  • Teacher demands excessive/unjustified use of Design Patterns

    - by SoboLAN
    I study computer science and I have a class called "Programming Techniques". Its purpose is to teach (us) good object oriented design principles. During the semester we have homeworks, programs that we must write to demonstrate what we've learned. The lab assistant demands for each of these homeworks that specific design patterns should be used. For example, the current homework is an application used for processing customer orders. We are demanded to use either "Factory Method" or "Abstract Factory" design patterns for this. It gets even worse: at the end of the semester we must write a program (something more complex) that must use at least one creational pattern, at least one structural pattern and at least one behavioural pattern. Is it normal to demand this ? I mean, forcing us to design our programs in such a way that a specific design pattern makes sense is just beyond what I consider ok. If I'm a car mechanic and have a huge tool box, then I will use a certain tool from that box if and when the situation demands it. Not more, not less. If my design of the application doesn't demand at all the use of "Abstract Factory" (for example), then why should I implement it ? I'm not sure yet if the senior lecturer agrees with what the lab assistant is demanding, but I want to talk to him about it and I need solid arguments to do so. How should I approach this problem with him ? PS: I'm sure there must be a better way to teach us these things. Maybe making us each week read about 3 design patterns and the next week giving us a test with small but specific programming or architectural situations/problems. The goal in that test would be to identify what design patterns would make sense and how they could be implemented. This way, he can see if we understand them. EDIT: These homeworks are not just 100-line programs, they have quite a lot of requirements and are fairly complicated. This is the reason we have about 2 - 3 weeks of deadline for each of them. I agree that practicing this is the best way to learn. But shouldn't smaller programs/applications be used for this ? Something just for demonstrating purposes. Not big programs with lots of requirements/classes/etc.

  • Javascript Implementation Patterns for Server-side MVC Websites

    - by tmo256
    I'm looking for information on common patterns for initializing and executing Javascript page by page in a "traditional" server-side MVC website architecture. A few months ago, my development team began, but abandoned, a major re-architecture of our company's primary web app, including a full front-end redesign. In the process, there was some debate about the architecture of the Javascript in the current version of the site, and whether it fit into a clear, modern design pattern. Now I've returned to the process of overhauling the front end of this and several other MVC websites (Ruby on Rails and MVC.net) to implement a responsive framework (Bootstrap), and in the process will again need to review then revamp and update a lot of Javascript. These web applications are NOT single-page Javascript applications (in fact, we are ripping out a lot of Ajax) or designed to require a Javascript MVC pattern; these apps are basically brochure, catalog and administrative sites that follow a server-side MVC pattern. The vast majority of the Javascript required is behavioral, pre-built plugins (JQuery and Bootstrap, et al) that execute on specific DOM nodes. I'm going to give a very brief (as brief as I can be) run-down of the current architecture only in order to illustrate the scope and type of paradigm I'm talking about. Hopefully, it will help you understand the nature of the patterns I'm looking for, but I'm not looking for commentary on the specifics of this code. What I've done in the past is relatively straight-forward and easy to maintain, but, as mentioned above, some of the other developers don't like the current architecture. Currently, on document ready, I execute whatever global Javascript needs to occur on every page, and then call a page-specific init function to initialize node-specific functionality, retrieving the init method from a JS object. On each page load, something like this will happen: $(document).ready(function(){ $('header').menuAction(); App.pages.executePage('home','show'); //dynamic from framework request object }); And the main App javascript is like App = { usefulGlobalVar: 0, pages: { executePage: function(action, controller) { // if exists, App.pages[action][controller].init() }, home: { show: { init: function() { $('#tabs').tabs(); //et. al }, normalizeName: function() { // dom-specific utility function that // doesn't require a full-blown component/class/module } }, edit: ... }, user_profile: ... } } Any common features and functionality requiring modularization or compotentizing is done as needed with prototyping. For common implementation of plugins, I often extend JQuery, so I can easily initialize a plugin with the same options throughout the site. For example, $('[data-tabs]').myTabs() with this code in a utility javascript file: (function($) { $.fn.myTabs = function() { this.tabs( { //...common options }); }; }) Pointers to articles, books or other discussions would be most welcome. Again, I am looking for a site-wide implementation pattern, NOT a JS MVC framework or general how-tos on creating JS classes or components. Thanks for your help!

