I spent way too many hours on this one. I was going through full configuration of ADFS v2 with WCF active client scenarios and using self generated certificates, had all things lined up perfectly. How should I implement Transaction database EJB 3.0

In the CustomerTransactions entity, I have the following field to record what the customer bought: @ManyToMany private List<Item> listOfItemsBought; When I think more about this field, there's a chance it may not work because merchants are allowed to change item's information (e.g. price, discount, etc...). Hence, this field will not be able to record what the customer actually bought when the transaction occurred. At the moment, I can only think of 2 ways to make it work. I will record the transaction details into a String field. I feel that this way would be messy if I need to extract some information about the transaction later on. Whenever the merchant changes an item's information, I will not update directly to that item's fields. Instead, I will create another new item with all the new information and keep the old item untouched. I feel that this way is better because I can easily extract information about the transaction later on. However, the bad side is that my Item table may contain a lot of rows. I'd be very grateful if someone could give me an advice on how I should tackle this problem. SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB – How to get started

As many of you aware, SQL Server can be a bit of a pig when it comes to system resources on your development machine. As part of the 2012 products Microsoft has added SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB which is a happy medium for myself when thinking about having to install a full blown SQL Server on my box. This however does not work in all cases for all development but if you are doing web or local client development then it should suffice. On the other hand, if you are working with technologies like SharePoint or trying to run Team Foundation Server on your local box then you will be out of luck while using LocalDB. To start of with, the localDB setup is delivered and packaged with Visual Studio 2012 RC. If you want to get the stand-alone installer you can download it here in either the 32 or 64 bit flavors. Once you get it installed you can start using it right away in either Visual Studio 2010 or the new Visual Studio 2012 RC. To get started you can open the SQL Server object explorer in Visual Studio by clicking the menu option View –> SQL Server Object Explorer. This will bring up to the navigation pane where you can add a SQL Server. Once you add the SQL Server you will be prompted with the “Connect to Server” dialog to enter the server for which you can use “(localdb)\v11.0”. Click connect and you should be connected to your localDB where you can create and manage databases from Visual Studio 2010, Visual Studio 2012 or SSMS. Once you have started creating databases here you can use the database projects in Visual Studio with these database as well as use the (localdb)\v11.0 server name inside your connections string information for your development environment. Hope this helps someone get started with SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB! It provides a great balance for developing against SQL Server 2012.

Live search/filter as you type in client approach

As an exercise for myself to practice my JavaScript "skills" I'm trying to write a client-side filter. It should be able to filter "content blocks" as the user types. By "content block", I mean a list of DomElements that each contain at least one text node - it is possible that they contain more, and even a different amount of text nodes, nested inside other nodes, etc. I've thought of 2 approaches: On page initialization, scan all nodes and store all the text in some kind of Map or a tree. Simply iterate over every item and check whether it has the string to search/filter for. One could add performance here by caching, only filtering the current remaining items if text is added, etc. Obviously, if the number of nodes is really big, option 1 will take a while to build the 'index' but it will perform faster once it is built. Option 2 however will be available right on page load since no initialization is performed. But of course it will take longer to search. So my question is: what is the best approach here? And how would one implement 'caching' and/or 'index'?

Interfaces: profit of using

First of all, my ubiquitous language is PHP, and I'm thinking about learning Java. So let me split my question on two closely related parts. Here goes the first part. Say I have a domain-model class. It has some getters, setters, some query methods etc. And one day I want to have a possibility to compare them. So it looks like: class MyEntity extends AbstractEntity { public function getId() { // get id property } public function setId($id) { // set id property } // plenty of other methods that set or retrieve data public function compareTo(MyEntity $anotherEntity) { // some compare logic } } If it would have been Java, I should have implemented a Comparable interface. But why? Polymorphism? Readbility? Or something else? And if it was PHP -- should I create Comparable interface for myself? So here goes the second part. My colleague told me that it is a rule of thumb in Java to create an interface for every behavioral aspect of the class. For example, if I wanted to present this object as a string, I should state this behaviour by something like implements Stringable, where in case of PHP Stringable would look like: interface Stringable { public function __toString(); } Is that really a rule of thumb? What benefits are gained with this approach? And does it worth it in PHP? And in Java?

Unable to debug javascript?

I’m having some problems debugging an encoded javacscript. This script I’m referring to given in this link over here. The encoding here is simple and it works by shifting the unicodes values to whatever Codekey was use during encoding. Like for example when the value of i=0 what values would the following attributes / method would hold s1.charCodeAt(i) and s.substr(s.length-1,1) The reason I’m doing this is to understand as to how a CodeKey function really works. I don’t see anything in the code above which tells it to decode on the basis of codekey value. The only thing I can point in the encoding text is the last character which is set to 1 , 2 ,3 or 4 depending upon the codekey selected during encoding process. One can verify using the link I have given above. However, to debug, I’m using firebug addon with the script running as localhost on my wamp server. I’m able to put a breakpoint on the js using firebug but I’m unable to retrieve any of the user defined parameters or functions I mentioned above. I want to know under this context what would be best way to debug this encoded js.

Precise exposition of an image for set number of frames (Vsync?)

