  • Why do I have to run aptitude update twice to install Ruby?

    Summary. I have a fresh EC2 Precise 64-bit instance (ami-82fa58eb). After launching the instance, I want to install ruby1.9.1 (among others). This doesn't work: aptitude update && apt-get -o Dpkg::Options::="--force-confnew" --force-yes -fuy dist-upgrade && aptitude install -y ruby1.9.1 ruby1.9.1-dev make as Aptitude can't find the Ruby package.   • Why are my Opteron cores running at only 75% capacity each? (25% CPU idle)

    We've just taken delivery of a powerful 32-core AMD Opteron server with 128Gb. We have 2 x 6272 CPU's with 16 cores each. We are running a big long-running java task on 30 threads. We have the NUMA optimisations for Linux and java turned on. Our Java threads are mainly using objects that are private to that thread, sometimes reading memory that other threads will be reading, and very very occasionally writing or locking shared objects. We can't explain why the CPU cores are 25% idle. I had trouble finding a clear explanation of what 'top' means by "idle" versus "wait", but I get the impression that "idle" means "no more threads that need to be run" but this doesn't make sense in our case. We're using a "Executors.newFixedThreadPool(30)". There are a large number of tasks pending and each task lasts for 10 seconds or so. I suspect that the explanation requires a good understanding of NUMA. Is the "idle" state what you see when a CPU is waiting for a non-local access? If not, then what is the explanation?

  • Why is the US international keyboard layout on Ubuntu different?

    I have been using Linux on and off for 10 years, and more recently I have spent more time with OSX. But, I still remember that in the beginning I'd choose the US international keyboard layout and it would have exactly the same output as the Windows keyboard layout (and most recently, the OSX US international layout). However, a few years ago when I installed Ubuntu, I noticed that the cedilla wasn't printed anymore (ç or Ç). This is a combination of the following keys: ' + c. Instead, what I get is the c letter. When did it start to happen, and why the difference to the behavior on the other OSes? What puzzles me even more is that there is even an "US International alternative" keyboard layout, which prints exactly the same keys! So, what's it alternative to? This has been reported as a bug back to Canonical (can't find the link now), but the keyboard layout has never changed back to what I'd expect. I know the workarounds to fix it to what I need, but I just would like to know why/when it has become different.

  • Windows 7, how to get unlock (Press Ctrl+Alt+del) prompt on all monitors?

    I have a laptop that I keep shut in a docking station as I have two screens connected to the laptop and it cannot display to both of those AND its own screen. However, when my computer locks by itself (Not when I lock it using Ctrl+Alt+Del) the login prompt is ONLY on it screen (at least its there when I open it up) and my primary external monitor is off and my other one is all black. This means to log in I have to hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and blindly enter my password--which I don't mind too much, but would prefer if I could actually see the unlock/login prompt instead of typing on a black screen. Any way to have it show the login prompt on all monitors?

    Hi, I have one problem let assume A and B are 2 view controller from A user push to B view controller,In B user starts some download by creating object C(which is NSObject class) and sets B as delegate to C(assign),now user want go back to A then dealloc of B calls object releases, C delegate fails to give call back(crashes).I want to get call and allow user to move to other view controller thats way i am retain the delegate in C class but retain of delegate is wrong ... what are all solutions ... For example: Article URL: http://test.com/prima-de-riesgo/ Image URL belonging to the article: http://test.com/prima-de-riesgo/europa/ So what I'm worried about is the repeating "prima-de-riesgo" part.     Just like the title says, what are the effects of having a "Contact us" and a "Privacy policy" on your site? I've read that it could build up your trust with Google, is this true? I've also read that some people said that you should add a noindex tag to your "Privacy policy" page, would this be a good idea? I say this because many websites have similar privacy policies, and I don't want any duplicate content issues. (For example, many people could be using the same WordPress privacy policy generator). I'm wondering the same things for the "Contact us" page as well.