  • Is SugarCRM really adequate for custom development (or adequate at all)? [closed]

    - by dukeofgaming
    Have you used SugarCRM for custom development successfully?, if so, have you done it programmatically or through the Module Builder? Were you successful? If not, why? I used SugarCRM for a project about two years ago, I ran into errors from the very installation, having to hack the actual installation file to deploy the software in the server and other erros that I can't recall now. Two years after, I'm picking it up for a project once again. I'm feeling like I should have developed the whole thing from scratch myself. Some examples: I couldn't install it in the server (again). I had to install it locally, then copy the files and database over to the server and manually edit the config file. Constantly getting deployment errors from the module builder. One reason is SugarCRM keeps creating a record in the upgrade_history table for a file that does not exist, I keep deleting such record and it keeps coming back corrupt. I get other deployment errors, but have not figured them out. then I have to rollback all files and database to try again. I deleted a custom module with relationships, the relationships stayed in the other modules and cannot be deleted anymore, PHP warnings all over the place. Quick create for custom modules does not appear, hack needed. Its whole cache directory is a joke, permanent data/files are stored there. The module builder interface disappears required fields. Edit the wrong thing, module builder won't deploy again, then pray Quick Repair and/or Rebuild Relationships do the trick. My impression of SugarCRM now is that, regardless of its pretty exterior and apparent functionality, it is a very low quality piece of software. This even scared me more: http://amplicate.com/hate/sugarcrm; a quote: I wis this info had been available when I tried to implement it 2 years ago... I searched high and low and the only info I found was positive. Yes, it's a piece of crap. The community edition was full of bugs... nothing worked. Essentially I got fired for implementing it. I'm glad though, because now I work for myself, am much happier and make more money... so, I should really thank SugarCRM for sucking so much I guess! I figured that perhaps some of you have had similar experiences, and have either sticked with SugarCRM or moved on to another solution. I'm very interested in knowing what your resolutions were -or your current situations are- to make up my own mind, since the project I'm working on is long term and I'm feeling SugarCRM will be more an obstacle than an aid. After further failed attempts to continue using this software I continued to stumble upon dead-ends when using the module editor, I could only recover from this errors by using version control. We are now moving on to a custom implementation using Symfony; perhaps if we were using it with its out-of-the-box modules we would have sticked with it.

  • File not found on RSACryptoServiceProvider, service account permissions?

    - by Ben Scheirman
    Our web service wraps around a third party library that contains the following code. We are using an Active Directory service account in the IIS 6 app pool (no interactive login abilities). Our service fails with the error “The system cannot find the file specified”. We’ve traced the error to the “RSACryptoServiceProvider provider = new RSACryptoServiceProvider();”. The third party assembly depends on a x509 file based certificate for its encryption process and the Service Account has Read / Write access to the keys folder. Additionally, the service account has Read, Write, Modify rights to “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys”. Code: StringBuilder builder = new StringBuilder(publicKeyData); builder.Replace("-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----", ""); builder.Replace("-----END CERTIFICATE-----", ""); X509Certificate2 certificate = new X509Certificate2( Convert.FromBase64String(builder.ToString())); string xmlString = certificate.PublicKey.Key.ToXmlString(false); RSACryptoServiceProvider provider = new RSACryptoServiceProvider(); //BOOM CspKeyContainerInfo containerInfo = provider.CspKeyContainerInfo; provider.PersistKeyInCsp = false; provider.FromXmlString(xmlString); loadedKeys.Add(key, provider); provider2 = provider; We cracked open FileMon and noticed that there is a FILE NOT FOUND for that AppPool, followed by another SUCCESS for the same exact file. I'm out of my element here, anybody have an idea as to why we're seeing this?

