  • Text Expander broken upon Snow Leopard Upgrade

    I've been using Text Expander for years. However, I found out today it doesn't work on my newly upgraded (to Snow Leopard) Macbook Pro anymore. I know that there are a lot of applications that are not compatible with Snow Leopard, and developers around the world are working on them to work again on our beautiful macs. My questions are: 1. Is TextExpander supposed to NOT work on Snow Leopard? 2. What is a good substitution to replace TextExpander? or any updates from TextExpander developers?

  • windows 7 start menu's search "see more results" broken

    After searching in my start menu and clicking to "see more results", I got an error dialog: It "seems" that it should be search-ms:query=document an not search:query=document but where can I fix this? Additional info: New user account don't have the problem. Windows 7 Ultimate - RTM Disabling/Enabling again "Windows Search" (in Start Control Panel Programs Turn Windows Features on or off) doesn't fix it. (There's a HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Search in my registry that's not there normally.) - outdated see comments...   • ubuntu 9.04 pptp broken after a power failure

    I have a small Ubuntu 9.04 router setup as a NAT box and a PPTP server. After a power failure everything except the PPTP server still works. A windows client gets to "registering your computer on the network" but then says Error 742: The remote computer does not support the required data encryption type. I did some research and I think the problem is with the ppp_mppe module. When I try to run 'modprobe ppp_mppe' it hangs indefinitely. What would cause this hang? Any ideas how I can troubleshoot this further? Thanks for the help! UPDATE: I am still having the problem, however I have found some more information. When the first user tries to connect to pptp, the process list shows modprobe sha1 running, and one instance of modprobe ppp_mppe for each connection attempt. If I killall modprobe at this point the next connection attempt works, and everything is fine until the next reboot. I'm planning to do a clean install at some point in the future but I'd really like to get to the real cause of this.

  • Search predictions broken in Chrome - reinstall didn't solve the problem

    I recently changed the default search engine to a custom google search URL (using baseUrl) with some additional parameters and removed all the rest of the search engines, and since then, the search predictions stopped working. I even tried to reinstall Chrome but as soon as I resync, the problem is back! Search predictions are just gone without option to fix!! In IE changing the search provider allows specifying a prediction (suggestion) provider, In chrome, once you change the default search engine, you'll never be able to have predictions again!! This is a terrible bug, I mean WTF!!! Is there any workaround to that? I posted a bug report a while ago but it seems no one looks at it. I'm about to give up on Chrome and go back to IE, the only good thing about Chrome is the Extension market and the AdBlocker (which I can find in IE as well). The perfrormance changes don't matter to me too much. Thanks

  • SSH broken after hostname change on EC2-hosted Ubuntu

    I changed my instance's hostname using the hostname utility and then set it in /etc/hostname so that the new name survives reboot. My main motivation was for differentiating between instances at the prompt using the \h format in PS1. EDIT I also changed permissions on my home directory. I made my home directory group writeable. END EDIT Now I can no longer SSH into the machine. The short of it is the error Permission denied (publickey). Running ssh -v, the more verbose output is: debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering RSA public key: /Users/dmitry/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /Users/dmitry/.ssh/ec2key.pem debug1: read PEM private key done: type RSA debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: No more authentication methods to try. Permission denied (publickey). Should I have done something after changing the hostname? Now I can't get into the instance! :(

  • VirtualBox 4.1.20 (Windows 7 / Ubuntu 12.04 (32 bit)) copy/paste is broken

    I have a Windows 7 Pro host, and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS guest. I cannot get the shared clipboard working. I have installed Guest Additions 4.1.20 on VirtualBox 4.1.20, have restarted, followed instructions found at http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.html#idp18411760, and have enabled bidirectional clipboard sharing within VirtualBox options. However, I still cannot copy and paste between the host and guest. Copy/paste works great within the host, and within the guest, but not between the two. I'm out of ideas.

