  • Podcast: Dell Perot Systems Relies on Oracle In-Memory Database Cache

    Recently we spoke with Bill Binko, Technology Consultant at Dell Perot Systems, about a high volume web-based content delivery system they implemented for a client with Oracle In-Memory Database Cache. Their client needed to respond to ~1 billion hits (web requests) per day, but hadn't been able to support this load. Oracle In-Memory Database Cache allowed for multiple & complicated queries to take place without ever hitting the disk...providing sub-millisecond response time and ability to manage much higher high volumes of data. Old System: Old SQL Server Database, over 300 servers, difficult to maintain. New System: One Oracle Database 11g instance, multiple Oracle RAC nodes, backed up by Oracle Data Guard, and Oracle In-Memory Database Cache to cut query response times by 10x.   • How to keep windows from paging block of memory

    We are working on a Vista/Windows 7 applicaiton that will be running in 64 bit mode using VS2008/C++. We will be needing to cache hundreds of 2-3 mb blobs of data in RAM for performance reasons up to some memory limit. Our usage profile is such that we cannot read the data in fast enough if it is all on the the disk. Cached Memory usage will be larger than 1gb memory used. For this to work well, we need to ensure that Windows does not page this memory out as it will defeat the purpose of why we are doing this. I've done a fair amount of research and cannot find documenation that states exactly how to do this. I've seen several references that infer memory mapped files work this way. Is there an expert who can clarify this for me? I'm aware there are other programs that we could adapt to do this, for example, splitting the blobs and loading into memcache or inmemory databases, but they all have too many problems with performance or code complexity. Suggestions?

  • Simple Data Caching using Weak References in WCF

    Given that I have the following WCF service: class LookUpService { public List<County> GetCounties(string state) { var db = new LookUpRepository(); return db.GetCounties(state); } } class County { public string StateCode{get;set;} public string CountyName{get;set;} public int CountyCode{get;set;} } What will be the most efficient (or best) way to cache a state's counties using weak references (or any other approach) so that we don't hit the database every time we need to look up data. Note that we will not have access to the HttpRuntime (and HttpContext).

  • What is Jquery's alternative to Mootools MochaUI?

    MochaUI is very intuitive and the modal iframes almost perfectly replicate Windows. Unfortunately, I have scripts written in Jquery that I use, and I hear there are conflicts when putting both Mootools and Jquery on one html file (is this true?). How can I get the MochaUI features in Jquery? At the very least, is there a similar modal dialog system? I've seen JqueryUI Dialog but it makes the background go dark and nonfunctional, which is not what I am looking for.

  • R: How to plot a vector, grouped by a factor

    In R, given a vector casp6 <- c(0.9478638, 0.7477657, 0.9742675, 0.9008372, 0.4873001, 0.5097587, 0.6476510, 0.4552577, 0.5578296, 0.5728478, 0.1927945, 0.2624068, 0.2732615) and a factor: trans.factor <- factor (rep (c("t0", "t12", "t24", "t72"), c(4,3,3,3))) I want to create a plot where the data points are grouped as defined by the factor. So the categories should be on the x-axis, values in the same category should have the same x coordinate. Simply doing plot(trans.factor, casp6) does almost what I want, it produces a boxplot, but I want to see the individual data points.

  • How can I replace this semaphore with a monitor?

    Hi In previous question of mine, someone had meantioned that using Semaphores were expensive in C# compared to using a monitor. So I ask this, how can I replace the semaphore in this code with a monitor? I need function1 to return its value after function2 (in a separate thread) has been completed. I had replaced the Semaphore.WaitOne with a Monitor.Wait and the Semaphore.Release with a Monitor.PulseAll but the PulseAll was being triggered before the Wait causing the program to hang. Any idea how to avoid that race condition?   • ASP.NET MVC Route Contraints with {ID}-{Slug} Format

    I have a route like following, ideally I would like it to match: domain.com/layout/1-slug-is-the-name-of-the-page routes.MapRoute( "Layout", // Route name "layout/{id}-{slug}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = @"\d+$" } ); But when I hit the url, I am keep on getting this exception: The parameters dictionary contains a null entry for parameter 'id' of non-nullable type 'System.Int32' for method 'System.Web.Mvc.ActionResult Index(Int32)' in .... The above route will match the following though: domain.com/layout/1-slug or domain.com/layout/1-slug_permalink Seems like the hyphen that separates the ID from the Slug is causing issues.

  • Re-using aggregate level formulas in SQL - any good tactics?