  • Rails Nested Forms Attributes not saving if Fields Added with jQuery

    - by looloobs
    Hi I have a rails form with a nested form. I used Ryan Bates nested form with jquery tutorial and I have it working fine as far as adding the new fields dynamically. But when I go to submit the form it does not save any of the associated attributes. However if the partial builds when the form loads it creates the attribute just fine. I can not figure out what is not being passed in the javascript that is failing to communicate that the form object needs to be saved. Any help would be great. class Itinerary < ActiveRecord::Base accepts_nested_attributes_for :trips end itinerary/new.html <% form_for ([@move, @itinerary]), :html => {:class => "new_trip" } do |f| %> <%= f.error_messages %> <%= f.hidden_field :move_id, :value => @move.id %> <% f.fields_for :trips do |builder| %> <%= render "trip", :f => builder %> <% end %> <%= link_to_add_fields "Add Another Leg to Your Trip", f, :trips %> <p><%= f.submit "Submit" %></p> <% end %> application_helper.rb def link_to_remove_fields(name, f) f.hidden_field(:_destroy) + link_to_function(name, "remove_fields(this)") end def link_to_add_fields(name, f, association) new_object = f.object.class.reflect_on_association(association).klass.new fields = f.fields_for(association, new_object, :child_index => "new_#{association}") do |builder| render(association.to_s.singularize, :f => builder) end link_to_function(name, h("add_fields(this, \"#{association}\", \"#{escape_javascript(fields)}\")")) end application.js function add_fields(link, association, content) { var new_id = new Date().getTime(); var regexp = new RegExp("new_" + association, "g") $(link).parent().before(content.replace(regexp, new_id)); }

    Hi All, I have used jdom for xml validation against schema. The main problem there is that it gives an error FWK005 parse may not be called while parsing The main reason was that multiple of threads working for xerces validation at the same time. SO I got the solution that i have to lock that validation. which is not good So I want to know which xml validator works perfectly for multithreading project public static HashMap validate(String xmlString, Validator validator) { HashMap<String, String> map = new HashMap<String, String>(); long t1 = System.currentTimeMillis(); DocumentBuilder builder = null; try { //obtain lock to proceed // lock.lock(); try { builder = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance().newDocumentBuilder(); // Source source = new DOMSource(builder.parse(new ByteArrayInputStream(xmlString.getBytes()))); validator.validate(new StreamSource(new StringReader(xmlString))); map.put("ISVALID", "TRUE"); logger.info("We have successfuly validated the schema"); } catch (Exception ioe) { ioe.printStackTrace(); logger.error("NOT2 VALID STRING IS :" + xmlString); map.put("MSG", ioe.getMessage()); // logger.error("IOException while validating the input XML", ioe); } logger.info(map); long t2 = System.currentTimeMillis(); logger.info("XML VALIDATION TOOK:::" + (t2 - t1)); } catch (Exception e) { logger.error(e); } finally { //release lock // lock.unlock(); builder = null; } return map; } Thanks Sunil Kumar Sahoo

    - by Shahar Zrihen
    I've got an app that has a UTF8 name (hebrew). I use the platform/android/AndroidManifest.xml file for this. I've managed to narrow it down to the Ti.cloudpush module. only when I enable this module I get the error. I used to be able to compile it to android without any issues but as soon as I enable cloud services I get this error - [ERROR] Exception occured while building Android project: [ERROR] Traceback (most recent call last): [ERROR] File "/Users/Shahar/Library/Application Support/Titanium/mobilesdk/osx/2.1.0.GA/android/builder.py", line 2218, in <module> [ERROR] s.build_and_run(True, None, key, password, alias, output_dir) [ERROR] File "/Users/Shahar/Library/Application Support/Titanium/mobilesdk/osx/2.1.0.GA/android/builder.py", line 1970, in build_and_run [ERROR] self.manifest_changed = self.generate_android_manifest(compiler) [ERROR] File "/Users/Shahar/Library/Application Support/Titanium/mobilesdk/osx/2.1.0.GA/android/builder.py", line 1195, in generate_android_manifest [ERROR] custom_manifest_contents = fill_manifest(custom_manifest_contents) [ERROR] File "/Users/Shahar/Library/Application Support/Titanium/mobilesdk/osx/2.1.0.GA/android/builder.py", line 1122, in fill_manifest [ERROR] manifest_source = manifest_source.replace(ti_permissions,permissions_required_xml) [ERROR] UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xd7 in position 501: ordinal not in range(128) and this is my manifest file with the part that causes the issues. • accepts_nested_attributes_for and nested_form plugin

