  • Careers in Computer Security? [closed]

    I have the opportunity to go back for MSCS and the closest college's main research is in computer security and forensics. I've always been interested in computer networks and security but I have no interest whatsoever to run cables or add users to the network( which is what the network people do where I currently work ). I wanted to know how may I find out the types of day to day task a computer security expert does? I don't mean the jobs you find on dice or indeed. I'm talking about the type of careers that start out at the NSA or DIA. Also, I'm wondering what the pay is like for these types of fields? Thanks to all that reply.

  • Scanning website for vulnerablities

    I have found that the local school's website installed a Perl Calendar - this was years ago, it has not been used for ages, but Google has it indexed (which is how I found it) and it full of Viagra links and the like ... program was by Matt Kruse, here is details of the exploit: http://www.securiteam.com/exploits/5IP040A1QI.html I've got the school to remove that, but I think they also have MySQL installed and I'm aware that out-of-the-box there have been some exploits of Admin Tools / Login in old versions. For all I know they also have PHPBB and the like installed ... The school is just using some cheap, shared hosting; the HTTP response header I get is: Apache/1.3.29 (Unix) (Red-Hat/Linux) Chili!Soft-ASP/3.6.2 mod_ssl/2.8.14 OpenSSL/0.9.6b PHP/4.4.9 FrontPage/5.0.2.2510 I'm looking for some means of checking if they have other junk installed (quite possibly from way back, and now unused) that might put the site at risk. I'm more interested in something that can scan for things like the MySQL Admin exploit rather than open ports etc. My guess is that they have little control over the hosting space that they have - but I'm a Windows DEV, so this *nix stuff is all Greek to me. I found http://www.beyondsecurity.com/ which looks like it might do what I want (within their evaluation :) ) but I have a worry about how to find out if they are well known / honest - otherwise I will be tipping them a wink with a Domain Name that may be at risk!   • Can't ping guest OS from Windows XP SP3 host running VIC.

    Hi, I am running VMware ESX Server 3i Version 3.5.0 and accessing this server using VMware Infrastructure Client Version 2.5.0 on a Windows XP SP3 machine. I have enabled the Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 stack and assigned an IPv6 address (using the netsh command) to the network adapter. The guest OS'es running on ESX Server (includes Win7, W2K8, WinXP) also have IPv6 addresses enabled on their adapters. The adapters are configured to be in VM Network (Bridged mode) and hence have connectivity to the Internet. The VMs are able to ping each other using IPv6 addresses and are also able to ping a physical Win7 machine using IPv6 addresses. However, the Windows XP SP3 machine on which the Client is running is not able to ping any hosts running on ESX Server while the VMs are able to ping this host. Whenever I try to ping from WXP box I get the "Invalid source route specified." error. The WinXP machine is not able to ping the Win7 physical machine too (the same error as above is thrown). Can someone help me understand why I am receiving this error and what I need to do to resolve this error? Thanks, Vittal

  • Incremental backup services with change only charges?

    I'm looking for online backup services that provide incremental, change-only backups. I'm looking to transfer as little data as possible and would like to find a service that provides full backups every week along with incremental backups every day. Are there any specialist companies that deal with this or do I just use standard backup ones? Any recommendation appreciated. To expand on this Im looking for software/services which work on Unix. I guess Linux is fine aswell as FreeBSDs Linux compatibility layer should run it. Oh and command line would be ideal and not require the use of X Window. Thanks.

  • strange behaviour - dhclient needs to be run twice in order to connect to wireless

    I am trying to connect my to my wlan without the use of NetworkManager. I run the following commands after boot: iwconfig wlan0 enc <WEP passwd> mode managed essid <name> channel 6 ifconfig wlan0 up dhclient wlan0 At this point, dhclient stalls for ages (perhaps 2 minutes), then it returns with PING 192.168.1.254 (192.168.1.254) from 192.168.1.65 wlan0: 56(84) bytes of data. --- 192.168.1.254 ping statistics --- 3 packets transmitted, 0 received, +3 errors, 100% packet loss, time 3000ms pipe 3 .. The strange thing is that when I run pkill dhclient; dhclient wlan0 right after this, it connects in about <3 seconds. Any idea what could be the cause of this problem? Edit: oh, and I did try using the -timeout flag on dhclient but that didn't seem to make any difference (it still stalled for ages).

