• Bare minimum on the Joel Test

  From the Joel Test, of the 12, which do you think are the absolute must-haves to at least have a decently running software department/company? I realise there is no absolutely right answer. I'm just trying to get opinions of others out there. My own organization only manages a measly 5 of 12. If you check listings on Careers 2.0, most companies don't score a full 12 either but I'm sure they're doing fine. Does SO publish the stats for those anywhere? Or has anyone tried scrapping the results? Would be interesting to know which are practised the most. And whether because they are easier to implement or whether they actually have the most impact. • Good locations worldwide for a coder gypsy wannabe

  Yes, this is not programming related but please bear with me =). I run a small niche SaaS business. Lately I've been thinking of traveling and experiencing life in other places. Would really appreciate suggestions for good places a developer could relocate to. In particular I'm looking for a place that: Has good internet connection (cheap stable broadband, lots of places that provide free wifi, etc.) Low cost of living (rent and food fairly cheap). At least half of the population speak English. Has a local courier agent (DHL, Fedex, any...). The government allows for extended stay of foreigners. I'm thinking of staying for about 6 months at each location and maybe doing it for 3 years. So looking for 5 to 6 locations in total. So if any of you think you're staying in a place that would be great for a visiting developer then please shout out. Include as detailed a description as possible. And include any cons about the place if there are. The only place that pops to mind right now is Bali =). Isle of Skye also seems interesting but I think immigration is tight and cost of living would definitely be higher. Thanks in advance for suggestions =)

• Pattern for verifying authenticity of a request to WCF service

  I have a client app that makes calls to a WCF service. This app is on a public computer that's easily accessible and anyone can easily copy the .EXE and .CONFIG of my app into another machine and start using it. Is there a pattern where I can check if the request is coming only from an app on a computer I installed it on and not on one it has been copied to? Thanks in advance.

  I'm new to mocks and am deciding on a mock framework. The Moq home quotes Currently, it's the only mocking library that goes against the generalized and somewhat unintuitive (especially for novices) Record/Reply approach from all other frameworks. Can anyone explain simply what the Record/Replay approach is and how Moq differs? What are the pros and cons of each especially from the point of deciding a framework? Thanks.

  I wonder why it is not working? check_login.php <?php session_start(); $data = array("username" => "true"); echo json_encode($data); ?> my js file var linkName; $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "check_login.php", dataType: "json", success: function(json){ if(json.username != "true") { //do something } } }); I am trying to get the username after checking whether or not the user has signed in yet in the php file, something like passing a session variable. But currently passing a string seems to already have a problem. Any know what I did wrong here? Still not working the code above. Anyone want to help me out here?
