  • REST to Objects in C#

    RESTful interfaces for web services are all the rage for many Web 2.0 sites.  If you want to consume these in a very simple fashion, LINQ to XML can do the job pretty easily in C#.  If you go searching for help on this, youll find a lot of incomplete solutions and fairly large toolkits and frameworks (guess how I know this) this quick article is meant to be a no fluff just stuff approach to making this work. POCO Objects Lets assume you have a Model that you want to suck data into from a RESTful web service.  Ideally this is a Plain Old CLR Object, meaning it isnt infected with any persistence or serialization goop.  It might look something like this: public class Entry { public int Id; public int UserId; public DateTime Date; public float Hours; public string Notes; public bool Billable;   public override string ToString() { return String.Format("[{0}] User: {1} Date: {2} Hours: {3} Notes: {4} Billable {5}", Id, UserId, Date, Hours, Notes, Billable); } } Not that this isnt a completely trivial object.  Lets look at the API for the service.  RESTful HTTP Service In this case, its TickSpots API, with the following sample output: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <entries type="array"> <entry> <id type="integer">24</id> <task_id type="integer">14</task_id> <user_id type="integer">3</user_id> <date type="date">2008-03-08</date> <hours type="float">1.00</hours> <notes>Had trouble with tribbles.</notes> <billable>true</billable> # Billable is an attribute inherited from the task <billed>true</billed> # Billed is an attribute to track whether the entry has been invoiced <created_at type="datetime">Tue, 07 Oct 2008 14:46:16 -0400</created_at> <updated_at type="datetime">Tue, 07 Oct 2008 14:46:16 -0400</updated_at> # The following attributes are derived and provided for informational purposes: <user_email>[email protected]</user_email> <task_name>Remove converter assembly</task_name> <sum_hours type="float">2.00</sum_hours> <budget type="float">10.00</budget> <project_name>Realign dilithium crystals</project_name> <client_name>Starfleet Command</client_name> </entry> </entries> Im assuming in this case that I dont necessarily care about all of the data fields the service is returning I just need some of them for my applications purposes.  Thus, you can see there are more elements in the <entry> XML than I have in my Entry class. Get The XML with C# The next step is to get the XML.  The following snippet does the heavy lifting once you pass it the appropriate URL: protected XElement GetResponse(string uri) { var request = WebRequest.Create(uri) as HttpWebRequest; request.UserAgent = ".NET Sample"; request.KeepAlive = false;   request.Timeout = 15 * 1000;   var response = request.GetResponse() as HttpWebResponse;   if (request.HaveResponse == true && response != null) { var reader = new StreamReader(response.GetResponseStream()); return XElement.Parse(reader.ReadToEnd()); } throw new Exception("Error fetching data."); } This is adapted from the Yahoo Developer article on Web Service REST calls.  Once you have the XML, the last step is to get the data back as your POCO. Use LINQ-To-XML to Deserialize POCOs from XML This is done via the following code: public IEnumerable<Entry> List(DateTime startDate, DateTime endDate) { string additionalParameters = String.Format("start_date={0}&end_date={1}", startDate.ToShortDateString(), endDate.ToShortDateString()); string uri = BuildUrl("entries", additionalParameters);   XElement elements = GetResponse(uri);   var entries = from e in elements.Elements() where e.Name.LocalName == "entry" select new Entry { Id = int.Parse(e.Element("id").Value), UserId = int.Parse(e.Element("user_id").Value), Date = DateTime.Parse(e.Element("date").Value), Hours = float.Parse(e.Element("hours").Value), Notes = e.Element("notes").Value, Billable = bool.Parse(e.Element("billable").Value) }; return entries; }   For completeness, heres the BuildUrl method for my TickSpot API wrapper: // Change these to your settings protected const string projectDomain = "DOMAIN.tickspot.com"; private const string authParams = "[email protected]&password=MyTickSpotPassword";   protected string BuildUrl(string apiMethod, string additionalParams) { if (projectDomain.Contains("DOMAIN")) { throw new ApplicationException("You must update your domain in ProjectRepository.cs."); } if (authParams.Contains("MyTickSpotPassword")) { throw new ApplicationException("You must update your email and password in ProjectRepository.cs."); } return string.Format("https://{0}/api/{1}?{2}&{3}", projectDomain, apiMethod, authParams, additionalParams); } Thats it!  Now go forth and consume XML and map it to classes you actually want to work with.  Have fun! • IMAP can't access virtual account sharing name with local user account

    - by chernevik
    I am setting up a postfix/dovecot mail server with virtual accounts, per the Chris Haas tutorial. I'm finding that virtual users who also have local user accounts on the mail server cannot access their email remotely via IMAP. They're told they cannot login. (I'm using Thunderbird for that). These same users can login when emulating IMAP locally via telnet. Virtual users without local accounts have no trouble with IMAP access from remote clients. These local user accounts have vestiges of prior efforts in their home directories: mbox files, Mail and mail directories. I've looked at the logs for clues to where the remote login process is failing (dovecot authentication failure? confusion over where emails are stored?) but found nothing helpful. I haven't found much in the dovecot or postfix documentation that describes the IMAP login process and expectations in enough detail to help me diagnose this. So: how do I go about identifying the problem and researching a solution?