  • Open ports broken from internal network

    Quick summary: Forwarded port works from the outside world, but from the internal network using the external IP the connection is refused. This is a simplified situation to make the explanation easier: I have a computer that is running a service on port 12345. This computer has an internal IP 192.168.1.100 and is connected directly to a modem/router which has internal IP 192.168.1.1 and external (public, static) IP 1.2.3.4. (The router is TP-LINK TD-w8960N) I have set up port forwarding (virtual server) at port 12345 to go to port 12345 at 192.168.1.100. If I run telnet 192.168.1.100 12345 from the same computer everything works. But running telnet 1.2.3.4 12345 says connection refused. If I do this on another computer (on the same internal network, connected to the router) the same thing happens. This would seem like the port forwarding is not working. However... If I run a online port checking service on my external IP and the service port it says the port is open and I can see the remote server connecting and immediately closing connection. And using another computer that is connected to the internet using a mobile connection I can also use telnet 1.2.3.4 12345 and I get a working connection. So the port forwarding seems to be working, however using external IP from the internal network doesn't. I have no idea what can be causing this, since another setup very much like this (different router) works for me. I can access a service running on a server from inside the network both through the internal and external IP. Note: I know I could just use the internal IP inside of the network to access this service. But if I have a laptop that must be able to do this both from inside and outside it would be annoying to constantly switch between 1.2.3.4 and 192.168.1.100 in the software configuration.   • Why Is Web Sharing Broken on My Mac?

    Background: I use my Mac for web development, running copies of web sites locally. I recently installed the Snow Leopard update, which to all intents and purposes seems to have gone fine, except... What's not working? Web-sharing; more specifically I can't turn it on via preferences. The preference pane just hangs when I try to. So Apache doesn't start on reboot. I can start Apache by hand, but I don't know enough to either setup apache to start with the computer, or to properly fix web sharing. Further details My Apache error log shows nothing on when the system boots up (as I would expect).     I have an e-commerce site with 300,000 products and 20,000 categories. It is slow and currently in production. I decided to install Varnish to speed up. The trouble is that during installation, I got a Guru Meditation. Since the site is in production, I am not allowed to leave this error more than a second, thinking to have made an enormous stupidity. I say that there may be a specific configuration with plesk. Has anyone already installed Varnish on a ubuntu 11.04 server with plesk 10? Does anyone have a better resource? I know it is "very vague" as an error, but maybe some of you have had this problem. edit 24/11/2011 I continued to work on Varnish + Plesk ... but it still does not work. 1) I changed the port for apache in plesk General # mysql -uadmin -p`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow` -D psa -e'replace into misc (param, val) values ("http_port", 8008)' 1.1) I rebuild the server conf # /usr/local/psa/admin/bin/httpdmng --reconfigure-all 2) I changed the apache conf files (if those were not taking full plesk top) vim /etc/apache2/ports.conf NameVirtualHost *:8008 Listen 8008 2.1) I do the same with /etc/apache2/sites-enables/000-default 3) I changed the port of my vhost (a single server) vim /var/www/vhosts/MYDOMAIN.COM/conf/XXXXXXXXX.http.include Replace the port 80 by this I want. This is the default web page for this server. The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet. Can somebody help me ? This means that my vhost does not point to the right place. Why? What to do? How?

  • GNU screen multiuser mode is broken in OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

    I'm using GNU screen for remote pair programming. Let's call the local account for the remote user 'pairpair'. I have the following lines in my .screenrc: multiuser on acladd pairpair I have run sudo chmod u+s /usr/bin/screen. However, when the remote user tries to connect to my screen with the command screen -r [my_account_name]/[pid_of_screen] I receive the following message: Attach attempt with bad pid(xxx) The pid listed in the error message matches the pid of the screen process run by the remote user. The remote user's screen process hangs; my screen session continues happily along after the error message disappears. I've tried using both the built-in screen (at /usr/bin/screen) and the screen available from MacPorts, but I get the same error in both cases. This worked on OS X 10.5 (Leopard). I've googled around for the error message, but most of the hits relate to some BSD bug from 2003 or so (which was fixed). Has anyone else seen this behavior? Does anyone have any idea how to make multiuser support in screen work in SL?

  • "Open file location" is broken for Win Live Photo Gallery and Chrome

    Symptoms: Windows Live Photo Gallery: Right clicking on an image (.jpg, .png) and selecting the context menu item "Open file location" should open the containing folder in explorer. Instead, I get an error dialog stating "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." Chrome: After downloading a file (of any type), clicking the down arrow on the download status bar at the bottom and clicking "Show in folder" results in the same error dialog mentioned above. I'm using Windows 7. I'm pretty sure this is a registry entry gone bad but I've been unable to locate any information about this specific problem. It's not a file type association problem as I am not trying to open the files concerned, I'm trying to open an explorer window at the location for the file. I've found a similar issue that somebody had with explorer itself. However, the suggested registry fixes here for "Folder", "Directory" and "Drive" did not solve the problem. Also, If I use the searchbar in explorer to do a search, right click on a file and choose "Open file location", explorer jumps to that location without any trouble. I have not yet identified other programs with this issue.

