claimed that the Magik environment was proprietary.  By utilizing the Java Virtual Machine, that argument gets put to bed.  JVM development is done in open source, where contributions are made world-wide by all types of organizations and individuals. The unprecedented wealth of class libraries and applications written for the Java platform are now opened up to Magik/JVM platform as first class citizens. In addition, the Magik/JVM solution vastly increases the developer pool to include the 9 million Java developers -- the largest developer community on the planet. Applications running on the JVM showed substantial performance gains, in some cases as much as a 5x speed up over the original Magik platform. Legacy Magik applications can still run on the original platform.  They can be seamlessly migrated to run on the JVM by simply recompiling the source code. GE can now leverage the huge Java community.  Undeniably the best virtual machine ever created, hundreds if not thousands of world class developers continually improve, poke, prod and scrutinize all aspects of the Java platform.  As enhancements are made, GE automatically gains access to these. As Magik has little in the way of support for multi-threading, GE will benefit from current and future Java offerings (e.g. lambda expressions) that aim to further facilitate multi-core/multi-threaded application development. As the JVM is available for many more platforms, it broadens the reach of Magik, including the potential to run on a class devices never envisioned just a few short years ago.  For example, Java SE compatible runtime environments are available for popular embedded ARM/Intel/PowerPC configurations that could theoretically host this software too. As compared to other JVM language projects, the Magik integration differs in that it represents a serious commercial entity betting a sizable part of its business on the success of this effort.  Expect to see announcements not only from General Electric, but other organizations as they realize the benefits of utilizing the Java Virtual Machine.

• 50 Billion Served: Java Embedded on Devices

  It doesn't matter if it is 50 billion or 24 billion, just suffice it to stay that there will be MANY connected devices in the year 2020. With just 24 billion devices, they will outnumber humans six to one! So as a developer, you don't want to ignore this opportunity. What if you could use your Java skills and deploy an app to a fraction of these devices (don't be greedy, how about just, say, 118,000 of them)? Fareed Suliman, Java ME Product Manager had lots of good news for Java Developers in his presentation Modernizing the Explosion of Advanced Microcontrollers with Embedded Java at ARM TechCon in Santa Clara, CA last week. "A radical architecture shift is underway in this space, from proprietary to standards-based," he explained.  He pointed out several advantages to using Embedded Java for devices: Java is a proven and open standard. Java provides connectivity, encryption, location, and web services APIs. You don't have to focus on and keep reinventing the plumbing below the JVM. Abstracting the software from the hardware allows you to repeat your app across many devices. Abstracting the software from the hardware allows allows parallel development so you can get your app done more quickly. You already know Java (or you can hire lots of Java talent). Java is a full ecosystem, with Java Embedded plugins for IDEs like Eclipse and NetBeans. Java ME allows for in-field software upgrades. Suliman mentioned two ways developers can start using Java Embedded today:  Java ME Embedded Suite 7.0 Oracle Java Embedded Suite is a new packaged solution from Oracle (including Java DB, GlassFish for Embedded Suite, Jersey Web Services Framework, and Oracle Java SE Embedded 7 platform), created to provide value added services for collecting, managing, and transmitting data to embedded devices such as gateways and concentrators. Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2 Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2 is designed and optimized to meet the unique requirements of small embedded, low power devices such as micro-controllers and other resource-constrained hardware without screens or user interfaces.
