• int i vs int index etc. Which one is better?

  Coming from a C background I've always used int i for generic loop variables. Of course in big nested loops or other complex things I may use a descriptive name but which one had you rather see? int i; for(i=0;i<Controls.Count;i++){ DoStuff(Controls[i]); } or int index; for(index=0;index<Controls.Count;index++){ DoStuff(Controls[index]); } In the current project I am working on there are both of these styles and index being replaced by ndx. Which one is better? Is the i variable too generic? Also what about the other C style names? i, j, k Should all of these be replaced by actual descriptive variables?

• Silverlight "Out of browser application" vs. "Install from page"

  I’ve been working on integrating some controls which call in to COM classes in to a Silverlight client. Since my controls use COM, they only work out of browser. The client does have out of browser installation options turned on, and when I launch the client from visual studio, I can right click it, and install it to the desktop. That all seems to be working fine. The strange part though is that my controls don’t work when they’re out of browser – I get an error that the COM server can’t be started. The stranger part is that if I go in to the clientproperties, and set the Start Action from “Dynamically generate a test page” to “Out of browser application”, my controls work fine, and I get no COM errors. So I guess I don’t understand the difference between installing the application to the desktop through the right click menu and setting the application to start as an out of browser application. Any idea what's going on here?

• [Win32/MFC] Making group-boxes contain things

  As I understand it, a group-box is just another control. Controls inside it are not owned by it, so unlike in Winforms, if you move a group-box the contained controls stay put. What would be the nicest way to address this? Just create your own data-structure mapping controls to 'container' group-boxes so that when the container is moved the children are automatically moved?

• InvalidCastException: System.Web.UI.PartialCachingControl -> MyCustomControl when OutputCaching

  The problem: I am unable to use OutputCaching with my controls which derives from MyCustomControl. Controls are loaded dynamically using definitions from database with Page.LoadControl method. When I add to ascx <%@ OutputCache VaryByParam="*" Duration="3600"% the "InvalidCastException: System.Web.UI.PartialCachingControl - MyCustomControl" exception is thrown. I am unable to modify assembly witch contains dynamic loading controls logic. Is there any way to fix it in derived controls? The second question is about iis7 and native output caching - is it resolves this problem? (I tried to set up several performance counters and I saw that cache wasn't hit...)

  I need to install php-mcrypt on my CentOS 5.5 VPS, When I try yum install php-mcrypt, it says that it is set to be updated which implies that it is already installed. I looked in the /usr/lib/php/modules and cant find the .so file. Anyway I want to update it but yum is giving the following error, I am running PHP-FPM on Nginx. • Setting Up Apache as a Forward Proxy with Cahcing

  I am trying to set up Apache as a forward proxy with caching, but it does not seem to be working correctly. Getting Apache working as a forward proxy was no problem, but no matter what I do it is not caching anything, to disk or memory. I already checked to make sure nothing is conflicting in the mods_enabled directory with mod_cache (ended up commenting it all out) and also I tried moving all of the caching related fields to the configuration file for mod_cache. In addition I set up logging for caching requests, but nothing is being written to those logs. • File not updating in symlink'd folder in IIS

  I have the following setup: Site1/Shared/ - Physical folder Site2/Shared/ - symlink using mklink to Site1/Shared I've updated a javascript file in Site1/Shared/scripts, and the change is being reflected on Site1. However, the change is not being reflected through IIS on Site2. When I open Site1/Shared/scripts/common.js and Site2/Shared/scripts/common.js, they match exactly. But when I view the files through Safari, Firefox, Chrome, IE, from any machine (even machines that have never visited the sites), the change is not reflected on Site2. Here are URLs to the files to review: Site 1: http://www.landsofamerica.com/shared/scripts/common.js Site 2: http://www.landsoftexas.com/shared/scripts/common.js These files look exactly the same when logged onto the server, and the shared folder under landsoftexas.com is a symlink created using mklink to the shared folder under landsofamerica.com. Any idea what might be causing IIS to serve the wrong file?

Suppose there is an aspx page under the folder called SAM, we'd normally issue an http request as follows: http://testing.apps/sam/default.aspx We believe that testing.apps virtual name points to \\devsrvr\websites\testing folder. Suppose there is a css file called menu.css inside common/include. We'd simply have to make the following http call to get it: http://testing.apps/common/include/menu3.css This works!!! I don't understand how? There is no such folder called common inside of testing...

• Samba smbtree No output; failed to retrieve share list

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.10 on two machines, one laptop & one desktop. Faced the same problem when I used 12.04. When I try connecting to the other machine using 'Connect to Server', I give the correct user & workgroup details, but the system displays 'failed to retrieve server list' I've tried editing /etc/samba/smb.conf file to: name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast I also added the other machine to /etc/hosts But, nothing worked. The output of smbtree is naveen@tomkat:~$ smbtree Enter naveen's password: naveen@tomkat:~$ Used sources to solve problem myself: "Failed to retrieve share list from server" error when browsing a share with Nautilus http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1114038 All help will be appreciated. UPDATE: After 'purging' samba and all its components (incl all config files), and reinstall, sharing workes in one direction (from Laptop to Desktop) but when I attempt to use the Desktop as server, same problem is still faced.   I've been having a problem with the package manager. I seemed to have installed gforge, partially, but it keeps giving me errors whenever I install something. (Note that the thing I'm trying to install actually does get installed, but there is always an error returned). Here it is: Creating /etc/gforge/httpd.conf Creating /etc/gforge/httpd.secrets Creating /etc/gforge/local.inc Creating other includes invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 not found. dpkg: error processing gforge-db-postgresql (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 100 Errors were encountered while processing: gforge-db-postgresql E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) When I try to remove it with: sudo apt-get purge gforge-common I get this: Reading package lists...
