  • Keyboard Shortcuts in Win 7 without the CTRL + ALT

    I am knew to this site and don't know if I'm doing this correctly. I've been asked to edit my original post so I deleted my original post and starting over. I don't know why it's so hard for everyone to understand what I'm trying to do. You guys are all geniuses when it comes to computers and I'm just starting out. I started out trying to use a shortcut to display the LOCAL AREA CONNECTION window on my desktop by creating a shortcut and assigning it CTRL + , (comma). Windows didn't like that so it added ALT which ended up being CTRL + ALT + ,. Since I couldn't figure out a way to eliminate ALT as part of the shortkey keys, I am now trying a different strategy and it's not working. my latest attempt is to run the following command; ^,:: Run, explorer:: {BA126ADB-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E} Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?   • Ping, firewall or DNS problem on Win Server 2008 R2

    Hi there, I've installed windows server 2008 as a VM for the developers here to work on. Installed SQL Server 2008 as well as IIS7. I am not quite sure why, I can remote into that machine using the name I gave to it (winserverdev) but the guys that are supposed to use the bloody thing can't. One very interesting thing is that I can connect but I can't ping... not the name nor the IP address. Is there anything that I should be looking in order to make it work? Any ideas are welcome.   • Win 7 running slowly with low CPU usage and memory

    I have a relatively new (under 2 yrs old) windows 7 machine. It has 9GB of RAM, and an i7 core CPU (930 @ 2.8GHz w/ 8 CPUs). After about 8 months since a clean install, I noticed my computer was running slowly. I figure it was fragmentation etc, and I did a complete wipe & clean reinstall. However, my problems are somehow persisting. The computer is running painfully slowly (but in leaps and bounds - sometimes it will work fine for 3 hrs, then suddenly freeze up just from clicking the start button). The 'freezes' happen randomly - not during any especially intensive computing. I initially thought something might be eating through my CPU and/or Memory, but Task Manager indicates that neither the CPU or Memory spike. In fact, even during serious lag, CPU usage remains at less than 5% and Memory at ~ 1.5GB. It's beyond me why a fresh install on a powerful machine is performing so poorly... and it certainly is frustrating! What could be causing the poor performance, and what can I do to fix it?

  • Issues with partitions WIN 7

    I was trying to make some space to install linux in my HP notebook. The computer had 4 partitions, I made space shrinking one and created a new one (facepalm) using the windows partitioning tool. It show me some warning message saying something about dynamic partitions, I ingored it, and went to the linux live CD. I installed linux in the new partition, after the installation completed it told me that GRUB cannot be installed I dont remember why. So now, it doesnt boot, neither windows nor linux. After google for a while I found the diskpart command, it gives me this info: DISKPART> list disk DISK ### Status -------- --------------- DISK 0 Invalid DISKPART> select disk 0 DISKPART> select partition Partition ### TYPE ------------- -------------- Partition 1 Dynamic Data Partition 2 Dynamic Data Partition 3 Dynamic Data Partition 4 Primary <- I think I put linux here Any idea whats happening?   • Help me solve my problem with NPR Media Player

    First of, let me apologize for this getting a bit technical. Several weeks ago, I found that while using NPR's media player (e.g. click on 'Listen to the Show' - this is what I've been using as a test) the stream would suddenly halt after a minute or three. I could not get the stream to restart without reloading the page. Now, I assumed this was an issue with NPR's player and Linux (or just a bug in their stuff in general) so I began to dig, the following is what I have tried to date (please note, the tldr; option is to skip to the latest thing as I think I know what is causing the problem). Note: All testing has been done, for consistency purposes, on a clean install of Chromium with no pluggins running. My machine is Ubuntu 10.10x64. First thing I always try, I disabled all firewall stuff on the system (UFW, default deny all, allow ssh). No change, firewall back up for all additional tests unless otherwise noted. In any case, UFW is stateful, so connections it started on a non-specified on different ports will continue to work. I deleted my ~/.macromeda and ~/.adobe folders, restarted (just to be sure) and tried. Program still froze. I decided the problem might be with my install of flash, so I purged the version I had (and the home folders again). I installed the x64 version of flash from a PPA. This had no effect. I decided that the problem might be with the version of flash, so I purged the x64 version and installed the standard x32 version that comes with Ubuntu. No luck. Back to the x64 version for consistency, I decided to set up a 64-bit mini 'clone' of my system in VirtualBox. I was able to run the media player with no problem. I rsynced (in archive mode) my home directory from my real machine to the virtual machine (with bridged networking, so it was fully visible on the network). I also used a few tricks to install ALL of the same software (and repositories) from the real machine to the virtual machine. I was still able to listen to the player. I decided that the problem was with my install (after all, it had gone through two major version upgrades). As I have /home/ on a separate partition it was easy to reinstall and use the same trick from #6 to have my system up and running again within about an hour. I continue to have issues with the NPR Media Player. By this point the weekend had come. At work, I use a wired connection while at home I use a wireless connection. For some reason I forgot that I was having problems and used the NPR Media Player over the weekend. Low and behold it worked just fine at home on wireless (note: for various reasons, I could not test this on wired at home). Following from #6, I decided that the problem was either something with the network at work or still something with my account. As the latter was easier to test, I created a new account on my system and used that at work. The Media Player worked. Any ideas, at all, what would cause this? Why only on eth0 under my main account?

