  • "Address already in use" error from socket bind, when ports are not being used

    - by Ivan Novick
I can not bind (using C or python sockets) to any port in the range: 59969-60000 Using lsof, netstat and fuser I do not see any processes using these ports. Other ports such as 59900-59968 and 60001-60009 I can bind to them. My OS: is CentOS release 5.5 (Final) 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 There must be something missing? Anyone have any idea how to debug why this port range is not usable? Cheers, Ivan

  • rhel/centos vs. ubuntu (possibly other debian-based systems) linux in handling duplicate ips in the same subnet

    - by johnshen64
This has bothered me for quite a while but I never found out why or how to change the behavior. ip duplicates could be caused by typos or dhcp errors etc., but they do occur from time to time. in rpm-based systems such as centos, the old server with the duplicate ip wins, and the new server will get an error in bringing up the nic (ip address already used). this is somewhat harmless because we can just fix the system that is coming up. ubuntu only the other hand happily grabs the used ip for itself and leave the old server/device without a valid ip. this is the more dangerous behavior because it causes outages. what i want is to change the ubuntu behavior to that of the centos/rhel so would appreciate any help.

  • Dedicated GPU in Dell PowerEdge C1100

    - by Eli Gundry
We recently purchased a Dell PowerEdge C1100 off lease with the initention of using it for graphics processing. We installed an AMD HD 7000 series GPU in it that runs off of board power and it sends video to the display. That said, the video is very choppy, leading us to belive that the onboard video is doing all the processing and sending it to the card. Is there any way to either disable the VGA on this server or tell the OS to only use the dedicated card. More info: The server is running REHL 6.4 The graphics running the proprietary AMD drivers The video card only works in OS and does not show the BIOS on boot (we know that it's impossible to change this) Any ideas, guys? Update We are now thinking that the GPU is doing the graphics processing, but not working at the full speed of the PCI bus. Which is odd, because it is an x16 slot, but probably optimized to use a RAID card (if that makes any sense). Is there any way to remedy the choppy graphics on this server?

  • Reversing an lvreduce of LVM to original size

    - by praspa
On a RHEL system that uses LVM 2 with 4K blocks. Have been successful in reducing the LV, but trying to get steps to reverse the operation so that the LV returns to its original size. Using these steps to reduce the LV by 1GB, # umount /foo # e2fsk -f /dev/mylvm/foo # resize2fs /dev/mylvm/foo <Current LV Block count - 1GB/4K> # lvreduce --size <Current # GB - 1GB> /dev/mylvm/foo Then to reverse the reduction # lvextend --size <Original #GB> /dev/mylvm/foo # resize2fs /dev/mylvm/foo The reversal gets close to the orignal size. A 'df -h' reports that it seems to be about ~ 0.1GB shy of the original size. Using these utilities, is there a better procedure to shrink and grow the LV so that the original state can be recovered effectively?

  • NTPD issue - syncs then slowly loses ground

    - by ethrbunny
RHEL 5 workstation. Has been running smoothly for years. I did a 'pup' recently and followed with a nice, cleansing reboot. Afterwards the system had some startup issues: namely MySQL refused to start. It just went "...." for 5-10 minutes before I did another boot and skipped that step (using 'interactive'). This was the only service that didn't wan't to start normally. So now that the system is booted I've found that it doesn't want to stay in sync with the NTP master and after 48 hours is refusing any SSH other than root. NTPD: this service starts normally and gets a lock on 4 servers. Almost immediately it starts to lose ground and now (after 3 days) is almost 40 hours behind. If I stop/start the service it gets the lock, resets the system clock and starts losing ground again. The 'hwclock' is set properly and maintains its time. Login: when I (re)start the ntp server I am able to login normally. I assume this problem is due to losing sync with LDAP. This appears to be verified by LDAP errors in /var/log/messages. Suggestions on where to look? ADDENDA: Tried deleting the 'drift' file. After a bit it gets recreated with 0.000. from /var/log/messages: Jan 17 06:54:01 aeolus ntpdate[5084]: step time server 129.95.96.10 offset 30.139216 sec Jan 17 06:54:01 aeolus ntpd[5086]: ntpd [email protected] Tue Oct 25 12:54:17 UTC 2011 (1) Jan 17 06:54:01 aeolus ntpd[5087]: precision = 1.000 usec Jan 17 06:54:01 aeolus ntpd[5087]: Listening on interface wildcard, 0.0.0.0#123 Disabled Jan 17 06:54:01 aeolus ntpd[5087]: Listening on interface wildcard, ::#123 Disabled Jan 17 06:54:01 aeolus ntpd[5087]: Listening on interface lo, ::1#123 Enabled Jan 17 06:54:01 aeolus ntpd[5087]: Listening on interface eth0, fe80::213:72ff:fe20:4080#123 Enabled Jan 17 06:54:01 aeolus ntpd[5087]: Listening on interface lo, 127.0.0.1#123 Enabled Jan 17 06:54:01 aeolus ntpd[5087]: Listening on interface eth0, 10.127.24.81#123 Enabled Jan 17 06:54:01 aeolus ntpd[5087]: kernel time sync status 0040 Jan 17 06:54:02 aeolus ntpd[5087]: frequency initialized 0.000 PPM from /var/lib/ntp/drift Jan 17 06:54:02 aeolus ntpd[5087]: system event 'event_restart' (0x01) status 'sync_alarm, sync_unspec, 1 event, event_unspec' (0xc010) You can see the 30 second offset. • Help setting up a secondary authoritative DNS server.