  • MSBuild's XmlMassUpdate task in NAnt?

    I have created an MSBuild tasks for building my projects, but for various reasons I wan't to switch to NAnt. Is there some task that would be equivalent to MSBuild's XmlMassUpdate in NAnt? If possible I would like to use the same xml replacement file I used with XmlMassUpdate. (for more info about XmlMassUpdate, here's a short usage I found on stackoverflow's site: MSBuild example) I tried with xmlPeek/xmlPoke tasks but couldn't get them to iterate a tree paths in a replacement file...

  • Async.Parallel or Array.Parallel.Map ?

    Hello- I'm trying to implement a pattern I read from Don Syme's blog (http://blogs.msdn.com/dsyme/archive/2010/01/09/async-and-parallel-design-patterns-in-f-parallelizing-cpu-and-i-o-computations.aspx) which suggests that there are opportunities for massive performance improvements from leveraging asynchronous I/O. I am currently trying to take a piece of code that "works" one way, using Array.Parallel.Map, and see if I can somehow achieve the same result using Async.Parallel, but I really don't understand Async.Parallel, and cannot get anything to work. I have a piece of code (simplified below to illustrate the point) that successfully retrieves an array of data for one cusip. (A price series, for example) let getStockData cusip = let D = DataProvider() let arr = D.GetPriceSeries(cusip) return arr let data = Array.Parallel.map (fun x -> getStockData x) stockCusips So this approach contructs an array of arrays, by making a connection over the internet to my data vendor for each stock (which could be as many as 3000) and returns me an array of arrays (1 per stock, with a price series for each one). I admittedly don't understand what goes on underneath Array.Parallel.map, but am wondering if this is a scenario where there are resources wasted under the hood, and it actually could be faster using asynchronous I/O? So to test this out, I have attempted to make this function using asyncs, and I think that the function below follows the pattern in Don Syme's article using the URLs, but it won't compile with "let!". let getStockDataAsync cusip = async { let D = DataProvider() let! arr = D.GetData(cusip) return arr } The error I get is: This expression was expected to have type Async<'a but here has type obj It compiles fine with "let" instead of "let!", but I had thought the whole point was that you need the exclamation point in order for the command to run without blocking a thread. So the first question really is, what's wrong with my syntax above, in getStockDataAsync, and then at a higher level, can anyone offer some additional insight about asychronous I/O and whether the scenario I have presented would benefit from it, making it potentially much, much faster than Array.Parallel.map?   • Does this type of function or technique have a name?

    HI there, I'm slightly new to programming, more of a hobby. I am wondering if a the following logic or technique has a specific name, or term. My current project has 7 check boxes, one for each day of the week. I needed an easy to save which boxes were checked. The following is the method to saved the checked boxes to a single number. Each checkbox gets a value that is double from the last check box. I know this is annoying and we could do it with a framework or a library like jquery but i realize it with ajax. Also i have problems with jquery and jsp\servlet since i must use a JSON SERVICE. Why it seems to me that is so complicated.

  • Using string.Format for simple things?

    In my early .Net programming days, I used string.Format() only for complex string concatenations, for example to compile strings as Problem with customer order 234 of date 2/2/2002 and payment id 55543. But now I use string.Format for almost every string concatenation I have to do, also simple ones such as prefixing a string with something. Console.WriteLine(string.Format("\t\t{0}", myString)); Is there any possible overhead on this? Maybe I should use the regular + operator to do these simple operations? What's your opinion on this?

  • Custom stream wrappers, what could they be useful for in web applications?

