  • How do operating systems… run… without having an OS to run in?

    - by Plazmotech Binary
I'm really curious right now. I'm a Python programmer, and this question just boggled me: You write an OS. How do you run it? It has to be run somehow, and that way is within another OS? How can an application run without being in an OS? How do you tell the computer to run, say, C, and execute these commands to the screen, if it doesn't have an OS to run in? Does it have to do with a UNIX kernel? If so, what is a Unix kernel, or a kernel in general? I'm sure OSes are more complicated than that, but how does it work?

  • What best practices exist to avoid vendor lock-in?

    - by user1598390
Is there a set of community approved rules to avoid vendor lock-in? I mean something one can show to a manager or other decision maker that is easy to understand and easily verifiable. Are there some universally accepted set of rules, checklist or conditions that help detect and prevent vendor lock-in in an objective, measurable way? Have any of you warned a manager about the danger of vendor lock-in during the initial stages of a project?

  • What things to take into consideration when refactoring code?

    - by JustaPro
Code refactoring is a "disciplined technique for restructuring an existing body of code, altering its internal structure without changing its external behavior" Could anyone explain this definition? I find it kind of blurry. Which is the best technique to do it? Are these the only ones? Which are the obstacles one would meet when refactoring code? What to take into consideration when switching between IDEs? Do tools which help refactoring exist? If yes, which one would you recommend using? Any references to links where I can find out more on this subject or to books that have been written are welcomed. The questions above are for any programming language, but specific examples are appreciated. Anything that would clarify this for me is.

  • How do I restore the privacy pane of the system settings?

    - by Sparhawk
Checking out screenshots of the system settings in Ubuntu 12.10, it seems that I am missing a few. When I open up my settings, I cannot see Privacy, Backup, and Management Service. Also, nothing comes up when I search the Dash for these words. In a previous edition of Ubuntu, I purged Ubuntu One (with sudo apt-get purge ubuntuone-client python-ubuntuone-storage* ubuntuone-couch ubuntuone-installer) and appropriately, I cannot see the Ubuntu One icon. I've also previously purged unity-lens-music Perhaps I purged some metapackage that removed the others? In any case, how do I restore the privacy pane (as well as the other icons)? Also, any suggestions for what I did to remove the packages in the first place (and hence how to avoid this problem in the future)?

  • can connect to wifi router but not the internet 12.10

    - by harsh
I believe i have tried every trick in the book ! I am able to access my router from my ubuntu desktop but not even a single site on the internet. i have installed the drivers for my pci wifi card following this procedure : http://steveswinsburg.wordpress.com/2011/03/12/how-to-install-a-d-link-dwa-525-wireless-network-card-in-ubuntu-10-04/ Earlier it didn't connect to the internet and kept prompting me for the password. after i installed the driver it got connected ! but now i cant access the internet and can only access my router. i deleted the resolv.conf file. I have also tried the "rkill" command and it shows it is unlocked. I have even tried pinging the ip's 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 and i get replies from both. I have also added them on my wifi configuration setup on ubuntu desktop. I am new to ubuntu but learning fast :-) These are the things i don't like about ubuntu, the simple tasks are difficult for a person coming from windows. I am using ubuntu 12.10. please reply at the earliest i would be very thankful.

  • Machine check error on ASUS while booting from USB

    - by user100453
I put the last Ubuntu iso on my USB stick using UNetBootin, after formatting it to fat32. I've already done that before with other operating systems and it worked. I can't actually boot Ubuntu from USB since I get a black screen with the error "Machine check error" on top the an automatic reboot happens. The error appears right after the boot, I can't see anything else before. I'm using my ASUS X54L latop. Does anybody know how to solve this? Installation from CD/DVD works.

  • Facebook integration in Empathy doesn't work in 12.10

    - by skerit
The new web apps feature is fun, I've set up everything as it should be, but Empathy still doesn't connect to Facebook. When I go to the "Online-accounts" dialog and open the Empathy options dialog in the Facebook tab this shows up: Identification is blank and can't be edited Alias is blank, but can be edited A notification saying "Go online to edit your personal data" is visible I've tried logging into Facebook using my email address AND my username, both with the same results.

