• Java in Flux: Utopia or Deuteranopia?

  What a difference a year makes, indeed. Steve Harris, Senior VP, App Server Dev, Oracle and Adam Messinger, VP, Fusion Middleware Group, Oracle presented an informative keynote at the TheServerSide Java Symposium today. With a title "Java in Flux: Utopia or Deuteranopia?" you know things are going to be interesting (see Aeon Flux if you don't get the title reference).What a YearThey started with a little background, explaining that the reactions to Oracle's acquisition of Sun (and therefore Java) one year ago varied greatly, from "Freak Out!" to "Don't Panic." From the Oracle perspective, being the steward of and key contributor to Java requires a lot of sausage making.  They admitted to Oracle's fair share of Homer Simpson-esque "D'oh" moments in the past year, which was complicated by Oracle's communication style.   "Oracle has a tradition has a saying a few things and sticking by then, in contrast to Sun who was much more open," Adam explained. "We laid out the Java roadmap and are executing on it, and we hope that speaks to our commitment."Java SEAdam talked about having a long term perspective on the Java language (20+ years), letting ideas mature in more experimental languages, then bringing them into Java. Current priorities include: JVM convergence (getting the best features of JRockit into Hotspot); support of parallel/multi-core programming, and of course, all the improvements in JDK7. The JDK7 Developer Preview is underway (please download now and report bugs!). The Oracle development team is also working on Lambda and modularity (Jigsaw) for SE 8. Less certain, but also under discussion are improvements for Java SE 9. Adam is thinking of it as a "back to basics" release. He mentioned reworking JNI, improving data integration and improved device support.Java EE To provide context about Java EE, Steve said Java EE was great at getting businesses on the internet. The success of Java EE resulted in an incredible expansion of the middleware marketplace for developers and vendors.  But with success, came more. Java EE kept piling on capabilities, but that created excess baggage.  Doing simple things was no longer so simple. That's where Java community is so valuable: "When Java EE was too complex and heavyweight, many people were happy to tell us what we were doing wrong and popularize solutions," Steve explained. Because of that feedback, the Java EE teams focused on making things simple again: POJOs and annotations, and leveraging changes in Java SE.  Steve said that "innovation doesn't happen in expert groups, it happens on the ground where developers are solving problems," and platform stewards need to pay attention and take advantage of changes that are taking place.Enter the Cloud "Developers are restless, they want cloud functionality from their own IT dept" Steve explained. With the cloud, the scope of problem has expanded to include the data center itself, with multiple tenants. To move forward, existing APIs in Java EE need to be updated to be tenant-aware, service-enabled, and EE needs to support various styles of deployment. The goal is to get all that done in Java EE 8.Adam questioned Steve about timing and schedule. "Yes, the schedule is aggressive, but it'll work" Steve said. Then Adam asked about modularization. If Java SE 8 comes out at the end of 2012, when can Java EE deliver modularization? Steve suggested that key stakeholders can come with up some pre-SE 8 agreement on how to expose the metadata about modules. He then alluded to Mark Reinhold and John Duimovich's keynote at EclipseCON next week. • How can Swift be so much faster than Objective-C?

  Apple launched its new programming language Swift today. In the presentation, they made some performance comparisons between Objective-C and Python. The following is a picture of one of their slides, of a comparison of those three languages performing some complex object sort: There was an even more incredible graph about a performance comparison working on some encryption algorithm. Obviously this is a marketing talk, and they didn't go into detail on how this was implemented in each. I leaves me wondering though: how can a new programming language be so much faster? In this example, surely you just have a bad Objective-C compiler or you're doing something in a less efficient way? How else would you explain a 40% performance increase? I understand that garbage collection/automated reference control might produce some additional overhead, but this much?

• Workflow: Deploy Oracle Solaris 11 Zones

  One of the new workflows that we've introduced, which is a pretty good example of what workflows can do for you, is the Deploy Oracle Solaris 11 Zones workflow. This workflow was designed to show you everything you need to do in order to create and manage an environment with zones. It tells you what roles are needed, and it shows you the process using this image: The left side shows you the prerequisites for deploying Oracle Solaris 11 Zones - you need to have Ops Center configured on Oracle Solaris 11, have your libraries set up, and have your hardware ready to go. Once you've done that, you can begin the workflow. If you haven't provisioned Oracle Solaris 11, you do so, then create one or more zones, and create a server pool for those zones. Each one of these steps has an existing How-To, which walks you through the process in detail, and the final step of the workflow directs you to the next workflow that you're likely to be interested in - in this case, the Operating Zones workflow.

