  • Modifying a const through a non-const pointer

    - by jasonline
    I'm a bit confused what happened in the following code: const int e = 2; int* w = ( int* ) &e; // (1) cast to remove const-ness *w = 5; // (2) cout << *w << endl; // (3) outputs 5 cout << e << endl; // (4) outputs 2 cout << "w = " << w << endl; // (5) w points to the address of e cout << "&e = " << &e << endl; In (1), w points to the address of e. In (2), that value was changed to 5. However, when the values of *w and e were displayed, their values are different. But if you print value of w pointer and &e, they have the same value/address. How come e still contained 2, even if it was changed to 5? Were they stored in a separate location? Or a temporary? But how come the value pointed by w is still the address of e?

  • Pinvoke- to call a function with pointer to pointer to pointer parameter

    - by jambodev
    complete newbe in PInvoke. I have a function in C with this signature: int addPos(int init_array_size, int *cnt, int *array_size, PosT ***posArray, PosT ***hPtr, char *id, char *record_id, int num, char *code, char *type, char *name, char *method, char *cont1, char *cont2, char *cont_type, char *date1, char *date_day, char *date2, char *dsp, char *curr, char *contra_acc, char *np, char *ten, char *dsp2, char *covered, char *cont_subtype, char *Xcode, double strike, int version, double t_price, double long, double short, double scale, double exrcised_price, char *infoMsg); and here is how PosT looks like: typedef union pu { struct dpos d; struct epo e; struct bpos b; struct spos c; } PosT ; my questions are: 1- do I need to define a class in CSharp representing PosT? 2- how do I pass PosT ***posArray parameter across frm CSharp to C? 3- How do I specify marshaling for it all? I Do appreciate your help

  • C++ difference between "char *" and "char * = new char[]"

    - by nashmaniac
    So, if I want to declare an array of characters I can go this way char a[2]; char * a ; char * a = new char[2]; Ignoring the first declaration, the other two use pointers. As far as I know the third declaration is stored in heap and is freed using the delete operator . does the second declaration also hold the array in heap ? Does it mean that if something is stored in heap and not freed can be used anywhere in a file like a variable with file linkage ? I tried both third and second declaration in one function and then using the variable in another but it didn't work, why ? Are there any other differences between the second and third declarations ?

  • Force external function to be const

    - by vanna
    Here is my problem. I made a class with a member function declared as const that uses an external function that I cannot modify (declared in someone else's code) and that is not declared const. More precisely Someone else's code class B { public: void foo(); }; My code class A : public B { public: void bar() const { this->foo(); } }; I know that for member data we can force const-correctness by using mutable or const_cast. How can I 'hack' foo such that my compiler understands that I would like to use it as if it was const even if it is not declared in someone else's code ?

  • convert pointer to pointer to void pointer

    - by FihopZz
    When I'm learning to use qsort to sort an array of string, there is a question puzzled me. For example, to sort the following s char *s[] = { "Amit", "Garima", "Gaurav", "Vaibhav" }; To use the qsort, you must provide a comparison function like the following function cstring_cmp I guess in the qsort function, the type of parameter to be passed to the function cstring_cmp is char**. How to convert a char** to a void*? Why can we convert a char** to a void*? int cstring_cmp(const void *a, const void *b) { const char **ia = (const char **)a; const char **ib = (const char **)b; return -strcasecmp(*ia, *ib); /* return the negative of the normal comparison */ }

  • C appending char to char*

    - by Ostap Hnatyuk
    So I'm trying to append a char to a char*. For example I have char *word = " "; I also have char ch = 'x'; I do append(word, ch); Using this method.. void append(char* s, char c) { int len = strlen(s); s[len] = c; s[len+1] = '\0'; } It gives me a segmentation fault, and I understand why I suppose. Because s[len] is out of bounds. How do I make it so it works? I need to clear the char* a lot as well, if I were to use something like char word[500]; How would I clear that once it has some characters appended to it? Would the strlen of it always be 500? Thanks in advance.