    - by Denis
    Hi folks, I've the following code in a _form.html.haml partial, it's used for new and edit actions. (fyi I use the Ryan Bates' plugin nested_form) .fields - f.fields_for :transportations do |builder| = builder.collection_select :person_id, @people, :id, :name, {:multiple => true} = builder.link_to_remove 'effacer' = f.link_to_add "ajouter", :transportations works fine for the new action... for the edit action, as explain in the doc, I've to add the :id of already existing associations, so, I've to add something like = builder.hidden_field :id, ?the value? if ?.new_record? How can I get the value? Here is the doc of accepts_nested_attributes_for for reference (source: http://github.com/rails/rails/blob/master/activerecord/lib/active_record/nested_attributes.rb#L332) # Assigns the given attributes to the collection association. # # Hashes with an <tt>:id</tt> value matching an existing associated record # will update that record. Hashes without an <tt>:id</tt> value will build # a new record for the association. Hashes with a matching <tt>:id</tt> # value and a <tt>:_destroy</tt> key set to a truthy value will mark the # matched record for destruction. # # For example: # # assign_nested_attributes_for_collection_association(:people, { # '1' => { :id => '1', :name => 'Peter' }, # '2' => { :name => 'John' }, # '3' => { :id => '2', :_destroy => true } # }) # # Will update the name of the Person with ID 1, build a new associated # person with the name `John', and mark the associatied Person with ID 2 # for destruction. # # Also accepts an Array of attribute hashes: # # assign_nested_attributes_for_collection_association(:people, [ # { :id => '1', :name => 'Peter' }, # { :name => 'John' }, # { :id => '2', :_destroy => true } # ]) Thanks for your help.

  • Crystal Reports Failed Database Login

    - by Marlon
    Hello, After spending a good 3 to 4 hours on google trying to find any solution to my problem I haven't had much luck. Basically, we use crystal reports for our .NET applications with a sql server back end, we have many clients each with their own server and so our reports need to have their connections dynamically set. Up until a week ago this worked fine. However a few days ago a client reported they were getting a database login prompt for a report (only one report, the rest worked fine). We were quite stumped but we managed to reproduce it on a netbook which didn't have visual studio or sql server installed. In the end the dev decided to reproduce the report in the hope it was just an oddity in that particular report. Unfortunately a new client today also experienced the same problem, but this time for every crystal report they had - and also they worked on the netbook, so we are really quite lost here. Below is a screenshot of what our clients get presented with - and here is the code that I use to set the connection information in the report cI.ServerName = (string)builder["Data Source"]; cI.DatabaseName = (string)builder["Initial Catalog"]; cI.UserID = (string)builder["User ID"]; cI.Password = (string)builder["Password"]; foreach (IConnectionInfo info in cryRpt.DataSourceConnections) { info.SetConnection(cI.ServerName, cI.DatabaseName, cI.UserID, cI.Password); } foreach (ReportDocument sub in cryRpt.Subreports) { foreach (IConnectionInfo info in sub.DataSourceConnections) { info.SetConnection(cI.ServerName, cI.DatabaseName, cI.UserID, cI.Password); } } As always, any help much appreciated.

  • Problem with Railscast #197 - Nested Model Form Part 2

    - by sscirrus
    I'm trying to implement Ryan's Railscast #197 in a system with Questions, Answers, and (multiple choice) Options. http://railscasts.com/episodes/197-nested-model-form-part-2. I have successfully implemented the nesting among these forms/partials. The simpler 'check box' way to delete records works properly. The problem occurs when I try to add/delete records. I have copied the code exactly as it appears in his Railscast: #new.html.erb <%= javascript_include_tag :defaults, :cache => true %> <% f.fields_for :in_options do |builder| %> <%= render "option_fields", :f => builder %> <% end %> #_option_fields.html.erb partial <%= f.hidden_field :_destroy %> <%= link_to_function "remove", "remove_fields(this)" %> #application_helper.rb (exact same as #197) def link_to_remove_fields(name, f) f.hidden_field(:_destroy) + link_to_function(name, "remove_fields(this)") end def link_to_add_fields(name, f, association) new_object = f.object.class.reflect_on_association(association).klass.new fields = f.fields_for(association, new_object, :child_index => "new_#{association}") do |builder| render(association.to_s.singularize + "_fields", :f => builder) end link_to_function(name, h("add_fields(this, \"#{association}\", \"#{escape_javascript(fields)}\")")) end #application.js (exact same as #197. I have an Event.addbehavior below this code.) function remove_fields(link) { $(link).previous("input[type=hidden]").value = "1"; $(link).up(".fields").hide(); } function add_fields(link, association, content) { var new_id = new Date().getTime(); var regexp = new RegExp("new_" + association, "g") $(link).up().insert({ before: content.replace(regexp, new_id) }); } 2 problems: When I click on the 'remove' link it doesn't remove - it just shifts the page up or down. When I include link_to_add_fields "Add Answer", f, :answers, I get undefined method `klass' for nil:NilClass. Thanks everyone.