  • What's the difference between set, export and env and when should I use each?

    - by Oli
Every so often I'll bash out a bash script and it strikes me there are a few ways of setting a variable: key=value env key=value export key=value When you're inside a script or a single command (for instance, I'll often chain a variable with a Wine launcher to set the right Wine prefix) these seem to be completely interchangeable but surely that can't be the case. What's the difference between these three methods and can you give me an example of when I would specifically want to use each one? Definitely related to What is the difference between `VAR=...` and `export VAR=...`? but I want to know how env fits into this too, and some examples showing the benefits of each would be nice too :)

  • How to check if a Webcam is broken?

    - by user84812
I just bought an Acer Aspire 3830TG, it comes with an integrated 1.3M HD Webcam. Before buying it i tried with a bootable Lubuntu usb stick, everything worked well except for the webcam, which i thought I had to tweak. The thing is that it seems the camera should work with no problems in ubuntu. The driver is detected, I try dmesg | grep uvcvideo and the output is [ 12.226174] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device 1.3M HD WebCam (058f:b002) [ 12.245553] usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo I've also tried using different software (guvcview is black when camera output is MJPG and turns to funny colors when YU12 or YV12, cheese is always black, camorama is always with funny colors...). I should have checked that it was working properly with the default os (windows) but now it's too late for that. I even booted with a official Ubuntu Quantal distro from the usb pen, and the results are the same. so, my question is: is there any way to check that the camera is righmt or broken? So, if it's broken, at least i can go to the shop, show them that it's really broken and get an external webcam for free, or st like that. cheers. UPDATE 1 Thanks, jrp. I run sudo lsinput, and the output info about my video is the following: /dev/input/event6 bustype : BUS_USB vendor : 0x58f product : 0xb002 version : 2 name : "1.3M HD WebCam" phys : "usb-0000:00:1a.0-1.3/button" bits ev : EV_SYN EV_KEY /dev/input/event7 bustype : BUS_HOST vendor : 0x0 product : 0x6 version : 0 name : "Video Bus" phys : "LNXVIDEO/video/input0" bits ev : EV_SYN EV_KEY With this info, i'm not pretty sure about running the luvcview command. • How do I disable network connection at prelogin?

    - by ProGNOMmers
--- This question is related to Ubuntu 12.10, since previous versions did not connect to network before login --- I had a bad boot today: the Ubuntu screen was blocked at startup time, after a green [OK] and a white blinking underscore. In recovery mode I figured out the problem: NetworkManager hung trying to connect to a wireless network that wasn't available anymore, and so I couldn't reach the prelogin level. Anyway: I really don't like that the pc connects to a network before the user logging in. How is it possible to disable it?

  • How do I mount this HDD?

    - by Casval Deikun
I have a Windows HDD attached to an external docking bay on my Ubuntu System, but the HDD brings up an error message: Mounting exited with exit code 14:windows is hibernated, refused to mount. Failed to mount '/dev/sde2':Operation not permitted. The NTFS partition is hibernated. Please resume and shutdown windows properly or mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option, or mount the volume read-write with the 'remove_hiberfile' mount option. For example type in command line: mount -t ntfs-3g-o remove_hiberfile/dev/sde2/media/FE46D60C46D5C615 I am at a loss for exactly how to remove the hiberfile, or even mount it as read-only or read-write. I tried directly copy and pasting that exact command into my terminal, but it said: mount:only root can do that I do not know what to do at this point. I do need to get the information off of this drive, but I do not have a computer to put it in. Does anyone know what I should do from here?

  • External monitor is blank if I boot with the monitor plugged in

    - by Ronald
Ubuntu 12.04 has problem with Intel GM45 Chipset, featuring the the Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD I have a COMPAQ Presario CQ70 laptop with an Intel GM45 chipset that features the Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD. I was using the second HDMI video port to drive both a projector or a second monitor. Everything was working fine under Ubuntu 8.04, 9.04, 10.04 and 11.04, however, when I upgraded to 12.04 the second monitor stopped working. What I mean when I say stopped working is: boot with monitor plugged in. Blank screen! Power off, unplug monitor and power on everything works. Plug in monitor (only mode that works in Mirror mode) two monitors that look same. Close laptop lid. screen goes blank only option for useful system is power off and unplug monitor. If I attempt to Adjust the monitor to maximum resolution that the monitor will handle and turn off mirror mode nothing can be moved onto that screen. This all worked fine with earlier versions of Ubuntu, is there a notes about the changes to the graphics management system in 12.04, like there is for the resolver change?