  • Implicit conversion : const reference vs non-const reference vs non-reference

    - by Nawaz
    Consider this code, struct A {}; struct B { B(const A&) {} }; void f(B) { cout << "f()"<<endl; } void g(A &a) { cout << "g()" <<endl; f(a); //a is implicitly converted into B. } int main() { A a; g(a); } This compiles fine, runs fine. But if I change f(B) to f(B&), it doesn't compile. If I write f(const B&), it again compiles fine, runs fine. Why is the reason and rationale? Summary: void f(B); //okay void f(B&); //error void f(const B&); //okay I would like to hear reasons, rationale and reference(s) from the language specification, for each of these cases. Of course, the function signatures themselves are not incorrect. Rather A implicitly converts into B and const B&, but not into B&, and that causes the compilation error.

  • initializing char and char pointers

    - by ra170
    What's the difference between these: This one works: char* pEmpty = new char; *pEmpty = 'x'; However if I try doing: char* pEmpty = NULL; pEmpty = 'x'; // <---- doesn't work! and: char* pEmpty = "x"; // putting in double quotes works! why??

  • Const unsigned char* to char*

    - by BSchlinker
    So, I have two types at the moment: const unsigned char* unencrypted_data_char; string unencrypted_data; I'm attempting to perform a simple conversion of data from one to the other (string - const unsigned char*) As a result, I have the following: strcpy((unencrypted_data_char),(unencrypted_data.c_str())); However, I'm receiving the error: error C2664: 'strcpy' : cannot convert parameter 1 from 'const unsigned char *' to 'char *' Any advise? I thought using reinterpret_cast would help, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

  • Difference between static const char* and const char*.

    - by Will MacDonagh
    Could someone please explain the difference in how the 2 snippets of code are handled below? They definitely compile to different assembly code, but I'm trying to understand how the code might act differently. I understand that string literals are thrown into read only memory and are effectively static, but how does that differ from the explicit static below? struct Obj1 { void Foo() { const char* str( "hello" ); } }; and struct Obj2 { void Bar() { static const char* str( "hello" ); } };

  • How to const declare the this pointer sent as parameter

    - by Tomas
    Hi, I want to const declare the this pointer received as an argument. static void Class::func(const OtherClass *otherClass) { // use otherClass pointer to read, but not write to it. } It is being called like this: void OtherClass::func() { Class::func(this); } This does not compile nad if i dont const declare the OtherClass pointer, I can change it. Thanks.

  • char[] and char* compatibility?

    - by Aerovistae
    In essence, will this code work? And before you say "Run it and see!", I just realized my cygwin didn't come with gcc and it's currently 40 minutes away from completing reinstallation. That being said: char* words[1000]; for(int i = 0; i<1000; i++) words[i] = NULL; char buffer[ 1024 ]; //omit code that places "ADD splash\0" into the buffer if(strncmp (buffer, "ADD ", 4){ char* temp = buffer + 4; printf("Adding: %s", temp); int i = 0; while(words[i] != NULL) i++; words[i] = temp; } I'm mostly uncertain about the line char* temp = buffer + 4, and also whether I can assign words[i] in the manner that I am. Am I going to get type errors when I eventually try to compile this in 40 minutes? Also-- if this works, why don't I need to use malloc() on each element of words[]? Why can I say words[i] = temp, instead of needing to allocate memory for words[i] the length of temp?

  • C# assign char and char array to string?

    - by Bopha
    char character = 'c'; string str = null; str = character.ToString();//this is ok char[] arrayChar = { 'a', 'b', 'c', 'd' }; string str2 = null; str2 = string.Copy(arrayChar.ToString());//this is not ok str2 = arrayChar.ToString();//this is not ok. I'm trying to converting char array to string, but the last two attempts don't work. Other source I found and they have to create new string type, but I don't know why. Can someone give me little explaination, thanks.

  • JNA problem with char** (in dll)

    - by underline
    Hi, ok it is 'easy' to make jna wrapper solution for mapping exported functions within dll using jna: long f1(int x), just int long f2(char* y), just char[] but how to deal with long f3(char** z) ? I need f3's result(long) as well as z value on java side. Please don't say cpp code should be rewritten to avoid this:-)

  • Why is passing a string literal into a char* argument only sometimes a compiler error?

