• Using NavigationService without XAML files

  I'm trying to create some pages in my Windows Phone application without the use of any XAML. Everything is working, however, I'm failing to use NavigationService/ Journal with this approach and all my attempts to utilize it are answered by the usual "No XAML was found at the location {0}'" response. Yes, I can add an almost empty XAML file to get everything working, but is this kind of boiler plate code really necessary? Is it maybe possible to use the UriMapping to map certain Uris to specific classes instead of *.xaml files?

• Wear and tear on server hard drive from filesystem polling by PHP script

  So I'm working on a discussion platform, and various clients will visit http://host/thread.php, which will render the discussion thread to date in addition to a form to submit a new post. When a new post is submitted, I would like all of the other clients with browser windows open to have it appear in near-real-time. One of the constraints of my script is that it may not use a DBMS and it must stay in the filesystem. Additionally, I can't use any PECL/PEAR extensions like inotify or anything like that for IPC. The flow will look like this: Client A requests thread.php and the thread is so far empty, but nonetheless it opens a Server-Side Event at eventPusher.php. Client B does the same. Client A fills out a post in the form and and submits (POSTs) it to subHandler.php. ??? (subHandler stores the new submission into the main thread storefile which gets read from when a fresh, new client requests thread.php, in addition to somehow signalling to the continually-running eventPusher event-source that a new comment was posted and that it should echo the event-json to the client. How, exactly, it will send this signal I'm yet unsure of, but there are a few options that I've thought of -- this is the crux of the question, so see below for more clarification) eventPusher.php happily pushes the new event to the client and it shows up soon after it was originally submitted on all clients who have the page open's screens. Now for the #4 missing-link mystery-step, I see a few problems. I mean, either way, eventPusher is gonna be doing a while loop of some sort -- it's gonna be polling something, I think that much is clear. (If that's a bad assumption please do let me know.) Now, the simplest way would be subHandler gets invoked on the form submission, writes it to the main store in addition to newComments.xml, then exits without doing anything else. Then eventPusher checks in newComments.xml every X seconds (by the way, what would be a reasonable time interval here?) and if it finds something then it emits an event to the client. Now, my fear with this is that the server's hard drive will have to constantly start spinning up. Maybe this isn't the case, perhaps it would just get cached in RAM and the linux kernel would take care of this transparently such that filesystem access doesn't actually engage the device because the kernel knows that that particular file hasn't changed since last read. * idea #2: I have no idea how to go about this, but perhaps there is a variable scope that gets stored in general RAM on the system which can be read by any process. Like if we mega-exported a bash variable so that $new_post is normally false but it gets toggled to true by subHandler, and then back to flase once it's pushed to the client. I doubt there's such a variable scope in PHP directly, but I struggle with the concept of variable scope, I just can't seem to understand it no matter what I read on it. * idea #3: eventPusher queries ps in its whileloop for another instance of itself. If there's not another eventPusher active then it's highly unlikely that new comments will be getting submitted. It's okay if this only works =90% of the time, it doesn't need to be completely foolproof. * idea #4: eventPusher queries DMESG to see if that file's been written to recently. So to sum everything up, I need to have inter-php-script-communication in near-real-time that will work on a standard mod_php shared hosting setup without any elevated privileges, PHP addon modules, or other system adjustments that can't be done from the PHP script itself at runtime. With*out* spinning up the drive more than a few times. No SQL servers either. Apologies if my english isn't the best, I'm still trying to improve on it.

• My 2009 MacBook Logic board failed - options to proceed and how difficult?

