• Can an out-of-process COM object determine its parent process?

  From an out-of-process COM object (LocalServer32) can I determine the client process that requested the creation of the object? - to be specific I need to get hold of the client processes command line. This question arrises because (due to poor standardisation, implementation and support) the potential 3rd party clients of the object have a variety of idiosyncracies which the object needs to workaround. To do this the object needs to be able to identify its current client. Extending the interface of the COM object so that the client can identify itself is unfortunately not possible ... or to be more precise the interface can be extended but I won't be able to get the clients to call the extension.

• Escape doube and single backslashes in a string in Ruby

  Hello. I'm trying to access a network path in my ruby script on a windows platform in a format like this. \\servername\some windows share\folder 1\folder2\ Now If I try to use this as a path, it won't work. Single backslashes are not properly escaped for this script. path = "\\servername\some windows share\folder 1\folder2\" d = Dir.new(path) I tried everything I could think of to properly escape slashes in the path. However I can't escape that single backslash - because of it's special meaning. I tried single quotes, double quotes, escaping backslash itself, using alternate quotes such as %Q{} or %q{}, using ascii to char conversion. Nothing works in a sense that I'm not doing it right. :-) Right now the temp solution is to Map a network drive N:\ pointing to that path and access it that way, but that not a solution. Does anyone have any idea how to properly escape single backslashes? Thank you

• How do I display a field's hidden characters in the result of a query in Oracle?

  I have two rows that have a varchar column that are different according to a Java .equals(). I can't easily change or debug the Java code that's running against this particular database but I do have access to do queries directly against the database using SQLDeveloper. The fields look the same to me (they are street addresses with two lines separated by some new line or carriage feed/new line combo). Is there a way to see all of the hidden characters as the result of a query?I'd like to avoid having to use the ascii() function with substr() on each of the rows to figure out which hidden character is different. I'd also accept some query that shows me which character is the first difference between the two fields.

• In WPF using a ListView is there an elegant way to auto resize items?

  I recently wrote, my first, WPF application that has a list of items that are polled from a web-serivce. The items are displayed/data-bound in a ListView via a GridView. A background thread periodically polls the web-serivce and updates the list. If, say, I had three items initially bound to the ListView that simply display a description and the three descriptions where something like: - ProjectA - ProjectB - ProjectC Later a new item is added with a description of 'AReallyReallyLongProjectName', I would end up with a list like: - ProjectA - ProjectB - ProjectC - AReallyR The GridViewColumn would not update it's width and would subsequently cut off any new items that extended the original width. I added this bit of code which forces the column to resize, but it just seems a little hacky. (Just seems weird to set a width just to set it back to nothing to force the resize) if(gridView != null) { foreach(var column in gridView.Columns) { if (double.IsNaN(column.Width) column.Width = column.ActualWidth; column.Width = double.NaN; } } Is there a better, more elegant solution, to accomplish this same thing?

  I am not really a fan of code golf, but I have to wonder, is there an esoteric language designed for it? I mean a language with following properties: Common programs may be expressed in very short amount of characters It uses ASCII character set effectively (for example, common operators are not identifiers, so they don't have to be separated by whitespace, character usage is distributed more or less evenly because we cannot use Huffman coding and so on) Except the terse syntax, it should have very expressible and clean semantics (like, let's say, Python or Scheme); it shouldn't be difficult to program in It doesn't need features for large scale programs, such as OOP, but it definitely should allow custom functions and data structures It should have a large standard library, identifiers in this library should be as short as possible Maybe it should be called CG? Languages that can be a source of inspiration are Forth, APL and Joy.

I'm interested in any successful models employing these two languages in your production polyglot programs and also the areas within production software (web apps, client apps, server apps) you have written in F# in the past year or so that you would previously have written in C#.

  I want to implement the command line features like in a linux terminal. I saw this in ftp command also. If I press tab I need to list the commands. If I press control characters I need to get that characters based on that I will do some action. And if I give any commands it should execute. For this I tried with Term::ReadKey that is in non-canonical mode. But here I am facing more problems like if I press any control character or arrow I got three characters. For the up arrow I got ASCII 27 91 65. Can anyone help me out of this problem?

