• How can I monitor VNC via Nagios?

  I have a number of remote sites which have VNC running on a few computers for support purposes. They are (obviously) only available on our internal network. I am using Nagios to keep track of all the systems in the network and I want to have it check to make sure the VNC server is running on the appropriate hosts. There is a 'check_vnc' plugin available here but it relies on VNC Snapshot which I don't want to use. Certainly I could use it, but it adds more complexity and dependency, which I want to avoid. It seems simpler to just use check_tcp to make sure I get the proper response to a connection request for VNC, e.g. port 5900, send a connect string, get back framebuffer info. My real question, I suppose, is this: What is the 'proper' generic connect string for VNC (I use both UltraVNC and RealVNC) and what is the expected response? If it's really easier to use the VNC Snapshot and check_vnc, let me know. I just can't imagine that a string of text isn't easier, faster, and less bandwidth intensive to monitor.

• Sendmail /etc/hosts and DNS ... what is the correct way?

  I found one tutorial on setting up sendmail that says that in the /etc/hosts file, "The entry for 127.0.0.1 must always be followed by the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the server." Like so: 127.0.0.1 bigboy.my-site.com localhost.localdomain localhost bigboy (This tutorial is here). However, I can't find anyone else suggesting something like that. instead most people seem to put some combination of localhost and localdomain.localhost after 127.0.0.1, and then some variant of the fully qualified domain name after the public ip address. What is the correct way?

• Clear Type problem in Windows 7

  I try to tune ClearType in Windows 7 x64 using the ClearType Text Tuner. I can choose whatever options I want on the first 3 pages, but on the last page, whatever I choose is reverted as soon as I click finish. Next time I run the tuner I can see that the second option is selected, not the option that I wanted (the last one). Has anybody else found this odd behavior?

• Limiting software installation to specific user(s)

  Is there a way to limit software installation to one particular user or to a specific set of users only? In some software installers, this is available as an option, but in most cases the software just gets installed on all user profiles. I'd like to know if there's a way to prevent that. This will be for computers running Windows XP, Vista, and 7. If anybody can point me to a related SU topic or a link, it will be much appreciated :) (Been searching for something like this for weeks already.)

• EGODatabase does not retain inserted record

  Hi Guy! I'm using EGODatabase to process my data. When I tried to insert data into the database which I created with Base and attached to the project, the data that was inserted programmatically will not show up when I restart my app.However the data inserted manually using Base will show up just fine.   I've gone through this page: http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/device.html, My manifest has <application android:icon="@drawable/icon" android:label="@string/app_name" android:debuggable="true"> My phone has Menu - Settings - Applications - Development - USB Debugging checked I have gone to the control panel on my Windows XP 64 bit and installed the USB drivers given to me by the SDK installer at: android-sdk_r05-windows\android-sdk-windows\usb_driver So my computer does recognize the android device. However.. when I run an app on Eclipse, it still insists on opening it up in an emulator rather than my phone. How can I fix that?

As I set ClientId as the id column for this table, I am getting TooManyRowsAffectedException. could you please let me know how to set a composite key at mapping level so that NHibernate can udpate based on ClientId and Type. • Using VCL for the web (intraweb) as a trick for adding web interface to a legacy non-tiered (2 tiers

  My team is maintaining a huge Client Server win32 Delphi application. It is a client/server application (Thick client) that uses DevArt (SDAC) components to connect to SQL Server. The business logic is often "trapped" in Component's event handlers, anyway with some degree of refactoring it is doable to move the business logic in common units (a big part of this work has already been done during refactoring... Maintaing legacy applications someone else wrote is very frustrating, but this is a very common job). Now there is the request of a web interface, I have several options of course, in this question i want to focus on the VCL for the web (intraweb) option. The idea is to use the common code (the same pas files) for both the client/server application and the web application. I heard of many people that moved legacy apps from delphi to intraweb, but here I am trying to keep the Thick client too. The idea is to use common code, may be with some compiler directives to write specific code: {$IFDEF CLIENTSERVER} {here goes the thick client specific code} {$ELSE} {here goes the Intraweb specific code} {$ENDIF} Then another problem is the "migration plan", let's say I have 300 features and on the first release I will have only 50 of them available in the web application. How to keep track of it? I was thinking of (ab)using Delphi interfaces to handle this. For example for the User Authentication I could move all the related code in a procedure and declare an interface like: type IUserAuthentication= interface['{0D57624C-CDDE-458B-A36C-436AE465B477}'] procedure UserAuthentication; end; In this way as I implement the IUserAuthentication interface in both the applications (Thick Client and Intraweb) I know that That feature has been "ported" to the web. Anyway I don't know if this approach makes sense. I made a prototype to simulate the whole process. It works for a "Hello world" application, but I wonder if it makes sense on a large application or this Interface idea is only counter-productive and can backfire. My question is: does this approach make sense? (the Interface idea is just an extra idea, it is not so important as the common code part described above) Is it a viable option? I understand it depends a lot of the kind of application, anyway to be generic my one is in the CRM/Accounting domain, and the number of concurrent users on a single installation is typically less than 20 with peaks of 50. EXTRA COMMENT (UPDATE): I ask this question because since I don't have a n-tier application I see Intraweb as the unique option for having a web application that has common code with the thick client. Developing webservices from the Delphi code makes no sense in my specific case, so the alternative I have is to write the web interface using ASP.NET (duplicating the business logic), but in this case I cannot take advantage of the common code in an easy way. Yes I could use dlls maybe, but my code is not suitable for that.