  Scannerz just gave my MacBook logic board a big fat F! I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion about 3 weeks ago. The system was running short of memory so I upgraded it. The system was running fine for about 2 weeks. Yesterday the thing started acting erratic. A lot of spinning beach balls, delays, and then some errors saying files couldn't be read to or from the drive. I figured the drive was going because the system is over 3 years old. I ran Scannerz on it and it indicated a lot of errors and irregularities. I rescanned it in cursory mode, and none of them were repeatable, just showing up all over the place in different regions of the scan. I went through the docs and they implied either an I/O cable was bad, a connection was damaged, or the logic board was bad. I tossed on my backup of Snow Leopard that I cloned from the original hard drive because I figured Mountain Lion was to blame and booted from the USB drive with the clone on it. It wasn't. I performed scans on every single port, and errors and irregularities that couldn't be repeated were showing up on every single one of them. I then, for kicks, put a CD into the CD player. Scannerz doesn't test optical drives but I figured surely that will work. No it won't. More spinning beach balls and messages telling me it can't be read. It was working fine 3 days ago. I know a lot of people don't like MacBook's, but mine's been great, at least until now. It was working great even with Mountain Lion after the upgrade. The system is a mid-2009 MacBook. In my opinion, it's a complete waste to toss this system. The display is too good, the keyboard works great, and it still looks good, plus this type of MacBook still uses the FireWire 400 port and I use that for Time Machine backups. I've tried reseating the RAM, it didn't do anything. I shut the system down and put in the old RAM, booted to Snow Leopard, and the problems persist. Here are my questions: The Scannerz documentation somewhere said something about the Airport card not being seated properly, but when I go to iFixit, it's apparent, at least I think it's apparent, that this isn't a slot type Airport card that the user can easily install or remove. If the cables or connections to the Airport card are bad, could they be causing this problem. How about any other connections that can be intermittent, failing or erratic? Any type of resets that I could possibly do to get rid of this? For any of those that have replaced a logic board on a MacBook, if this really is the culprit, are there any "gotcha's" I need to be aware of? As an FYI, I replaced the hard drive on an old iBook @500MHz that I had a long time ago, and I replaced the drive on a 1.33GHz PowerBook about 6 years ago. You have to be careful, but using some of the info on web sites like iFixit it's not that hard. Time consuming, but not that hard. The Intel based MacBook's to me look like they're easier to service than either of those. I'm thinking about getting a unit off of eBay that matches mine but has something else wrong with it, like a busted display. I REFUSE to buy a new system. A guy at my office has a 2007 Mac Pro and he can't upgrade to Mountain Lion because his system is "obsoleted." That's ridiculous. If you pay nearly $7,500 for a system it shouldn't be trash just because Apple decides they don't have enough money (sorry for the soap box, but it's true, IMO!) Any input is appreciated.