    Imagine this case, but with a lot more component buckets and a lot more intermediates and outputs. This results in code duplication. I have thought of using UDFs (either scalar or table valued with an OUTER APPLY, since many of the final results may share intermediates which have to be calculated at the aggregate level), but in my experience the scalar and multi-statement table-valued UDFs perform very poorly. Also thought about using more dynamic SQL and applying the formulas by name, basically. Any other tricks, techniques or tactics to keeping these kinds of formulae which need to be applied at different levels in sync and/or organized?

  • groovyx.net.ws.WSClient is having problems with ''soapenc:Array' Any workaround?

    I'm trying to call a webservice (implemented with a .NET/ASP system) from groovy/grails using WSClient. I have no trouble accessing this service using the SOAPClient debugger (Todd Ditchendorf's program for OSX), but when i try it via groovy/grails, I get the error undefined simple or complex type 'soapenc:Array' Is there any solution? Looking at it with wireshark: It seems to have thrown this error even before it gets a chance to perform the transaction. The error is thrown right after WSClient has downloaded the second of two schemas referenced in he WSDL.

  • Why does "non exists" SQL query work and "not in" doesn't

    I spent some time trying to figure out why this query isn't pulling the results i expected: SELECT * FROM NGS WHERE ESPSSN NOT IN (SELECT SSN FROM CENSUS) finally i tried writing the query another way and this ended up getting the expected results: SELECT * FROM NGS n WHERE NOT EXISTS (SELECT * FROM CENSUS WHERE SSN = n.ESPSSN) The first query seems more appropriate and "correct". I use "in" and "not in" all the time for similar selects and have never had a problem that i know of.

  • Excel Data Organization: Array Formulas? Tables? Named Range?

    I'm trying to make a huge Excel sheet reasonably maintainable, but it's huge in the "hundred-table-db" direction, rather than the "hundred-thousand-row-table" direction. I want to have a baseline data table that looks something like this: | Indicator | Units | 2010 | 2015 | 2020 | 2025 | Source | | GDP | $Gazillion | 300 | 350 | 400 | 450 | BLS | | Population | Millions | 350 | 400 | 450 | 500 | Census | | PetMonkeyPopulation | Thousands | 50 | 60 | 70 | 80 | SimiansRUs | And then be able to have another sheet that looks like: | | 2010 | 2015 | 2020 | 2025 | | MonkeysPerCapita | .1 | .2 | .3 | .4 | | MonkeysPerDollar | .01 | .01 | .01 | .01 | | GDPPerCapita | 300 | 400 | 450 | 600 | Is there some standard way to make this kind of thing maintainable?

  • Is it a good idea to create an STL iterator which is noncopyable?

    Most of the time, STL iterators are CopyConstructable, because several STL algorithms require this to improve performance, such as std::sort. However, I've been working on a pet project to wrap the FindXFile API (previously asked about), but the problem is it's impossible to implement a copyable iterator around this API. A find handle cannot be duplicated by any means -- DuplicateHandle specifically forbids passing handles to it. And if you just maintain a reference count to the find handle, then a single increment by any copy results in an increment of all copies -- clearly that is not what a copy constructed iterator is supposed to do. Since I can't satisfy the traditional copy constructible requirement for iterators here, is it even worth trying to create an "STL style" iterator? On one hand, creating some other enumeration method is going to not fall into normal STL conventions, but on the other, following STL conventions are going to confuse users of this iterator if they try to CopyConstruct it later. Which is the lesser of two evils?

  • Need help displaying a dynamic table

    I am designing a job rota planner for a company and need help displaying a dynamic table containing the staff details. I have the following tables in MySQL database: Staff, Event, and Job. The staff table holds staff details (staffed, name, address...etc), the Event table (eventide, eventName, Fromdate, Todate...etc) and the Job table holds (Jobid, Jobdate, Eventid(fk), Staffid (fk)). I need to dynamically display the available staff list from the staff table when the user selects the EVENT and the DATE (3 drop downs: date, month, and year) from a PHP form. I need to display staff members that have not been assigned work on the selected date by checking the Jobdate in the Job table. I have been at this for all day and can't get around it. I am still learning PHP and would surely appreciate any help I can get.   • WCF - Multiple schema HTTP and HTTPS in the same service

    I am trying to set up WCF service in production. The service has two bindings with two different interfaces. One endpoint (basicHttpBinding) is set up at HTTP and the other endpoint (wsHttpBinding) is set up securely over SSL. I can't get this scenario to work. Everything works with no problem if both endpoints are set up over HTTP. Before I even get into the specifics of errors I get, is is possible to run secure and insecure endpoint over the same service ?
