• Why do garbage collectors freeze execution?

  I was thinking about garbage collection on the way home, and I began wondering, why does the garbage collector totally freeze execution of a program? Personally I would have designed it to block any threads which try to allocate a new object, but threads which were running would be left alone. I can't imagine any situation where this would be a problem compared to how a garbage collector currently works.

• Ubuntu: Graphics freeze

  We have recently updated a java application which runs on an Ubuntu PC, and are now experiencing a graphics problem that we didn't encounter before. The system is running constantly, and randomly maybe twice a month but sometimes within a few days the systems graphics will freeze, and the gnome panels are frozen. My guess is that it's somehow video driver or motherboard related, but I don't know how to go about diagnosing this problem to narrow down which of the two is the culprit. Additional information re: cooling Regarding cooling... I've not installed any after-market cooling systems aside from two regular fans I scavenged from an older computer. The fan atop the CPU is the one that shipped with it. One of the two scavenged fans I added it located at the bottom tower of the corner, in an attempt to create some airflow from front to back. The second fan is pointed directly at the two video cards. SpeedFan installation and readings Per studiohack's suggestion, I installed SpeedFan, which provided the following temperature readings: GPU: 63C GPU: 65C System: 76C CPU: 64C AUX: 36C Core 0: 78C Core 1: 76C Core 2: 79C Core 3: 79C Update #3: Another Lockup :-( Well, I had another lockup last night. :-( SpeedFan reported the CPU temp at 38 C when it happened, and there was no spike in temperature leading up to the freeze. One thing I notice is that the freeze seems more likely to happen if I am watching a video. In fact, of the last 5 freezes over the past month, 4 of them have been while watching a video on Flickr. Not necessarily the same video, but a video nevertheless. I don't know if this is just coincidence or if it means anything. (As an aside, each night before bedtime my 2 year old daughter sits on my lap and watches some home videos on Flickr and, in the last month, has learned the phrase, "Uh oh, computer broke.") Update #4: MemTest86 and 3DMark06 Test Results: Per suggestions in the comments, I ran the MemTest86 overnight and it cycled through the 8 GB of memory 5 times without error. I also ran the 3DMark06 test without a problem (see my scores at http://3dmark.com/3dm06/15163549). So... what now? :-) Any further suggestions on what to check? Resolution I have never did figure out the particular problems, but based on the suggestions here and elsewhere, I'm presuming it was a motherboard issue. In any event, I recently upgraded my system, buying a new motherbeard, PSU, CPU, and RAM, and that new rig has been working splendidly the past several weeks. I am using the same graphic cards as in the old setup, so I think it's safe to reason that they weren't the cause of the problem.

• Lack of Virtual Memory - confusion

  Specs ahead of time: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.00 GHz / 1 GB PC-3200 DDR RAM / 160 GB IDE HDD / 128 MB GeForce 6200 AGP / FIC AM37 / 350W PSU / Windows XP Pro SP3 So, XP has pop-ups saying that I am low on virtual memory. However, I have a program called SmartRAM (part of Advanced SystemCare by IObit) and it displays CPU & Page File Usage and Free Physical and Virtual Memory. That program shows that I have at least 2000 MB free virtual memory on my machine when the XP pop-ups say that I'm low on virtual memory. First off, would a complete lack of virtual memory cause my computer to freeze? Secondly, how can I solve this lack of virtual memory? (A complete reformat is possible but can't be done immediately...) Thanks in advance.

• Computer freezes for 2+ seconds, mouse still moves

  I have this problem on my workstation. The computer would effectively freeze for 2-5 seconds for no apparent reason, then continue as normal. While frozen the mouse would still be movable, but only on one of screens in my multi-screen setup. What can be the likely cause. System: CPU: i7-920 Memory: 12G of Patriot DDR3, 6 modules OS: SLED 11, Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop, using Gnome Main board: Asus P6T Video: two Nvidia 9500GT connected to three displays I am using memory at recommended settings of 8-8-8-1333. It has an XMP profile. Th CPU is a bit overclocked to 3.3 GHz, but my cooling more than allows for it. I ran the computer with all overclocks off and lower memory speed but the issue was still there. Any ideas? Where should I start looking?

  I've had an issue for the past few months, but I rarely restart so it hasn't caused too much trouble. Basically, when I start up my Mac (iMac10,1 - 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.6.3) everything proceeds as usual until I reach the login window. The login window displays normally, but keyboard and mouse input seem to be ignored. This condition persists for around 5 minutes at which time everything goes back to normal. While the login window is frozen my second monitor appears entirely blue, the second monitor receives a background as soon as the login window becomes responsive. If I startup while holding SHIFT the problem still occurs, but the freeze is much shorter. Looking through my logs I see no activity during the time that the login window is frozen. I've attempted to repair disk permissions, and gone through every possible maintenance option in Cocktail.