    - by GLB03
We have three Authoritative DNS servers and three recursive/caching DNS servers on my campus. Authoritative servers DNS1- Windows 2003 DNS2- Old Red Hat ----- Replacing w/ newer version DNS3- Windows 2008 (I installed) Caching and Recursive resolvers servers Server1- Windows 2003 Server2- CentOS 5.2 (I installed) Server3- CentOS 5.3 (I installed) I am replacing DNS2 with a newer Red Hat version, but have no documentation on how it was implemented. I have setup caching and windows authoritative servers, but not a linux secondary authoritative server. I have a perl script from the original server that pulls data from our DNS1 server. We use DJBDNS and TinyDNS on our linux servers. Our Network Engineer says the DNS2 server I am replacing is an authoritative server that doesn't need to be caching, but the only instructions I see is for an Authoritative server that does caching as well. Can someone point me in the right directions. I thought I was on the right track with using these instructions but when I query my new dns server I get "No response from server", I have temporarily disabled iptables to eliminate it from being an issue. ps -aux | grep dns avahi 3493 0.0 0.2 2600 1272 ? • Why is this file hidden when you run ls?

    - by luckytaxi
    For a few weeks now I couldn't figure out why I wasn't able to delete this one particular file. As root I can, but my shell script runs as a different user. So I go run ls -la and it's not there. However, if I call it as a parameter, it shows up! Sure enough, the owner is root, hence I'm not able to delete. Notice, 6535 is missing ... [root@server]# ls -la 653* -rw-rw-r-- 1 svn svn 24002 Mar 26 01:00 653 -rw-rw-r-- 1 svn svn 7114 Mar 26 01:01 6530 -rw-rw-r-- 1 svn svn 8653 Mar 26 01:01 6531 -rw-rw-r-- 1 svn svn 6836 Mar 26 01:01 6532 -rw-rw-r-- 1 svn svn 3308 Mar 26 01:01 6533 -rw-rw-r-- 1 svn svn 3918 Mar 26 01:01 6534 -rw-rw-r-- 1 svn svn 3237 Mar 26 01:01 6536 -rw-rw-r-- 1 svn svn 3195 Mar 26 01:01 6537 -rw-rw-r-- 1 svn svn 27725 Mar 26 01:01 6538 -rw-rw-r-- 1 svn svn 263473 Mar 26 01:01 6539 Now it shows up if you call it directly. Can any one guide me, please?

  • Make cloudera-vm work on Oracle VM VirtualBox

    - by ????? ????????
I downloaded this and the instructions say: Important: You must enable the I/O APIC in order to use 64-bit mode. (See http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch03.html.) On newer versions of VirtualBox, it may default to using SATA as the disk interface. This can cause a kernel panic in the VM. Switching to the IDE driver solves this problem. I am running this on Red Hat 64-bit mode (I've also tried on Ubuntu 64-bit with the same result). I pointed to the cloudera-vm image as a startup disk for the VM. I am getting this message: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine ClouderaDevelopment. VT-x features locked or unavailable in MSR. (VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED). Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

  • getting input/output error from NFS client on RHEL5

    - by Andrew Watson
i have two RHEL5 boxes on a private network together (192.168.2.0/24) and I am trying to export a file system from one to the other but I keep getting the following error: mount.nfs: Input/output error on the client side I see this output: mount: trying 192.168.2.101 prog 100003 vers 3 prot tcp port 2049 mount: trying 192.168.2.101 prog 100005 vers 3 prot tcp port 960 and on the server side I see this: Sep 20 14:14:32 omicron mountd[18739]: authenticated mount request from 192.168.2.87:635 for /srv/nfs/web (/srv/nfs/web) but that's all. I opened up iptables so that the whole 192.168.2.0/24 network is allowed to communicate freely but the public side is locked down to 22,80 etc.... any ideas?

  • CentOS default never fsck root partition on start up?

    - by wwwpanda
Most documentation or sites will say use "tune2fs -l " to check if the system will do fsck on the system partitions on next boot, in particular, should look at "Mount count" and "Maximum mount count" values. However, I notice for default CentOS 5 or 6 installation, when I check against the root partition, I always noticed something like this from tune2fs output: ... Mount count: 91 Maximum mount count: -1 Last checked: Thu Oct 29 18:48:14 2009 Check interval: 0 (<none>) ... i.e. the max. mount count is set to "-1". That makes me wonder does it mean CentOS (or Red Hat) won't check the root partition at all? I check the fstab, the last number for root partition is still "1" as usual. If the OS does fsck the root partition during startup, how can I tell when (i.e. after how many reboots or when) will the OS will start fsck the root parition during startup?