  • How do I restore the original color scheme, icons, and theme?

    - by katya sehgal
I'd like the original colour scheme, icon style of 12.04. I somehow lost the Ambiance theme (possible error or upgrade error). I re-installed 'light-themes' from the terminal and got it back. But the panel on the top that shows the options of sound, battery and wi-fi has changed and I can-not get the original setting back. In the windows, the close, minimize tools have shifted to the right instead of the original left side. I had installed MyUnity and Ubuntu Tweak but deleted them. As such, I want the original setting back. Kindly help me with the commands. I have searched for solutions; there are multiple and I need to be sure if I should follow the same. Kindly bear before marking duplicate. Discoveries: The appearance is gray and boxy as outlined here. Not sure same problem. Similar 'gray and boxy' article here. Desktop forgets theme. I have also tried the unity --reset command. It never completes. I gave it 20 minutes.

  • how to install gerix on ubuntu 12.04 using backtrack repositories?

    - by werever
I got instructions from here, and I found several sites with similar instructions but somethig is wrong with the repositories on 12.04. This should work for 11.10 and previous versions. Any ideas how to install backtrack repos and some back track apps on 12.04? I read about downloading the .deb package for gerix and manually making the same folder structure that gerix uses on backtrack, then manually run the python script, but this way didn't work for me either. How can I get gerix installed and working on my Ubuntu 12.04 system?

  • 2-d lighting day/night cycle

    - by Richard
Off the back of this post in which I asked two questions and received one answer, which I accepted as a valid answer. I have decided to re-ask the outstanding question. I have implemented light points with shadow casting as shown here but I would like an overall map light with no point/light source. The map setup is a top-down 2-d 50X50 pixel grid. How would I go about implementing a day/night cycle lighting across a map?

  • Client Side Prediction

    - by user13842
I have a question regarding Client Side prediction. Ive tried to search topics about my specific problem but couldn't find anything which really answered my problem. Most tutorials and explanations assume that the Client sends messages like "Move my player up by 1 Position", but what if i send messages like "Set my player's velocity to x"? Since it's hard to explain with text, i made a graphic explaining my problem. The main problem is, that the player sets his own velocity, due to Client Side Prediction, earlier than the Server. So if 2 different velocities overlap, the Server would get out of sync. How can i tackle that problem? Thanks a lot. Graphic: http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/6083/clientpred.png (Ignore the 5.5cm)

  • How to move a directional light according to the camera movement?

    - by Andrea Benedetti
Given a light direction, how can I move it according to the camera movement, in a shader? Think that an artist has setup a scene (e.g., in 3DSMax) with a mesh in center of that and a directional light with a position and a target. From this position and target I've calculated the light direction. Now I want to use the same direction in my lighting equation but, obviously, I want that this light moves correctly with the camera. Thanks.

  • What are some good resources for creating a game engine in XNA?

    - by Glasser
I'm currently a student game programmer working on an indie project. We have a team of eleven people (five programmers, four artists, and two audio designers) aboard, all working hard to help design this game. We've been meeting for months now and so far we have a pretty buffed out Game Design Document as well as much audio/visual concept art. Our programmers are itching to progress on our own end. Each person in our programming team is well versed in C++, but is very familiar with C#. We have enough experience and skill that we're confident that we will be successful with our game, and we're looking to build our own game engine in XNA as it seems like it would be worth our time and effort in the end. The game itself will be a 2D beat 'em up style game to be released over xbox live and the PC. It's play style will be similar to that of Castle Crashers or Scott Pilgrim vs The World. We want to design the game engine to allow us to better implement our assets into the game as well as to simplify the creation of design elements/mechanics. Currently between our programmers, we have books such as "XNA 4.0" and "Game Coding Complete, Third Edition," but we'd still like more information on both XNA and (especially) building a game engine from scratch. What are any other good books, websites, or resources we could use to further map out and program our game engine?