  • shutdown.exe on Win Server2k3 64-bit cannot be found

    Server 2003 SP2 64-bit Verified my path settings are correct, as I can run other executables within the "system32" folder without issue. If I cd to "c:\windows\system32\" folder, and try to run "shutdown /?" I get "shutdown is not recognized as a valid..." you know - the message you get when you type a command that doesn't exist. Doing a "dir *.exe" inside the "system32" folder, also doesn't return "shutdown.exe" as one of the results. HOWEVER - if I go through Windows Explorer - there it is! I can see shutdown.exe. Also, if I go to "Start - Run" and type "shutdown /?", it works fine. So, works in the GUI, not on the command line. very strange.   • Win 7 Privilege Level (Run as administrator) via GP or command line

    Is there a way to set the Privilege Level for legacy software via group policy or on the command line? I have some legacy software, which we unfortunately cannot move away from. This software requires administrator access. I know I can go into the Properties dialog and check "Run this program as an administrator" on every single instance on every single one of my workstations, but that gets old after the 30th install. If I had my way, we would dump this software, find some software that did what we needed, was fully compliant with Win7 security best-practices and give everyone limited user accounts... However, I am not the boss, so everyone gets administrator accounts. Given that, I suppose I could just tell everyone to open the context menu and choose "Run as administrator", but we have some very, very, VERY low-tech users, and half of them might just choose "Delete" instead. Anyone know of a way to set this option on the command line? or better yet, through Group Policy?

    Is it possible in IIS 6 to administrate users as in IIS 7 (e.g. as described here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731783%28v=ws.10%29.aspx)? In IIS7 you can define users within the ASP.NET group with click on .NET users and it automatically creates a ms sql server db in background in the website directory. So far I didn't found anything about the issue, most forum questions are about how to migrate asp.net sites from IIS6 to IIS7.

  • Dual Monitor support rdp 7 to win 7 on esxi

    I am trying to RDP from a Windows 7 Professional dual monitor physical machine to a Windows 7 Professional VM hosted on esxi 4.0. I can get the spanning option to work to both monitors, but I have tried 3 different methods of connecting but have not been able to use true multiple monitors. At different times, I tried checking the "use all monitors" option, command line mstsc /multimon and added the line use multimon:i:1 to the .rdp file. None of these worked. Any ideas? The physical machine can connect to other Windows 7 physical machines with true multi monitor access. I also have the same issue when going from a 32bit RC1 machine to a Windows 7 Professional x64, but not when going in the reverse direction.   • Active Desktop cannot be restored on Win XP

    This is more of a major annoyance than anything that's stopping me from doing my work, but I somehow seem to have had Active Desktop on my work XP machine get corrupted and now can't get it back working again. I've tried browsing to C:\Documents and Settings\%my-user-name%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer and changing, deleting or replacing the Desktop.htt file, but it's not achieving anything. The error I was previously getting when trying to click the "Restore my active desktop" button was: Internet Explorer Script Error An error has occurred in the script on this page.   • Blinking cursor after repair install on Win XP

    I have an Asus Eee PC netbook which I upgraded the drive of. After some shenanigans, I was able to do a repair install from my Windows XP CD. However, I still have a blinking cursor in the upper-left-hand corner after POST. I tried going into the recovery console and doing chkdsk/fixboot/fixmbr with no effect. Any suggestions would be appreciated! (Sorry if it's inappropriate to post a followup as a new question; I'm not sure how I should do it in a way that will cause it to actually be seen).   • No win 7 users available for login after dell datasafe factory reset

    I created install discs using the Dell datasafe 2.0 backup utility in order to re-install windows on a friend's laptop (dell inspiron n5110). I ran the discs to do a factory reset. after the whole process, it booted, started loading windows 7, displayed the messages "setup is preparing your computer for first use" and "setup is checking video performance," and showed the login screen. However, there don't seem to be any active users on the machine - I opened a command prompt window to check the users on the machine. Using the command prompt (again, from the login window), i activated/enabled the administrator account, and even created another admin account, and upon logging in received several errors, couldn't load any mmc's, etc. any help would be appreciated.