  • BizTalk configuration broken following WCF hotfix installation

I am developing a WCF service and a BizTalk application on my workstation at the moment. As part of the WCF service, I had to install hotfix 971493 from Microsoft which updates some core WCF assemblies. Following installation of that hotfix, I am now experiencing severe issues in my existing BizTalk application. When I attempt to configure the properties of an existing WCF-Custom receive location, I get this error: Error loading properties (System.IO.FileLoadException) The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) If I click OK (the same error repeats four times) I eventually see the WCF-Custom properties dialog. However if I click on the various tabs, I continue to receive errors: The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) (Microsoft.BizTalk.Adapter.Wcf.Admin) The WCF-Custom receive location was working yesterday, and I installed the hotfix this morning. I'm guessing these two are related, and that BizTalk somehow has a reference to the old WCF assemblies. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

  • SQL 2005 Install completly broken on laptop.

    My problems started when I set up an exploratory domain controller at home. During that process, I changed the name of my laptop, from 'erisia' to 'erisia-laptop', and this resulted in me losing my admin account on SQL Server 2005 on my laptop. SQL Server seems to store the machine name as part of the user name, so now my local admin account is 'erisia-laptop\brady', which SQL server didn't recognise. I thought I'd cut my losses and just re-install SQL 2005, but the first install was aborted, so I tried a complete uninstall, followed by the new install. The latter didn't work while the former worked way too well. Now every attempt at installing SQL Server 2005 SP2 on my laptop running XP SP3 ends in sadness, with MSXML6 being the cause, because it won't install on this OS version. WTF? Does anyone know what I can do to get SQL 2005 installed? It's the only full admin DB tool I have. SQL 2008 Express that installed with VS 2010 Beta 2 doesn't allow much server admin.

  • "broken" windows xp after disc replacement

    Windows xp pro OEM was installed on my machine, Disk was failing so I cloned it to a new disk (larger one). Now windows said that the hardware has changed significantly and I need to re-activate, and I would gladly do (got the product number on a sticker on the machine) - only that for running the activation process I need to be logged-in, but when I try to login it just automatically logs me out again :( I know my credentials are O.K. because I can connect to the machine remotely and also use sysinternals tools such as PsExec or PSList etc. on it from a remote machine by specifying user and pasword. Login via safemode does not work any differently then in normal mode... I tried to run rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk (as suggested in several places on the net) using PsExec but it did not seem to help... Is there any way out of this evil circle? [ can't log in because not activated - cant activate because not logged in ]

  • Replace the broken file copying UI in Windows 2008 Server 64-bit Explorer

    Does anyone know a good GUI alternative for file copying on a Windows 2008 Server 64 bit edition. The built-in GUI has a hopeless interface and is bug-riddled which really hinders the ability to get things done safely. For example, often when moving a directory with subfolders, the directory and its subfolders will still remain, empty and not deleted. I've been through many of the common file copier and Windows Explorer alternatives, but either they flat-out do not work on a 64 bit/W2k8 machine or they do not actually fully replace the file copier.

    About an year ago I installed gnome fonts on my MacBook Pro and I use them for Terminal.app Today I was using Terminal with three windows open and suddenly the app has quit (I don't know if I accidentally pressed command+q) but when I reopened the application fonts looks strange. I had a screenshot taken before the accident I did the same screenshot now and here's the result I don't know what's happened, I tried to reinstall the fonts, restarted the computer, but with no luck. One more thing, I use an external screen, I read some posts regarding font issues with external monitors but I had this monitor before this accident and everything worked fine until now. Please help me to solve this because my eyes were used to that font and now it looks weird to see this different font

    I'm trying to get OpenLDAP on Lenny to work with StartTLS. I have a Fedora 13 machine which I'm using as a client for testing. So far the Fedora client is ignoring the 'host' directive in /etc/ldap.conf when I try to connect using ldapsearch. The client wants to connect to 127.0.0.1:389 even if I specify -H ldaps://server.name on when using ldapsearch. /etc/ldap.conf on the client machine is in mode 444. But even when I try connecting locally from an ssh session, I see errors like this: ldap_sasl_interactive_bind_s: Can't contact LDAP server (-1) Someone hit me with a cluebat, plz. Update: you must use ~/.ldaprc for settings such as 'host'. Also, I just used nmap against the ldap server and it showed 636 and 389 in an open state.   • Small Business Server services will not start, and remote desktop and UAC are broken