  • log4net configuration problem

    - by user177883
    I have a seperate Log4Net.config file. I added [assembly: log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator(ConfigFile = "Log4Net.config", Watch = true)] to AssemblyInfo.cs When I run the application with debug mode, lognet is logging. When i publish the application to IIS, lognet is not logging anything. I have the followings also : BasicConfigurator.Configure(); // in a method private static readonly ILog _logger = LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(_Default)); // for the instance What would be the reason for this?

  • (PHP) SHA1 vs md5 vs SHA256: which to use for a PHP login?

    - by hatorade
    I'm making a php login, and I'm trying to decide whether to use SHA1 or Md5, or SHA256 which I read about in another stackoverflow article. Are any of them more secure than others? For SHA1/256, do I still use a salt? Also, is this a secure way to store the password as a hash in mysql? function createSalt() { $string = md5(uniqid(rand(), true)); return substr($string, 0, 3); } $salt = createSalt(); $hash = sha1($salt . $hash);

  • Export to Excel in Asp.net MVC

    - by BigJoe714
    I am working on an ASP.NET MVC application where I need to export data to an excel spreadsheet. Previously, in webforms apps, I used some code I found to render a GridView as an excel-compatible file. This was quite handy. I was wondering what the quickest/most effective method would be to do this in MVC. Thanks.

  • NullReferenceExeption when reading from a file

    - by Whitey
    I need to read a file structured like this: 01000 00030 00500 03000 00020 And put it in an array like this: int[,] iMap = new int[iMapHeight, iMapWidth] { {0, 1, 0, 0, 0}, {0, 0, 0, 3, 0}, {0, 0, 5, 0, 0}, {0, 3, 0, 0, 0}, {0, 0, 0, 2, 0}, }; Hopefully you see what I'm trying to do here. I was confused how to do this so I asked here on SO, but the code I got from it gets this error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. I'm pretty new to this so I have no idea how to fix it... I only barely know the code: protected void ReadMap(string mapPath) { using (var reader = new StreamReader(mapPath)) { for (int i = 0; i < iMapHeight; i++) { string line = reader.ReadLine(); for (int j = 0; j < iMapWidth; j++) { iMap[i, j] = (int)(line[j] - '0'); } } } } The line I get the error on is this: iMap[i, j] = (int)(line[j] - '0'); Can anyone provide a solution? Thank you. :)

  • Key Events in TabActivities?

    - by stormin986
    I have a TabActivity and want to catch and handle presses of HOME and BACK. Where do I need to catch these events? In my subclass of TabActivity I implement the following: @Override public boolean onKeyDown(int keyCode, KeyEvent event) { switch (keyCode) { // Code handling } return super.onKeyDown(keyCode, event); } Didn't work. So I placed a breakpoint on the switch statement line. But this function never gets called, whether I press volume up/down, menu, home, or back. Where do I need to catch these KeyEvents?

  • Show users a list of unique items on Java Google App Engine

    - by James
    I've been going round in circles with what must be a very simple challenge but I want to do it the most efficient way from the start. So, I've watched Brett Slatkin's Google IO videos (2008 & 2009) about building scalable apps including http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgaL6NGpkB8 and read the docs but as a n00b, I'm still not sure. I'm trying to build an app on GAEJ similar to the original 'hotornot' where a user is presented with an item which they rate. Once they rate it, they are presented with another one which they haven't seen before. My question is this; is it most efficient to do a query up front to grab x items (say 100) and put them in a list (stored in memcache?) or is it better to simply make a query for a new item after each rating. To keep track of the items a user has seen, I'm planning to keep those items' keys in a list property of the user's entity. Does that sound sensible? I've really got myself confused about this so any help would be much appreciated.

  • How can i do this using a Python Regex?