• Quaternion Camera Orbiting around a Sphere

  Background: I'm trying to create a game where the camera is always rotating around a single sphere. I'm using the DirectX D3DX math functions in C++ on Windows. The Problem: I cannot get both the camera position and orientation both working properly at the same time. Either one works but not both together. Here's the code for my quaternion camera that revolves around a sphere, always looking at the centerpoint of the sphere, ... as far as I understand it (but which isn't working properly): (I'm only going to present rotation around the X axis here, to simplify this post) Whenever the UP key is pressed or held down, the camera should rotate around the X axis, while looking at the centerpoint of the sphere (which is at 0,0,0 in the world). So, I build a quaternion that represents a small angle of rotation around the x axis like this (where 'deltaAngle' is a small enough number for a slow rotation): D3DXVECTOR3 rotAxis; D3DXQUATERNION tempQuat; tempQuat.x = 0.0f; tempQuat.y = 0.0f; tempQuat.z = 0.0f; tempQuat.w = 1.0f; rotAxis.x = 1.0f; rotAxis.y = 0.0f; rotAxis.z = 0.0f; D3DXQuaternionRotationAxis(&tempQuat, &rotAxis, deltaAngle); ...and I accumulate the result into the camera's current orientation quat, like this: D3DXQuaternionMultiply(&cameraOrientationQuat, &cameraOrientationQuat, &tempQuat); ...which all works fine. Now I need to build a view matrix to pass to DirectX SetTransform function. So I build a rotation matrix from the camera orientation quat as follows: D3DXMATRIXA16 rotationMatrix; D3DXMatrixIdentity(&rotationMatrix); D3DXMatrixRotationQuaternion(&rotationMatrix, &cameraOrientationQuat); ...Now (as seen below) if I just transpose that rotationMatrix and plug it into the 3x3 section of the view matrix, then negate the camera's position and plug it into the translation section of the view matrix, the rotation magically works. Perfectly. (even when I add in rotations for all three axes). There's no gimbal lock, just a smooth rotation all around in any direction. BUT- this works even though I never change the camera's position. At all. Which sorta blows my mind. I even display the camera position and can watch it stay constant at it's starting point (0.0, 0.0, -4000.0). It never moves, but the rotation around the sphere is perfect. I don't understand that. For proper view rotation, the camera position should be revolving around the sphere. Here's the rest of building the view matrix (I'll talk about the commented code below). Note that the camera starts out at (0.0, 0.0, -4000.0) and m_camDistToTarget is 4000.0: /* D3DXVECTOR3 vec1; D3DXVECTOR4 vec2; vec1.x = 0.0f; vec1.y = 0.0f; vec1.z = -1.0f; D3DXVec3Transform(&vec2, &vec1, &rotationMatrix); g_cameraActor->pos.x = vec2.x * g_cameraActor->m_camDistToTarget; g_cameraActor->pos.y = vec2.y * g_cameraActor->m_camDistToTarget; g_cameraActor->pos.z = vec2.z * g_cameraActor->m_camDistToTarget; */ D3DXMatrixTranspose(&g_viewMatrix, &rotationMatrix); g_viewMatrix._41 = -g_cameraActor->pos.x; g_viewMatrix._42 = -g_cameraActor->pos.y; g_viewMatrix._43 = -g_cameraActor->pos.z; g_viewMatrix._44 = 1.0f; g_direct3DDevice9->SetTransform( D3DTS_VIEW, &g_viewMatrix ); ...(The world matrix is always an identity, and the perspective projection works fine). ...So, without the commented code being compiled, the rotation works fine. But to be proper, for obvious reasons, the camera position should be rotating around the sphere, which it currently is not. That's what the commented code is supposed to do. And when I add in that chunk of code to do that, and look at all the data as I hold the keys down (using UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT to rotate different directions) all the values look correct! The camera position is rotating around the sphere just fine, and I can watch that happen visually too. The problem is that the camera orientation does not lookat the center of the sphere. It always looks straight forward down the z axis (toward positive z) as it revolves around the sphere. Yet the values of both the rotation matrix and the view matrix seem to be behaving correctly. (The view matrix orientation is the same as the rotation matrix, just transposed). For instance if I just hold down the key to spin around the x axis, I can watch the values of the three axes represented in the view matrix (x, y, and z axes)... view x-axis stays at (1.0, 0.0, 0.0), and view y-axis and z-axis both spin around the x axis just fine. All the numbers are changing as they should be... well, almost. As far as I can tell, the position of the view matrix is spinning around the sphere one direction (like clockwise), and the orientation (the axes in the view matrix) are spinning the opposite direction (like counter-clockwise). Which I guess explains why the orientation appears to stay straight ahead. I know the position is correct. It revolves properly. It's the orientation that's wrong. Can anyone see what am I doing wrong? Am I using these functions incorrectly? Or is my algorithm flawed? As usual I've been combing my code for simple mistakes for many hours. I'm willing to post the actual code, and a video of the behavior, but that will take much more effort. Thought I'd ask this way first.