  Hi, I tried to read CPUID using assembler in C++. I know there is function for it in , but I want the asm way. So, after CPUID is executed, it should fill eax,ebx,ecx registers with ASCII coded string. But my problem is, since I can in asm adress only full, or half eax register, how to break that 32 bits into 4 bytes.   I receive encoded PDF files regularly. The encoding works like this: the PDFs can be displayed correctly in Acrobat Reader select all and copy the test via Acrobat Reader and paste in a text editor will show that the content are encoded so, examples are: 13579 -> 3579; hello -> jgnnq it's basically an offset (maybe swap) of ASCII characters. The question is how can I find the offset automatically when I have access to only a few samples. I cannot be sure whether the encoding offset is changed. All I know is some text will usually (if not always) show up, e.g. "Name:", "Summary:", "Total:", inside the PDF. Thank you!

  Since there are so many valid characters for email addresses, are there any valid email addresses that can in themselves be XSS attacks or SQL injections? I couldn't find any information on this on the web. The local-part of the e-mail address may use any of these ASCII characters: Uppercase and lowercase English letters (a–z, A–Z) Digits 0 to 9 Characters ! # $ % & ' * + - / = ? ^ _ ` { | } ~ Character . (dot, period, full stop) provided that it is not the last character, and provided also that it does not appear two or more times consecutively (e.g. [email protected]). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-mail_address#RFC_specification I'm not asking how to prevent these attacks (I'm already using parametrized queries and HTML purifier), this is more a proof-of-concept. The first thing that came to mind was 'OR [email protected], except that spaces are not allowed. Do all SQL injections require spaces?

• Using SHIFT_JIS text in PHP

  I am building a form that needs to accept characters encoded in SHIFT_JIS and then send those results via email to a recipient. I've tried to simply capture the results from the $_POST variable and then to insert them into a block of text like this: $contents = <<<TEST Name: $NameJp ... TEST but that doesn't appear to work (which doesn't really surprise me). This is my first attempt at dealing with non-ASCII characters in PHP and I am hoping that people might have some suggestions. Perhaps I am missing a simple function to encode the text. Also, are there any other potential pitfalls that I might encounter? Thanks.

UPDATE: I need this check working on the MySQL as I need to run it on the server to correct broken tables. I can't pass the data through a script as the database is around 1TB.

How can I take a Response Stream and force the default browser Save dialog to appear from the Silverlight Application without using the Html.Window.Navigate(New Uri("image url"))?

By default, the encoding is set to ascii. I'd be very grateful for a pointer to whatever I need to do to let the build system know that my files are utf8.   I have a sharepoint 2010 web application with 2 different zones, default zone with windows login (for search crawl), internet with Claims (FBA) for users to login. I have custom webparts that uses using (SPSite mySite = new SPSite(SPContext.Current.Site.ID)) using (SPWeb web = mySite.RootWeb) { string url = web.Url I use this url to include to emails etc... Problem is: when user connects to FBA (extended zone), and goes to the webpart,string url in my code returns the url of the default zone(windows auth) where user should not be touching. I have different host headers for these zones, any help would be very appreciated. Update: fixed it with using (SPSite newsite =new SPSite(SPContext.Current.Site.ID,SPContext.Current.Site.Zone)) using (SPWeb web = newsite.RootWeb) { //do your implementation here }

• What does the 'X' in .aspx, docx, xlsx, etc... represent?

  It's one of those things you just take for granted until one day someone asks you and you realize you can't answer it. Much like for years I never questioned the use of 1033 directories in Microsoft products for years until one day, someone asked me about it. Around the release of .NET and Office 2007, Microsoft added an x to basically all of their extensions and I frankly took it as representing XML, but that simply doesn't make sense with .aspx. So, I realize this is a very non technical question, but now that the question has been asked of me and my googling hasn't given me an answer, can anyone tell me with authority what the X represents? Is it extended? Xml? Or is there no meaning behind it?

• Trouble getting email attachment from Exchange

  I am getting the error message “The remote server returned an error: (501) Not Implemented.” when I try to use the HttpWebRequest.GetResponse() using the GET Method to get an email attachment from exchange.   I have a code snippet like this class A(object): class b: def print_hello(self): print "Hello world" b = property(b) And I want to override the inner class b (please dont worry about the lowercase name) behaviour. Say, I want to add a new method or I want to change an existing method, like: class C(A): class b(A.b): def print_hello(self): print "Inner Class: Hello world" b = property(b) Now if I create C's object as c = C(), and call c.b I get TypeError: 'property' object is not callable error. How would I get pass this and call print_hello of the extended inner class? Disclaimer: I dont want to change the code for A class.