• Good online auction software

  We are looking for some PHP-based auction software to start off with and I have have been scouring the net many times and am almost ready to purchase phpprobid as this seems to be the best and most feature rich of the lot; only bad things I have read is the lack of after-sales customer service. Others I have also looked at include: AJ Auction Software WeBid GuruScript Auction PHP Auction (enuuk). Many of them turn me off by having unprofessional sites which makes me think their software will be the same and be rubbish. Many also don't go into detail with the feature set like PHP Pro Bid does. So before we purchase PHP Pro Bid I was wondering if I missed something good? Thanks!

• My Tech Ed North America Preview - Certification Edition

  In my previous TechEd North America Preview, I addressed all the content I wanted to see at the show. This time, we shall turn our attention to the certifications I might try to pick up. If you have never been to TechEd North America before, one of the greatest things about the event is an on-site certification center. If you have a couple hours to spare, you can walk up to a test. The first test on my agenda is 70-5231. I took this update test once, but did not do well on the MVC portion2. A few practice tests later, and I think I'm ready to fake that section. After that, I need to complete my road to being a master. The good folks here at work have been having a real love / hate relationship with the idea of me become an MCM in SQL Server3. Of course, before I do that, I need to finally take the SQL Administration tests. Thus, we shall add 70-4324 and 70-4505 to the list. Speaking of MCM, TechEd North America will have a special on test 88-9706. This test is normally $500, and you have to find a place to take it7. However, there is a special 50% off rate for people who take it on location. With those kind of prices, I may just take it as a form of study guide. As a final push, I may take some Windows Phone exams. I mentioned in my previous post that I may attend the 70-5998 Exam Cram session. Unfortunately, I will be staffing the Hands-On-Lab at that time. As we know, this has never stopped me from taking a test. This may lead to fits of 70-5069, but after we've come this far... That should complete my list. Do I really think I'll find time to take 6 tests at TechEd North America? Probably not. I have done it at TechEd North America before, but that was before I was TechEd North America staff. I also had a co-worker pass 9 in one year, but he basically did nothing but travel to Orlando in 2007 to take tests. And what's the point of attending a HUGE conference if you don't network? Check that you are connected to the network, and that your network is functioning correctly. DETAIL – Unspecified error Solution: Option 1 – Log on locally with the service account once to create a local profile for it. Option 2 - Modify the application pool by going into IIS > Application Pools > Right-Click offending app pool > Advanced Settings > Set “Load User Profile” to False. Give it try!! Good luck!!

• Is there a rule of thumb for what a bing map's zoom setting should be based on how many miles you want to display?

  If a map contains pushpins/waypoints that span only a couple of miles, the map should be zoomed way in and show a lot of detail. If the pushpins/waypoints instead cover vast areas, such as hundreds or even thousands of miles, it should be zoomed way out. That's clear. My question is: is there a general guideline for mapping (no pun intended) Bing Maps zoom levels to a particular number of miles that separate the furthest apart points? e.g., is there some chart that has something like: Zoom level N shows 2 square miles Zoom level N shows 5 square miles etc.?

• Avatar (spoiler alert!)

  This past weekend we finally saw “Avatar,” or as I like to call it “Dances with Smurfs.”  It was rather light on the story, heavy on the message, and incredibly well done.  The eye for detail is what blew me away, especially the visual distortion (presumably due to density) when the two atmospheres mixed.  The only thing I thought they might have missed was why so many (presumably) mammals had 6 appendages (4 arms + 2 legs) and breathed through passages near their clavicles, but the Na’vi (sp?) didn’t have/do either.  Also, James Cameron just loves to telegraph upcoming events: Riding the big red bird thing has only happened 5 times before – Sully is on the job.  The tree is going to download dying Ripley to her avatar body – Sully is going to do that too.  I’ve seen worse foreshadowing, but not in a long time. I give it 4 Papa Smurfs out of 5.