    - by uberjumper
    I am trying to properly extract methods definitions that are generated by comtypes for Com Interfaces using a regex. Furthermore some of them are blank which causes even more problems for me. Basically i have this: IXMLSerializerAlt._methods_ = [ COMMETHOD([helpstring(u'Loads an object from an XML string.')], HRESULT, 'LoadFromString', ( ['in'], BSTR, 'XML' ), ( ['in'], BSTR, 'TypeName' ), ( ['in'], BSTR, 'TypeNamespaceURI' ), ( ['retval', 'out'], POINTER(POINTER(IUnknown)), 'obj' )), ] class EnvironmentManager(CoClass): u'Singleton object that manages different environments (collections of configuration information).' _reg_clsid_ = GUID('{8A626D49-5F5E-47D9-9463-0B802E9C4167}') _idlflags_ = [] _typelib_path_ = typelib_path _reg_typelib_ = ('{5E1F7BC3-67C5-4AEE-8EC6-C4B73AAC42ED}', 1, 0) INumberFormat._methods_ = [ ] I want to extract both the IXMLSerializerAlt and INumberFormat methods definitions however i cant figure out a proper regex. E.g. for IXMLSerializer i want to extract this: IXMLSerializerAlt._methods_ = [ COMMETHOD([helpstring(u'Loads an object from an XML string.')], HRESULT, 'LoadFromString', ( ['in'], BSTR, 'XML' ), ( ['in'], BSTR, 'TypeName' ), ( ['in'], BSTR, 'TypeNamespaceURI' ), ( ['retval', 'out'], POINTER(POINTER(IUnknown)), 'obj' )), ] This regex in my mind this should work: ^\w+\._methods_\s=\s\[$ (^.+$)* ^]$ Im checking my regex's using kodos however i cannot figure out a way to make this work.

  • Why is TreeSet<T> an internal type in .NET?

    - by Justin Niessner
    So, I was just digging around Reflector trying to find the implementation details of HashSet (out of sheer curiosity based on the answer to another question here) and noticed the following: internal class TreeSet<T> : ICollection<T>, IEnumerable<T>, ICollection, IEnumerable, ISerializable, IDeserializationCallback Without looking too deep into the details, it looks like a Self-Balancing Binary Search Tree. My question is, is there anybody out there with the insight as to why this class is internal? Is it simply because the other collection types use it internally and hide the complexities of a BST from the general masses...or am I way off base?

  • Touch Screen Ubuntu 10.04LTS

    - by WalterJ89
    I'm trying to get a touch screen working with Ubuntu 10.04LTS (64bit) -it is a serial touchsceen, connected at /dev/ttyS0 ,i know that works because I get garbage in the terminal when I enable it. -before the screen used a 3m driver (I believe) in XP. My knowledge of Linux is passive so I generally pick up something when I need it. To get this working I came accross a lot of tutorials (a lot outdated a bit), I'm still at a loss to get this work. I'm not sure where to put linux drivers (/usr/ or /dev/?) most tutorials kind of skip over that part. I have tried editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf unsuccessfully. I'm not sure what the syntax for that is supposed to be. Thank You

  • When I try to install Windows 7 on dell inspiron 1420 which came with Ubuntu freezes at the beginnin

    - by draganstankovic
    I have searched many forums and tried a lot of suggested solutions but nothing works. I am sure that installation disk is ok cause it worked before (I was able to install Windows7 on my other notebook - MSI). What happens is: I boot with installation CD, it says 'Windows is loading files...' Then it says Starting Windows (mouse laser works at that moment). Then I get the screen with window which has a title "Install Windows" with options to choose language, keyboard, etc. and asking me to click next. But, the problem is that at that moment mouse and keyboard don't work at all. Mouse's laser is turned off, and if I press CAPS LOCK on keyboard it doesn't turn the LED on. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

  • Specify an inline callback function as an argument.

    - by Matthias Vance
    LS, Let me first explain what I'm trying to achieve using some pseudo-code (JavaScript). // Declare our function that takes a callback as as an argument, and calls the callback with true. B(func) { func(true); } // Call the function B(function(bool success) { /* code that uses success */ }); I hope this says it all. If not, please comment on my question so I can write a little more to clarify my issue. What I want is to have code like this in C++. I have tried to use lambda functions, but I was unable to specify a parameter type for those. Kind regards, Matthias Vance

  • How to extract a submatrix from a matrix .. ?