  • Setting up Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server as a mail exchange server

    - by Syedur
I am a Unix/Linux/Windows Server noob. So, keep that in mind before you throw your stones at my glass house. :P I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine that's acting as domain controller, Server A. It's also running a DNS server. I have a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5.3, Server B that is intended for mail server. In order for the mail delivery to happen, I understand that I have to set an MX record on Server A and point it to Server B. Well, I did. I manually added a host name on Server A and pointed to Server B's IP address. Then I added an MX record and pointed it to the host name. That didn't do the trick. After taking the above steps, I used the "dig" command on Server B to lookup the MX record coming back from Server A and it wasn't what I was expecting. What am I doing wrong here? I have noticed that... my Windows machines that are joined to the domain (Server A) are listed under the host names. The machines that are not joined to the domain are not list. This is fine, I am not worried about this. What does concern me, do I have to join the Server B to domain in order for Server A to recognize as a valid host and forward the MX properly? If so, some simple steps on how to join Server B to the domain would also help.

  • Different output by df and du

    - by user1263746
I have an old RHEL 5.5 Box, When I fire df -kh I see that /var is of 49 GB with 100 % usage. But then I go inside the /var cd /var and I fire du -kh I see that only total 300 MBs are used. I am not able to get it. Is is possible that this partition is shared with different partition? I see that /opt is also of 49 GB. I think that they are same partition. I need to free /var to start mysql but there is hardly anything to be deleted. Any pointers?

  • Kickstart based installation of RHEL 6.4 from USB

    - by Peter
I want to setup some brand new servers with RHEL 6.4. Servers do not have DVD, so, I have to use USB for the installation. I already have a custom ISO with a kickstart file that I use on servers with DVD flawlessly. I used iso2usb to move the ISO t? my USB. When I boot from the USB, the ks file is found, anaconda starts, but then stops with the following error: "The installation source given by device ['sda1'] could not be found. Please check your parameters and try again" Notes: The USB IS the sda. My custom ISO file is renamed to linux.iso from iso2usb and it is present in the root directory of the USB. • How to add LDAP user to existing local group in RHEL?

    - by Highway of Life
I'm attempting to add some of our LDAP users to a locally defined group on our RHEL server, however I get an error stating that the LDAP user is not found in /etc/passwd. What would be the best way to allow LDAP users to be added to local groups? My feeling is that this must be done manually. I could edit: /etc/group and add the LDAP group to the list. • KVM Guest installed from console. But how to get to the guest's console?

    - by badbishop
I'm trying to install a fully virtualized guest (Fedora 14 x86_64) on KVM (RHEL 6), using command-line only (both hypervisor and guest). It goes without errors, and without a tangible result . I'd like to know how to do a text-only installation. So, here's what I've done: # virt-install \ --name=FE --ram=756 --vcpus=1 \ --file=/var/lib/libvirt/images/FE.img --network bridge:br0 \ --nographics --os-type=linux \ --extra-args='console=tty0' -v \ --cdrom=/media/usb/Fedora-14-x86_64-Live-Desktop.iso Starting install... Creating domain... | 0 B 00:00 Connected to domain FE Escape character is ^] ÿ Now what? As I understand after googling for a couple of days, I should see the guest's output from the text installation, but nothing happens. virt-viewer cannot connect to it, kindly suggesting that I explore all the options by adding --help (which I did). If I reconnect with virsh, I see this: Domain installation still in progress. You can reconnect to the console to complete the installation process. • Why does my $LD_LIBRARY_PATH get unset when using screen with bash?

    - by UltraNurd
This is related to http://superuser.com/questions/27376/why-does-my-ld-library-path-get-unset-launching-terminal, but a different set of symptoms. First, /usr/bin/screen is setuid as per the other question. Second, the default shell on this system is /bin/tcsh for various historical reasons, and we're not allowed to chsh to /bin/bash, so I typically run bash manually immediately after login. Third, I almost always use screen, but I want ctrl-a ctrl-c in screen to create a new bash "tab", so I always invoke bash first. That is: {~} $ echo $SHELL /bin/tcsh {~} $ bash [~] echo $SHELL /bin/bash [~] screen -U [~] ...and when reconnecting: {~} $ echo $SHELL /bin/tcsh {~} $ screen -dUr [~] echo $SHELL /bin/bash [~] However, my $LD_LIBRARY_PATH is there in tcsh, there in bash, but empty once I run screen; it is still present if I just run screen from tcsh, but then I get new tcsh "tabs" when I use ctrl-a ctrl-c in screen. Any ideas?