• Effectiveness and Efficiency

  In the professional environment, i.e. at work, I am always seeking personal growth and to be challenged. The result is that my assignments, my work list, my tasks, my goals, my commitments, my [insert whatever word resonates with you] keep growing (in scope and desired impact). Which in turn means I have to keep finding new ways to deliver more value, while not falling into the trap of working more hours. To do that I continuously evaluate both my effectiveness and my efficiency. EFFECTIVENESS The first thing I check is my effectiveness: Am I doing the right things? Am I focusing too much on unimportant things? Am I spending more time doing stuff that is important to my team/org/division/business/company, or am I spending it on stuff that is important to me and that I enjoy doing? Am I valuing activities that maybe I have outgrown and should be delegated to others who are at a stage I have surpassed (in Microsoft speak: is the work I am doing level appropriate or am I still operating at the previous level)? Notice how the answers to those questions change over time and due to certain events, so I have to remind myself to revisit them frequently. Events that force me to re-examine them are: change of role, change of team/org/etc, change of direction of team/org/etc, re-org, new hires on the team that take on some of the work I did, personal promotion, change of manager... and if none of those events has occurred since the last annual review, I ask myself those at each annual review anyway. If you think you are not being effective at work, make a list of the stuff that you do and start tracking where your time goes. In parallel, have a discussion with your manager about where they think your time should go. Ultimately your time is finite and hence it is your most precious investment, don't waste it. If your management doesn't value as highly what you spend your time on, then either convince your management, or stop spending your time on it, or find different management: Lead, Follow, or get out of the way! That's my view on effectiveness. You have to fix that before moving to being efficient, or you may end up being very efficient at stuff that nobody wants you to be doing in the first place. For example, you may be spending your time writing blog posts and becoming better and faster at it all the time. If your manager thinks that is not even part of your job description, you are wasting your time to satisfy your inner desires. Nobody can help you with your effectiveness other than your management chain and your management peers - they are the judges of it. EFFICIENCY The second thing I check is my efficiency: Am I doing things right? For me, doing things right means that I deliver the same quality of work faster [than what I used to, and than my peers, and than expected of me]. The result is that I can achieve more [than what I used to, and than my peers, and than expected of me]. Notice how the efficiency goal is a more portable one. If, by whatever criteria, you think you are the best at [insert your own skill here], this can change at two events: because you have new colleagues (who are potentially better than your older ones), and it can change with a change of manager (who has potentially higher expectations). That's about it. Once you are efficient at something, you carry that with you... All you need to really be doing here is, when taking on new kinds of work that you haven't done before, try a few approaches and devise a system so that you can become efficient at this new activity too... Just keep "collecting" stuff that you are efficient at. If you think you are not being efficient at something, break it down: What are the steps you take to complete that task? How long do you spend on each step? Talk to others about what steps they take, to see if you can optimize some steps away or trade them for better steps, or just learn how to complete a step faster. Have a system for every task you take so that you can have repeatable success. That's my view on efficiency. You have to fix it so that you can free up time to do more. When you plan a route from A to B - all else being equal - you try to get there as fast as possible so why would you not want to do that with your everyday work? For example, imagine you are inefficient at processing email: You spend more time than necessary dealing with email, and you still end up with dropped email threads and with slower response times than others. How can you improve? Talk to someone that you think is good at this, understand their system (e.g. here is my email processing system) and come up with one that works for you. Parting Thoughts Are you considered, by your colleagues and manager, an effective and efficient person at your workplace? If you are, what would you change if you were asked by your management to do the job of two people? Seriously, think about that! Your immediate reaction may be "that is not possible", but it actually is. You just have to re-assess what things that were previously important will now stop being important, by discussing them with your management and reaching agreement on relative priorities. For example, stuff that was previously on your plate may now have to be delegated or dropped. Where you thought you were efficient, maybe now you have to find an even faster path to completion, perhaps keeping in mind that Perfect is the Enemy of “Good Enough”. My personal experience (from both observing others and from my own reflection) is that when folks are struggling to keep up at work it is because of two reasons: They are investing energy in stuff that they enjoy doing which the business regards as having a lower priority than a lot of other things on their plate. They are completing tasks to a level of higher quality than what is required (due to personal pride) missing the big picture which almost always mandates completing three tasks at good enough quality than knocking only one of them out of the park while the other two come in late or not at all. There is a lot of content on the web, so I strongly encourage you to use your favorite search engine to read other views on effectiveness and efficiency (Bing, Google). • HP D530 Startup Error: 512 - Chassis Fan Not Detected

  I'm using the HP D530 Motherboard/CPU that I installed in a new case with a 600W PSU. There was a problem with the onboard chassis fan connector (3-wire) not supplying sufficient power to the chassis fan indicated by the fan spinning very slowly, but I never experienced the "512 Error" at boot. Also, the same fan works perfectly connected directly to the PSU. I disconnected it since I already have plenty of fans connected via the PSU directly. Since then, on startup, I get the error: "512 - Chassis Fan Not Detected" and am asked to "Press F1 to continue". This gets quite annoying since I use this machine remotely (w/ FreeNAS). What could be causing the onboard fan connector to not be giving enough power? If this is unable to be corrected, how can I make the BIOS think there's a chassis fan plugged in without actually plugging a fan into the onboard connector? Would it be possible to jumper the pins without damaging the motherboard or PSU? Thanks,Erik

• OSX Snow Leopard hangs after login

  After restoring from backup following filesystem corruption my user account hangs after login (After entering my password the login window disappears and all I get is the background and a mouse pointer, no spinning wheel of death etc ..) I can login as a different user and then logout and login as my main account (sometimes!) but this is not consistant. I can login with safemode ok and have tried deleting /System/Caches, ~/Library/Caches and removing all my ~/Library/Preferences which worked once but not again. Does anyone have an any idea which logs I can look in, if any, to see whats happening after login or any other tips? I'm using 10.6.2. Cheers.