  For some reason, when I go to links the pages seem slow and heavy. It also has a lot of lag spikes between page loads. Basically it seems to freeze then load it all at once fast. I'm currently using Firefox 25. But when I use the same Chrome version, it seems to be very fast and smooth page loading. The CPU it takes on average is about 400,000k. • Browsing freezes after installing SP2 on Vista

  After installing SP2 on Vista 32-bit HP laptop, all browsers (Firefox, IE, Maxthon) periodically freeze randomly. It occurs when opening a new webpage. It might happen after 45 minutes of browsing, or 3 minutes. The only way to get out of it is to right click the taskbar, "end program", and say "close now" when it tries to search for a solution. Or occasionally, I have to hard reboot. It doesn't seem to correlate with any one particular type of webpage, but I'm assuming that something being loaded doesn't play well with my system. I would uninstall SP2, but it fixed several even more annoying system problems I'd had with my computer.

  Hello Everyone, I have a problem on a brand new Windows 7 Lenovo T510 intel I5/4gb ram. When I got the Laptop, right off the bat i noticed that it would freeze up often on th most simple tasks. After a while I got fed up and reinstalled. All that is installed currently is AVG/Firefox/Office. I Rebooted after installing those things and when I try to open Firefox it freezes just trying to open. Ive tried a few other things and it freezes all the time. Any Ideas what it could be?

• Computer temporarily freezes and then resumes

  This happens on ALL operating systems (7, Ubuntu, etc.). What happens is everything for 1-3 seconds becomes unresponsive, I then hear what sounds like my other internal hard drive 'spinning up', and then viola everything is responsive again. Note: Already ran SMART tests, no issues at all. I think issue is that the HDD spins down and when need it gets 'turned-on' (OS settings turn off HDD's after 20 mins of inactivity) and because my pagefile is on the other HDD it causes OS to temporarily freeze.   Is there any way to zoom in, in the System Internals Process Explorer graph? Background I'm trying to work out why my PC freezes/locks up for about a second (the pointer does not move) every so often. This has only been happening for the last 2 days.   I'm having a frustrating problem with browsers on OS windows 7 home premium. IE 10: My web browsing works ok for a while and then pages freeze and tab at top says "Waiting for ...' and never loads. Strangely I can still get to Google search results but if I click anything it freezes. Chrome freezes too and says 'The page has become unresponsive ...kill page' Safari stops also. I have tried clearing cookies, cache, turning off Bitdefender firewall and nothing apart from a restart fixes it. consequently I am forced to restart my computer several times a day to stop this browser hang. I have no idea what could be causing this ..any help greatly appreciated.

• Ubuntu server 9.10 freezes up after ~10 minutes - unconventional

  There is a topic by essentially the same name, but my answer leads to another question which I would like answered so... My case is as follows: I connect through SSH to my server... no problems for many months on Ubuntu Server 9.04. Eventually I decided to updgrade and straight away I get the 10 minutes freeze problem. I went through all the possible fixes (many can be found here but my quick fix, the only that worked, leaves me with no real answer as to why and how to properly correct it... As ridiculous as it sounds... while I leave a keyboard plugged in... it runs without flaw. Can anyone make sense of this? For the sake of completeness, (although none of the following made any difference upon subsequent completion), some of the permanent changes I have made while trying to correct the issue are: replacing samba config file with 9.04 backup, booting with noapic and modifying sysctl.conf, just uncommenting additional settings for enhanced security.

• Bullet physics engine, how to freeze an object?

  Using Bullet 2.76 I'm trying to freeze an object (rigid body) so that it instantly stops moving, but still responds to collisions. I tried setting it's activation state to DISABLE_SIMULATION, but then it's virtually nonexistent to other objects. Furthermore, if objects "collide" with it when it's disabled, strange things begin to happen (object's falling through static bodies, etc.) I suppose, temporarily converting it to a static rigid body could work, but is there an existing "native" way to achieve this on Bullet's side? Edit: Is there a way to turn off gravity for a specific object?

  I am developing a Phonegap app with JQuery mobile with their latest stable versinos (Phonegap 3 and JQM 1.3.2) for Android platform. My app downloads feeds from Google Feeds API and saves in a SQLite database. But whenever it starts fetching and saving data from the web (the no of feeds that download at a time can be many), the other functionality such as button events halt and freeze. To be precise the a button that opens and closes a panel does not either open or close the panel until the data fetching stops. How am I supposed to solve this issue? • Win 7 running slowly with low CPU usage and memory

  I have a relatively new (under 2 yrs old) windows 7 machine. It has 9GB of RAM, and an i7 core CPU (930 @ 2.8GHz w/ 8 CPUs). After about 8 months since a clean install, I noticed my computer was running slowly. I figure it was fragmentation etc, and I did a complete wipe & clean reinstall. However, my problems are somehow persisting. The computer is running painfully slowly (but in leaps and bounds - sometimes it will work fine for 3 hrs, then suddenly freeze up just from clicking the start button). The 'freezes' happen randomly - not during any especially intensive computing. I initially thought something might be eating through my CPU and/or Memory, but Task Manager indicates that neither the CPU or Memory spike. In fact, even during serious lag, CPU usage remains at less than 5% and Memory at ~ 1.5GB. It's beyond me why a fresh install on a powerful machine is performing so poorly... and it certainly is frustrating! What could be causing the poor performance, and what can I do to fix it?