  • Can I use my Ninject .NET project within Orchard CMS?

    - by Mattias Z
    I am creating a website using Orchard CMS and I have an external .NET project written with Ninject for dependency injection which I would like to use together with a module within Orchard CMS. I know that Orchard uses Autofac for dependency injection and this is causing me problems since I never worked with DI before. I have created a Autofac module UserModule which registers the source UserRegistrationSource and I configured Orchard to load the module like this: OrchardStarter.cs .... builder.RegisterModule(new UserModule()); .... UserModule.cs public class UserModule : Module { protected override void Load(ContainerBuilder builder) { builder.RegisterSource(new UserRegistrationSource()); base.Load(builder); } } UserRegistrationSource.cs public class UserRegistrationSource : IRegistrationSource { public bool IsAdapterForIndividualComponents { get { return false; } } public IEnumerable<IComponentRegistration> RegistrationsFor(Service service, Func<Service, IEnumerable<IComponentRegistration>> registrationAccessor) { var serviceWithType = service as IServiceWithType; if (serviceWithType == null) yield break; var serviceType = serviceWithType.ServiceType; if (!serviceType.IsInterface || !typeof(IUserServices).IsAssignableFrom(serviceType) || serviceType == typeof(IUserServices)) yield break; var registrationBuilder = ... yield return registrationBuilder.CreateRegistration(); } } But now I'm stuck... Should I somehow try to resolve the dependencies in UserRegistrationSource by getting the requested types from the Ninject container (kernel) with Autofac or is this the wrong approach? Or should the Ninject kernel do the resolves for Autofac for the external project?

  • How can I synchronise two datatables and update the target in the database?

    - by Craig
    I am trying to synchronise two tables between two databases. I thought that the best way to do this would be to use the DataTable.Merge method. This seems to pick up the changes, but nothing ever gets committed to the database. So far I have: string tableName = "[Table_1]"; string sql = "select * from " + tableName; using (SqlConnection sourceConn = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["source"].ConnectionString)) { SqlDataAdapter sourceAdapter = new SqlDataAdapter(); sourceAdapter.SelectCommand = new SqlCommand(sql, sourceConn); sourceConn.Open(); DataSet sourceDs = new DataSet(); sourceAdapter.Fill(sourceDs); using (SqlConnection targetConn = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["target"].ConnectionString)) { SqlDataAdapter targetAdapter = new SqlDataAdapter(); targetAdapter.SelectCommand = new SqlCommand(sql, targetConn); SqlCommandBuilder builder = new SqlCommandBuilder(targetAdapter); targetAdapter.InsertCommand = builder.GetInsertCommand(); targetAdapter.UpdateCommand = builder.GetUpdateCommand(); targetAdapter.DeleteCommand = builder.GetDeleteCommand(); targetConn.Open(); DataSet targetDs = new DataSet(); targetAdapter.Fill(targetDs); targetDs.Tables[0].TableName = tableName; sourceDs.Tables[0].TableName = tableName; targetDs.Tables[0].Merge(sourceDs.Tables[0]); targetAdapter.Update(targetDs.Tables[0]); } } At the present time, there is one row in the source that is not in the target. This row is never transferred. I have also tried it with an empty target, and nothing is transferred.