    I suppose the concept is language agnostic, but I don't know what it's called in other languages. In PHP they're Stream Wrappers. In short, a wrapper class that allows manipulation of a streamable resource (resource that can be read to/written to/seek into, such as a file, a db, an url). For example, in a template engine (a view), upon including a template file such as: include "view.wrapper://path/to/my/template/file.phtml"; my custom wrapper, declared elsewhere and associated with "view.wrapper", would first intercepts the file to replace such things as short tags (<?=) with a more verbose counterpart (<?php echo). This allows developers to use short tags in views, even if the server isn't set to allow it. It can also be applied to the preprocessing of views pseudo syntax such as {@myVar} (e.g. replacing it with $this->myVar). This is only one application of custom stream wrappers, but the feature seems powerful enough to make me think that there are others that could make life a lot simpler for developers. What have you built, or thought about building, custom stream wrappers for? where have you seen some interesting implementations? I'm particularly interested in their applications in web development.

  • write.table in R screws up header when has rownames

    Hello, check this example: > a = matrix(1:9, nrow = 3, ncol = 3, dimnames = list(LETTERS[1:3], LETTERS[1:3])) > a A B C A 1 4 7 B 2 5 8 C 3 6 9 the table displays correctly. There are two different ways of writing it to file... write.csv(a, 'a.csv') which gives as expected: "","A","B","C" "A",1,4,7 "B",2,5,8 "C",3,6,9 and write.table(a, 'a.txt') which screws up "A" "B" "C" "A" 1 4 7 "B" 2 5 8 "C" 3 6 9 indeed, an empty tab is missing.... which is a pain in the butt for downstream things. Is this a bug or a feature? Is there a workaround? (other than write.table(cbind(rownames(a), a), 'a.txt', row.names=FALSE) Cheers, yannick

  • Google App Engine on Google Apps Domain

    I'm having trouble getting my domain pointed to my website hosted with google app engine. Here's the background... take care to separate the concepts of "google apps" (domain hosting, email, etc.) and "google app engine" (website framework). I have a domain that's using Google Apps for Your Domain, let's call it company.com. So my login for my google apps account is [email protected]. I have a different domain that is aliased back to my google apps account, let's call it mycompany.com. It's been successfully aliased and registered with my primary google apps account using the cname method, and has updated mx records. We have a ton of domains, and I only want to use one "google apps" account to maintain them all. Now I have a website I've built using google app engine, and the url is effectively mycompany.appspot.com. I want to get mycompany.com to point to my website that currently resides at mycompany.appspot.com. There's a spot in the google app engine dashboard under application settings where you can add a domain. So I click there and enter mycompany.com and I get an error message saying that domain is not using google apps. If I back up to the page I submitted, there's a note saying I need to register the domain with google apps. So I click the link to do that and enter mycompany.com and I get an error message saying the domain has been registered and is in the process of ownership verification. But that process is already finished. So... what do I do? Does google app engine not support a domain that is only aliased to a primary google apps account? Does mycompany.com need to have its own primary google apps account?

    I would like to create a page where all images which reside on my website are listed with title and alternative representation. I already wrote me a little program to find and load all html files, but now I am stuck at how to extract src, title and alt from the html < img src="/image/fluffybunny.jpg" title="Harvey the bunny" alt="a cute little fluffy bunny"/ I guess this should be done with some regex, but since the order of the tags may vary, and I need all of them, I don't really know how to parse this in an elegant way (I could do it the hard char by char way, but thats painful).

  • hashing password giving different results

    I am taking over a system that a previous developer wrote. The system has an administrator approve a user account and when they do that the system uses the following method to hash a password and save it to the database. It sends the unhashed password to the user. When the user logs in the system uses the exact same method to hash what the user enters and compares it to the database value. We've run into a couple of times when the database entry doesn't match the user's entry whey they should. So it appears that the method isn't always hashing the value the same. Does anyone know if this method of hashing isn't reliable and how to make it reliable?   • C# - Google like query engine.-

    Guys; Hope you are fine. I have to make a Web Project (very simple) I will have a DB with 2 tables. One table has 2 fields. From the WebPage I need a Google like search query, for example I have Movie Title and Movie Review on the Table. I need to be able to search those 2 fields like this: "Best Movie" + Action I will need to make a query to the DB to search for the "Best Movie" string togheter plus optional ACTION word on 2 fields of the table. Am I clear??? :) Does somebody know if this has already been made, and if it´s public and free and where to get it :) Thanks in advanced EDIT: My concern is to translate the Google like Symbols ("", +, -, ~) to build a valid query.