• Get details / solve issue with a kernel panic?

  I have a Lenovo T430 running Linux Mint 13 (MATE): joseph:~$ uname -a Linux joseph-T430-LM 3.2.0-23-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 20:39:51 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I installed Mint immediately after getting the laptop about two weeks ago, and have noticed that about once a day, the computer will completely freeze up- I can't use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart X, I can't use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get a text only terminal, can't move mouse, can't type, and if any music was playing it just gets stuck in about a 1-second loop. There is a Windows partition, but I haven't had any issues in Windows. I couldn't find a common thread between the freezes, they were seemingly random (sometimes right after I clicked the mouse, sometimes not; sometimes with Pandora/flash being used, sometimes not, etc). I assume they're kernel panics since it completely locks up, but the laptop doesn't have a capslock or scroll lock LED. It is on a dock and I do have a USB keyboard, but the scroll lock/capslock lights do not flash when it happens (not sure if this is indicating its not a kernel panic, or if the kernel panic just wouldn't illuminate the LEDs on a usb keyboard attached to a laptop dock). This was annoying but not terrible. However, I've found a way to reproduce it. I have a particular CSV file that when I open up in LibreOffice Calc and scroll around, the same thing happens- complete lock up. I really need to use this file, so I'd like to fix the issue, but at the least it's given me a test case to work with. So, having a case where I can cause this issue, what can I do to better find out what's going on? I've looked in /var/log/syslog but haven't found anything seemingly useful. Any thoughts?

• Acer Aspire One (mini) mfgd 9/03 locks up also when plugged in

  My problem is almost the same as the Toshiba user (Toshiba A205-5804 freezes when plugged in): Well I have a Toshiba A205-5804 and the problem is that the screen freezes anytime I plug the pc into the external power supply, not as most of the computers having the same issue, my computer DOES freeze in safe mode, and I really can't bear this problem for much longer... It's not an overheat problem, the computer is not getting hot or anything related, I've tried already to change the AC adapter, to boot only with AC and no battery, and also all of these suggestions: The only difference in my case is: I can be using the battery and when it runs down, I can just close the lid and the system goes into hibernation mode. I then plug it in and let it charge. When I think it's finally charged, I can UNPLUG it, open the lid and all is running fine on the battery again. Note: the system was NOT shut down and it still runs as long as I remove the power plug before opening the lid. I have ALL the same issues as the other Toshiba user, also. I was a tech for 9 yrs in my own business and this one has not only stumped me, but anyone I have asked has never heard of this problem. Every repair center wants to charge me for diagnosis, even is they cannot fix it. I would really like to run this system along side of my new Acer Aspire 17" laptop as I need it to finish my grad school work. Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanx, Laurie Ann

I noticed when I turned it on the laptop would not do anything for a min or two (the fan would run up and stop, power led would shine and some cd rom activity then stop). It would sit there with a black screen. Suddenly after a random number of minutes (between 1-20mins!) the Acer BIOS screen would display and POST would happen before booting into Windows XP. It has frozen in XP at various times and pointed towards a CPU fault and over heating. The fan was on its last legs, sounded like a car engine, so I replaced this. Still same issues. I next replaced the CPU like for like. Same problems. Also applied new thermal paste between the cpu and heatsink, when running the fan kicks in occasionally (not as often as I thought it would) and I left it playing mp3, online radio and updating to service pack 3 and it wouldnt freeze. shutting down ok, cold start, not ok. Waits again before showing the BIOS screen. The hard disk was also making a screaming noise (SMART test and chkdsk passed) but I also replaced this. The laptop powers up with and without the battery so dont think its a battery issue. Running out of ideas and wondered if anyone had any advice. Thanks

• XP Pro freezes on welcome screen

  I have a problem that sounds much the same as http://superuser.com/questions/83101/how-to-diagnose-a-freeze-on-startup-in-windows-xp About every 2nd or 3rd boot, XP-Pro freezes on the Welcome page (the one showing the user name icons). The mouse moves the cursor OK, but clicking on an icon does nothing, and neither does any keystroke. If you press too many keys there is a beep and after that the mouse won't move the cursor anymore. The work-around is always to reboot into Safe mode and request a CHKDSK /R After this, the next boot is fine. There are no related entries in the Event log when the problem occurs. The only two entries are: "Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 5.01. 2600 Service Pack 3 Multiprocessor Free." "The Event log service was started." Update 1: Many thanks for that but I found no problems with any diagnostics I have run. But, I have managed to locate, and code round, the source of the problem - which is with whatever processing goes on behind the XP Welcome (as opposed to "classic") login screen. Unfortunately, having classic login means you don't get the useful Fast User Switching (FUS) login/switch mode. So, to retain this, my fix is: Add a Windows shutdown script (using gpedit.msc) to force "classic" mode for the first logon after next XP startup, by running: reg add "hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" /v LogonType /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f Add a Scheduled Task to run at User Logon that enables Welcome screen (and hence FUS) by running the same command with 1 instead of 0 after the /d flag. The task is run as a privileged user (who can run "reg add").