    - by Brian Postow
    I'm working in a C, and C++ program. We used to be compiling without the make-strings-writable option. But that was getting a bunch of warnings, so I turned it off. Then I got a whole bunch of errors of the form "Cannot convert const char* to char* in argmuent 3 of function foo". So, I went through and made a whole lot of changes to fix those. However, today, the program CRASHED because the literal "" was getting passed into a function that was expecting a char*, and was setting the 0th character to 0. It wasn't doing anything bad, just trying to edit a constant, and crashing. My question is, why wasn't that a compiler error? In case it matters, this was on a mac compiled with gcc-4.0. EDIT: added code: char * host = FindArgDefault("EMailLinkHost", ""); stripCRLF(linkHost, '\n'); where: char *FindArgDefault(char *argName, char *defVal) {// simplified char * val = defVal; return(val); } and void stripCRLF(char *str, char delim) { char *p, *q; for (p = q = str; *p; ++p) { if (*p == 0xd || *p == 0xa) { if (p[1] == (*p ^ 7)) ++p; if (delim == -1) *p = delim; } *q++ = *p; } *q = 0; // DIES HERE } This compiled and ran until it tried to set *q to 0...

  • Double pointer const-correctness warnings in C

    - by Michael Koval
    You can obviously cast a pointer to non-const data to a a pointer of the same type to const data: int *x = NULL; int const *y = x; Adding additional const qualifiers to match the additional indirection should logically work the same way: int * *x = NULL; int *const *y = x; /* okay */ int const *const *z = y; /* warning */ Compiling this with GCC or Clang with the -Wall flag, however, results in the following warning: test.c:4:23: warning: initializing 'int const *const *' with an expression of type 'int *const *' discards qualifiers in nested pointer types int const *const *z = y; /* warning */ ^ ~ Why does adding an additional const qualifier "discard qualifiers in nested pointer types"?

  • how to pass vector of string to foo(char const *const *const)?

    - by user347208
    Hi, This is my first post so please be nice. I searched in this forum and googled but I still can not find the answer. This problem has bothered me for more than a day, so please give me some help. Thank you. I need to pass a vector of string to a library function foo(char const *const *const). I can not pass the &Vec[0] since it's a pointer to a string. Therefore, I have an array and pass the c_str() to that array. The following is my code (aNames is the vector of string): const char* aR[aNames.size()]; std::transform(aNames.begin(), aNames.end(), aR, boost::bind(&std::string::c_str, _1)); foo(aR); However, it seems it causes some undefined behavior: If I run the above code, then the function foo throw some warnings about illegal characters ('èI' blablabla) in aR. If I print aR before function foo like this: std::copy(aR, aR+rowNames.size(), std::ostream_iterator<const char*>(std::cout, "\n")); foo(aR); Then, everything is fine. My questions are: Does the conversion causes undefined behavior? If so, why? What is the correct way to pass vector of string to foo(char const *const *const)? Thank you very much for your help!

  • build error with boost spirit grammar (boost 1.43 and g++ 4.4.1)

    I'm having issues getting a small spirit/qi grammar to compile. The build stack trace is fugly enought to not make any sense to me (despite some assertion_failed i could notice in there but that didn't brought much information) the input grammar header: • Template inheritence c++

    - by Chris Condy
    I have made a template singleton class, I have also made a data structure that is templated. My question is; how do I make my templated data structure inherit from a singleton so you can only have one float type of this structure? I have tested both seperate and have found no problems. Code provided under... (That is the problem) template <class Type> class AbstractRManagers : public Singleton<AbstractRManagers<Type> > The problem is the code above doesn't work I get alot of errors. I cant get it to no matter what I do template a templated singleton class... I was asking for maybe advice or maybe if the code above is incorrect guidence? #ifndef SINGLETON_H #define SINGLETON_H template <class Type> class Singleton { public: virtual ~Singleton();