• Is file transfer possible to iPhone 3.0 via Bluetooth or not?

  Is it possible to transfer files of a bluetooth device, lets say a digital pen (e.g. Nokia or Logitech io2) to the iPhone? I am interested if I could do a native application that could somehow get that binary file sent by the digital pen and do something with it. I am used to rfcomm and obex but I can only find inconclusive results when I search for that and the support in the iPhone SDK... Any ideas?

• Understand ACTV mode and the PORT command

  Hello, I'm the part time FTP server administrator (with no real full-time admin). We currently only allow ACTV mode connections. Some of our clients have had issues with this but for the most part they've been ok using ACTV. For the few who aren't, we've been able to push the data over to their servers from ours. there is one client in particular however who is currently having trouble. He is using file-zilla and issuing a PORT command. First, does using the PORT command imply that you are in ACTV mode? Second is there a way in FileZilla to explicitly change to ACTV mode? • Keep TabItems in a TabControl from repositioning?

  Hi everyone, In WPF, Is there a simple way to stop TabItems in a TabControl from being repositioned when the selected TabItem changes? So that clicking on a TabItem would simply display its contents, but not reposition the TabItems as it usually does (by moving the selected TabItem to the bottom row of tabs if it wasn't there already). Edit: To clarify, I do want the tabs to be displayed in multiple rows, I just don't want the tab headers to be repositioned when a TabItem from a row other than the bottom row is selected. I'd like the collection of headers to remain completely static, but for the contents of that TabItem to still be displayed when its header is clicked. Thanks!

  In SO site both real users and temporary users can add a new questions. I assume each user type has a different table. My question is how can I attach the question to the right user? I assuming the temp users have their own table from the following reasons: Temp users don't have all the data that real users have. like: email, password, and all users details.   I'm trying to bind Fancy box links so that when the new links are created it will still work. I've seen a few other question on here but not really answered. This is what I'm trying to do. jQuery("a#[id^='domore_']").fancybox({ 'autoDimensions' : false, 'width' : 'auto', 'height' : 'auto' }); This works fine but when the page or links are reloaded by ajax it doesn't work. I tried using live() but I couldn't get it to work. How do you rebind or implement live on fancybox? Any way to do this? Thanks

  How am I supposed to pass a password to ldapsearch using the -y <password file> option? If I write the password in the password file in plain text, I get this error: ldap_bind: Invalid credentials (49) additional info: 80090308: LdapErr: DSID-0C0903AA, comment: AcceptSecurityContext error, data 52e, v1772 The same happens if I use the -w <password> option. Am I missing something?

• Adjust output Brightness/Gamma/Colors in Gnome

  We have a desktop system running Ubuntu 8.04.4, and it is connected to a standard desktop LCD monitor. Unfortunately, in 8.04.4, the brightness of the image is cranked way up. It appears to be a graphics driver issue. Unfortunately, installing a newer GPU driver for this Intel GPU is very difficult to do. So, I am looking for a software (or config file?) solution to achieve this. Note: Ubuntu 9.10 and higher do not exhibit this issue, so this is not a hardware problem. Note: VNC-ing to this machine from another does not exhibit this issue either. Also, I installed "DisplayCalibrator.app", and it does not work very well (the app comes up, but the contents of the window are blank). Is there anything that I can add to the xorg.conf file to correct this issue? Also, this solution: http://superuser.com/questions/96539/adjust-contrast-and-brightness-in-ubuntu did not resove my issue. Thank you all for the help!