  • Download Speed is 0.12 Mbps when tested with servers in U.S, but it is 0.76 Mbps when tested with local servers, normal? [closed]

    Feeling that my ISP is cheating my money ( My subscription package is 1 Mbps), I did a speed test on my internet connection using www.speedtest.net. I tried to test the connection speed on two servers, one local ( Malaysia), another in U.S. I found that while the upload speed remain constant, but the download speed is different; 0.76 Mbps for servers in Malaysia, and 0.12 Mbps for servers in U.S. I called the ISP, and they blamed it on the intercontinental signal lost. But how can it be that the speed differs by that much? If it really differs by that much than we should always take a grain of salt of what is advertised as the broadband speed because the advertised speed is not the speed we are getting. No?

  • How can we distribute a client app to other non-US businesses?

    I'm working on an app which acts as a client for our web service. We sell this service to businesses, and we want to distribute the app to their employees for free. The app will be customised for each client. If we were in the US, my understanding is that we'd ask them to enrol in the volume purchasing program, and submit a version of our app for each business, for enterprise distribution at the free price point However, the businesses aren't all in the US, so they can't enrol in the VPP. They have thousands of employees, so promo codes won't be sufficient. What are our alternatives?

  • A great option for those of us who live by virtual environments, SQL Server 2008 R2 sysprep

    For a long time when creating images for my development environment, I had to install the OS and then sysprep.  Only after that would I then create a differencing drive/image that would have SQL Server. So, the thought of having a base/core image for SQL Server as a template was not easily done.  Well, how do things change?  SQL Server 2008 R2 gives us the option now.     Paul Graham argues that: It would be great if a startup could give us something of the old Moore's Law back, by writing software that could make a large number of CPUs look to the developer like one very fast CPU. ... The most ambitious is to try to do it automatically: to write a compiler that will parallelize our code for us. There's a name for this compiler, the sufficiently smart compiler, and it is a byword for impossibility. But is it really impossible? Can someone provide a concrete example where a paralellizing compiler would solve a pain point? Web-apps don't appear to be a problem: just run a bunch of Node processes. Real-time raytracing isn't a problem: the programmers are writing multi-threaded, SIMD assembly language quite happily (indeed, some might complain if we make it easier!). The holy grail is to be able to accelerate any program, be it MySQL, Garage Band, or Quicken. I'm looking for a middle ground: is there a real-world problem that you have experienced where a "smart-enough" compiler would have provided a real benefit, i.e that someone would pay for?

    I've been seeing many questions related to Agile. There seems to be confusion between the people who are doing Agile successfully, and those of us who don't understand it. So I'm wondering if some of the successful teams would be willing to give the result of us some examples of how you succeeded. Some of the things I know I wonder What steps did you use? (ie. Talk to users, mock up, tests, code, testing, (whatever)) Tools that helped you? Did you generate any artifacts, other than a working implementation? How did you prevent spaghetti architecture / code? How do you pass along to new team members, or is the team stable for the project How did you determine exit criteria, or was it open ended. (Scope of project?) Did you do this as contracting? How did you develop a contract up-front? Did the business do any up front work? Or did they come to the table with "We want to implement a "bleh bleh blah"? What types of tests did you use? Unit, Integration, UAT? Or did the process make some/all of those unnecessary? Bonus: Do you have an situations / links to "How To" Agile articles, books, etc? Wiki, describes what but not how (to the uninitiated) At least to me, not a duplicate

    So I upgraded my ubuntu to 12.10 but the Windows 7 problem seems to have happened not after doing the upgrade but later. I am not sure. Ubuntu is running fine, but how can I recover my Windows7? I tried running BootRepair in Ubuntu but it keeps scanning system endlessly... If I recover Windows with the Windows DVD I assume I will lose the GRUB menu and then not possible to start Ubuntu. How do i then proceed to recover the GRUB? Can I recover using the Ubuntu DVD?

He quoted us $1,600 for a project… and now that the project is done, he sent us a bill for $4,000. He didn't let us know he went over the quote… he just continued working without notifying us. Now he expects us to pay the $4,000 when he originally told us, via email, that it would NOT be more than $1,600. What options do I have?
