  • Can't seem to install imagick

    I'm trying to install the PHP PEAR PECL extension "imagick" (image magick), but failing horribly. It seems that I keed installing packages to progress, but this one has me stumped.   • Prevent Explorer From Expanding Network Folders when in Folders View

    When you are browsing a network share and there are over 1000 folders in the root (like at work), is there a way to prevent Explorer from expanding all the Folders when you have the "Folders" view enabled? Explorer will open the folder your double clicked on, and show that in the right navigation pane, and it's great, but wait about five seconds and the rest of the folder list pops into view, I'd rather that not happen. There is only one folder I'm interested in (or have access to), and it's annoying waiting for Explorer to load the rest of the files.

  • Why can't I play DVDs on Windows 8 Pro with Media Center Pack?

    I have a laptop with Windows 8 Pro with Media Center (64 bit), but neither Media Player or Media Center can play DVDs. Have I done something wrong? Did the Feature Pack not install correctly? Should this work? Can I somehow uninstall and reinstall the Media Pack? Details So I upgraded by Windows 7 Home Premium laptop to Windows 8 Pro based on Microsoft's low pricing. I also grabbed my free upgrade to Media Pack and followed the instructions on that page to add my feature pack. Alas! I still cannot play DVDs via either Media Center or Player. Various Context Thinking I might need to re-install the pack, I found that I could no longer add any more feature packs (searching for add features settings only shows Turn Windows Features On and Off). Media Centre and Media Player are both enabled in Windows Features. I cannot see any way to remove or downgrade from the Media Pack, nor to add any more feature packs. I installed a codec pack (32bit) from Shark007, which has not allowed me to play DVDs (although did allow me to play various other media files). Media Player can play DTV recorded on another Windows 7 box, but Media Center cannot. VLC plays DVDs OK, but I'd prefer to figure out what the root cause of this problem is. There were no errors or other indications that the Media Pack failed to install; the installation itself was quite smooth. Although I have not checked my event log in detail. Before upgrading to Windows 7, I could play DVDs OK. Screenshots System Information, showing I have Windows 8 Pro with Media Center When playing a DVD, Media Player gives and error: The selected file has an extension that is not recognised by windows... When you click Yes, it fails saying: Windows Media Player cannot find the file... Media Center says: The file type is not recognisd and cannot be played, along with some codec related stuff. I can browse the files OK via My Computer on any video DVD.

Example: C:\Program Files (x86)\Notepad++\uninstall.exe In general, I read that it's better to uninstall a program via window's Control Panel. But for the programs that have their own uninstall.exe, is there any real difference between the un-installations? Is the Control Panel's cleaner in removing dependencies?

  • Robocopy unilog output is gibberish

    I tried to get robocopy in Windows 7 to generate a Unicode log, since I have files with Unicode characters. The command I used: robocopy C:\mysource D:\mydest /mir /unilog:backup.log /tee File the copy works and the onscreen output is correct, the log file itself just contains gibberish. This is regardless of whether I use the Command Prompt or the Powershell. What gives? Am I doing something wrong?