    - by ZaZu
    Hello, I have a matrix in a txt file and I want to load the matrix based on my input of number of rows and columns For example, I have a 5 by 5 matrix in the file. I want to extract a 3 by 3 matrix, how can I do that ? I created a nested loop using : FILE *sample sample=fopen("randomfile.txt","r"); for(i=0;i<rows;i++){ for(j=0;j<cols;j++){ fscanf(sample,"%f",&matrix[i][j]); } fscanf(sample,"\n",&matrix[i][j]); } fclose(sample); Sadly the code does not work .. If I have this matrix : 5.00 4.00 5.00 6.00 5.00 4.00 3.00 25.00 5.00 3.00 4.00 23.00 5.00 2.00 352.00 6.00 And inputting 3 for rows and 3 for columns, I get : 5.00 4.00 5.00 6.00 5.00 4.00 3.00 25.00 5.00 Which is obviously wrong , its reading line by line rather than skipping the unmentioned column ... What am I doing wrong ? Thanks !

  • SQL Filter Multiple Tables Data

    - by Brad
    If it matters, I'm using Firebird 2.1 database. I have three tables, one with keywords, one with negative keywords, and the other with required keywords. I need to be able to filter the data so the output has just the keywords that meat the stipulation of not being in the negative keyword list, and IF there are any required words, then it will require the results to have those keywords in the end result. The tables are very similar, the field in the tables that I would be matching against are all called keyword. I don't know SQL very well at all. I'm guessing it would be something like SELECT keyword from keywordstable where keyword in requiredkeywordstable and where NOT in negativekeywordstable Just a side note, The required keywords table could be empty which would mean there are no required keywords. Any help would be appreciated. -Brad

  • Hardware Lossless Compression for Hard Drives?

    - by GeoffreyF67
    I happened across this article about hardware based hard drive encryption and realized that not only would this give a great way to protect your data but it would also speed up the applications that we use to encrypt that data. This lead me to wonder... Would it be possible to do the same thing for compression so that all of the data is compressed or uncompressed appropriately as it is read and written to the drive? I haven't done any firmware programming in quite some time so I'm not even sure this is technically possible. If it were, however, it could probably give quite a bit more storage space to folks. What are the pros and cons of programming such an approach to be used in the firmware? G-Man

  • Do not want Form to display over other application windows

    - by Cat
    I am displaying a Form from one process by passing the Show method a window handle from another process. I only want this new Form to display above the passed Form, like a MessageBox. However, this newly launched Form appears above other application windows, despite: Setting Process.WindowStyle.Hidden to the Form-displaying process Overriding the ShowWithoutActivation and CreateParams properties of the Form. Making sure Form.TopMost is not true I have checked that the window handle is valid from the second process. Focus is not stolen, however. Process A: Pass (Form) window handle to a new Process B via the command line Process B: Display a new Form using Form.Show(anotherProcessWindowHandle)

  • How is this inupt tag linking to another page?

    - by Matt
    Response.Write("<div><input type='submit' name='submit' value='Update Cart' /></div>") Response.Write("<div><input type='submit' name='submit' value='Shop More' /></div>") Response.Write("<div><input type='submit' name='submit' value='Checkout' /></div>") that is some example code from my teacher, but he hasn't answered my email in a couple days so I need some help. When you click the Update Cart button it just updates the cart page it's on, but when you click the Shop More button it links to Shop.aspx a different page, and the Checkout links to another page as well. I can't figure out how it is linking just from that code, anybody have any insights?

  • Why does this CSS example use "height: 1%" with "overflow: auto"?

    - by Lawrence Lau
    I am reading a HTML and CSS book. It has a sample code of two-column layout. <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html> <head> <style> #main {height: 1%; overflow: auto;} #main, #header, #footer {width: 768px; margin: auto;} #bodycopy { float: right; width: 598px; } #sidebar {margin-right: 608px; } #footer {clear: both; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="header" style='background-color: #AAAAAA'>This is the header.</div> <div id="main" style='background-color: #EEEEEE'> <div id="bodycopy" style='background-color: #BBBBBB'> This is the principal content.<br /> This is the principal content.<br /> This is the principal content.<br /> This is the principal content.<br /> This is the principal content.<br /> This is the principal content.<br /> This is the principal content.<br /> This is the principal content.<br /> This is the principal content.<br /> This is the principal content.<br /> This is the principal content.<br /> This is the principal content.<br /> This is the principal content.<br /> This is the principal content.<br /> This is the principal content.<br /> </div> <div id="sidebar" style='background-color: #CCCCCC'> This is the sidebar. </div> </div> <div id="footer" style='background-color: #DDDDDD'>This is the footer.</div> </body> </html> The author mentions that the use of overflow auto and 1% height will make the main area expand to encompass the computed height of content. I try to remove the 1% height and tried in different browsers but they don't show a difference. I am quite confused of its use. Any idea?