• OS X not booting after upgrading LibXML2

  I tried upgrading the version of LibXML2 in my machine to run some propietary software. Compiled as 32-bit (-arch i386) and restarted to see if it worked. Now when I try to boot I can only get into the spinning screen and it just sits there. Restarting in verbose mode (Cmd-V) does not show any error in the process, it just freezes after "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement: initialization complete". I can't from any CD either (if I press c on startup it just spins the disk around and then stops in the same spinner screen). I've also reset the PRAM/NVRAM to discard any problems with that and it´s still not fixed. Any pointers of what might´ve gone wrong? (Latest gen MBP, running 10.6.3)

• Access Western Digital My Book World II RAID array on my Ubuntu Linux

  Hi, My WD My Book World II (Blue Rings) NAS has overheated, I think the motherboard is dead. I extracted the disks and plugged them in my desktop PC running Ubuntu Linux. The disks seems to be alive, they are spinning and the BIOS recognize them but Ubuntu is not able to boot as soon as these drives are plugged in. I got an initramfs shell after few minutes telling explaining that the root disk is not available. I suspect that one of my WD drives took the precedence on the system ? Considering that Ubuntu is able to boot and can see my Western Digital disks... is it possible to access the RAID 0 array ? How ? Many thanks for your help, regards, -- Pierre Yager

• Ubuntu 9.1 Install from Disc Stalls After "Install Ubuntu" Sleclection is Made - eMachine

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.1 from the ISO on a CD (it needs to be this version) on an eMachine with a brand new Seagate hard disk. The CD boots OK, and I choose the language. Then I am presented with the choices: Try Ubuntu Install Ubuntu.... etc, etc... I have tried the top two choices several times (trying Ubuntu and installing it), but each and every time the installation stalls and the disc stops spinning right after I hit enter after choosing the option I want. I have tried different CD/DVD drives, changing the jumpers on both CD drives, different hard drives, and nothing works. Maybe there is a BIOS setting that is choking the installation? Any help would be appreciated.

• Firefox extension to dinamically change superbar icon, similar to windows live messenger.

  With seven's new superbar, windows live messenger is now able to display your status on the bar's icon (and not on the system tray). So that got me thinking, maybe a firefox extension could do something similar. Therefore, here's my question to those who understand the workings and spinning wheels behind firefox extensions: could a firefox extension change the superbar icon to display some useful info? Does the current functionality support it? EDIT: I think my question is not really clear. I just want to know if it's theoritically possible for a firefox addon to change the superbar icon dinamically. For instance, windows live messenger changes the icon acording to your status, and gmail notifier plus changes the icon according to your unread messages count. I'm just wondering if firefox as it is right now supports an extension with that functionality. I know that no current extensions do it, and I'm not looking for a gmail notifier (that was just an example). thanks

• About HDD enclosure

  hey guys, how r u doin? I have this 3.5" IDE enclosure, and it works great, I mean I love the idea of enclosures ( not the power feeding thing :), btw can't I just insert a chargable battery to feed the power when I am unable to find an electricity block), anyway my question is, when I finish the usage of the enclosure I safely remove it when using Windows or umount when working with Linux, and after that I got confused whether to turn it off or no? when I turn it off, the HDD suddenly stop spinning as if power failure not as when it was an internal and normally shuted down the pc. So is it ok to turn it off the way I've just said??? regards, ~Abed

• External Hard-Drive Randomly Ejects; Stays On

  My 250GB I/O Magic USB external hard-drive randomly disconnects / ejects from the computer after between 2-30 minutes of use. When this happens, the blinking activity light on the front of the hdd turns off; however, the disks can still be heard spinning. Unplugging & replugging in the USB does not reconnect the device and the activity light remains unlit. The only way to continue using it is to flip off then on the power switch of the hdd. The hard-drive was formatted with MBR partition table and 2 NTFS volumes. I recently tried switching to GUID with two Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but the problem remains. This error occurs with my new Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard as well as with my DELL E520 with Windows 7 Ultimate.