  • Identity.Name is disposed in a IIS7 Asp.NET MVC application Thread

    - by vIceBerg
    I have made the smallest demo project to illustrate my problem. You can download the sources Here Visual Studio 2008, .NET 3.5, IIS7, Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bits. The IIS Website is configured ONLY for Windows Authentication in an Integreated pipeline app pool (DefaultAppPool). Here's the problem. I have an Asp.NET MVC 2 application. In an action, I start a thread. The View returns. The thread is doing it's job... but it needs to access Thread.CurrentPrincipal.Identity.Name BANG The worker process of IIS7 stops. I have a window that says: "Visual Studio Just-In-Time Debugger An unhandled exception ('System.Object.DisposedException') occured in w3wp.exe [5524]" I checked with the debugger and the Thread.CurrentPrincipal.Identity is valid, but the Name property is disposed. If I put a long wait in the action before it returns the view, then the Thread can do it's job and the Identity.Name is not disposed. So I think the Name gets disposed when the view is returned. For the sake of the discussion, here's the code that the thread runs (but you can also download the demo project. The link is on top of this post): private void Run() { const int SECTOWAIT = 3; //wait SECTOWAIT seconds long end = DateTime.Now.Ticks + (TimeSpan.TicksPerSecond * SECTOWAIT); while (DateTime.Now.Ticks <= end) continue; //Check the currentprincipal. BANG!!!!!!!!!!!!! var userName = Thread.CurrentPrincipal.Identity.Name; } Here's the code that starts the thread public void Start() { Thread thread = new Thread(new ParameterizedThreadStart(ThreadProc)); thread.SetApartmentState(ApartmentState.MTA); thread.Name = "TestThread"; thread.Start(this); } static void ThreadProc(object o) { try { Builder builder = (Builder)o; builder.Run(); } catch (Exception ex) { throw; } } So... what am i doing wrong? Thanks

I used the Debugger and it does executes these statements, but the dialog doesn't show. }

  • How to hide subfolder when using Web.config for subdomains?

    - by mc-kay
    I have FTP access to my ASP.NET Websapce (IIS 7) and I route subdomains with a Web.config in the web root folder. She looks like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <configuration> <system.webServer> <rewrite> <rules> <rule name="route www and emtpy requests" stopProcessing="true"> <match url=".*" /> <conditions logicalGrouping="MatchAll" trackAllCaptures="false"> <add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^(www.)?example.com" /> <add input="{PATH_INFO}" pattern="^/www/" negate="true" /> </conditions> <action type="Rewrite" url="\www\{R:0}" /> </rule> <rule name="route to blog" stopProcessing="true"> <match url=".*" /> <conditions logicalGrouping="MatchAll" trackAllCaptures="false"> <add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^blog.example.com$" /> <add input="{PATH_INFO}" pattern="^/blog/" negate="true" /> </conditions> <action type="Rewrite" url="\blog\{R:0}" /> </rule> </rules> </rewrite> </system.webServer> </configuration> As you can see i have two folders in my root directory: "www" and "blog". When i now enter "blog.example.com" everythink is working fine, but when i click a link i will go to "blog.example.com/blog" What can I do to prevent this behavior ?

