• How do I stop Python install on Mac OS X from putting things in my home directory?

  Hi, I'm trying to install Python from source on my Mac. (OS X 10.6.2, Python-2.6.5.tar.bz2) I've done this before and it was easy, but for some reason, this time after ./configure, and make, the sudo make install puts things some things in my home directory instead of in /usr/local/... where I expect. The .py files are okay, but not the .so files... • Fix: Azure Disabled over 49 cents? Beware of using a Java Virtual Machine on Microsoft Azure

  I love my MSDN Azure account. I can spin up a demo/dev app or VM in seconds. In fact, it is so easy to create a virtual machine that Azure shut down my whole account! Last night I spun up a Java Virtual Machine to play with some Android stuff. My mistake was that I didn’t read the Virtual Machine pricing warning: “I have a MSDN Azure Benefit subscription. Can I use my monthly Azure credits to purchase Oracle software?” “No, Azure credits in our MSDN offers are not applicable to Oracle software. In order to purchase Oracle software in the MSDN Azure Benefit subscription, customers need to turn off their {0} spending limit and pay at the regular pay-as-you-go rate. Otherwise, Oracle usage will hit the {1} spending limit and the subscription will be immediately disabled.”  Immediately disabled? Yup. Everything connected to the subscription was shut off, deallocated, rendered useless - even the free Web sites and the free Sendgrid email service.  The fix? I had to remove the spending limit from my account so I could pay $0.49 (49 cents) for the JVM usage. I still had $134.10 in credits remaining for regular usage with 6 days left in the billing month.  Now the restoration/clean-up begins… figuring out how to get the web sites and services back online.  To me, the preferable way would be for Azure to warn me when setting up a JVM that I had no way of paying for the service. In the alternative, shut down just the offending services – the ones that can’t be covered by the regular credits. What a mess.

• eclipse plugin not loading dll due to long path

  I am building an eclipse plugin (a notes plugin, but its a eclipse plugin in the end). One of the plugins my plugin depends on needs to load a native dll. The problem is, that fails depending on where in the disk such dll is. If it is longer than a certain threshold I get the error below java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: nlsxbe (The filename or extension is too long. ) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibraryWithPath(ClassLoader.java:952) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibraryWithClassLoader(ClassLoader.java:921) at java.lang.System.loadLibrary(System.java:452) at lotus.domino.NotesThread.load(Unknown Source) at lotus.domino.NotesThread.checkLoaded(Unknown Source) at lotus.domino.NotesThread.sinitThread(Unknown Source) at com.atempo.adam.lotus.plugin.views.TopicView.createPartControl(TopicView.java:609) I have added the path to Path env var, and also registered the dll to no avail. My env is Ms vista profesional, java1.5, eclipse3.4 (and lotus 8) Anyone out there have a clue? Many thanks in advance.

• Looped jQuery slideshow with smooth cross-fades

  I'm trying to do a simple rotating image on the home page. Under the hood I'm reading a directory and then populating urls for the images into an array. What I want to do is cross-fade the images. If it was just a matter of showing the next one, it's easy, but since I need to cross-fade, it's a bit harder. I think what I want to do is do the fades by calling animate() on the opacity value of the <img> tag, and in between swapping out the css background-image property of the enclosing <div>. But the results are not that great. I've used tools for more full featured slideshows, but I don't want the overhead of adding a plugin if I can avoid it, and a simple crossfade seems like it should be easier. • BroadcastReceiver not reading stored value from SharedPreferences

  In my app I have a broadcast receiver that turns on GPS upon receiving a set string of text. In the onLocationChanged method, I want to pass the GPS data and a value from my shared preferences to a thread in a string. I have the thread writing to log and can see all the GPS values in the string but the last value from my shared preferences is just showing up as 'prefPhoneNum' which I initialised the string to at the beginning of the receiver class. • exception message getting lost in IIOP between glassfish domains

  I'm running two glassfish v2 domains containing stateless session EJBs. In a few cases, an EJB in one domain has to call one in the other. My problem is that when the called EJB aborts with an exception, the caller does not receive the message of the exception and instead reports an internal error that is not helpful at all in diagnosing the problem. What happens seems to be this: At the transport layer, a org.omg.CORBA.portable.ApplicationException is created,which already loses all detail information about the exception except its class. • Install proprietary drivers 14.04 NVIDIA (steam segmentation issue)

  Recently, I finally got the official drivers for my NVIDIA 560 Ti card installed on Ubuntu 14.04 (hooray) However I started looking into installing Steam and I'm getting segmentation errors when I try to run the software. I tried installing 32-bit libs and it seemed like they weren't available or they were already installed. Upon further investigation, I found that a solution is to install the proprietary drivers, install steam then switch back to the other drivers. I'm not really sure what "proprietary drivers" are in all honesty. Has anyone gone through this process that could provide some insight here? (I installed the official 64-bit driver from the NVIDIA site for my 560 Ti just for reference. And the Ubuntu version installed is 64-bit as well) Update: This is the error text I get when trying to run steam after installing it via the ubuntu store. • It's raining development VirtualBox images again!

• Django and Google App Engine Helper not finding the ipaddr module.

  I'm trying to get Django running on GAE using this tutorial. When I run python manage.py runserver I get the stacktrace below.