  • getting incorrect error even if the condition is fulfilled

I am trying to show the message based on the text shown on webpage after a particular action. If the webpage contains text MESSAGE HAS BEEN SUBMITTED SUCCESSFULLY, I want to print Message sent successfully on the screen otherwise MESSAGE SENDING FAILED. Can anyone tell me where am i going wrong?

  • How to customize OOTB workflow emails

    - by Jeff
How can I make simple format-type customizations to ALL OOTB workflow related emails? I have found that many pre-Sharepoint 2010 posts indicated that OOTB workflow emails are in fact 'alerts', and therefore OOTB workflow emails could be customized using the same technique which is: making a customized version of alerttemplates.xml and even using IAlertNotifyHandler to intercept all alert emails. However, it seems that OOTB workflow and workflow task emails are not affected by changes to my customalerttemplates.xml file (which I do follow with stsadm updatealerttemplates, iisreset, and timer service restart). This is what I used as a guide to customize alerts: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sharepointdeveloperdocs/archive/2007/12/14/how-to-customizing-alert-emails-using-ialertnotificationhandler.aspx What am I missing? Is there a separate template for workflow emails? Can OOTB workflow emails be customized? Thanks! Jeff

Basically, on IE-8 if you have an event handler function which captures the event object in a closure, the event "type" property seems to become invalidated from within the closure. Here's a simple code snippet which reproduces the error: <html> <head> <script type = "text/javascript"> function handleClickEvent(ev) { ev = (ev || window.event); alert(ev.type); window.setTimeout(function() { alert(ev.type); // Causes error on IE-8 }, 20); } function foo() { var query = document.getElementById("query"); query.onclick = handleClickEvent; } </script> </head> <body> <input id = "query" type = "submit"> <script type = "text/javascript"> foo(); </script> </body> </html> So basically, what happens here is that within the handleClickEvent function, we have the event object ev. We call alert(ev.type) and we see the event type is "click". So far, so good. But then when we capture the event object in a closure, and then call alert(ev.type) again from within the closure, now all of a sudden Internet Explorer 8 errors, saying "Member not found" because of the expression ev.type. It seems as though the type property of the event object is mysteriously gone after we capture the event object in a closure. I tested this code snippet on Firefox, Safari and Chrome, and none of them report an error condition. But in IE-8, the event object seems to become somehow invalidated after it's captured in the closure. Question: Why is this happening in IE-8, and is there any workaround?

  • ASP: Assigning CSS to dynamically created Label in C#

    - by Tucker
    I'm trying to figure out how to apply CSS to a Label created in C#. Everything compiles and runs, it just doesn't seem to be applying the CSS. The CSS is in the file linked to in the site master page. Everything else in the CSS file is being applied as it should be. Codebehind: ... Label label = new Label(); SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand("SELECT Q_Text FROM HRA.dbo.Questions WHERE QID = 1"); command.Connection = connection; reader = command.ExecuteReader(); reader.Read(); label.Text = reader["Q_Text"].ToString(); label.ID = "rblabel"; label.CssClass = "rblabel"; reader.Close(); ... ASP: <asp:Content runat="server" ID="BodyContent" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent"> <asp:PlaceHolder ID="holder" runat="server"> </asp:PlaceHolder> </asp:Content> CSS: .rblabel { text-align:left; padding-left: 2em; font-size: 4em; }

  • Split a string and join it back together in a different order?

    - by Xaisoft
    What is the most concise, yet readable way to split a string and put join it back together in a different order. For example, I want to split the following string: 10-20-30-4000-50000 and I would do this via: string[] tokens = original.Split('-'); and now I want to put it back together in this order: 30-20-10-4000-50000 I know I can use Join to put it back together in it's original form, but I don't want that. The only thing I can think of right now is: string modified = string.Format("{0}{1}{2}{3}{4}",tokens[2],tokens[1],tokens[0],tokens[3], tokens[4]); I realized that if I do: string modified = string.Format("{2}{1}{0}{3}{4}", tokens); it does not keep the dashes which is what I want so is to do that, should I just do: string modified = string.Format("{2}-{1}-{0}-{3}-{4}", tokens);