  • At the Java DEMOgrounds - JavaFX

    - by Janice J. Heiss
    JavaFX has made rapid progress in the last year, as is evidenced by the wealth of demos on display. A few questions appear to be prominent in the minds of JavaFX enthusiasts. Here are some questions with answers provided by Oracle’s JavaFX team.When will the rest of the JavaFX code be available in open source?Oracle has started to open source JavaFX. The existing platform code will finish being committed to OpenJFX by the end of the year.Why should I use JavaFX instead of HTML5?We see JavaFX as complementary to HTML5, and most companies we talk to react positively once they understand how they can benefit from a hybrid solution. As most HTML5 developers will tell you, the biggest obstacle to deploying HTML5 applications is fragmentation. JavaFX offers a convenient way to render HTML and JavaScript within its WebView component, which provides the same level of quality and features across Windows, Mac, and Linux. Additionally, JavaScript in WebView can make calls into the Java code, and vice versa, allowing developers to tap into the best of both worlds.What is the market penetration of JavaFX? It is currently limited, as we've just made available JavaFX on Mac and Linux in August, but we expect JavaFX to be present on millions of desktop-type systems now that JavaFX is included as part of the JRE. We have also significantly lowered the level of effort required to deploy an application bundling the JRE and JavaFX runtime libraries. Finally, we are seeing a lot of interest by companies operating in the embedded market, who have found it hard to develop compelling UIs with existing technologies.Below are summaries of JavaFX Demos on display at JavaOne 2012:JavaFX EnsembleEnsemble is a collection of over 100 JavaFX samples packaged as a JavaFX application. This demo is especially useful to those new to JavaFX, or those not familiar with its latest features (e.g. canvas, color picker). Ensemble is the reference for getting familiar with JavaFX functionality. Each sample can be run from within Ensemble, and the API for each sample, as well as the source code are available alongside the sample.The samples source code can be saved as a NetBeans project for convenience purposes, or can be copied as is in any other Java IDE. The version of Ensemble shown is packaged as a native Windows application, including the JRE and JavaFX libraries. It was created with the JavaFX packager, which provides multiple packaging options, and frees developers from the cumbersome and error-prone process of packaging a Java application.FX Experience ToolsFX Experience Tools is a JavaFX application that provides different utilities to create new skins for your JavaFX applications. One of the most powerful features of JavaFX is the ability to skin applications via CSS. Since not all Java developers are familiar with CSS, these utilities are a great starting point to create custom skins. JavaFX allows developers to easily customize the look and feel of their applications through CSS. FX Experience Tools makes it easy to create new themes for JavaFX applications, even if you are not familiar with CSS. FX Experience Tools is a JavaFX application packaged as a native application including the JRE and JavaFX runtime libraries. FX Experience tools shows how this type of deployment simplifies the packaging of Java applications without requiring developers to master the intricacies of Java application packaging. The download site for FX Experience Tools is http://fxexperience.com/2012/03/announcing-fx-experience-tools/ JavaFX Scene BuilderJavaFX Scene Builder is a visual layout tool that lets users quickly design the UI of your JavaFX application, without coding. Users can drag and drop UI components, modify their properties, apply style sheets, and the FXML code they create for the layout is automatically generated in the background. The result is an FXML file that can then be combined with a Java project by binding the UI to the application’s logic. Developers can easily create user interfaces for their application, as well as separate the application’s UI from the application logic for easier maintenance. Attendees can get this app by going to javafx.com and checking the link at top of the “Overview” page.Scene Builder allows developers to easily layout JavaFX UI controls, charts, shapes, and containers, so that you can quickly prototype user interfaces. It generates FXML, an XML-based markup language that enables users to define an application’s user interface, separately from the application logic. Scene Builder can be used in combination with any Java IDE, but is more tightly integrated with NetBeans IDE. It is written as a JavaFX application, with native desktop integration on Windows and Mac OS X. It’s a perfect example of a JavaFX application packages as a native application.Scene Builder is available for your preferred development platform. Besides the GA release on Windows and Mac, a Developer Preview of Scene Builder for Linux has just been made available.Scenic ViewScenic View is a tool that can be used to understand the current state of your application UI, and to also easily manipulate properties of the scenegraph without having to keep editing your code. Creating UIs is a complex process, and it can be hard and tedious detecting these issues, editing the code, and then compiling it to test the app again. Scenic View is a great diagnostics tool that helps developers identify these issues and correct them at runtime.Attendees can get Scenic View by going to javafx.com, selecting the “Community” tab, and clicking the link under the “Third Party Tools and Utilities” section.Scenic View allows developers to easily examine the state of a JavaFX application scenegraph while the application is running. Some of the latest features added to Scenic View include event monitoring, javadoc browsing, and contextual menus. The download site for Scenic View is available here: http://fxexperience.com/scenic-view/ Conference TourConference Tour is an application that lets users discover some of the major Java conferences throughout the world. The Conference Tour application shows how simple it is to mix JavaFX and HTML5 into a single, interactive application. Attendees get Conference Tour here.JavaFX includes a Web engine based on Webkit that provides a consistent web interface to render HTML5 across operating systems, within a JavaFX application. JavaFX features a bi-directional bridge that allows Java APIs to call JavaScript within WebView, or allows JavaScript to make calls to Java APIs. This allows developers to leverage the best of both worlds.Java EE developers can take advantage of WebView and the JavaScript-Java bridge to allow their HTML clients to seamlessly bypass Web browser’s sandbox to access native system resources, providing a richer user experience.FXMediaPlayerFXMediaPlayer is an application that lets developers check different media functionality in JavaFX, such as synthesizer or support for HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). This demo shows how developers can embed video content in their Java applications. JavaFX leverages the underlying video (e.g., H.264) and audio (e.g., AAC) codecs on the user’s computer. JavaFX APIs allow developers to interact with the video content (e.g. play/pause, or programmable markers). Some of the latest media features introduced in JavaFX 2.2 include HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). Obviously there is a lot for JavaFX enthusiasts to chew on!