Preferred features: Cross Platform Wrriten in Java/Scala (JOGL or LWJGL), C# (preferred OpenTK), Python or JavaScript/WebGL. Support for OpenGL is a must. Direct3D is optional. • grub does not display activity during boot

  Prior to Ubuntu 11.04 I could configure grub so that after the menu is displayed and the system is booting detail of the boot activity appears. Now there's just a blank screen between the menu and gdm login. How do I coax Ubuntu 11.04 to display the boot activity? Dale E. • How can I switch memory modules to 1600 Mhz?

  Some months ago I bought 4 Memory modules of 4GB DDR3 1600 KINGSTON HYPERX. The official Kingston manual says: *This module has been tested to run at DDR3-1600 at a low latency timing of 9-9-9-27 at 1.65V.The SPD is programmed to JEDEC standard latency DDR3-1333 timing of 9-9-9. I cannot find which is the real speed of my memory modules. • Problem in Addon Domain name binding with existing directory in my webspace

  I recently purchased a domain thinkzarahatke.com. At the time of purchasing i selected an option, say url redirect, to my existing site. Further I had entered Naming server detail. But I dint find any other option to change URL rewrite parameters under Domain Name Manager. From the cPanel of my hosting space, I had added new domain as addon and set a sundirectory for it. Now If I am trying to access my new domain directly, it is automatically redirecting to my old website. While if i access some inside directory, like thinkzarahatke.com/blog, then i am able to access to my new site. What wrong i done? Please tell me if i need to do some more settings with addon domain.

• UML Class Diagram: Abstract or Interface?

  I am modeling a class diagram and have spotted an opportunity to simplify it slightly. What I want to know is, would this it be better to implement an abstract class or an interface? The scenario is this, I have the classes: Artist Genre Album Song All of which share the methods getName, setName, and getCount (playcount that is). Would it be best to create an abstract 'Music' class with the aforementioned abstract methods, or should I create an interface, since the classes that implement the interface have to include all of the interface's methods (I think, correct me if I'm wrong). The key setup is to avoid the replication data  looping. Oracle GoldenGate for MySQL uses the information in the replication checkpoint table to identify the transaction applied by replicats and thus avoid extracting those transactions by Oracle GoldenGate extracts. The example setup in the extract in MySQL 5.5 instance is shown as follows.  TRANLOGOPTIONS ALTLOGDEST "/home/oracle/software/mysql_5.5.38/data/binlog/bin-log.index" FILTERTABLE test.checkpoint_tbl Setting up an active-active replication is often more complicated than this and requires the following additional considerations. • Is functional programming a superset of object oriented?

  The more functional programming I do, the more I feel like it adds an extra layer of abstraction that seems like how an onion's layer is- all encompassing of the previous layers. I don't know if this is true so going off the OOP principles I've worked with for years, can anyone explain how functional does or doesn't accurately depict any of them: Encapsulation, Abstraction, Inheritance, Polymorphism I think we can all say, yes it has encapsulation via tuples, or do tuples count technically as fact of "functional programming" or are they just a utility of the language? I know Haskell can meet the "interfaces" requirement, but again not certain if it's method is a fact of functional? I'm guessing that the fact that functors have a mathematical basis you could say those are a definite built in expectation of functional, perhaps? Please, detail how you think functional does or does not fulfill the 4 principles of OOP.

• Does having multiple URIs mapping to the same resource help SEO?

  Let's say I have a site with products that have tags, if each resource is available at GET '/products/tagged/:tag_list/:product_permalink' Could that be better for SEO than just one permalink? For example a product tagged "tea" and "coffee" would be available at GET '/products/tagged/tea/:product_permalink' GET '/products/tagged/coffee/:product_permalink' GET '/products/tagged/tea/coffee/:product_permalink' GET '/products/tagged/coffee/tea/:product_permalink' I would imagine that google would appreciate this because it gives multiple URIs with different levels of detail about the product, but I cant really be certain. Anyone have any direct knowledge on the topic? --EDIT-- As John Conde points, this is a horrible idea. What about having the links on my site link to a route such as GET '/products/tagged/:full_tag_list/:product_permalink', and then any time a user changes tags just have a HTTP moved permanently status to the new URL. Therefore duplicate URLs would be highly unlikely and mitigated by the proper response. Would this be better?