• Old HP computer powers off after seconds, hard drive still spins. Power supply? Motherboard?

  Someone called me saying their computer keeps shutting off. I brought it home to troubleshoot. It's an HP Pavilion 513c. The computer powers on normally but almost immediately powers off. Sometimes it manages to make it to a fully loaded desktop and other times it powers off during the boot process. The hard drive still spins but there is no video and the CPU fans quit spinning. The power has to be unplugged before you can turn it back on again. I'm thinking it's either a motherboard or power supply issue. I don't have a spare of either component laying around to test with. Any guess on which part is more likely to be the culprit? Thanks.

  I need to download 100 GB of files (it’s in about 150 files) within a 7 day period before they expire. The download is rate-limited by the host so it takes MUCH longer than the theoretical transfer rate based on normal Internet speeds. I have a script of curl http://curl.haxx.se/docs/manpage.html commands - one line per file. I had the idea of automatically spinning up n EC2 instances, executing the command and FTPing the files to a central location, then shutting down the machines. How would I do this? I don't care whether it's Linux or Windows.

• What is the best position for power unit?

  I would like to buy new computer case. Last time I bought a computer was in 2008 and many things have changed up to day. Many new computer cases have power unit placed down, on bottom. I'm thinking about buying some of those cases, but i'm not sure about something - if power unit is placed on the bottom it can't take away hot air from the case and pump it out right? All my PC parts are silent - CPU (E8200, placed below 12cm Nochtua fan of power unit) has heat-pipe cooler with Nochtua fan spinning at only 800rpms, GPU has cooler powered by 7V instead 12 and that's why i don't want to HAVE TO place another fan to pump out hot air instead of PU placed on top. That might make some noise. So i ask someone more experienced: if i buy some computer case with PU placed down, do i HAVE TO place some fan to pump out hot air?

• Get hard drive to spin up upon mouse movement

  My storage drive which does not contain the OS stops spinning after a few minutes. This is annoying and totally defeats the purpose of having a fast access drive. The drive will NOT spin up when I use the mouse! It only spins up when accessed. However, I don't want it to spin all the time. I would like it to spin up anytime there is mouse activity so it is at the ready when I am using the computer, but go to sleep during inactivity. Can anyone think of a trick to get a secondary drive to spin up on a mouse movement?

• How to convert an image to a .dwg file

  My girlfriend is making an art project where she is having an image printed and cut out on a metal plate. The firm responsible for doing this is demanding a .dwg file (and something called polyline; some sort of setting maybe?). Neither of us have heard about this file format, and I find the information about it quite confusing. Most pages seem to link to some schetchy "FooToBarConverter" software, that I frankly don't trust. Could someone please enlighten us on what we need to do, or point to some safe and preferably free software that could do this? (An explanation of the dwg format and the polyline thing would also be much appreciated)

• How can I adapt a Dell 2001FP stand for use on newer Dell monitors?

  I find myself really disappointed with how little vertical adjustment newer Dell LCD's have. I retiring a malfunctioning Dell 2001FP. The stand on the 2001FP allows over 6 inches of vertical adjustment. Compare this to my newer monitors, a 2005FP and a SW22209, both of which allow at most 2 inches of vertical adjustment. So while the Dell 2001FP monitor is shot, the stand is not. Is there anyway to fit the stand onto the SW2209 or the 2005FP? The 2001FP stand seems to have an odd plate with three tabs on the top edge. Can I replace this?

• Extend my LAN network

  i have a patch panel and hardwiring already setup in my office. The patch panel is 24-port and all the ports are engaged. All my switch ports are engaged. Now, I have a printer connected to a wall point (RJ45) which I want to shift to a new room where there is no LAN setup. I want to have two RJ45 wall plugs in the new room so that I can connect one RJ45 port to have my LAN in the new room and the other RJ45 wall port I want to use for my printer. There is no option other than LAN (no wireless). Please help me and tell me how do I get the two RJ45 wall plate plugs in the new room up and keep my LAN running. It is a little urgent for me. Please help.