    I am currently facing the problem that a linux machine running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with samba and winbindd installed is unable to join a Domain, that is managed by a Windows 2008 DC. The linux config, is probably alright, since I have successfully used it at multiple sites, running 2008 as well as 2003 DCs. The error I get ("libads/kerberos.c: Join to domain is not valid. Client credentials have been revoked"), indicates that there is a kerberos problem. Normally the linux box is supposed to authenticate via NTLM and is configured that way. The only reason I can image why it tries kerberos is that the DC is forcing it. Do you know whether there is any setting in the security policies of a window 2008 server, that would completely block NTLM, forcing kerberos? If so, where can I find this setting?

    Hey, i´ve got an Ubuntu 9.10 Server and tried to install Windows Server 2008 in a virtual machine. The Problem is, the Server has got 8 cores, but the virtual machine seems to have problems with that. The VM is very slow and not really usable if i set the VM-config to more than one core. Is it set to only one core everything works fine, but thats not a solution because I bought the Server with several cores for a reason... Does anybody know this problem or has got a solution? I feel like I read the entire internet via Google... no solution found. Greetz Diskilla P.S.: I´m from Germany and it´s kind of hard to ask in english :-) I hope I din´t make that much mistakes.

    I have a late 2008 MacBook and have recently installed Windows 7 via Bootcamp. Under OSX I can get about 4 hours of web browsing and general usage but under 7 that is slashed to about 2 hours. I know it's not a 'Windows being rubbish thing' but is there any settings I can change or updated drivers to improve this? (I'm already using Bootcamp 3.1).

Doing a "dir *.exe" inside the "system32" folder, also doesn't return "shutdown.exe" as one of the results. HOWEVER - if I go through Windows Explorer - there it is! I can see shutdown.exe. Also, if I go to "Start - Run" and type "shutdown /?", it works fine. So, works in the GUI, not on the command line. very strange.   • Win 7 move ssd from SATA 1 to SATA 0, drive letter from G: to C:

    I got a new SSD, plugged it in on my notebook to the available SATA 1 connector and installed Win7 (Ultimate) on it as drive G:. It is working great. Now I would like to move the SSD to the SATA 0 connector and change the drive letter to C:. The existing 500gb HD that has another copy of Win7 (home) on it I will format and connect to the SATA 1 connector as the G: or some other letter drive. Is this possible? Is there software that will go through the registry and "correct" all of the entries for "G:" for everything installed and fix it all up? Or am I better off biting the bullet and setting the hardware where I want it and doing a fresh install of everything? Thanx, G

  • How to stop DW20.exe running on Win 2003 Server

    Periodically my ASP.NET application crashes (usually because memory consumption exceeds maximum allowed by application pool) and DW20.exe starts up. This is a big problem because it uses huge amounts of memory and CPU for minutes at a time. I want to know how to stop DW20.exe from running. Please note, I have already tried these often mentioned solutions: Disabling error reporting in Control Panel System Advanced Error Reporting Disabling the Error Reporting Service Modifying the registry as in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841477 (however I might have done this wrong - this doc says "add a DWReportee value of 1" - what I did was add a DWORD entry with hexadecimal value of 1 - is this right? Also only 2 of the 4 keys were present, so I only modified these, e.g. there was no HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\PCHealth key at all) So, zero points for suggesting any of the above (unless you can see I have modified the registry incorrectly)! Also zero points for suggesting I resolve whatever is causing the application crashes :) - I am figuring this out, I just want something in the mean time to stop DW20.exe eating up all the server resources. By the way, this is a Windows 2003 SP1 server, with IIS 6 and SQL 2005 installed. There is no MS Office.

  • Recommendations for good FTP server for Win 2008 x64

    I spent a bunch of time learning/configuring the "all new and better" FTP feature for IIS7. In my opinion, it still fails hard: In order to have multiple FTP sites on the same machine, you have to use host|user usernames (like domain.com|jason) for every account. Using IIS Manager auth doesn't seem to work at all. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but I can't figure out what the hell it is. I've read all the official articles on it and configured it a hundred different ways. Doesn't play well with passive connection types. That has to be disabled on the client in order for it to work. Doesn't have any way to allow one user to see multiple sites no matter what binding they are connected to. For instance, if "jason" connects to ftp.domain.com, he should be able to see domain2.com, domain3.com without seeing domain4.com and domain5.com. It takes an act of God to set this up with IIS7. So I'm wanting to install a third party FTP server instead. I've looked at FileZilla both ZFTPServer. Anyone know of any pros/cons on these? Any other recommendations?

I can only currently see one hard drive... not sure how to get it to recognize the other, as I thought being a new machine that wouldn't be an issue. It has Windows Server 2008 R2 that I loaded on.