  • Reality behind wireless security - the weakness of encrypting

    I welcome better key-wording here, both on tags and title, and I'll add more links as soon as possible. For some years I'm trying to conceive a wireless environment that I'd setup anywhere and advise for everyone, including from big enterprises to small home networks of 1 machine. I've always had the feeling using any kind of the so called "wireless security" methods is actually a bad design. I'm talking mostly about encrypting and pass-phrasing (which are actually two different concepts), since I won't even considering hiding SSID and mac filtering. I understand it's a natural way of thinking. With cable networking nobody can access the network unless they have access to the physical cable, so you're "secure" in the physical way. In a way, encrypting is for wireless what walling (building walls) is for the cables. And giving pass-phrases is adding a door with a key. But the cabling without encryption is also insecure. Someone just need to plugin and get your data! And while I can see the use for encrypting data, I don't think it's a security measure in wireless networks. As I said elsewhere, I believe we should encrypt only sensitive data regardless of wires. And passwords should be added to the users, always, not to wifi. For securing files, truly, best solution is backup. Sure all that doesn't happen that often, but I won't consider the most situations where people just don't care. I think there are enough situations where people actually care on using passwords on their OS users, so let's go with that in mind. For being able to break the walls or the door someone will need proper equipment such as a hammer or a master key of some kind. Same is true for breaking the wireless walls in the analogy. But, I'd say true data security is at another place. I keep promoting the Fonera concept as an instance. It opens up a free wifi port, if you choose so, and anyone can connect to the internet through that, without having any access to your LAN. It also uses a QoS which will never let your bandwidth drop from that public usage. That's security, and it's open. And who doesn't want to be able to use internet freely anywhere you can find wifi spots? I have 3G myself, but that's beyond the point here. If I have a wifi at home I want to let people freely use it for internet as to not be an hypocrite and even guests can easily access my files, just for reading access, so I don't need to keep setting up encryption and pass-phrases that are not whole compatible. I'll probably be bashed for promoting the non-usage of WPA 2 with AES or whatever, but I wanted to know from more experienced (super) users out there: what do you think? Is there really a need for encryption to have true wireless security?

  • Linux boot on a raid1 software raid ?

    Hello I am trying to convert my single disk boot to a raid1 boot So far here is what i have: I sucessfully create the raid 1 as degraded with the new drive alone, I copied all the data on it I can mount that raid 1, see its files etc I already have a raid5 that is working on the same box (although not booting on it) I have installed grub on both drive When grub boot, it loads the kernel alright, but during the kernel boot it fails to load the "root block device" The kernel tells me : 1 - detected that root device is an md device 2 - determining root devices 3 - mounting root 4 - mounting /dev/md125 on /newroot failed: input/output error. Please enter another root device: ... At this point, if I enter /dev/sda3 (my "old" root device that isn't converted to raid yet) everything boots fine without the root. The /dev/md125 device is indeed created but it seems to be created after the error happens, as in it creates it after loading the device, when mdadm is loaded. Somehow it looks like it can't/doesn't load the raid array before it needs to mount it, and I don't know how I can solve that.     I'm trying to set up root certification authority, subordinate certification authority and to generate the client certificates signed by any of this CA that nginx 0.7.67 on Debian Squeeze will accept. My problem is that root CA signed client certificate works fine while subordinate CA signed one results in "400 Bad Request. The SSL certificate error".     With default settings, when 'putting' the file, it is clobbered without complaint or warning. When 'getting' lftp complains: get: super.sh: file already exists and xfer:clobber is unset I change my /etc/lftp.conf and append: set xfer:make-backup yes set xfer:clobber yes When putting and getting, the files get clobbered, however no backup is made. I've checked the settings with "set -a | grep clob" and "set -a | grep backup" and the values are correct.

Unfortunately I uninstalled VMWare Fusion, and my Mac still has applications in VMWare Fusion associated with it. How can I remove the associations?   • How to switch between the upper and lower pane in emacs?

    I am using the erlang mode in Aquamacs. The mode, by default, creates a new pane and buffer "*erlang*" when I hit C-C C-K to compile an erlang file. (as seen in the attached screen shot) What is the easiest way to switch between these two panes? I do not think "C-x b" is applicable in this case because 'C-X b' then "*erlang" is slow considering I have to switch between my files and the erlang shell rather frequently.

    I have a floppy made on a Mac years ago. I'd like to pull some files from it, but Macs haven't had floppies in forever, so I don't have one. I tried an app called MacOpener, but it didn't seem to work, plus it was pretty old. I even tried sharing the PC's A:\ drive and accessing it remotely from a Mac, but that didn't work either. Any ideas?

  • Bugmenot (registration bypasser) alternative that doesn't suck?

    I used to love Bugmenot...but then they started blocking more and more sites. Now I'd say a good 75% of the time I try to find logins on bugmenot, the site is blocked. Is there a service like bugmenot that doesn't block sites? EDIT: For example, all of these sites require registration to download files, and all of them are blocked from BugMeNot. To be clear, this problem is because BugMeNot stops users from adding logins for them, not because of the individual sites themselves: dcemu.co.uk, ubuntuforums.org, club.cdfreaks.com