I need to make a simple enough program in C#, but it seems to be impossible via usual WinForms means. I need to show something (a string of text, an image) on the screen for very small time interval. Since typical monitors are 60Hz, this interval would be 1 or 2 frames (16,6 or 33,3 ms). I tried doing this with usual WinForms, and it is not possible because, apparently, there is no way to know how many frames were output to the monitor since some point in time. I can only draw on the controls, and monitor output is totally independant. So even if I run the timer, say, for 17 ms, between showing and hiding the image, it still sometimes manages not to draw a single frame of my image on the screen (even though theoretically it should, because 17ms 16,6ms). Moreover, even 20ms seems to slow (even though i should be more than enough). I did some game development as a hobby in the past (Delphi X, XNA) and I know that you usually draw the whole screen by yourself, each frame. Also, I know that there is an option called Vsync in most modern games, that allows you to synchronize your framerate to your monitor's frame rate. So, is it possible? I mean, to actually know how many frames were sent to the monitor with w/e I want to show?

I have some code that's taking over 3 seconds to complete. I'm just wondering if there's a faster way to do this. I have a string with anywhere from 10 to 70 rows of data. Strange WPF ListBox Behavior

I’m trying to bind a List of items to a listbox in WPF. The items are grouped by one value and each group is to be housed in an expander. Everything works fine when I don’t use any custom styles. However, when I use custom styles (which work properly with non-grouped items and as independent controls) the binding doesn’t display any items. Below is the code I’m executing. Any ideas why the items won’t show up in the Expander? Problems with inheritance query view and one to many association in entity framework 4

Hi, I have situation in with I stucked and don't know way out. The problem is in my bigger model, but I have made small example which shows the same problem. I have 4 tables. I called them SuperParent, NamedParent, TypedParent and ParentType. NamedParent and TypedParent derives from superParent. TypedParent has one to many association with ParentType. I describe mapping for entities using queryView. The problem is then I want to get TypedParents and Include ParentType I get the following exception: An error occurred while preparing the command definition. Using custom DataContractResolver in WCF, to transport inheritance trees involving generics

I've got a WCF service, in which there are operations which accept a non-generic base class as parameter. [DataContract] class Foo { ... } This base class is in turn inherited, by such generics classes as [DataContract] class Bar : Foo { ... } To get this to work, I'd previously have to register KnownTypes for the Foo class, and have these include all possible variations of Bar (such as Bar, Bar and even Bar). With the DataContractResolver in .NET 4, however, I should be able to build a resolver which properly stores (and restores) the classes. My questions: Are DataContractResolvers typically only used on the service side, and not by the client? If so, how would that be useful in this scenario? Am I wrong to write a DataContractResolver which serializes the fully qualified type name of a generic type, such as Bar1[List1[string, mscorlib], mscorlib] ? Couldn't the same DataContractResolver on the client side restore these types?

Android Webview Anchor Link (Jump link) not working

Hi, I have a WebView in my Android App that is loading an HTML string using the loadDataWithBaseURL() method. The problem is that local anchor links (<a href="#link">...) are not working correctly. When the link is clicked, it becomes highlighted, but does not scroll to the corresponding anchor. This also does not work if I use the WebView's loadUrl() method to load a page that contains anchor links. However, if I load the same URL in the browser, the anchor links do work. Is there any special handling required to get these to work for a WebView? I am using API v4 (1.6).

VBA WinHTTPRequest and submitting forms

Hi. I spent all day yesterday trying to figure out how to submit a form using WinHTTPRequest. I can do it pretty easily with an InternetExplorer object, but the problem is that I need to save a PDF file that gets returned, and I am not sure how to do this with the IE object. Non breaking space in XAML vs. code

This works fine, and correctly inserts non-breaking spaces into the string: <TextBlock Text="Non Breaking Text Here"></TextBlock> But what I really need is to replace spaces with non-breaking spaces during data binding. So I wrote a simple value converter that replaces spaces with " ". It does indeed replace spaces with " " but " " is displayed literally instead of showing as a non-breaking space. This is my converter: public class SpaceToNbspConverter : IValueConverter { #region IValueConverter Members public object Convert(object value, Type targetType, object parameter, CultureInfo culture) { return value.ToString().Replace(" ", " "); } public object ConvertBack(object value, Type targetType, object parameter, CultureInfo culture) { throw new NotImplementedException(); } #endregion } Does anybody know why it works in XAML, but not in code? /Henrik

Problem with Entity Framework : "The underlying provider failed on Open"

Hi, When I try to insert a record, I get this error : The underlying provider failed on Open. This error occurs only with IIS and not with VWD 2008's webserver. In the EventViewer I get this Application Error : Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed. [CLIENT: ] <add name="ASPNETDBEntities" connectionString="metadata=res://*/Models.FriendList.csdl|res://*/Models.FriendList.ssdl|res://*/Models.FriendList.msl;provider=System.Data.SqlClient;provider connection string="Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\ASPNETDB.MDF;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True;MultipleActiveResultSets=True"" providerName="System.Data.EntityClient" /> I am using aspnetdb.mdf file, and not any external database. I have searched enough for this, but no use. Everything works fine with VWD webserver

WPF WebBrowser NavigateToString vs NavigateToStream (hebrew/non-utf8 encodings)

When I use WPF WebBrowser's NavigateToString method to display UTF8 html (with hebrew text in it) it's displayed perfectly. However, when I try to use the NavigateToString to display html with hebrew text in it in a non-utf8 encoding (CodePage 1255 to be exact) the hebrew is messed up. I checked the cp1255 string in Visual Studio's debugger and it looks great, and also when I save the source of the web browser's contents and open it with an external browser it looks great. If I use the NavigateToStream method instead of the NavigateToString method it works great. What's the problem with the NavigateToString? am I doing something wrong?