    Yesterday I began setting up a server with Windows Small Business Server 2008. All I am configuring it for right now is to be a domain controller and Exchange server. I completed the initial setup of SBS then started looking through different connection options (allowing VPN versus using a TS Gateway). After I rebooted one time, I started having three not-obviously-related issues: First, I could no longer remote desktop into the computer. I ran TCPView and saw that it was no longer listening on port 3389. I checked everything in Terminal Service Configuration but everything shows the computer ought to be allowing connections. Also, when I tried to use anything that required user account control elevation, the UAC dialog never popped up and the program that was waiting just froze. If I try to run "regedit" from the Run box, for example, it never appears. When I run in safe mode which does not run with UAC, I was able to access everything. I didn't want to deal with it, so I turned off UAC and rebooted. Finally, in the Windows SBS Console, there are status indicators for Security, Updates, Backup, and Other Alerts. The first three get stuck saying "Querying". Looking in the computer alerts, I have events showing the following services stopped: Background Intelligent Transfer Service KtmRm for Distributed Transaction Coordinator Distributed Transaction Coordinator Microsoft Exchange Information Store Microsoft Exchange System Attendant Microsoft Exchange Transport Windows Remote Management Update Services Windows Update I figured I must have configured something wrong accidentally and I couldn't find anything using Google explaining what might be the case, so I just decided to format the hard drive and reinstall SBS from scratch. I did this and everything was working last night, but I just turned the machine back on and it is doing the same thing again! On my second install, I did not configure anything except the following (all from SBS Console): Connect to the Internet (set IP and router address) Turn off customer feedback. Set up internet address. Decline to use a Smart Host for email. Added one standard user account. Since this happened again and I was very careful the second time not to configure anything outside of the SBS Console, I feel like there's something else going on. Right now the machine is on an isolated network that does have internet access. My desktop is the only other machine plugged into this network. Any and all help is appreciated (before I tear my hair out!)

  • FreeBSD console broken?

    It seems my FreeBSD console is misconfigured (i guess). I cannot use home button in command line, and in vi left arrow is switching me from edit to command mode, which makes editing a little difficult. How can I know what's wrong and fix it? I'm not a root, by the way, I just hope it's something with my profile configuration.

  • Moving from single-site to multi-site Active Directory has broken OWA proxying

    Originally we had the following setup: OfficeExch01 has Mailbox Role and CAS Role OfficeExch01 is in the office. CoLoExch01 had just CAS Role. CoLoExch01 is internet facing and in a CoLo. Three AD domain controllers in the default site. Users could go to https://webmail.whatever.com/owa, get proxyed to OfficeExch01 and everything was great. Well, we recently setup a separate AD site and put a domain controller and the ColoExch01 server in the new site. I also made that remote DC be a Global Catalog. Now, users get the following error: Outlook Web Access is not available. If the problem continues, contact technical support for your organization and tell them the following: There is no Microsoft Exchange Client Access server that has the necessary configuration in the Active Directory site where the mailbox is stored. I also see event 41 errors in the logs: The Client Access server "https://webmail.xxxxxxx.com/owa" attempted to proxy Outlook Web Access traffic for mailbox "/o=XXXXX/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)/cn=Recipients/cn=xxxxxxk". This failed because no Client Access server with an Outlook Web Access virtual directory configured for Kerberos authentication could be found in the Active Directory site of the mailbox. The simplest way to configure an Outlook Web Access virtual directory for Kerberos authentication is to set it to use Integrated Windows authentication by using the Set-OwaVirtualDirectory cmdlet in the Exchange Management Shell, or by using the Exchange Management Console. If you already have a Client Access server deployed in the target Active Directory site with an Outlook Web Access virtual directory configured for Kerberos authentication, the proxying Client Access server may not be finding that target Client Access server because it does not have an internalUrl parameter configured. You can configure the internalUrl parameter for the Outlook Web Access virtual directory on the Client Access server in the target Active Directory site by using the Set-OwaVirtualDirectory cmdlet. Looking this up I see a lot talk about ExternalURL and InternalURL settings. However, everything worked great until we made the new AD site. I also made sure the internal CAS server's /owa virtual directory is set to use Integrated Authentication. Is there something I need to do to allow Exchange to see that I've made these AD changes?
